Bug#524151: xserver-xorg-video-intel: man page entry for AccelMethod broken
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.3.2-2+lenny4 Severity: normal The AccelMethod documentation in the manpage is badly formated and misses the UXA method: Option Legacy3D boolean Enable support for the non-GEM mode of the 3D driver on i830 and newer. This will allocate a large static area for older Mesa to use for its texture pool. On systems with a working GEM envi‐ ronment, this can be disabled to increase the memory pool avail‐ able to other graphics tasks. Default for i830 and newer: Enabled. Default for i810: this option is not used. Option AccelMethod string Choose acceleration architecture, either XAA or EXA. XAA is the old XFree86 based acceleration architecture. EXA is a newer and simpler acceleration architec‐ ture designed to better accelerate the X Render extension. Default: EXA. There are missing line breaks before 'Option AccelMethod' and 'Choose acceleration architecture'. Furthermode, it doesn't mention the UXA method, which should be supported since version 2.6. -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/x11/X.roster: xserver-xorg /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum does not exist. Bug#515214: I don't think we need to add complexity to X on Debian
On Mon Apr 13 10:41, Robert Grimm wrote: On Sun, 12 April 2009, you wrote: Please do not accept any of the patches. Most users want things to just work. Anyone who wants to keep their systems hal-free is capable of configuring xorg accordingly and should be able to make a filler package using equivs to fulfill the dependency with no need to increase the complexity for the majority. In my opinion, HAL is unneeded complexity. Furthermore, the referenced most users are perfectly capable to install recommends. This is the default behavior in Debian. If they like to install every piece of software, that makes their life easier, why wouldn't they install recommends? Concur. We _have_ a perfectly good system for saying please install this unless you know what you are doing; it's 'recommends'. It doesn't force people to hack around the issue (and equivs _is_ hacking around the issue), but it does get installed by default unless people know what they are doing. Not only that, but you also have a metapackage, which is what people generally install by default. Add a hard depends to that by all means, but you don't need to _require_ it. I'm not even likely to want to install it without hal myself, but I see no reason whatsoever not to allow people a hal-less X if they want. Bug#523589: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: dualhead broke with upgrade
2009/4/14 Alex Deucher alexdeuc...@gmail.com: Both heads are probably using the same crtc, but xrandr isn't smart enough to assign a different one. You can see what crtc is in use by running xrandr --verbose. You can assign a different crtc to the other head like so: xrandr --output DVI-1 --crtc 1 --mode 1280x1024 --left-of DVI-0 Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve my problem. Here are the results of some tests obtained using the following minimal xorg.conf file: Section Screen Identifier screen SubSection Display Depth 24 Virtual 2600 1024 EndSubSection EndSection The output of xrandr --verbose at each step is given in the attached file. 1/ startx (window manager e16) results in monitors in clone mode as expected. DVI-0 and DVI-1 do indeed use the same crtc (0). 2/ xrandr --output DVI-0 --crtc 0 --mode 1280x1024 nothing happens (as expected) 3/ xrandr --output DVI-1 --crtc 1 --mode 1280x1024 The monitor connected to DVI-0 enter power save mode. 4/ xrandr --output DVI-0 --off nothing happens except that the following command wouldn't change anything without it. 5/ xrandr --output DVI-0 --crtc 0 --mode 1280x1024 DVI-0 monitor goes on, DVI-1 monitor goes into power save mode Another funny issue is that after running startx and without playing with xrandr, if I switch off the monitor connected to DVI-1 then the mouse pointer doesn't move on the other monitor. This problem doesn't exist when the monitor connected to DVI-1 is on and the other one off. log.radeon Description: Binary data

Bug#524185: xserver-xorg - No keyboard/mouse after upgrade
Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 2:1.4.2-11 Severity: grave After the upgrade to xorg 1.4, the x server wants to use hal to detect input devices regardless of the old config. This leads to unusable systems because there is no way out of an x server which does not find any keyboard. And the reasons for this seems to be not uncommon. Nothing about that and the environmental requirements of this changes are documented at the usual location (NEWS.Debian). On my old notebook it just writes log messages that it wants to disable all kdb and mouse device entries and starts without input devices. After the upgrade to xorg 1.4, the x server wants to use hal to detect input devices regardless of the old config. This leads to unusable systems because there is no way out of an x server which does not find any keyboard. And the reasons for this seems to be not uncommon. Nothing about that and the environmental requirements of this changes are documented at the usual location (NEWS.Debian). On my old notebook it just writes log messages that it wants to disable all kdb and mouse device entries and starts without input devices. please send 1) full X config 2) full X log 3) output of lshal 4) contents of /proc/bus/input/devices thanks, Julien -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#513904: Info received (xserver-xorg-video-nv: X server hang in NVSync()
For me, this problem turned out to be defective hardware: after the card was exchanged for an identical card, the hangs no longer occurred. I know this may not help the original reporter of the bug. I also suggest that, as this appears to be a frequently reported issue, it would be better for nvSync() to log errors after a while and attempt to continue, if at all possible, instead of entering an infinite loop. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#524185: xserver-xorg - No keyboard/mouse after upgrade
