Correction: the 4TB drive is a Western Digital WD40EFPX.  I was reading
it by shining a flashlight through a gap in the frame and squinting from
a wide angle because I didn't want to take the box apart yet again.

Note for the future: hdparm -i can give you that info. If you think that's
changed since boot, hdparm -I reads it from the drive.

I've trying several of the suggestions people have kindly posted here.
The /etc directory on the new drive was getting messed up badly enough
that I decided to try copying the 500GB drive's root partition to the
4TB drive using dd. The machine hung partway through the subsequent
boot. So I wiped the root partition and re-installed Debian from
scratch, leaving the /home partition intact.

But the real magic was the re-installation of the Steam launcher.
Since my Portal icons were on my desktop, and clicking them made it
run (sort of), I was fooled into thinking everything was still there.
But I found a detailed set of instructions for installing Steam at
https://wiki.debian.org/Steam and followed them. This installed or
overlaid the missing or broken parts and presto! my sound is now clean.

Many thanks to everyone for your help. This a good lesson to not take
too many things for granted, and also to be a bit more adventurous.
(A full Debian re-install really doesn't take that long...)

Thanks, I think this is the answer! I was having no problems today but
noticed that the PC was connected to 5Ghz. Sometimes it connects at
2.4Ghz. When I disabled 5Ghz and forced the PC to use 2.4Ghz the problem
came back. So now all I need to do is seperate those services and/or tie
the PC to 5Ghz.

The PC is a laptop but I never move it from the desktop. I am using a
USB mouse and USB keyboard adapter to an old IBM keyboard.

So unless you've updated or installed new hardware or software it's
probably not a firmware/software issue.

> I have tried rebooting. I tried

It's possible that wifi or usb 3.0 could be interfering with your
bluetooth speakers - eg
https://www.zdnet.com/article/usb-3-and-usb-c-devices-can-cause-problems-with-wi-fi-and-bluetooth-connections-but-theres-a-solution/
https://sortatechy.com/spot-and-fix-bluetooth-interference-with-wifi/

If your PC is using wireless and can use a 5Ghz channel, try moving
your PC wireless to a 5Ghz channel first.
If you PC only supports 2.4Gh wireless you can install linssid
  https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/linssid
and pick a relatively unused channel for your PC wireless. Or just
try channels 1, 6 and 11 and see if any of those makes a difference..

If you're using a USB 3.0 device on your PC try turning it off or
moving it to a USB 2.0 port and see if that fixes the bluetooth
interference.

I installed Falkon and Konqueror. I tried Falkon and it worked fine, no
sound problems. But then I tried Google-chrome again and that was
working fine too, and so was Firefox-esr. The problems have gone away
and even rebooting doesn't bring them back. Maybe one of those browsers
brought a better library with it.

Re: Bluetooth sound problems Debian 12 GNOME

2024-03-18 Thread Jan Krapivin
Good news. Looks like I have solved the problem. As a last resort I have
bought another one wi-fi receiver, third one. It has *Realtek RTL8763BW*
chip

and *two antennas*. And finally all works fine. I have spent some hours,
using Bluetooth headphones, waiting for problems, but they hadn’t occur.
Small problem is that LTS Kernel 6.1 doesn’t support this device, so I have
used Liquorix kernel, which I have installed earlier. Though, I don’t need
this kernel, as it haven’t helped me with sound interrupts, which was my
hope at first. So… I bought more old Wi-fi receiver with *Realtek
RTL8761BUV* chip with antenna and it also works fine, and also works with
stable 6.1 kernel.

I am glad that situation found its resolution, though it is strange for me
that USB-dongle Bluetooth receiver (I don’t know the exact model) and
receiver on an internal wi-fi adapter (AX 210) have worked so poorly both.
Though I was in the distance not more than 2 meters from receiver.

Thanks for help

I think in you case it would be more productive to enable debug logs

drops or lost connections causing pauses till reconnect.

Just a wild guess, unlikely it is true. Headphones might report battery
charge level using a vendor protocol extension. 85 and 88 are decreasing
in later messages.

Sound stream may be interrupted when headphones decide to balance
battery discharge by switching device that communicates with laptop.

Perhaps messages related to input devices are different because it is

Hello again. I have used *pactl subscribe *command and i think that in the
moment of sound interrupt there are the corresponding lines:

"Event 'remove' on sink-input #353
Event 'new' on sink-input #358
Event 'change' on sink-input #358"

As for journald i have a lot of such errors, but they don't influence the
audio quality:

"Mar 11 22:20:13 deb wireplumber[1357]: RFCOMM receive command but modem
not available: AT+XIAOMI=1,1,102,85,88,27,174"

There are some other mentions of the bluetooth/headphones, but they don't
meet the moment of sound issues. Full journald -f log is in an attachment.

