That all sounds like there are some configuration problems in your
system. Maybe you still have old configuration files which were not
upgraded properly. You could try to purge gdm and xdm and then reinstall
 them:

 apt-get --purge remove xdm gdm
 apt-get install xdm gdm

(The --purge option makes sure that all configuration files are
removed, therefore you will get the up-to-date ones from the new
packages when you install xdm and gdm again.)

Yes, that did the trick and everything seems to be working normally now
except the Wacom mouse. I'll start a new thread for that.

Thanks,

Florian's comments led me to recognize the link to ftp.nerim.net might
be the problem. I commented out and was able to complete the upgrade
though I still had to purge glibc-doc to resolve a conflict.

After completing the upgrade I had no X-windows at all. strace
/etc/init.d/gdm restart revealed no gdm in /usr/bin. I found it in
/usr/sbin and was able to start the program from there. I can now
switch back and forth between X-windows (Ctl-Alt-F7) and consoles
(Ctl-Alt-F1, etc) with no problems.

The Wacom mouse still does not work. I found and installed
xserver-xorg-input-wacom but this has not helped. The Debian Changelog
in /usr/share/doc/wacom-tools seems to indicate unresolved problems. I
will wait for new updates.

I just did the dist-upgrade from Sarge to Sid and ran into Xorg also of
course. Resolved all of that, probably because I don't have a left
handed mouse but a two-seater that runs fine.

Remains the incompatibility between Sarge's mysql and Sid's: this

As reported in another posting,

Re: X-Windows Problems, xorgcfg error

2006-05-26 Thread Thomas H. George
The thread is tangled because some of my previous posting have not shown
up as yet.

Continuing to try to get the Wacom mouse to work, ran xorgcfg. The
program runs but with output to stderror Failed to initialize module
list. strace xorgcfg shows it is looking in
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/linux. The directory
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers contains the modules for the video
drivers but no subdirectory linux.

I also went to linuxwacom webpage section on adding input devices and
used this information to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The expert
mode of xorgcfg shows these additions but still no wacom mouse.

Next I booted from a bbc-2.1 cd and used lynx to find and download the

There is, sure, but if you're stumbling with testing, how much help
can you be? I think it's better for you and Debian that you have a
working system from which you can continue to learn.

I've been running Linux since '93, Debian since the late '90's, yet
I'm still stumbling in ways. Since re-installing my system over the
weekend, I can't get my printer to work. It was fine a week ago. I
can't figure out how to get a left-handed mouse. No amount of
fiddling with xmodmap, ~/.inputrc, or gpm repeating has had any
effect. I learned how to do all that stuff a long time ago, yet here
I am running a _stable_ system which is exhibiting warts. It's bloody
annoying. Less experienced users might be tempted to give up on
Debian if stuff like that was happening to them, and that's the last
thing Debian needs.

That looks OK to me; the only thing that I notice is that you are
missing Christian Marillat's signing key. I would propose to ignore this
for now and to just comment out the ftp.nerim.net line. (I also think
you have to change sarge to etch or testing now.) When the problem
with X/gdm is settled you can always get the key as described here
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2006/05/msg02309.html
and install what you want from Marillat's packages.

[...]

I think your problem is the result of an incomplete transition from
XFree86 to Xorg. With the ftp.nerim.net line commented out, try apt-get
update again. If apt is still missing some amd64-specific keys (I don't
know too much about those) then it should at least give you the numbers
of those keys. Post these numbers here and we can tell you were to find
the corresponding keys.

With all keys provided you should be able to do apt-get install -f to
fix all unresolved issues. Once that works without errors and an
apt-get dist-upgrade tells you that there are no more packages to
upgrade, you should have a working Xorg. If that does not work we have
to take a closer look, but first apt-get has to bring your system into a
consistent state by completing the upgrade.

I can see your point. However, at some point in the near future, Etch
will become stable and then those who don't know Debian well enough to
not stumble will be expected to upgrade their machines. Someone has to
go there first.

Which archive signing keys are known to your apt-key? Post the output of

In the meantime if anyone has any quick words of advice they would be

Hello!!

My apt source list points to unstable currently. As much I don't want
to admit it, I guess I will reinstall Windows 98 on it (the original
OS). The current state of affairs is way too much trouble and time
consuming for me as of right now. As much as I like Linux, I am still
too much of a newbie to delve into the restrictive inner workings of
older hardware and Linux drivers and such. If it was a more recent
machine I would be more ambitious, but it being close to almost 8.5
years old, I think I will leave were its at. I wish to thank everyone
who tried to help me, your advice and quick responses were greatly
appreciated. Thank you again.

If you are using a 2.2 kernel, you are probably using Woody. Do the

Not sure what to do next. Perhaps at this point, should I consider a

should I reinstall it, and then save the config file?

