Prior to the following tests i tried both icewm and blackbox. The
problem, (no Print Selection option available) remains.

I have just completed a test of the following:

Stable running iceweasel 3.5.16 Print Selection available YES
Testing (upgraded from squeeze 6.0.3) iceweasel 8.0-3b1 NO
Testing-2 9 (from Debian testing Cut) iceweasel 8.0-3b1 NO
Sid ( from upgraded debian-6.0.3/wheezt/sid) iceweasel 9.0.1-1 NO
Wheezy/Sid (from upgraded debian-6.0.3/) iceweasel 9.0.1-1 NO

Mozilla firefox iceweasel 9.0.1-1 NO
Mozilla Aurora iceweasel 9.0.1 NO

How about Mozilla Firefox 10.0 on stable?

tested Stable
Firefox Nightly Build 12.0a1 (2012-01-30)

File/Print/General has a grayed out selection box, if nothing has been
selected. Select something and File/Print/General/selection CAN be
selected. Remember I can not print on stable (mentioned previously

I then tried the above on Wheezy and, after getting the usb adapter
recognized by the system, the same above results as above with a printed
page.

Then tried with iceweasel 9.0-1 with the same result! Yea.

The problem was here. The USB to parallel adapter intermittently
being NOT recognized, and the NUT between the chair and the keyboard
not seeing that the selection had been moved as well as that same NUT
not selecting text BEFORE he tried to enable the selection box.

Problem mainly solved. The intermittent USB problem remains.

Thanks, once again Camaleón, for asking the right questions so that the
NUT would finally troubleshoot the problem correctly.

Very Best Regardas

Wayne, the NUT

Note: I could not test printing on Stable due to the cup fixes for a
USB to Parallel adapter are in Wheezy and Sid. I did not check
backports for the required files.

It seems that the problem is upstream Mozilla code, not Debian.

I would run the upstream Firefox in your "stable" box and see how it
goes. If the "print selection" is not available, then Firefox's to blame.
If it works, we're back to the system packages.

Hope this get fixed sooner or later but I am not holding my breath as,
according to a Google search, this problem has been reported since 2008.

Hum... wait. I have launched my wheezy testing system (iceweasel) and the
option *is not* there and I have a fully gnome install. Curiously enough,
in lenny and upstream Firefox 10.0 it is present... this is getting weird.

Oh my... wait, wait, wait... the option *has been moved* to the "General"
tab :-)

Yup, just to discard/confirm something wrong at Firefox's side.

Ah, but the option is there, right? By just one moment I thought I have
also lost the "text selection" option... I wonder the reason for this
change, in Firefox 10 it is located as always has been.

Anyway, you have to select some text for that option to become
"selectable".

You can download Firefox from upstream and check from there. If the
missing option ("print selected") is present here, then try using a new

The Print Selection is also missing in the nightly build of FireFox and

Woops, just checked and I had two gome packages installed. Removing
them and restarting iceweasel didn't help. ;-(

I believe that I saw the same problem on stable, 2 different testing
installs, and on sid. I will check them know and report back.

Till then, Best Regards

If it was there but is not longer an option it can be a bug, sure.

I told you so because Opera, for instance, provides different printing
options for KDE and GNOME though the reason is unknown to me. So I
thought Firefox could be a similar case...