I must say that i had an opportunity today to test a laptop with Debian 12
XFCE laptop with Pulseaudio and the problem is the same there. But, as i
said, on a laptop with Linux Mint XFCE everything is fine. That's strange.
What is the main difference between Linux Mint and Debian here..?

I also tried Liquorix 6.7 kernel but it didn't help.

Thanks.

The link above has an example

dumpcap -i bluetooth0

Another tool is

hcidump -w /tmp/bt.pcap

However at first I would check logs using journalctl. Maybe debug should
be enabled for bluez and PipeWire.

At first I thought that problem can be in the headphones, though it have
worked fine with Android phone and Linux Mint XFCE on a other laptop.

Is XFCE configured to use pulseaudio or PipeWire as GNOME?

So I bought another headphones with support of different codecs: SBC,
AAC, and AptX.

Another option might be LC3 codec from Bluetooth LE (5.2 Basic Audio
Profile) if it is supported by the headphones.

Though in mSBC there are no interruptions. I wonder why mSBC works fine
and SBC no..?

Either a software/hardware bug or some piece of software disables power
saving for handsfree/headset profiles to achieve low latency, but for
A2DP device tries to sleep after some period of time. At least SBC
allows to decrease bitrate if connection is unreliable. I have read
somewhere that current drivers can not increase bitrate without
reconnection. It is just speculations, do not take it too serious.

Ouch.

Please get started doing some kind of backups.  Simple approaches
include:

1.  Connect a USB drive (flash, HDD, SSD, whatever).  Hopefully, the
desktop environment will display a pop-up dialog with to mount the USB
drive file system and display it in a file manager.  Then open another
file manager.  Drag and drop files from your hard disk drive or solid
state drive to the USB drive to back up.  Drag them the other way to
restore.  It helps to create folders with year, month, day-of-month
names (e.g. 20240118) on the USB drive, so that you can back up the
same file repeatedly and retain older copies.  Then put the USB drive
off-site, get another USB drive, and continue with backups.  Every
month or so, swap the on-site and off-site USB drives.

2.  If your computer has a CD/DVD/BD burner drive, buy a spindle of
blank discs.  Look for a CD/DVD/BD burner application via your Start
menu (or whatever it is called).  Burn important files to an optical
disc periodically, and as needed.  Keep the burned discs off-site.

Another useful strategy is to put your operating system on one HDD/SSD
and put your data on a second HDD/SSD.  When you need to re-install
your operating system, you can shut down, disconnect the data drive
SATA cable, boot installer media, and install the operating system.
When the new operating system is working, you shutdown, connect the
data disk SATA cable, boot, and configure the system to mount the data
drive.

What backport package(s) did you require?

If you are using Xfce, right click on a blank area of any panel and

I found the same issue. For me, the issue was that timidity-daemon was
taking exclusive access to audio ports.

And uninstalling timidity-daemon didn't help.

Try this:
-look at control panel ->audio, see the available outputs / profiles
-find pipewire processes and kill them
-after some second, open again control panel -> audio and see if more
profiles appear
-if they appear, try to select them. For me, it was "analog stereo
output" profile and "line out" device. Perhaps it's not the same text,
my install is not in english language".

On my system it had two output devices one to send audio through the

Check the volume control's tabs for Output Device and
Configuration; frequently PA decides there is no output or it
should go to a recently-plugged-in device with no speakers or
headphones attached, or a muted physical volume control.

pulseaudio is provided by pipewire-pulse if you use pipewire. And you
should have wireplumber for your user. Check packages and systemd

Are you sure you have no sound at all, and not just have really really
low volume?

I have a similar problem where I need to raise the volume in alsamixer

I'm living on the command line most of the time. If sound doesn't work
over here for me since I need to use a screen reader, the computer becomes
a paperweight. I'm glad that fix worked for you and I should have told
you to do that command as root. If that command ever fails, alsa got
locked up and you need to locate alsa.lck in the lock directory and delete
it then run the amixer command again. I've had that happen earlier myself
from time to time and figure it's a good bit of information to have as a
back out method.

I have no idea why the message comes from but also how pulseaudio
communicates with the rest of the system.

