Firstly, if the window had ever been larger, the 5 tabs would have
shown at least once. They did not at any stage. The word "Configure"
would have been a beacon as I struggled to find configure options.

Secondly, this user did not know that a desktop menu item could be
resized. Until the possibility was raised on list, I considered them
inviolate.

Thirdly, I've had Debian 9.0.0 installed for 2 -3 days now, and with a
monitor nearly a yard wide, I have in that time only enlarged a couple
of uxterms, and set "huge" text size, to better enjoy the wireless
keyboard at range. There has not been any cause for contemplating making
any window smaller.

What we need to do is examine whether the Debian 9.0.0 distro-smith last
had it shrunken, and it is therefore in that condition in the distro.
If we knew what config file contains the menu gumpf, that could perhaps
be revealed, and minimise the need for speculation and supposition.

That's 1080P. 1920 is the horizontal resolution, the standard is named
for the vertical resolution. A monitor has a lot less work to do than
the rendering software which is producing the picture, and the video
card it runs on.

>
> > Define accelerated Ric. That 1920P @ 60 fps is nominally twice as

But that's the point of interlace, to refresh at twice the full picture
rate, with alternate sets of lines. 60Hz is around the minimum
necessary for flicker-free viewing, 50Hz is nearly good enough, and
30Hz interlaced gives you two half-pictures at 60Hz.

Interlace causes jitter on stationary pictures, but is best for showing
smooth movement for a given bandwidth, so computer systems generally
produce non-interlaced pictures, and broadcast TV is interlaced. A
computer system producing moving video should be working interlaced for
cleanest motion, but generally isn't because the static parts of the
screen display would show jitter.

Many modern TV receivers will interpolate the interlaced signal to give
'complete' pictures refreshing at 60Hz, and some even
standards-convert to higher refresh rates, though at the cost of some
motion artefacts.

Me neither. I've got all five. Ordinary display size here.

I've read that the HDMI output on the Udoo depends on the S/PDIF control and
installing pulseaudio mutes it. Maybe that has something to do with "The

This is your opinion.

Grub2 setup can be run without mounting the target filesystem?

If by "target filesystem" you mean the filesystem containing the boot
directory (/boot by default or specified by the --boot-directory option)
then no. But I fail to see how this ability would be an advantage. I
trust the OS filesystem driver more than GRUB installer when it comes to
writing files to a filesystem.

(boot anything that has Grub Legacy available in the path)

Do similarly simple Grub2 instructions exist?

GRUB 2 just has a single grub-install command.

I beg to differ. Once you are used to it, manually
maintaining grub.cfg is rather easy.

In your opinion. I find smaller files using volume labels easier to maintain
than larger ones with humanly immemorable UUIDs.

You can just use all that (labels and small files) with GRUB 2 too.

Because the upstream GRUB legacy does not support ext4,

Since when has there been any upstream Grub Legacy?

Since the beginning.

Upstream restarted from
scratch, a whole new set of requirements and bugs to go along with incompatible
menu and setup, a very different bootloader deserving of a very different name.

So what ? We all know they are very different.

not even
mentioning newer filesystems such as btrfs, or features such as LVM,
RAID (no, GRUB legacy has no full software RAID support).

Some people are satisfied to keep what works working

Until it doesn't work any more because something else changed and is not
supported any more by the old GRUB legacy.

Yes, I missed the "unless the disk is a pure data-only disk" part.
Sorry for the noise.

On my data-only disks I use a
sector editor if necessary to fill the first 446 bytes of its first sector with
nulls.

A "modern" MBR contains an optional 32-bit disk signature at offset 440.
Fdisk calls it "disk identifier" and recent enough kernels uses it to
create synthetic partition UUIDs (PARTUUID) for the partitions. Wiping
the first 446 bytes erases this signature.

If you see nvidia in the result - you're using proprietary driver.

I have no idea how to answer that, I'm afraid. If you can tell me what
commands I should try in order to get that information, I'll happily try them.

The system here (jessie, 64-bit) is completely up to date, so it should be
using the latest version of everything that is supported in jessie.

(It's on my to-do list to move to stretch, but given that the first system on
which I tried that produced a not-particularly-pleasant experience, with one
issue still unresolved, I'm waiting for a bit before upgrading my main desktop
system.)

KMS rootless X indeed puts the log in ~/.local/share/xorg. As it's
enabled by default for the nouveau driver since Squeeze, the "No such
file or directory" message indicates the OP is using the proprietary
driver, for which KMS must be enabled manually.

Actually just kidding.

How 'bout

grep -B2 'Module class: X.Org Video Driver' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

But then if the OP had been using the nouveau driver, he'd get a "No such
file or directory" message.

Rather than "suggested that" I should have written "suggested glx as search
string".

