http://buildd.debian.org/

Eventually, you are going to have to bite the bullet and write a
Makefile. That's what I would suggest you do to solve this problem.
An example would be:

ldflags = -lX11 -lm
lddirs = -L/usr/X11R6/lib

xroy: xroy.c#and whatever else it depends on.
gcc $(lddirs) $(ldflags) -o xroy xroy.c

clean:
rm -f xroy

.PHONY: clean

I'm trying to keep this very simple for sake of example, so you should
be able to see what's going on. The first two lines are assignments.
The fourth and fifth are the most important. They tell make, If xroy.c
has been updated more recently than xroy, run the command on the fifth
line. Notice the tabs in front of the commands. They are obligatory.
The last few lines tell make, If someone types 'make clean', then
(always) rm -f xroy. Also, clean is not an actual file.

I know make might seem overkill right now, but if you wait to learn how
to use it until you have a project with hundreds of C files and no
makefiles, you are going to regret it.

Cheers,
Chris

You should have put instead of plain -lX11:
-L/usr/X11R6/lib -lX11

Agreed.

A little earlier in the thread (article's already gone) if was mentioned
you could add the -L/... flag to CFLAGS in a Makefile. I'd like to
amend that: if the Makefile keeps LDFLAGS separately, as some do, it
belongs there instead, as a flag specifically to the linker. Messed
this up just today :-)

you might try adding an -L/usr/X11R6/lib to the CFLAGS line of the
Makeflag (or unlesss you don't use one on the gcc line.
I also had this sort of trouble a long time ago. Which compiler version
  and binutils are you using?

It's better to run this command from /usr:
 ln -s X11R6 X11

Don't do this!!! I tried this fix for netscape and it causes problems
with 'man'. It search X11, X11R6 and X386 directories for man pages so
if you create a link like this, it will find all of you X manpages twice.

The better solution is to add the -L flag to the compile line.

It is a misnomer in the configuration of the GCC, ld I think.