Please check if pulseaudio is really running by checking with ps.
If the communication is running via dbus check if dbus is running.
If the communication is via TCP or UPD and localhost please check if
there is no firewall rule which blocks the traffic.

With "pactl list" or "pcctl list short" you can identify some cryptic
address of your sound card.

With something as (taken from my system)
"pactl set-sink-volume alsa_output.pci-_00_14.2.analog-stereo +2%"
you can adjust the volume.

Or you simple try alsamixer which comes with some ncurses looking GUI.

It just upgraded my kernel using "make deb-pkg" in the upstream kernel

You may need to give normal users added privileges. Or it may be that you
need to set your running group or user identity to something else in order
to use aplay effectively. Could that be the group named audio?

See help for the newgrp command. Or just as you have done, try to craft the
right sudo command to invoke it the way you want. Then you could add a
shorthand to it in sudoers or create a shell alias accordingly.

Or, not recommended, you could change the aplay executable or front-end to
it in order to make it a set[ug]id executable.

It lists the card when I reboot the

I am trying to make it work; so here is the update.

I tried to experiment with my machine and found that if I plug-out and
plug-in the USB sound card again, it is not shown by "aplay -l" command
as normal user. But when I do "sudo aplay -l" it lists the USB
device. But I am part of "audio" group. "groups" command output:

--8<---cut here---start->8---
ankaj@anant:~$ groups
pankaj cdrom floppy sudo audio dip video plugdev netdev bluetooth scanner docker
--8<---cut here---end--->8---

I don’t know what other configuration is required to list my card using
"aplay -l" as a normal user? It lists the card when I reboot the
machine. But not when I plug-out and plug-in again. Any hints for this?

This could be root cause of my original problem i.e. no sound after
sleep and wake-up.

I'm not using Telegram or firefox Flatpak version but I use Flatpak
version of Wire and Signal apps and they are working just fine with audio.

I also do not have any problem with audio with Firefox available from
Debian Bullseye repo.

When you stop pulseaudio, you did a good thing. since pulseaudio was
started again, you're probably going to have to mess around in pactl to
get this fixed if that will even be possible.

Thanks Andrei. I followed the following steps:

1. Found that it is pulseaudio that is blocking the module unload.
2. systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket
3. systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service
4. Verified that now nothing is blocking snd_usb_audio (using lsof)
5. Unloaded module using "modprobe -r"
6. Loaded again using "modeprob"
7. Started pulseaudio again

Still the device is not listed in alsamixer and hence cannot play.

"alsactl init" also producing same errors as before.

Something is keeping the module busy, but according to lsmod it's not
another module.

In case you get any output from

lsof | grep /dev/snd

(this needs root or sudo)

try stopping the applications listed in the first column (the second
column is the process number).

You can try to unload and reload the corresponding kernel module. Check
the output of

lsmod | grep snd

(it's probably snd-usb-audio)

If it works it might be possible to add the module to some list so that
it is removed on suspend and loaded on resume.

I should have attached this before as well. The "alsactl init" command
is producing error messages as well. See this,

Then there is something else that is not letting "alsactl init" to
function properly; lock file as you suggested. But I couldn’t find

Thanks Jude, for the reply.

On my installation there is no ‘--init’ option. But it has ‘init’
command. I just tried that ‘alsactl init’. And there is no
‘/var/lock/alsa’ directory. But there is
‘/var/lock/asound.state.lock’. I removed this and tried with ‘alsactl
init’ again. But no positive results in both cases.

During the boot process, the system detects everything. So there must be
something in the init sequence that I can trigger manually.

alsactl --init
may help.
However alsa makes .lock files in /var/lock/alsa and you may find it
helpful to delete the lock file first then once card is set run alsactl
store. Those lock files sometimes prevent alsa from doing a proper
detection and change.

Thanks Andy, for the reply. I really appreciate this gesture.

And I am sorry I wasn’t complete in the original email. I had tried to
unplug and replug. But that also doesn’t list the device in ‘alsamixer’
and hence doesn’t work after a suspend/wakeup operation.

Is there a way to force the scan of USB sound devices manually if that
is not happening automatically? As I had posted earlier that ‘lsusb’ and
‘cat /proc/asound/cards’ do list the device. It is just that ALSA is not
seeing it.

Hi Pankaj,

It might be nothing more than the power handling, sleep modes and USB
enumeration after a laptop goes to sleep.

If you unplug/replug the USB plug which is the external sound card, is
it magically recognised again?

