Debian 2.0 unstable
Wow... this thing really is unstable. I got about 6 or so packages that said that dependency errors were floating around... sigh. Well, no big deal, right? I did what you guys said, got it installed via ftp some packages failed, no big deal. I rebooted... now Accelerated X 4.1 is dead. Gave me some odd segmentation fault errors.. Ok... no big deal, reinstall it... now it can figure out some symbols and dependencies. Someone once told me to install debian 1.3.1R6 RAW... then immediately run the script to avoid problems like this. Anyone know what is causing these things to kill my Accelerated X? Fails to startup... says.. cannot solved unresolved symbols X_global_lock XUnlockMutex_fn XlockMutex_fn I am seriously considering nuking the partition and starting over. What does `ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/X...' say? (X... is whatever Accelerated X call their server.) You might have to install some packages from oldlibs/* for non-Debian programs to work, even if there are no dependencies on them. If you don't upgrade everything, you'll have some problems with dependencies on (IIRC) elf-x11r6lib, which don't matter. But you should *never* use the --force-... options to dpkg. The best solution would be to get the hamm versions of the packages when you have problems. It would also be useful if you could write down the problems you have and report them so we can get it working better when it's finally released. -- Carey Evans http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/c.evans/ GNU GPL: The Source will be with you... always. -- E-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST. Re: Debian 2.0 unstable
I didn't see any mention of downloading the latest hamm version of libc5 _BEFORE_ you run the script. All that was mentioned was doing a clean install of 1.3.1 and then running the script. I haven't done this yet but have been reading up on it and following the discussion on the devel list.could this be the problem? It is a known bug with the current version of the script that just hasn't been fixed yet. The script is supposed to download libc5 from hamm, but it was left out by mistake. -- E-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST. Trouble? Re: Debian 2.0 unstable
On Sat, 7 Mar 1998, Carroll Kong wrote: Fails to startup... says.. cannot solved unresolved symbols X_global_lock XUnlockMutex_fn XlockMutex_fn It looks like your X server is trying to use a new library, when it expects an old one. There are a couple possible causes: 1. You have not installed one of the compatibility libraries from oldlibs. These libraries are there so your old binaries can continue to function while you slowly migrate your system to libc6 stuff. Your previous report of dependency problems on installation seems to point this way. 2. The X server doesn't know where to find or can't use your compat library for some reason. I don't know how possible this is really. I am seriously considering nuking the partition and starting over. Or... should I ... gasp consider Red Hat instead? Nuking the partition is almost never worth it, if you have used ( == probably customized) your system much. Of course you can always consider Red Hat :) Pardon me when I say that your way of asking for help in your last message and this one is somewhat provocative.
