hi,

  w32codecs
you apparently added debian-multimedia.org site to your
apt/sources.list, but didn't import the gpg key. all packages are
authenticated using the gpg and missing key leads to this error message.

issuing
aptitude install debian-multimedia-keyring; aptitude update
should help here. it's actually wise to install all *-keyring packages
if they are not installed already.

For MPlayer and WMV9 w32codecs is no longer necessary. One less non-free
package...

In experimental (and maybe unstable?) Totem provides a very good browser
plugin.

Hi,

If those are WMV8/9 I think ffmpeg (use ffplay) in unstable can play
these. Xine uses ffmpeg, so it could work, but I'm not sure if the
unstable packages have been updated yet.

Optionally, install ffmpeg or MPlayer from this repository:
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/

gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg isn't updated with WMV support, so Gstreamer based
players can't play these formats yet.

There are a lot of programs out there which can play .wmv files. My suggestion
is to use kaffeine. It can be installed by doing

sudo apt-get install kaffeine

Re: how to play .wmv files on Debian..???

2006-10-15 Thread Jonathan Roberts
The long and the short...The short: install w32codecs package after enabling the repository http://www.debian-multimedia.orgThe long:As far as I'm aware, no matter whether you're using Gnome or KDE you need to do the following at the terminal (can probably be done with synaptic too but I find this quicker and easier):
su -[enter root password]
nano /etc/apt/sources.listAdd the following line to the end of the file:#codecsdeb
http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch mainChange etch to whichever distribution you are using
i.e. sarge or sid. Exit and save the file (ctrl-x) then back at the terminal:apt-get updateapt-get install w32codecsAnd that's it! .wmv should now play in any media player that handles video: I myself use Totem with Xine backend as supplied by default in Debian but it will work just as well with mplayer etc. Hope this helps, ooo and .mp3 etc should all work too!