Re: Default sound level always zero for externally plugged usb sound system

2022-01-15 Thread Jude DaShiell
Needing sound as much as I do and having used usb sound systems, I'll add
one more suggested precaution to this info. Sometimes alsa makes .lock
files in /var/lock and these will block alsactl from working. So check
for those and delete as necessary then run alsactl store and alsa will
make those lock files for you again but with your desired settings in
place.

From memory, there are actually several ways to do this.

My preferred method is via kernel module options. E.g. for a system
where I had the opposite problem (sound would default to HDMI instead of
the on-board sound, both handled by the snd-hda-intel module) I have
this:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel-index.conf
# change order of devices
options snd-hda-intel index=1,0

(a rebuild of the initramfs and a reboot is required as far as I recall)

There are various other values possible, including negative (e.g. if a
specific device should always have lower priority).

The same should be possible by (re-)defining the 'default' output in
ALSA, usually with some /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc magic (a quick
search points to the same entries you already tried), though I'm not
sure how that will interact with PulseAudio and/or various applications
using ALSA directly.

Hope this helps,
Andrei

Because PulseAudio "sits on top of" ALSA it also depends on it. Some
command-line tools for ALSA are not installed by default though (e.g.
the package alsa-tools).

Yeah, that was it. I hadn't installed ALSA at all. I wasn't aware that
pulseaudio sits on top of ALSA.

you have

hardware -> kernel driver -> alsa -> pulseaudio -> application

- kernel driver utilizes the hardware
- alsa utilizes the kernel driver
- PA utilizes ALSA and provides a unified interface + capabilities

so it could be anything in the chain - check if you need firmware for
example if ALSA works (aplay etc) then check the next in the chain

You have to tell us more about your system. My crystal ball says you
probably missing some firmware for a sound adapter from Intel.
Install firmware package from a 'non-free' section and see if that will
help:

    # apt install firmware-intel-sound alsa-utils
To test the audio use 'speaker-test' utility:
    $ speaker-test -c2 -t wav
Also check if any channels were accidentally muted using 'alsamixer'
utility.

If you still don't have any sound, send output from commands below with
your next message:

    $ lspci -knnv | grep -A6 Audio
    $ aplay -l
    $ aplay -L | grep -A1 ^hw:

Hi all,

I want to use the mics from the HD4.50 and shut down the mics on the

just use the headphones. How do I do this.

Another want is to have a graphic equalizer in the chain. I can't
seem to find any software that would do this.

All help will be sincerely appreciated.

Have you tried pulseaudio?

If the devices are visible to pulse then pavucontrol can connect and
control volumes of all the devices. pulseaudio even has many modules
like a loop device to extend pulseaudio.

Yes I have pulseaudio, pulseaudio volume and any other associated
package that I could find. The problem seems to be that pulseaudio does
not recognize my headset microphones. They don't show up in the device
list.

I also find it a bit confusing when the volume panel lists front and
back microphones when there is no back microphone. The front one seems
to be the mic's on my webcam. The back one ???

Dear Dan,

I came across a website which said to use the index parameter
Hence I create this in /etc/modprobe.d/snd_amd.conf
with content

options snd_hda_intel power_save=1 index=1,0

The sound is infintely better now and there is no more fluttering
sound and no leaking of right channel into left which had caused the
distructive interference like audio.
Thanks

I would guess that Windows is setting internal mixer parameters
differently.

Try killing pulseaudio, running alsamixer, and seeing if you can
change the behavior with any of the available switches or

Re: cracking sound from left channel

2020-03-28 Thread Bhasker C V
Thanks Dan,
The audio cracking comes up only after a suspend resume or reboot when
done on its own
If I boot into windows, reboot the system (without switchoff) into
linux, the sound is fine. The next time i reboot into linux the issue
comes back.

The sound is as if the speaker paper of an old speaker is torn. The
fluttering sound when there is high bass on the headphones. The sound is
clear
and fine when on windows and when on linux when immediately booted after
windows.

This to my limited knowledge feels like windows writes something to the
config registers or downloads a firmware which makes sound card work
fine but then when cold booted into linux, linux is missing to do
something. ... may be I am wrong.

Does this happen with every playback format and program, or just
some?

Check all mixer settings: it's possible that the motherboard's
audio amplifier is being overdriven, or that there are inputs
which should be muted but aren't.

Really, the problem seems to be lying on Pulsaudio configuration, not

I think all modern applications should use pulse (PA) as interface to the
audio system. The problems with some applications are due to the fact that
they are not using PA as an interface - as far as I know. Depends which
application is started first, it can and will block the audio system.
