IMAP server with fast search
I run my own email server which support 5 accounts, but a few of the accounts have a lot of messages (4000 in the a single sub-folder is not uncommon), in addition to this I often need to run search for words in the body of the message. Such searches are extremely slow. I have setup with Maildir, and I used to run courier, but switched to dovecot http://packages.debian.org/testing/mail/dovecot-imapd (I don't really like courier folders system), as expected this had no effect on searching. Any recommendation of server with good searching? I've been thinking about a few: Cyrus: Also uses message per file storage, have some indexes, but I don't think these indexes are used for searching UW-IMAP: Having all messages in one file with improve search, but opening and manipulating such big file will slow down server. dbmail: sounds like a good idea, but I am not sure how stable is the server. I also not sure if performance of using mysql 'like' for searching of message body is really big improvement. There is a nice packages for searching archives (e.g. lurker), which are extremely fast, so it would be reasonable to incorporate this search capability in to mail server, right? I am looking for package with capabilities similar to yahoogroups (i.e. mail list AND bulletin board). Most of the packages I've seen are either maillists or bulletin board. I believe this defaults to 5. I decreased this to 2 and the server disconnects went away. This problem is much easier fixed by setting MAXPERIP=SOME LARGE NUMBER on the server. I would appreciate some insight on this. I run exim/procmail/courier combination but I am not using smtp for outmail. With courier I use courier-imap-ssl and I have mozilla connection to 6 accounts at the same time, so my MAXPERIP=40. Yesterday, I started to have server disconnect errors, but restarting courier (courier-authdaemon , courier-imap, courier-imap-ssl, courier-pop and courier-pop-ssl) fixed the problem. Later I noticed unusual activity on exim, and after some pocking around, I found that exim relay was fully open, and some one was sending spam. Restarting exim4 fixed open relay problem. It's better to run this command from /usr: ln -s X11R6 X11 It is a misnomer in the configuration of the GCC, ld I think. RESPONSIBILITY OFF just my 2 cents. You meant startx, not xstart. Since /etc/X11/Xmodmap is called from /etc/X11/Xsession, it also would not be invoked from xinit. Same here. Just put the line xmodmap /etc/X11/Xmodmap in your .xsession, that's all you can do :) I prefer using xinit over xdm since I use several different windows managers. So what? Do you want to execute X without any window manager? Just make your .xsession look like this: xmodmap ~/.anything xterm -geometry +0+0 That's all! Vad. ++_ Vadik V.
