Well that's depend what (and how) you wont to do with your pic.
I don't think that full automatization is possible with any app.

What is problem with GIMP: selecting part of image or make exactly the
same gradient but in different color, something else?

Maybe full automatization isn't possible but you can do it manually.
It is hard for me to tell you anything without seeing .xpm

Can you send me .xpm?

If you can't get it with GIMP hardly you'll find a more complete image
editor :-)

Maybe you only need some tutorials on the matter:

How to Digitally Color a Black White Photograph in GIMP

Google for gimp black and white colorizer and you'll find more samples.

supongo que porque los ico de m$ contienen mas de un icono en los
ficheros .ico con diferente tamaño, etc...

Trata con este comando, lo acabo de probar y me dio buen resultado:
for i in `ls *.ico`; do convert $i `basename $i .ico`.xpm ; done

kannst Du sonst auch kiconedit benutzen. Hab's am eigenen Leib erfahren.

jpeg to xpm format ??

2002-12-29 Thread daves debian
I am in the middle of a reorganising my system, I will be using jpeg.
It appears that the splashscreen needs a .xpm.gz format.

The .gz is easy, how do I get to an xpm format

Idealy I want to convert one of my jpeg images to use as the splash screen. A
while ago I found an article that showed a command to convert jpeg -- xpm

I looked in info grub but could not find anything about the splashscreen
command.

Any ideas

If you have ImageMagick installed you can run
convert image.jpg image.xpm
to convert an image. ImageMagick supports a wide variety of formats.

AFAIK, grub has no splashscreen command. RedHat ships a patched grub
which includes support for showing pretty pictures, because suits
think a pretty system is a good system.

If you want to use a graphical grub screen, I think you'll have to patch
and compile grub yourself.

There is a list in the NEWS file, but maybe more usefully there should be
a sample .Xdefaults file under Help - Sampleslots of good stuff in
there.

One more thought - round your nice pixmap text area you have the fringe of
Xemacs grey. If as well as

Emacs*EmacsFrame.default.attributeBackgroundPixmap:
~/aaa/bitmaps/backgroundtile.xpm

you also have

Emacs.default.attributeBackground: whiteor some suitable shade of
grey, matching your pixmap, the grey streak will disappear.

xemacs background won't show an .xpm file

2002-06-19 Thread Glen Lee Edwards
I posted this question to the xemacs list. No one has responded, so I
thought I'd try here:

I recently bought a new PC and installed Debian 3, XFree86 Version
4.1.0.1 from a Debian package. On my Red Hat box, I was able to
display a pixmap, grey.xpm, as the background in xemacs. For a screen
shot, visit:

http://members.fcwm.org/glen/fvwm/fvwm2.jpg

I can't get it to work on the Debian box. Instead of displaying the
pixmap I'm getting a solid black background. Following is the line I'm
using in .xemacs.conf:

(default ((t (:size 11pt :stipple /home/glenlee/.fvwm/paper/grey.xpm
:family Lucidatypewriter))) t)

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong? Am I missing a library or
something?

Thanks,

Glen

Don't know what's wrong with the Lisp, if anything. Xemacs 21.4 puts its
config files in ~/.xemacs, and calls them init.el and custom.el(from
customize, not to be edited by hand). Have you deliberately changed that?

I usually set such things from .Xdefaults eg

Emacs*EmacsFrame.default.attributeBackgroundPixmap:
~/aaa/bitmaps/backgroundtile.xpm

Then do

xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults to start the new settings then restart Xemacs

Most of this is in the Xemacs FAQ

It's a matter of priorities. I have to work on functionality first. I
worry about looks when I have the time. Right now that isn't on my
priority list. Also, that's an old screen shot. I'm now using KDE as
the desk top manager with FVWM as the window manager. I haven't had
the time to tweak the two so they work better together, but for now
they're doing what I need. (kicker isn't showing all the active

(setq custom-file .xemacs.conf) ; if true custom file
becomes .xemacs.conf
(setq custom-file .emacs.conf)) ; if false custom file
becomes .emacs.conf - odd way of doing if - else.
(load custom-file)

which is word for word what .emacs used to read. It's doing a pretty
good job of pulling most of my configuration options. But some seem to
have mysteriously disappeared. Unfortunately there are so many things
I'm currently trying to fix on this box that I haven't had time to try
to do a step by step check of what's going wrong where with xemacs.

batch converting PNG icons to XPM

2001-08-05 Thread Haim Ashkenazi
Hi

I'm trying to convert many PNG icons (with transparency) to xpm with
transparency to use as icons with application that doesn't support png
(tkdesk). I tried to find a 'mogrify' or 'convert' option to keep the
transparency but nothing works. every time I'm converting an image the
transparent pixels becomes grey. I don't want to use the '-transparency'
option because that would change all the pixels that use this color.
any ideas? (of course I'm looking for a command-line application, not
X...)

btw, some of the png files have transparency that xpm doesn't support
(xpm only supports on/off bits) so I'll use the default 127 threshold
(the default when converting with gimp).

Thanks in advance

OK... a good bet to find the source tarball / package of a program is to
check at www.THE-PROGRAM.org (where 'THE-PROGRAM' is of course the program
you wish to find icons of). In my previous example that would have been
www.windowmaker.org

This might not work for EVERYTHING, but many major applications have a web

The expression I used, source tarballs for a given package meant : the
source tarball for the package you're looking for .

compiling wine - xpm missing

1999-10-03 Thread Kenneth Scharf
After re-installing slink on a revamped upgraded
computer (new cpu/mb, bigger hd, new graphics card,

tried to build. Wine built ok, but won't run. I get

please install xpm and recompile.

