Do you have an sources.list(5) configuration line for VirtualBox?

2023-12-23 08:15:57 root@taz ~
# egrep '^deb' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/90-virtualbox.list
deb https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bullseye contrib

The only line in that subdirectory is:

deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main

Virtualbox has been removed from Debian stable versions - see

Oracle.

If you've nothing that depends on either particularly, I'd recommend
virt-manager and the kvm/qemu universe.

VirtualBox isn't in the official Debian repositories, so you likely
used Oracle's repository to install it at some point and then removed
that repository from your apt configuration (possibly as a part of
installing VMWare; in general, having more than one hypervisor
installed on the same system is discouraged). Alternatively, you might
have installed VirtualBox using a manually downloaded .deb file.

Either re-add Oracle's repository per
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads#Debian-basedLinuxdistributions
and try `apt reinstall virtualbox-7.0` (this is probably the easiest
if you want to keep running VirtualBox).

Or reinstall the .deb using dpkg -i if you originally installed
VirtualBox that way.

Or you could try `apt remove virtualbox-7.0`.

If you don't want to run VirtualBox going forward, the easiest way
might be to just `apt purge virtualbox-7.0`.

(base) comp@AbNormal:~$ sudo apt purge virtualbox-7.0

Depending on the current state of the package, you might need to
reinstall it before you can remove it.

After either remove or purge (see the apt man page for the difference
between the two) you should be able to reinstall it later if you want
to.

More generally, I agree with Andy's recommendation to check out
KVM/QEMU unless you have something in particular which depends on
using a specific other hypervisor. You may want to check out AQEMU as
a replacement for virt-manager; I haven't tried it myself, but based
on screenshots I have seen it looks like a closer match for
VirtualBox's GUI tooling, and you will still have access to the full
power of KVM through virsh if you want that.

Unpack it, run it from a cli, it asks for the model number string of
the printer or scanner, goes to brother'sown linux repo and downloads
the latest version available for that device and installs and
configures it to Just Work with cups IF you have removed cups-browsed
thereby disallowing cups from setting up the default printer driver
which cannot drive the printer in anything but waste paper mode.
Brothers own drivers support every feature the printer has, accessible
from the web interface cups serves at localhost:631. Despite the poor
publicity I've seen about factory drivers, brothers drivers for linux
work 100% here. Linux support is excellent for their products.

Thank you for your encouraging reply. I have the Brother MCF-L2710DW

Well since you specced A4 paper, did you have A4 paper in the tray? and
of course, did it work? You may need to goto locolhost:631 with your
browser and configure the options to suit your environment. Also, that
uuid is unique to that printer, so it must be correct. else you'd
collect a no such device error. An ls of /dev/serial/by-id might serve
as a checking src. klipper, the better 3d printer driver, uses that to
make sure its driving the right printer since usb has rather poor id
mechanisms. from my printers output:

root@mkspi:~# ls -l /dev/serial/by-id
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Dec 3 01:17
usb-Klipper_rp2040_E5D94D950DCD5658-if00 -> ../../ttyACM0
the E5D9. is a unique to that chip serial number, no other rp2040
has it. So do all the stm32 controller chips.

Unforch that is not always true, as witnessed by this machine:
gene@coyote:~/src/klipper-docs$ ls -l /dev/serial/by-id
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Dec 7 11:39 usb-1a86_USB2.0-Serial-if00-port0
-> ../../ttyUSB1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Dec 7 11:39
usb-FTDI_USB_HS_SERIAL_CONVERTER_FTDHG45D-if00-port0 -> ../../ttyUSB0
where there aren't any chip serial numbers, but cups seems to have other
ways of assuring its driving the correct device as a printer. One of
those is actually driving a CM11A X10 home controller.

Probably more info than you need if the test page worked,

Does synaptic still insist on the brscan4 package after it is uninstalled?

In that case, there must be some dependency involved. I have not used

brscan4 is not in the official Debian repos. Perhaps you have installed
it from another source which has disappeared.

Superficial Internet search suggests that it is a Brother thing.

Indeed it is.

Brother have some installation helper script, but that is not really
playing nicely with the idea of using remote repos for installation.
It may be simplest to use dpkg to uninstall the brscan4 package, do
the necessary upgrades etc., and then install the brother stuff again.

That way, you'll also have relatively up to date Brother drivers.