I don't often here fail to find a current /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I think what's
happening is the one in .local/share/ is getting copied to /var/log/ so that it
remains available in the location people historically expect, where Googling
will suggest to look, plus the typing is easier with no shifts required and
fewer characters to type.

> Actually just kidding.

> How 'bout

Is a mere mortal going to know, seeing the following, which driver is actually
in use?

# grep -B2 'Module class: X.Org Video Driver' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[22.731] (II) Module modesetting: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
..
[22.731] (II) Module fbdev: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
..
[22.731] (II) Module vesa: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

Someone using a file viewer (e.g. MC -> F3) rather than grep is going to spot a
large mass of similar *(0) lines faster than one short string in a file with 300
or more lines.

Another grepping option:

# grep Output /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[22.851] (II) modeset(0): Output VGA-0 has no monitor section
[22.864] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-0 has no monitor section
[22.864] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-1 has no monitor section
[22.879] (II) modeset(0): Output VGA-0 disconnected
[22.879] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-0 connected
[22.879] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-1 disconnected
[22.879] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-0 using initial mode 1920x1200

I took your advise and used apt-get only across 4 Debian editions.
It did not stop systemd from being installed all on its own.
I started with 7, pretty minimal sysV and runit, slim, openbox, midori,
2-3 lxde pieces to save time and hustle, tried to go to 8. Every step
systemd was installing I would take it off before I would restart. I couldn't
even get the kernel to install properly. I would restore the initial 7 and
tried to go to 9. Same ol, same ol. Testing I gave up and didn't even
try to go straight to sid :)
I thought maybe I can build a devuan. I would lose net-manager all the
time and with wifi it became the impossible task to achieve.
I don't remember how many times I had to remove firefox, deluge,
and some other commercial "free" software.
So much for the apt-get not installing shit on its own.
But if it was that easy it wouldn't have taken Devuan so long to get it
done.

There was a thread here, yesterday I think, explaining that a fresh EXT4
partition isn't completely formatted initially, and depends on the CPU finishing
the task in the background after mounting. I suppose that this process could be
slowing other things down until completed.

I know little about Internet in China, but have heard that the government

This is true, but also it is not easy when a new release frustrates.

Right. This is caching. It can be very helpful in limiting waste of bandwidth.
An uncached package can be slower coming from longer away through a slower pipe,
and may additionally be slowed by censorship and/or malware inspection.

(https://thinkpenguin.com/) e Purism (https://puri.sm).

Open a terminal, type
ip addr
hit ENTER
it will show you the device names. Normally, it starts with 1: lo . The
next one should be either eth1 or whatever name has replaced it now.

Good luck.

Can you use GParted? That works great. You can shrink a partition on a
drive that has enough space, and make a new one in the resulting empty
space. Format the new partition,
with a Linux file system. Then you can make a directory on the the new
partition and copy files by any of the normal means from your existing
partition to the new one. Best if you
have two drives, so put the new partition on the second drive, so now
you have a nice backup.

I like Stretch better, though not that much.

Next time, install another alongside, in multiboot, instead of
replacing. Then
if you don't like it, just don't use it. If you do, good, and the
old one can be
a rescue tool, and a place to install the next new version.

I have installed the nvidia-driver package.

At that point X did not start on boot, so I installed nvidia-xconfig and ran
it. It gave half a dozen errors, but on reboot X started and looks good.

How do I confirm that I am actually using the proprietary driver rather than
nouveau?

I am 99+% sure that the proprietary driver is being used, because the screen
looks quite different during the boot sequence, and slightly different once I
have a desktop. But I'd like to know how to confirm the fact.

Thanks to people for their helpful suggestions about installing the
proprietary driver (sorry it took so long to actually get it done: I had some
work in progress for a client, and didn't want to run a risk of ending up
without a working graphical desktop. That work ended yesterday, so this is the
first time it's felt safe to try the switch to the new driver.)

I've been having the same issue with Internet access (via dialup), but
the experience is across most of the entire [Net] for me. It's been
maybe a week or so that it has been very notable. It's been so bad a
few times that I've dipped into my reservoir of not so pretty words a
couple times along the way...

Ditto what Felix said about running both until you see if you like the
newest edition. I'm actually about to deliberately debootstrap Stretch
soon again just for practice. It will be my backup since I moved to
Buster during the newest release.

I consciously keep both because I always have it in mind that maybe
someone will have a problem with the previous release and maybe, just
maybe I'll be able to duplicate their issue to try to help out. I
actually was able to do that a couple months back where no one else
could duplicate a user's error, and my setup actually did throw the
user's same issue. *yay* :)

You can configure your network interface with ip or ifconfig commands or
you can use network manager. I know that network manager has GUI

Installed Stretch, but no command line

Just finished installing Stretch, using a RAID1, LVM and encryotion
for home (passkey) and . It is ant the moment a basic installation
with X-server-Xorg, but no DE yet. As part of the boot it accepts my
/home password, but I do not get the command line. I end up with a
blue-grey screen. No input from mouse or keyboard is accepted. To
close the computer I have to use the power switch.