I have the following packages installed:
xpm4.7, xpm4g, xpm4g-dev. The xpm.h file is found in
the include path chain. (The configure scripts did NOT
set the HAVE_LIBXXPM). I tried setting this variable
in the configure generated header file and then wine
did not link (having not found the required
references).

I was able to build wine on the previous install of
slink, but I cannot figure out what library is
missing!! Does anyone have an idea what package needs
to be installed?

libforms and xpm? Problems upgrading LyX

1999-09-27 Thread Davide Anchisi
I have LyX_0.12.0 working on my pc, installed with dpkg on a
debian-slink distribution.
Now I'm trying to upgrade LyX to 1.0.3 starting from sources.
The problem is that when configure ends running it gives the following
error message:

The following problems have been detected by configure.
Please check the messages below before running 'make'.
(see the section 'Problems' in the INSTALL file)

** Can't find libXpm. Please check that the Xpm library
is correctly installed on your system.

** Can't find xpm.h. Please check that the Xpm library
is correctly installed on your system.

** Can't find libforms or libxforms. Please check that the xforms
library
is correctly installed on your system.

** Can't find forms.h. Please check that the forms library
is correctly installed on your system.

I checked with dpkg -l and even with dselect: those packages are
installed (and LyX_0.12 is working).
What does it mean? What can I do?

(I tryed to say to configure where these library are, but where are
they?
Using the find command I could only find that there is a libforms0.88
and an xpm4.7 in /usr/doc/ and a libforms.so.0.88 in /usr/X11R6/lib/ .
How can I find where they are, or where are likely to be? What have I to
look for?)

Thanks for any help,

 Davide

Different distributions and systems sometimes have libraries in different
locations; configure scripts try a few, and usually have an option to tell
them explicitly where to look for them (try ./configure --help).

Using the find command I could only find that there is a libforms0.88 and
 an xpm4.7 in /usr/doc/ and a libforms.so.0.88 in /usr/X11R6/lib/ .

You also need to have their -dev packages installed.

finally, does anybody know how to fix it ? :)

You need to install the xpm4g-dev package in order to get the
headers. The xpm4g package only installs whats needed for running xpm4
binaries. The xpm4g-dev installs what you need to actually compile an
XPM dependent program.

Well, think about this: How often are .h files needed at runtime? Never.
Therefore, xpm.h would not be in the X Pixmap run-time libraries.

Install the xpm4g-dev package, which contains the pixmap stuff that is
used when compiling XPM related stuff.

Problem with update-menus RXVT-XPM

1998-05-13 Thread Kiyan Azarbar
I'm trying to start an rxvt with an xpm background Everything's cool,
except that I have to run rxvt-xpm instead of rxvt (when did this
happen, BTW? It used to be different) However, I can't get a -scale
option to work. The best I can do is:

rxvt-xpm -pixmap /path/to/pixmap\;100x100

Which scales it fine. However, it's the damn semicolon that's doing me
in. You have to use a backslash in bash, obviously, for the stuff
after it to even get to rxvt-xpm. The problem I have is in the
/etc/menu files... I'm using Joost's update (update-menus) package,
for keeping track of stuff. I'm trying to have a few different rxvt's
started as different menu options (different as in, with different
backgrounds). However, setting the command to:

command=rxvt-xpm -pixmap /path/to/pixmap\;100x100

doesn't work, nor does leaving out the backslash. In both cases the
geometry string isn't getting to rxvt-xpm, because it just loads the
pixmap without scaling (if the rxvt is resized, one can see that it is
being tiled, effectively)

Is there any way to get around this? Obviously, update-menus is
stripping out the backslash, or something along the way is.

This just happened this week after a bulk upgrade. (Other than that the

A similar problem happened to me several months ago. I don't remember the

then by reinstalling tcl tk. But this time around, I tried reinstalling
python-tk, tcl, tk, xpm and xlib, and none of them helped.

Q: How to change icon bitmap for rxvt-xpm??

1997-07-04 Thread jim
I'd like to have a special icon bitmap for when rxvt-xpm is

I believe this is done in your window manager. I run fvwm2 and
accomplished this by adding a line of:

Style rxvtIcon xterm-linux.xpm

into my /etc/X11/fvwm2/system.fvwm2rc file.

I'm trying to compile wine ... we don't seem to have a package for it,
understandable, since it's only in alpha at the moment.

There is a package for wine under project/experimental. I maintain it.

Wait - you're saying that creating a new updated debian package for wine
1.0 would be to apply win-1.0*.diff to the .deb?

The diffs for the Debian source contain nothing but the Debian directory.
Thus, you can patch any version of the wine source and probably build
it without any changes (other than to debian/changelog to get the version
number correct).

I should mention that the version of Wine currently in project/experimental
can run Excel quite reliably (from whatever version of office that included
word 6.0 for Win3.1).

Not to the .deb exactly but to the Debian Source package. Then you update
debian/changelog and run build (from the dpkg-dev package in devel) and
voila! you have a new .deb. You will also need the pgp package to sign
your .deb -- a must if you ever intend to distribute it to other people.
Because of export restrictions, pgp is only available in non-us sites.

Anyway, I put the source in /usr/local/src/wine, run the config scripts
and then run make, but it complains that it can't find /X11/xpm.h ... I
_do_ have xpm installed, but find says I don't have an xpm.h file
anywhere on my disk. Should I install xpm source? And if so, where does
it go?

There is (or was don't know if it's still there) a version in
experimental. If there isn't will you debianise it? I've always wanted
to try it out.

xpm.h is in the package xpm4.7-dev from section x11 (Hmm why not devel?)

Install the debian xpm#.#-dev package. dpkg will put it where it should
go. Cheers.

You probably need the xpm4.7-dev package. Most runtime libraries will have
a -dev package that contains the headers necessary for compilation.
