Selection Shading Failures in Dark Themes
Using Thunderbird on completely updated testing/Sid system using only the main repository (so no non-free firmware) I'm seeing an unusual issue in the left pane of the mail client (where the folders are listed). When the client is first started its appearance is normal, with whichever folder has been selected highlighted in blue. The moment another pane (like the message window) or the window of another application receives focus, the blue highlight in the folder window is lost. I think this part may be normal behavior. But when focus is returned to the folder list, the blue color does not return to the selected folder. This does not occur with any of the light themes. On my system the behavior happens in the Adwaita-Dark, Arc-Dark, Blackbird, and Greybird-Dark themes under Xfce. The video controller on this system: Intel Corporation CoffeeLake-U GT3e [Iris Plus Graphics 655] (rev 01) The same selection color issue is seen with variations of this behavior on two other systems with other Intel Corporation graphics subsystems. All of the dark themes except for Adwaita-Dark also present fields being edited in GnuCash as black on very dark gray, making them just about impossible to use with that application, but I think this is probably unrelated to the other issue. I can't file a bug report because I have no idea whether this is a: 1. driver problem 2. theme problem 3. problem with specific applications If I can find a way to resolve it, I'll be grateful. The dark themes are very much easier on my particular set of eyes. BTW, I have tried various other dark themes (all of the themes available in Debian's main repo, I think) to no avail. I'd appreciate suggestions. I may not be quick to respond, but I'll do my best to get back in a timely manner. Thanks, JP

System appearance , Themes, Colors, Styles. etc.
Hi all Debian Stretch amd64 Up until recently, I had a login screen that I liked, a desktop theme that worked reasonably well (with some contrast problems) and desktop background that I liked. Then I killed my system and had to reinstall the OS and load in backup copies. The system has been a bit of a mess since. I only have 2 choices or login screen, neither of which I like. I did manage to find and download a copy of my old desktop background but none of my workspace themes work well. The tend to be dark gray backgrounds -which I like- but do strange things with the print. I tried to send an email to my doctor the other day and my HMO web site was printing all of my typing in white on white. My bank web site prints gray on gray. I have tried various preference setting on Firefox to no avail. My address book prints dark blue on dark gray. Impossible to read. Many of the system settings don't seem to change much other than making scroll bars impossible to see. I have tried to download various themes but have found nothing that works. Switching different color schemes makes big changes in the system setting page but doesn't change other applications. In brief, I lost most of my splash screens and can't find my favorites anymore and the various color schemes don't effect my applications appearance. Any suggestions? Gary R.