Perhaps dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 would work. (maybe you have
tried that; I only keep debian-user posts for two days)

You are probably using 2.2, which I have no experience with. Try upgrading to 2.4 if possible, with the following command:
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-386
(You will need to reboot.)
That will bring you up to 2.4, and then you may want to upgrade to
sarge, the latest stable, and get 2.6. However with the 2.4 you
will probably fair better. Try the upgrade and then loading the
modules. On 7/22/05, Will Ness [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

First of all, this isn't a pain. This is what mailing lists are for.
Second, to see if it works, in a console run:
modprobe input
modprobe psmouse
modprobe usbhid
modprobe mousedev.
Then start x.
If that works, then add input, psmouse, usbhid, and mousedev to /etc/modules. That will load them on startup. On 7/21/05, Will Ness

2005-07-20 Thread Will Ness
Hello List!
I have an old laptop that I installed debian on. After I got help to
fix my previous apt problem, I went ahead and installed firefox. Now
my X-windows will not work, and I am hopelessly over my head as to
why. I have tried remaking the XF86config-4 file, and the end result
is that i get a screen for 4-5 secs, then it dies. The error msg is
about mouse control/font issues. I have not foggiest idea of what to
do now. Any help would be welcome at this point.

X Windows Problems

2001-08-19 Thread Patrick
Hi all. I am having a very difficult time setting up my X-Windows system.
I am VERY new to the Debian (and linux in general), and can't get my
X-Windows working correctly. What happens is that after I configure my
X-Windows in the xf86config executable and type startx, the screen goes
black, and does not come back. My ATI Radeon 32DDR video card is not on the
list, and I'm not sure what kind of default to use for this. Are there any
suggestions on how I can get my video card configured correctly? Is there a
generic I should use, or should I download a driver for it (If so, could
someone please tell me where I should get it, and how to properly install
it? Just with dselect I'm assuming?).

Also, I believe I am configuring xdm (or something like it) to manage my
windows. I'm not sure if it has something to do with this or not, but
everytime I boot up (even with an emergency backup floppy), the X-Windows
tries to start up and the screen goes black again. I have reinstalled
Debian 3 times to try and figure out what's going on, and haven't seemed to
make any progress. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Look at section 10.5 of README.dri in /usr/doc/xserver-xfree86,
Mind you this is with X 4.1 YMMV

While I have not tried X with the Radeon, I have
found that the current svga server works like magic
with ATI hardware. Get the svga server with:

  apt-get install xserver-svga

and get the standard vga server (for the setup program)
with:

  apt-get install xserver-vga16

Then type 'XF86Setup', if it asks you about using
the current config, answer no.

Under the cards section, don't use the card list but go
to the Detailed setup and make sure that the SVGA
server button is depressed.

Under the Monitor section, enter the horizontal and
vertical ranges (low-high) as found in your monitor
spec (you DO keep those, right? :) ). If you don't
have the spec, choose one of the canned configs (just
make sure your monitor can do what you indicate it
can do).

Under the Modeselection section, choose the color
depth and resolutions you want. Press Done and
see if it works.

If all is well, save the config. You can re-run the
program to setup the mouse and keyboard stuff if
you want.

Also, I believe I am configuring xdm (or something like it) to manage my

Until you get X running, remove the display manger with:

 apt-get remove xdm

and just use 'startx' for testing.

I hope this helps.

Take care,

Bullshit, never deal with Linux with such Windows methods. Reinstalling
won't solve your problems. Instead, remove the xdm package after the
installation or disable it, if you don't like the graphical login.

chmod -x /etc/init.d/?dm

I have dealt with a situation that sounds very similar to yours.
I was trying to set up a ATI Radeon VE video card with a digital flat
panel monitor. I used the most recent xfree package (4.1.0) from
the unstable branch because it indicated it had support for the ATI Radeon.
The only way I have gotten the ati driver to work at all is if the
kernel has framebuffer support and it is enabled at startup. If the
frambuffer is not enabled at startup, when the X server is started (startx) it
would hard lock and the monitor would go into power off mode.

/etc/lilo.conf
 vga=791

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
 Section Device
...
Driver ati
...
 EndSection

Another way to get it working without framebuffer stuff is by instead of
using the ati driver use the vesa driver. This is probably the
easiest solution.

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
 Section Device
...
Driver vesa
...
 EndSection

Still trying to find a solution. I did get the computer to stop locking up
though, which is good :) I found some error messages that perhaps might
make sense to you guys. They don't make too much sense to me, other than
telling me something is wrong!