severity 524185 important thanks On Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 01:37:48PM +0200, Julien Cristau wrote: please send 1) full X config 2) full X log 3) output of lshal 4) contents of /proc/bus/input/devices I'm not longer able to reproduce the problem after a reboot. Also the old log is gone because of my tests. Part of the problem was a missinterpretation of the output; earlier versions provided some optical feedback like a moving cursor and the ability to zap the xserver, both things are gone with this version by default. So the documentation problem remains. From my point of view it will not longer be able to get any input devices on a kernel without event devices in the default config. Bug#471738: compiz-core: Latest version resolves issue... please close this bug
Package: compiz-core Severity: normal I have installed the latest version, and '/usr/bin/compiz' seems to work fine under Xfce without having to make manual changes to the script. Nice job! The only issue I face now is #513639, the permissions problem with '/var/log/Xorg.0.log'. Once that issue is resolved, I may switch to 'compiz' as my permanent window manager. libdrm override disparity
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the override file for the following file(s): libdrm2-dbg_2.4.9-1_i386.deb: package says section is libdevel, override says debug. Please note that a list of new sections were recently added to the archive: cli-mono, database, debug, fonts, gnu-r, gnustep, haskell, httpd, java, kernel, lisp, localization, ocaml, php, ruby, vcs, video, xfce, zope. At this time a script was used to reclassify packages into these sections. If this is the case, please only reply to this email if the new section is inappropriate, otherwise please update your package at the next upload. Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why. Please INCLUDE the list of packages as seen above, or we won't be able to deal with your mail due to missing information. Bug#523724: Further information as requested
In reply to your questions: 1. I did not change the kernel or anything else that seems relevant. 2. I don't know why direct rendering is shown as disabled in the log file. glxinfo says it is enabled with both versions of xorg. 3. /proc/mtrr is different with the two versions. With the older (working) version I get: reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back reg01: base=0x03ff0 ( 1023MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable reg02: base=0x0d800 ( 3456MB), size= 128MB, count=1: write-combining With the newer one I get only: reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back reg01: base=0x03ff0 ( 1023MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable 4. Bug#523589: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: dualhead broke with upgrade
On 4/15/09, di dit didi...@gmail.com wrote: 2009/4/14 Alex Deucher alexdeuc...@gmail.com: Both heads are probably using the same crtc, but xrandr isn't smart enough to assign a different one. Sounds like: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21199 Does: xset dpms force off followed by moving the mouse cause both screens to come on? How will this bug be fixed ? X is only supposed to move to a setup without config by default. If you need to customize it, as by enabling tapping, editing xorg.conf is a perfectly acceptable way to do it. If there wasn't supposed to be support for xorg.conf, we would have ripped out the code to handle it a long time ago. I really can't understand how someone can suggest to fake packages using equivs instead of using the Recommends: header as it's thought. The Policy says in 7.2 very clearly in all but unusual installations, so nobody can't use users who just want it work as argument. Debian's default is btw. to install recommended packages anyway. Another reason why users who just want it work are _no_ argument against using Recommends: header. Thank you so much for repeating exactly what other people have said. Given that the XSF must be collectively illterate, we didn't understand them the first dozen or so emails stating this, so the above was clearly necessary. X.org not only runs on fat workstations but also on embedded device where you as less abstraction layers and diskspace used as possible. Debian always claims to be the _universal_ operating system and it should also package X.org to be universal. Debian is not (a desktop focussed) Ubuntu. Note that this is the direction that upstream is heading in. The design is conceptually quite simple. The X server asks the system, in this case via hal, to enumerate input devices are present and gets them enumerated back. It then utilizes that hardware via the kernel rather than driving them itself with its own drivers. Note that this system was designed and implemented by a Nokia employee for an embedded system. It brings an enormous simplification to the overall operating system by putting things like keymaps in one place, and only having the kernel driving the hardware rather than both the kernel and the X server. It also makes it flexible with system changes, allowing hotplugging. Most importantly to Debian and the XSF, it means that we don't have to carry around a gigantic horrible bunch of shell script just to configure the system. All of this is a good thing. If you object to having the X server depend on external software, you're going to have to learn to like it, because the goal has been to decrease the amount of OS code that the server needs to duplicate in order to do its job. It no longer scans the PCI bus itself, but instead relies on libpciaccess to query the OS. It no longer carries its own build system, but relies on autotools. All of the video drivers are moving significant portions of themselves in to the kernel as well. If you can't deal with hal, then you'll have to write a replacement for it that allows the server to query the system in a transparent way, and also allows one to easily configure device-specific properties. This is something that hal currently does very well and the X server can not do otherwise. All of that said, it's very likely that we will downgrade the depends to recommends, just not right now. We have actual important bugs like totally broken installs that we want to deal with first. I herewith vote for demoting hal (#515214) and console-setup (#523960) to recommends. Bug#523960: equivs is surely not the solution to this problem. Recommends: is.