The little maintenance of IceWM has one advantage though: I keep my 4 old configuration files and copy them into the updated Debian directory (/etc/X11/icewm). Ran deborphan. Made sure that every thing related gtk too is purged. Removed all references in sources.list to experimental / unstable. Installed GNOME again. ( have a small vision problem, and always take the mouse to that spot and bring it back to where I want it). It also depends on nvidia's drivers which are in non-free, and I need to spend tiem building the nvidia modules. Re: Idea for weekly/monthy wallpaper/themes package
I like the idea of daily/weekly/monthly wallpaper. I'd love if it would be a debian package that would ask about resolution, how often to update, tags(light/dark, linux/debian/tux/whatever), to keep archieve or not, other issues like dual-monitor etc during configuring. After this package should add cron job to download specific wallpaper and replace /usr/share/weekly-wallpaper.png with new one. So to change their settings users just need to run dpkg-reconfigure weekly-wallpaper-pkg. And there is no need to run apt-get update every time you want a new wallpaper. That's a good point; if a user doesn't run a system upgrade for a while, he won't get any new wallpaper. On the other hand, users *should* regularly check for and install upgrades for security, etc. Maybe getting tired of the old wallpaper would help remind them to do so. :) Or maybe they would get used to the wallpaper, or just decide they really like it, and not run an upgrade. I'm not completely convinced that the package needs to resize the wallpaper itself; both KDE and GNOME can size down images larger than the screen resolution, and they do a good job. Another possibility is to have a repository of selected wallpapers, and a scheduled script to choose one at random, using tags/ categories. A possible extension of that idea is to let the user browse through and choose the exact one he wants, but that's easy enough already: Konqueror, for one, can quickly set any image as the desktop wallpaper. Maybe a better idea would be a script--maybe with a GUI frontend--to choose random wallpapers from KDE-Look and GNOME-Look; it would make sure the image is large enough to fit the screen, and it could choose based upon rating, number of downloads, keywords, etc. It could also use Flickr as a source. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Idea for weekly/monthy wallpaper/themes package
Thanks for the replies, everyone. We seem to have two basic ideas: 1. A Debian package, updatable with apt. 2. A GUI app that would manage all the different things and ways to be updated. The reason for the whole idea, IMO, is to make the process of refreshing your wallpaper automatic. Over the years I've downloaded a bunch of calendar-photo-type wallpapers, with a few non-photo, art- style ones mixed in. Every so often I open up that directory and choose a new one, and even less often I go to KDE-Look or Flickr, etc. and download new ones. Sometimes I may go months with the same wallpaper, while other times I might update it every few weeks. I know that, for Windows users, there are things like WebShots that will do it for you (though poorly, IMO; they tend to use low-res images and add ugly text). Well, back to the ideas, I like the idea of a Debian package, because it would make the process for the user very simple: just set your wallpaper to /usr/share/wallpapers/unique-name-for-the-autoupdate- wallpaper.png, and after a normal system upgrade, you'll have a new wallpaper automatically. Different packages could be chosen for different themes, etc. KDE and GNOME can handle sizing down large images for smaller screens, and a separate package would probably be best for multi-monitor setups. A GUI app is not a bad idea; it could present a more complex interface where the user could browse by tags, choose how often to update, etc, but it would be far more complex to make and maintain. Not a bad project for PyKDE maybe (I am partial to KDE), but still much more effort than a Debian package. Any more thoughts? Maybe I should put this idea on w.d.o. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A strange problem with iceweasel gnome themes
After the final update to etch as stable I noticed the following behavior: whenever I try to save a file, print a file with iceweasel (anything that tries to bring up the file dialog), the browser crashes. After some trial and error and use of strace, it appears to be correlated with opening icon directories. Iceweasel will only work for me with the default gnome theme, not any of the extra themes. This only happens on one installation (on a T41p laptop runing a custom 2.6.19 kernel with standard xorg radeon not firegl). My desktop also running etch has no problems with themes so I tried reinstalling all of the theme packages, iceweasel, tried it with and without plugins, checked permissions on the /usr/share/icons dirs (ok). It tried removing and/or updating icon cache. Still the same. I tried the same experiment as a fresh user, changing nothing about the default configuration but the theme: same behavior. Any ideas??? P.S. I'm happy to use the default theme, but I'd like to know what is going on here. TIA! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Well, thanks, but I'm not sure what the point of Yet Another Mailing List is when we already have debian-user, which is also available as list archives and newsgroups at several other sites. I have enough trouble just keeping up with this list. I already have disk space and bandwidth for hosting, I just wondered if anyone thought it was a good idea. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Idea for weekly/monthy wallpaper/themes package
Hi list/group, (I seem to be in a slashy mood...) I've had an idea for a while to make a package of wallpaper and/or other theme elements and put it in a repository, updated weekly or monthly--maybe one package for each--so people could install the package, set their wallpaper to /usr/share/wallpapers/the-monthly- wallpaper.png, and get automatically updated wallpaper every so often. Perhaps there could even be some debconf and virtual package magic to let the user decide to install the last X-months worth of wallpapers, or something like that...you get the idea. So my question is, would anyone be interested in something like that? Do you have any ideas for how to do it better, or what to include? Maybe different themes, like scenery, urban, art, Linux-related, water, sky, macro, etc. What do you think? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? new themes ...
Wow - did this theme have an animated 3D poochie or clippy? I wonder if there is a 'SETI' theme out there... It is also not unusual to find badly designed monitoring gizmos. For example, a panel meter that polls in a very tight loop - since humans take a long time to react (and probably aren't watching that panel all the time) I would never update a panel more than twice per second - and it's not easy to think of a tool that will require even this fast update. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I have the xfwm4-themes package installed but I only have 17 themes in the list (all of which suck :S). There are, however, plenty more themes installed. (see below) I'm running Debian etch. $ ls /usr/share/themes |wc -l 104

gnome 2.10.2 Sid Themes
Hi, I have Sid up to date with gnome, I can't get some themes to work with this. I installed one sucessfully but the resr seem to not show under gnome-themes-manager. I tried installing this one. http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=14876 AFAIK, the only needed thing to do is locate it under /home/abonilla/.themes/ (extracted) or even use the Install Theme under gnome-themes-manager. It even says it's installed, but I can't really see the theme listed? Thanks in advance! .Alejandro -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
