And of course, i ask me what is better : to go on with 2.6-486, to try again with 2.6-686 after increasing memory, or (really last) to return to 2.4. The bug report mentions problems with loading the initial ram disk with RAM equal to or less than 48MB so I very much doubt that that is your problem. If I remember correctly, the k6 doesn't support all 686 instructions so you need to use a kernel compiled for the 586 or lower. -- David Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: kernel 2.6.x and 3c574_cs driver
I've found and 'fixed' the problem with the configuration for this PCMCIA driver. It seems that even though the config value from the original configuration had CONFIG_NET_PCMCIA=y, when I ran 'make xconfig' it changed this to a commented out line '# CONFIG_NET_PCMCIA is not set' and so the list of possible PCMCIA drivers was not listed. I uncommented this and set it as in the original file, re-ran the 'make xconfig' and got the list for PCMCIA network drivers. I will try to determine if this is a known problem or not. Any feedback on this part of the issue would, again, be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Bob Bob McGowan wrote: The bottom line problem is that I'm not able to build a kernel with the driver for this card. Basically, I can't find it listed in the configuration tool (make xconfig). The following is a bit of the history and background information. I have an old Sony VAIO laptop with a 3Com PCMCIA ethernet card model 3CCFE574BT. I upgraded the kernel from the 2.4 to 2.6.8-2-686 after the initial installation. This and the 2.4 kernel work with the above mentioned card without any problems. There are some minor issues with the ACPI support (I think: the primary issue being that shutdown will not automatically power down, I have to do it manually). I had downloaded the 'latest' code some while back for my home system (2.6.14.4) and copied it to the laptop, configured (minimal changes to the configuration - made sure all ACPI functions I could find that made sense were enabled), built kernel-image and kernel-headers (make-kpkg...) and installed. The PCMCIA ethernet card was not recognized. I've repeated the above with the 'stock' source for 2.6.8 from the Debian archives, with the same result. I can't find or configure the driver for this card, even though the source file, 3c574_cs.c, is in the directory structure for the kernel source. I have only used the 'make xconfig' configuration method, so it may be that one of the others is more robust. Or there may be other issues. Your suggestions and pointers are much appreciated. Re: kernel 2.6 SMP on fresh install
The only reference in the online manual from your websight says to install the single processor kernel first then compile new kernel (even though the installation DVD has 2.4 smp and 2.6 smp on it). If it is possible, I would like to be able to select 2.6 smp from the beginning of the installation. If there is no way of doing that, will it be available in the future? well, i dont think there is an smp kernel in the installer. so you could roll your own installer. (there is online documentation for that) i dont know what documentation you found, but there are smp kernels available (precompiled, of course) via apt. (use aptitude) i doubt there would be one included in an installer in the future, but you never know. out of curiousity, why is it so important to install an smp kernel right away? -matt zagrabelny -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: kernel 2.6 SMP on fresh install
The easiest way I've found to get a 2.6 SMP kernel on installation is to select the 'expert26' install mode. There's an option to choose which kernel you'd like to install, and 2.6-SMP is one of the choices. The 'expert' part of it is somewhat misleading: if you've installed Debian before, you'll be fine. No chance when I use the new kernel 2.6, the CDrom is not detected again NB: same problem with kernel 2.6 of the official sarge distro !! I have installed in the same machine without any problem Mepis, knoppix and other on-live CD, which use the kernel 2.6 This often happens if the BIOS is set to combined mode, where the SATA HD is made to appear as an ide disk. If set to native/enhanced/seperate mode, it tends to detect just fine. Some companies (like Dell) don't give you a bios option to change. If this is an option on your system, it is the simplest. With 2.6.15 kernel and newer there is a boot option for enabling atapi support that I believe may solve this. 2.6.16 might make it the default. It fails on a cannot access /dev/console kernel panic. I understand that this is due to the disks not being accessible. I have seen reference to changing the kernel arguments from root=/dev/hda2 to root=/dev/sda2 . I have tried this with no success. I have then tried to do an install from the netinstall 31r0a ISO. Doing either a linux26 or an expert26 it fails to find the CD drive after the initial boot and language selections. It is rather important that I am not left with an unbootable system - I need to keep my working 2.4 system viable until I have a working alternative. I am sure that there must be documentation on this problem somewhere. Please can someone point me at it. Re: kernel 2.6, threads y top
Andrew Nelson wrote: This is your problem, the new versions of GCC wont compile the current Kernel sources in Debian. You can That's new to me. I have compiled both 2.6.10, 2.6.11 and 2.6.12 successfully with GCC 4.X on my bleeding edge sid system. Actually just 2 hours ago I did a total recompile of 2.6.12, just after having done a dist-upgrade! I am however excluding absolutely everything that I do not need (also as modules). As far as I am concerned the kernel compilation problems was resolved in one of the first fix-release to the new compiler. Wheras the kernel itself compiles just fine I imagine that there some non C++ compliant programmed modules/drivers that can make the new and more strict compiler choke.