Hi David, On Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 03:09:22PM -0400, David Nusinow wrote: Axel Beckert wrote: I really can't understand how someone can suggest to fake packages using equivs instead of using the Recommends: header as it's thought. Given that the XSF must be collectively illterate, we didn't understand them the first dozen or so emails stating this, so the above was clearly necessary. You got me wrong. But you seem to have started counting those mails. That's good. :-) Note that this system was designed and implemented by a Nokia employee for an embedded system. That's an interesting detail! [...] This is something that hal currently does very well and the X server can not do otherwise. Thanks for this very detailed explanation. I'm sure many of those who are (currently) unhappy about HAL and the wontfix for #515214 now better understand the background of this obviously (still) unpopular decision. All of that said, it's very likely that we will downgrade the depends to recommends, Glad to hear that, anyway. I would suggest to remove the wontfix tag then. It would cool down the people -- as your statement already does for those caring to scroll down that far. Such an explanation instead of a _commentless_ wontfix tag would have been way better in the first place. just not right now. We have actual important bugs like totally broken installs that we want to deal with first. Sure. I herewith vote for demoting hal (#515214) and console-setup (#523960) to recommends. The BTS is not a voting system. Surely not, but it's a way to show maintainers that there's yet another user who is very unhappy about a specific solution respective that there is demand for another solution. And I obviously managed to do that. And happily I also managed to trigger a very informative explanation about the background to this decision which will surely reduce the amount of I dislike the wontfix, too mails as well as reducing the wearout of someone's capslock key. ;-) Thanks again for that informative reply, Axel -- Axel Beckert - a...@deuxchevaux.org, a...@noone.org - http://noone.org/abe/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#524257: xserver-xorg-video-intel: [G33/KMS] lockup whenever using Xv
Björn Heide wrote: Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.6.99.903-1 Severity: important X server locks up whenever I try to play a video (no matter if HD or not) using Xv. This is triggered by enabling KMS. Video playback using Xv with UXA and KMS *disabled* works fine. Also it is impossible to switch to a Console with Ctrl-Alt-F1, even after killing the X-Server with Alt-SysRq-K. Only thing wich still works is I can move the mouse pointer around. Did you try upgrading your kernel to 2.6.30-rc* ? KMS is still work in progress (doesn't work at all here) so upgrading the kernel may help... If it doesn't help, you might want to talk directly with the upstream intel devs about this, since the code evolves faster than we even understand your bug reports on the Debian BTS :) Brice -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#524287: xserver-xorg-video-intel: segfault on server exit in i965_prepare_composite()
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.6.3-1 Severity: normal Hi, X crashes when exiting KDE 4.2.2 from unstable running under kdm. After some trickery I managed to catch a backtrace. Architecture is amd64. I'm actually not 100% certain this is an X bug; under a different kernel setup (the same 2.6.29.1 kernel, but compiled for SMP) I have also managed to trigger kernel crashes doing the same thing. That bug has been reported at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13039 However my theory is that in that case too after a real X crash some failure path in the kernel does not work correctly, so it might be an X bug (too). #0 0x0021 in ?? xserver-xorg-video-intel override disparity
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the override file for the following file(s): xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg_2.7.0-1_i386.deb: package says section is x11, override says debug. [NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in due course, but until then the installer will send these automated mails; sorry.] -- Debian distribution maintenance software (This message was generated automatically; if you believe that there is a problem with it please contact the archive administrators by mailing ftpmas...@debian.org) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