If you want to avoid the odyssey through Brother's web site, have a

It's for a Brother printer, came from Brother's web site. I find my brscan4
installed to /opt/brother/scanner/. Hopefully this can help you find the archive
you downloaded on your Bullseye disk instead of needing to hunt for it on
Brother's website.

I'd not recommend that, but look for the brother install script in his
old /home/$user/Downloads directory, running that and giving it the
exact model name of the brother printer, will goto the brother site and
download the latest version. But to get it to work at all, may require
you use the package manager to remove and purge cups-browsed. The cups
driverless stuff over-rides brothers stuff and the printer is reduced to
the lowest common version, duplex disappears, tray src selection
defaults to tray 1, and a color printer becomes black and white.
Brothers drivers can run the printer to its full capbility.

look for: linux-brprinter-installer-*

If the printer is an MFC, you'll also get the brscan stuff for x-sane.
And w/o cups-browsed, they Just Work flawlessly.

Or if you goto the brother site, that is the script you will dl first,
set chom +x and then run from the cli. The version may change which is
why I starred the line above.

Am having a can-do kind of day so I took a poke at it, too. Searched
for brscan4 alone:

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/brscan4

Gives some insight into package interoperability. It became instantly
clear this was about printers.

My main suggestion is that you describe the problem in full,
extreme, maniacal detail such that you sweat blood and tears over
how much detail you have written, go to bed and have nightmares over
whether you have maybe gone too far with the detail, wake up
screaming at 4am bathed in cold sweat but resolve that, no, more
detail yet is required, so you go forth and you tell us what you
did, what happened, what you expected to happen, and everything
else.

Because right now what we are working with is "on Debian 12 I ran
synaptic and there was a problem and that problem did not have a
solution when I entered an unspecified query about it on Google."

That's what you gave us.

Come on, man. No one should have to be saying this.

Regards,
Andy

So eliminate the problem. Whitespace characters (& dots & underscores) in
filenames produce more trouble than they avoid. It doesn't happen with downloads
on my machines. e.g., that above would be:

file:/media/richard/debian09010-i386-1
and next, likely
file:/media/richard/debian09020-i386-1
and eventually, likely
file:/media/richard/debian10010-i386-1

ls -gG produces same result as ls -gGrt :-) With any luck the Rapture will occur
before Firefox versions reach triple digits. ;-)

Dots and underscores in filenames do little more than make filenames longer and
harder to touch type, but commonly also cause alphabetical sorts to undesirably

Use quotation marks to make the directory path a single "word"

  umount "/media/richard/Debian 9.1.0 i386 1"

(It is somewhat astounding that you can mount /dev/sr1 several times.
On ye olde Jessie kernel i have to use "-o loop" for the further mounts.)

> > > When I run Synaptic, it complains about a line in sources.list

In my /etc/apt/sources.list there is the word "deb" or "deb-src" before
the URL. man 5 source.list says:

The format for a sources.list entry using the deb and deb-src types is:
   deb [ options ] uri suite [component1] [component2] [...]

This matches the complaint about "Type 'file:...'".

So if you don't have it yet in the file, then try prepending "deb"

deb file:/home/richard/Desktop/testdvd stretch main contrib non-free

Have a nice day :)

"Type" is probably referring to the deb or deb-src entry that is missing.

I've been staring at screen too long.
That at least allows Synaptic to start.

As CD's are not "signed" so to speak I still can't access it.
But I had a closely related problem in April 2014.
I have to reread that thread to become re-educated ;/

Have you already used the repository to update your sources? why do you
want to add the cd/dvd back?

Because I don't always have internet and there are physical/mechanical
problems using the installed drive. The portable drive is convenient and
sometimes required.

I have found that immediately after install, a commented line
in sources.list resembling:
#deb cdrom:[debian_installer_version_arch_24-date_etc] stretch main

and if I uncomment this line, and mount the install media at /media/cdrom
then apt is able to continue installing pkgs from it.

If that won;t work for you, try apt-cdrom

I'll check that out tomorrow.
Thanks

good luck

I don't know about Synaptics, but for the command line you have
to put a file name in quotes whenever it contains spaces (this
is due to the shell separating arguments (by default) at whitespace:
umount sees four arguments then: "/media/richard/Debian", "9.1.0",
"i386" and "1". None of those are a mount point or device (lucky
you ;), thus umount complains).

"testcd" is not the same as "testdvd".