Using XFree86 ATI driver version 4.3
Unknown graphics controller detected
Unknown chip descriptor in BIOS: 0x3F3F
Unknown video adapter detected
Brocktree 476 or similar RAMDAC detected
Support for this video adapter is highly experimental!

giving up.
xinit: Address family not supported by protocol (errno 97): unable to
connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I don't know if anyone can relate to these or not, but I figured it was
worth a shot. Thanks!

Re: X Windows Problems

2001-08-19 Thread R1nso13
a simple solution to prevent xdm from starting everytime you boot is to
remove xdm from /etc/rc2.d. See, whenever linux boots it runs a script that
causes the files in /etc/rcN.d where N is a number between 1 and 6 (called
runlevels). Debian is set to runlevel 2 by default so by removing xdm from
the directory executed in runlevel 2 you stop xdm from running at startup.
This is a pretty crude way of doing it compared to some stuff that was
discussed earlier this week, but its what i did and it works fine. As to how
you can boot successfully to do this in the firstplace, you need to be in
runlevel 1, which is single user mode and doesn't start xdm, and i'm not sure
how to do this short of having a specially prepared boot floppy (yea, i'm
pretty new to this myself) but it doesn't sound like you have a big problem
with re-installing sooo, you might try that, and removing xdm from runlevel 2
right from the start.
(anyone who happens to read this, please look for MY XF86Setup question, as
i'm really having some trouble with it, thanks)

to go into single user mode, type linux 1

More X windows problems

1999-04-14 Thread Small, Bradley
Ok here goes:

After getting logged back into the system, and removing the xdm and xfs from
my RC's I now have additional problems.

I am using a Microsoft Intellimouse with the wheel thingie. So when run
xf86config that is what I chose. Also, I ran gpm-mouse-test and it says that
it is on /dev/psaux and protocol ps2. The video is SiS 5597/5598 and the
monitor is DB-1765 (and I stole the HFreq and VFreq from my Win 98 driver
settings. Here is where things get weird.

If I run SuperProbe and then startx I get an Xwindows desktop to come up
very big and very ugly. However, Ctrl-Alt-kpd+ doesn't seem to change the
video mode. The mouse seems to want to stay in the upper left hand corner of
the screen and every time you try to move it, it keeps going back there.
Also, once I get back out of X I can see the error messages from starting it
and the is a message that it can't do something with the fd of the
/dev/psaux due to some kind of inappropriate ioctl. That is the gist of he
message, I'll need to copy it down and type it in some time but it was about
2 am and I just had to get some sleep.

On the other hand, if I don't run SuperProbe, when I run startx the monitor
makes a sound like it would like to switch modes, then the monitor light
turns from green to amber signifying that it is powered down. Sometimes I
can type exit or do ctrl-alt-F2 or ctrl-bksp and get back to a screen where
I can type however the mode is so messed up, that it reminds me of the old
days in the commodore world or even the early ibmpc days where you were in
text mode but the adapter wasn't.

I am using slink, I think, from CheapBytes. And I DLed XFree86 3.3.3.1 from
XFree86.org to get the support of the SiS 5597/5598 card.

I am really open to suggestions...

I having some problem in configuring X to work properly
with my video card. It's a Diamond Stealth 2500 (Alliance AT24 chip).
The screen is stretched vertically so I can't reach the bottom;
the fonts are distorteds, it's a ugly view.
I can switch resolutions up to 800x600 (for some strange reason
I can't use 1024x768 now. I did can with my old VLB 486 Diamond SpeedStar)
Is there some limitations on XFree with this card?
Is there some likely error I'm doing that somebody already know
by experience?
Any other hint?

Besides this, X is extremely slow, as I would using a ISA card!

Hi, I got this problem some time ago, and solve it replacing Xserver,
and changing Vsync and Hsync of the monitor.
I think is better you use the manual to configure your video card,
and I suggest you to use xf86config to make XF86Config file.

Good luck

X-Windows problems

1996-12-17 Thread Francesco Tapparo
Hi all,
I'm a very happy user of Debian-1.2 (great job!), which have a little problem
with the new XFree86-3.2:
sometimes, when I start XFree (I use startx), the X screen has the extreme left
part disturbed, and if I move the mouse over it, it will draw in the extreme
right part, and viceversa.
If I use xvidtune, the screen globally translate, but also the effect
translate, and it persist; but if I switch to another console, and after return
to the X screen, mostly the effect disappear.
I think that the problem is related to a installation problem which I have
faced: the XF86Setup and xf86config don't configured X-Window, because my
monitor have Hsync=60 Hz and VSync=31.5 Hz, while XFree will HSync=60.10 and
VSync=31.55 (!!).
My Card is a Oak-77 and my monitor is a goldstar VGA 640x480x256.
XF86Setup have not complained about VSync and HSync, and the I'm not sure if
the problem is this but now X work, except for the little problem explained
above.
I thank all, which will help me!
Ciao!