I can open it in recovery mode, and after I enter the root password I
can get the command line as root. But I don't know what to do next to
effect a rescue. From the root command line I can however close the
computer properly with "shutdown -h now".

I did notice when the computer was booting normally -- not in rescue
mode -- the following lines loop many times until the computer gives up:

Running /scripts/local-block
Failed to connect to lvmetad
Failed to find logical volume SOL1/swap_crypt

According to several posts on line, this behaviour is a nuisance but
not fatal. As some people suggested on line I tried to get rid of
this nuisance by changing in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf use_lvmetad=1 to =0,
but to no effect.

If I have to I can live with the nuisance, but I cannot live without
the command line.

Help please, anyone.

Hi dear Debian fellows

I have some Debian9 machines, which are joined to a W2K8 Windows AD.

I can succesfully login/auth to the domain, but it keeps crashing
somehow. I see quickly the login msg, but then its crashing me out.

There are no references in the logs.

As im a bit puzzled about whats state of the art of now, should i go for
debug winbind or use sssd?

winbind refresh tickets = yes
winbind trusted domains only = no
winbind use default domain = yes

Any clues?

Thank you.

Re: Hibernate in stretch

2017-07-22 Thread solitone
On my previous laptop with jessie hibernation didn't work. On my current
laptop with stretch hibernation doesn't work either.

During the several updates that interested stretch in the last few months, the
symptoms changed, and I don't remember exactly their evolution at the moment.
Currently, when the system resumes, after a few boot messages, everthing
stalls on a black screen. I don't even get the login screen.

1,5x? I thought 1x would be enough:

Pour la mise à niveau oui. Je commencerais par ça (et toujours la sainte

gardant le reste commenté. Puis j'ajouterais la ligne pour les backports

# backports

deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch main non-free

Why so? I get the 1920P ok, and thats nice with ageing, diabetic
eyesight. Its the fps that suffers in this case. Watching htop while
its running the machine for very long, and theres plenty of cpu to
spare. The slow fps is clearly the fault of the usb2 pinhole all the
data that is not gpio related, has to get thru before it gets to the
hdmi interface and the monitor.

hdparm pretty much detects that, here is a terabyte drive plugged into
the usb plugs:

pi@picncsheldon:~ $ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda3

/dev/sda3:
 Timing cached reads: 866 MB in 2.00 seconds = 433.15 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 78 MB in 3.01 seconds = 25.94 MB/sec

Note the nearly 20x slower reads when it has to go thru the usb2 sized
pinhole. The sd card fares even worse but throws an error:

pi@picncsheldon:~ $ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/mmcblk0p1

/dev/mmcblk0p1:
Timing cached reads: BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not permitted
824 MB in 2.00 seconds = 411.42 MB/sec
BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not permitted
 Timing buffered disk reads: 40 MB in 1.92 seconds = 20.87 MB/sec
BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not permitted

I want to see those results from a rock64.. I'll expect something more
like this:
root@coyote:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
 Timing cached reads: 3330 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1664.90 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 534 MB in 3.01 seconds = 177.48 MB/sec

About 8.5x faster.

I put the swap on the r-pi out to a hard drive, so the sd card might last
a little longer. But it made no difference in apt's speed doing major
updates since both paths have to go thru that usb2 pinhole. The rock64
claims to eliminate that, so I'll be most carefully watching their forum
in the weeks after it ships.

It seems to remember what size it was last started with. So if a user
decides to make it small and hide stuff, it will remember the user's
wishes.

Now, the problem is that users don't know what they want, act
irrational, will never remember what they did earlier (how often does
one hear "I did nothing, but everything broke"?) and blame everything on
the software developer. Not to forget some even come up with conspiracy
theories how Microsoft paid people to make the application window
smaller ;-)

Aha, if the "PulseAudio Volume Control" window is manually widened, the
suppressed tabs become visible. Is it then the Debian 9.0.0 distro-smiths
who have set too small a window size in their LXDE menu item invocation?

It is cruel that so small an error causes such a reduction in usability.

Calling all LXDE Debian 9.0.0 "PulseAudio Volume Control" users for
theory validation.

Of course, we assume you didn't "manually" fiddle with the geometry of
the window during some previous invocation, which fiddling it
inconveniently remembered to your profound and vocal dismay.

I mean, we're talking pristine window here, geometrically speaking,
right?

Effectivement!

http://example.com/fais-moi-confiance.sh | sudo bash - »...

Amicalement,