Now findmnt returns

Synaptic still returns

Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.

Is the problem that the dvd is automounted at boot?

Synaptic problem - physical access to CD drive related

2018-01-05 Thread Richard Owlett
I have 3 machines with differing problems physically accessing the
CD/DVD drive. To install Debian I routinely use a USB connected drive
WITHOUT any problem by using the BIOS option to select a boot device.

The SOURCES.LIST(5) man page hints that I should be able us something like
 file:/media/richard/Debian%209.1.0%20i386%201
or
file:/media/richard/Debian 9.1.0 i386 1

Neither worked. Man page suggest the space characters to be the problem.

I did

root@stretch17oct2017:/home/richard# findmnt
TARGETSOURCE FSTYPE OPTIONS
/ /dev/sda9 ext4rw,relatime,errors=rem

.
.
.> └─/media/richard/Debian 9.1.0 i386 1 /dev/sr1iso9660
ro,nosuid,nodev,relati

root@stretch17oct2017:/home/richard# mount /dev/sr1
/home/richard/Desktop/testcd
mount: /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
root@stretch17oct2017:/home/richard#

When I run Synaptic, it complains about a line in sources.list
   file:/home/richard/Desktop/testdvd stretch main contrib non-free

The error message is

E: Type 'file:/home/richard/Desktop/testdvd' is not known on line 2 in source
list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

What can I do?
TIA

My wheezy has libapt-pkg.so.4.12 installed and your version seems
coming from squeeze, could it be that a pakage failed to upgrade? :-?

Do a locale libapt-pkg and check if tehre's any version of the library
present in the system and also try the apt-get or aptitude commands.

Do you get the same error when running apt-get or Aptitude? Which

Do you use synaptic much? You might consider reinstall it or upgrading
it. You seem to have the correct version of libapt-pkg installed for
wheezy, is Synaptic at wheezy or earlier?

According to http://packages.debian.org/stable/allpackages , version
4.10 of libapt-pkg is the version for Stable/Squeeze. What version of
Synaptic do you have? Mine is 0.75.12. If you have 0.70~pre1+b1 or
earlier, you have the wrong one.

synaptic problem?

2008-07-22 Thread Mark Neidorff
Hi,

I want to switch an installation from an IDE disk to a SATA disk. I use
synaptic to manage packages for me. The File menu has an option to generate
a package install script. So, I created a custom filter to show just
installed packages and selected that filter. (cool) Then I selected all the
packages for reinstallation (the only option). Then I selected generate
package install script from the File menu. The script that was generated
starts with
#! /bin/sh
wget
wget
wget
.
.

At least you got wget's, I only got #! /bin/sh

synaptic 0.62.1 Graphical package manager

Are you trying to create a script that will intall the same packages you have

Same. Just #!/bin/sh. I have the same version as well 0.62.1. That's
odd.

Anyway, looking at the file menu for synaptic, it has a Add downloaded

I have never used this before, so this may be a wild guess, but is it
possible that you run the script to wget the packages and then run the

I used to get the one line script and my version of synaptic is older 0.57.8.
After googling I found out that I need to select packages first. then I got
one line per selected package. But, only wget on each line.

Das hatte ich vorgestern auch. Etwas im Usenet rumsuchen ergab die Lösung,
das Cache-Limit von Apt höher zu setzen. Dazu dient in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d
eine Datei mit der Zeile:

APT::Cache-Limit 16777216; //avoid get E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room

IMHO sollte die Fehlermeldung etwas expliziter sein. Noch besser wäre, wenn
apt von sich aus vorschlägt, den Cache größer zu machen. Gibts dazu

Synaptic Problem

2005-10-30 Thread Paras pradhan
hi:

I am using synaptic_0.57.5.1_i386.deb from debian testing repository.
when i run synaptic from anyuser.. i get 'Segmentation Fault Error.

My question is what is the reason behind Segmentation Fault. Does it
have issues relating to gcc/g++ libraries?. i mean.. what happens if i
run the program that is compiled using gcc-3.3 and my system has only
gcc-4.0 and related libraries. I guess there are lots of debs in
debian repo that are compiled using gcc-3.3/g++3.3 and gcc-4.4/g++4.4
using related development libraries. what do i need to do to use both
types of programs that are compiled using gcc3.3/g++3.3 and also
gcc4.4/g++4.4 in one machine.

Confused

Paras.
