IMAP server with fast search

2004-09-10 Thread Vadik
I run my own email server which support 5 accounts, but a few of the
accounts have a lot of messages (4000 in the a single sub-folder is not
uncommon), in addition to this I often need to run search for words in
the body of the message. Such searches are extremely slow. I have
setup with Maildir, and I used to run courier, but switched to dovecot
http://packages.debian.org/testing/mail/dovecot-imapd (I don't really
like courier folders system), as expected this had no effect on searching.

Any recommendation of server with good searching?
I've been thinking about a few:
Cyrus:
Also uses message per file storage, have some indexes, but I don't think
these indexes are used for searching

UW-IMAP:
Having all messages in one file with improve search, but opening and
manipulating such big file will slow down server.

dbmail:
sounds like a good idea, but I am not sure how stable is the server. I
also not sure if performance of using mysql 'like' for searching of
message body is really big improvement.

There is a nice packages for searching archives (e.g. lurker), which are
extremely fast, so it would be reasonable to incorporate this search
capability in to mail server, right?

Thanks for any recommendation/comments.

I can only agree with this part -- I have a few users with insanely

I've been meaning to convert that box over to maildir to see if the
performance goes up or down...
I can tell you that it is fast for me to access these folders, and to
move mail around these folders. But I never used mbox to start with, so
I can not compare.

Well, if you are willing to read the docs and setup something that is
somewhat more complicated, you can use Cyrus.

Well, I did read documentation but I've missed any references to squat.
The only reference I was able to find (now) is
/usr/share/doc/cyrus21-doc/html/man/squatter.8.html and still be nothing
on cyrus website.

Anyway, this sounds really interesting. i was thinking about cyrus for

looking for: mail list AND bulletin board in one

2004-09-07 Thread Vadik
I am looking for package with capabilities similar to yahoogroups (i.e.
mail list AND bulletin board). Most of the packages I've seen are
either maillists or bulletin board. If this would be a part of larger
content management system (or can be integrated in to one) it would be
additional benefit.

Any recommendations?
Thanks.
PS: sorry, it is lightly OT.

I have had issues with mozilla/thunderbird vs. courier-imap in the past.
Check 'account settings' | 'server settings' |'advanced' | 'maximum
number of server connections to cache'.
I believe this defaults to 5. I decreased this to 2 and the server
disconnects went away.

This problem is much easier fixed by setting MAXPERIP=SOME LARGE
NUMBER on the server. By default courier allows 4 connection from the
same IP, mozilla wants to make 5 (performance), so you need to tell
courier to allow larger number of connections.

You may be right, I have a fully-stateful-packet inspection Firewall

I think I tracked down the problem. Our company uses Cisco firewall,
and reading some Cisco documentation, they have MAP (and other protocol)
timeout, which means that firewall will disconnect the connection if it
is idling some period of time (5 min default). So I set check for new
mail to be every 3 minutes. Seems to work for now. Now I want to
investigate if mozilla has other ways to keep connection alive.

No. After stopping the server it shouldn't still be running.
at once. If there is some problem (eg network blocked by ISP) then
the delivery processes could run for a considerable amount of time
before terminating.

Thank you,
This explains the behavior. For some reason Exim4 open relaying, and

restarting courier opens exim4 relay

2004-07-07 Thread vadik
I would appreciate some insight on this.
I run exim/procmail/courier combination but I am not using smtp for
outmail. With courier I use courier-imap-ssl and I have mozilla
connection to 6 accounts at the same time, so my MAXPERIP=40.
Yesterday, I started to have server disconnect errors, but restarting
courier (courier-authdaemon , courier-imap, courier-imap-ssl,
courier-pop and courier-pop-ssl) fixed the problem. Later I noticed
unusual activity on exim, and after some pocking around, I found that
exim relay was fully open, and some one was sending spam. Restarting
exim4 fixed open relay problem.

Today happened exactly the same (this time I checked for open relay).
I don't really know where to begin looking in to this.

This looks to be a very simple exercise in scripting, if nothing else.
Have you taken a look at kbackup (I assume not):

kbackup doesn't do ftp. I know that this can be done with scripting,

It doesn't seem that anything is wrong. As part of the post-installation
script, webmin looks to see if you already have a miniserv ssl certificate
and creates it if you don't.
If you want to be absolutely sure the package is properly installed, do
dpkg -l webmin

With JDK 1.2 they used to have two separate JDK packages for UNIX. Sun
decided to drop one of them. JRE is supported, and is part of Netscape 6 as
of today. JRE is just a part of JDK, and can be downloaded from:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/

PS: JDK included everything in JRE.
PS2: Installation does not creates links to /usr/local/bin, so you need to
create links manually (I created link /usr/local/jdk to /usr/local/jdk-1.3,
and then all link to /usr/local/jdk/bin/).

The article I read said that they didn't want to support a separate
package anymore, and were telling people to just grab the JDK. *shrug*

It's best to boot from floppies (to avoid endless loop of the following
command), mount your old disk under, say, /mnt, and your new disk under,
say, /mnttt. Well then just run the following command:
cp -dpR /mnt /mnttt
If you want to see which files are copied, add the switch -v. It will
take a little long time :)

Then, Don't Forget To Re-install Lilo! (maybe after you remove your old
disk, and boot from floppy giving the kernel root=somtehing parameter,
and then you maybe have to rdev /vmlinuz /dev/hda1 or something).

xautolock to either run xlock as a screen saver or maybe even apm -S
 to suspend the machine.

How would I do this? can I put it in one of XDM's configuration scripts?

The config file you need to change is /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 (for the
console). Just put the line xautolock params into this file.

I also had this sort of trouble a long time ago. Which compiler version

It's better to run this command from /usr:

It is a misnomer in the configuration of the GCC, ld I think.

You meant startx, not xstart.

Since /etc/X11/Xmodmap is called from /etc/X11/Xsession, it also would
 not be
 invoked from xinit.

Same here. Just put the line xmodmap /etc/X11/Xmodmap in your
.xsession, that's all you can do :)

I prefer using xinit over xdm since I use several different windows
 managers.

So what? Do you want to execute X without any window manager? Just make
your .xsession look like this:

xmodmap ~/.anything
xterm -geometry +0+0

That's all!

Oh I forgot... it must be called from xdm or xinit. All the output of

I'm sending you my /etc/X11/Xsession, install it with permissions 755,
owned by root.root, of course. This is the standard debian Xsession
(maybe it's corrupted on your system). Run xmodmap /etc/X11/Xmodmap or
