The VirtualBox version from www.virtualbox.org offers to download and install/
update the Extension Pack automatically. I also have the Guest Additions, and
tried both USB2 and USB3. It does work, just not with Windows7. On the internet,
I see more people having problems with W7 and USB in VB.

My findings are that USB is recognised in vbox, whether it is mounted in linux
or not. However, this text advises against it:

www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#settings-usb
"Be careful with USB devices that are currently in use on the host. For example,
if you allow your guest to connect to your USB hard disk that is currently
mounted on the host, when the guest is activated, it will be disconnected from
the host without a proper shutdown. This may cause data loss."

OK, I installed virtualbox and virtualbox-dkms from Sid.
Indeed, I have it working in testing with 5.18.0-1-amd64 now.
In VB, I have Windows XP and Windows 7 installed.
In XP, USB can be accessed. In W7, it still says: 'no devices available'.
There seems to be a special USB problem with W7, which I have not sorted out
yet.
Anyway, made considerable progress!

I have the Virtualbox 6.1.34 package for Debian 11, downloaded from
www.virtualbox.org, working fine in Debian 12 (Bookworm).

Have you succeeded in gaining support for USB? I haven't yet got past
the and guest Additions stage.

Indeed, USB appears not to be working. (Never used it.)
I have dkms and dh-dkms installed.
The VirtualBox-6.1 deb has been installed and upgraded with 'dpkg -i'.
It also puts VBoxGuestAdditions.iso into /usr/share/virtualbox.
Then in the guest OS you can choose Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image...
from the menu.
More about installing and maintaining the guest additions:
www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#additions-linux

I should also note that right now there appear to be problems with the latest
kernel, 5.18.0. The message in the terminal where VB was started from, says:
"WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (5.18.0-1-amd64) or it failed to load."
Probably a temporary problem. When starting Debian with the previous kernel
5.17.0, VB still works.

You'll need to download and install the closed source
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack from their site to get USB3 working.
From memory USB2 will work with the guest-additions-pack; but could be
USB1. The USB needs to be mounted in linux for it to be recognised in vbox.

I only use USB to update my portable apps at my volunteer job. The tech
area is run by contracted MSCertified techies. My experience is that
they aren't familiar with gmail basics, so I'm not sure they belong in

Nearly. To be fair though that's usually not Debian specific, the latest
patch for our own packages for instance was liberally taken from
Arch Linux. The VB folks too are constantly trying to keep up with a
moving target as is the kernel and basically every changelog sports a
line or two announcing as much. And then these guys are (or have been
anyway) cranking out releases like hardly anything that's (mostly) free
software after all, maybe apart from Linux itself. In fact I dimly
remember FreeBSD at some point giving up on it more or less completely,
they were pretty much on their own and hopeless. We're already lucky
Linux is just big enough to be supported and somehow worth it, how
long, who knows. One probably shouldn't be surprised though if
something like this perhaps doesn't always, immediately work OOB on the
shiniest, newest kernel releases. If at all possible and stability is
the main thing, it's a typical use case for an LTS kernel by the way.

Oliver

Yes, I was using it a few years ago, and a new Debian kernel made the
guest additions unusable. I forget what I needed them for, but gave up
on VB then. I dare say a later version of the VB additions fixed the
problem, but there was no knowing how long this would take, or whether
this would happen after every kernel upgrade.

It's always(1) been available in sid. VB has still got the same issue
WRT migrating to testing; Work may still be ongoing, in the background,
to overcome the issue. It's academic to me as I don't use VB. That

My recollection is that it has always been available in sid. There are
two slightly different meanings for "removed from Debian". There is
total removal as a result of things like licensing, which results in the
package being removed from all Debian distributions (including unstable
and experimental). Then there is removal from testing (and therefore
stable) as a result of major bugs or inability to provide security
support. This is the case with packages like VirtualBox, MySQL (and
mostly anything else from Oracle), where upstream refuses to provide
information concerning which changes address which security
vulnerabilities. That information is necessary for the Debian security
team to properly support packages in a stable release.

Status of Virtualbox in debian

2022-06-20 Thread Anders Andersson
I remember when Virtualbox was removed from debian, and I remember the
reasons. That's why I was surprised when I saw a recent message to the
list where a user tried to install it. Searching for "virtualbox"
indeed shows me that it is available in stretch-backports and sid:

Has something changed that makes virtualbox workable again, or has it
*always* been available in sid?
