FWIW I can cobnfirm that xwayland builds successfully if libtirpc-dev is
installed.

Bug#947364: libgl-dev: Missing dependency on libx11-dev

2019-12-25 Thread Andreas Metzler
Package: libgl-dev

Hello,

libgl-dev seems to lack a dependency on libx11-dev. Rebuilding e.g.
3depict results in the following error:

/usr/include/GL/glx.h:30:10: fatal error: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory

I am not very familiar with meson but afaict from reading the docs
https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/blob/master/docs/markdown/Pkgconfig-module.md
this behavior cannot be overriden. - Setting requires_private to ''
does not work since the autodeps are appended.

So it looks like the possibilties of fixing this are
1. Use a kludge (sed in debian/rules)
2. Add package dependencies
3. Stop using pkg.generate().

Hello,

reassiging, there seems to be a missig/incorrect dependency. Manually
installing libpam-systemd:i386 lets X work again.

Bug#449228: xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg is uninstallable on sparc, should not be arch:any

2007-11-04 Thread Andreas Metzler
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg
Version: 2:2.1.1-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

The new version of xserver-xorg-video-intel cannot propagate to
testing since xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg is uninstallable on sparc.
The reason for that is easy to see:

-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.1.1$ grep -E '^Arch|^Pack'
debian/control | head -n4
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel

kfreebsd-i386 m68k mips mipsel netbsd-i386 powerpc
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg
Architecture: any
-

This tells the autobuilders on sparc to build and upload
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg but not xserver-xorg-video-intel,
therefore automatically generating an uninstallable package.

Please copy the Architecture line for xserver-xorg-video-intel to
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg and submit a bugreport against
ftp.debian.rg to remove the existing sparc binary of
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg.

The key AE12 (between scharfes s and backspace on a german

as single-quote.

This is also inconsistent with linux-console (de-latin1-nodeadkeys.kmap.gz)

Is this dummy still needed after resolving these 2 occurrences?

Isn't this package mainly needed/useful for sarge-etch upgrades?

Bug#365837: xserver-xorg: Debconf questions use cryptic Accept/Decline when refering to user interface items

The bug concerns the following. When upgrading, I got questions like
 this one:

Decline it if you want to keep your current layout.

  Autodetect keyboard layout?

  Yes No

The text uses a cryptic way to, I guess, refer to the buttons at the bottom
(Accept refers to Yes and Decline to No?). It could be that this is
instantly obvious to native English speakers, but it's not to me. After
reading it again I arrived at the conclusion that this must be a
description of the buttons, but reading it again should not be
 necessary.

I suggest to be as concrete as possible when directing users what to
do, and refer to the present user interface items directly. This helps
both people who are not intimately involved with the used language, and
 less expert users.

My suggestion is therefore to use Select Yes if you want the keyboard
layout to be redetected. Select No if you want to keep your current
 layout..

This also applies to some other questions.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Stuff like this is done on purpose, quoting developer's reference

Re: HELP!! Re: Bug#365126: wmrack - FTBFS: error: WMRack needs X Windows!!!

2006-04-29 Thread Andreas Metzler
In article [EMAIL PROTECTED] (gmane.linux.debian.devel.x) you wrote:
Hi, I need some help or suggestions or something. My package WMRack
builds fine here--but I haven't yet upgraded to the new modular X.
It fails to build on Debian's autobuilders though, and I'm darned if I
have any idea why. I am the sole upstream maintainer of this package
as well as the Debian maintainer. Nothing has changed in the package
 that should affect this.

The build-dependencies (which worked before) are: libx11-dev,
 libxext-dev, libxpm-dev, xutils, debhelper (= 4.0.0) and the
autoconf stanza (from configure.in) is, simply:

 dnl check for X11
 dnl
 AC_PATH_X
[...]

Hello,
AC_PATH_X searches[1] for [Xt],[X11/Intrinsic.h],[XtMalloc (0)] by
default, so this shouldn't have worked[2], as you do not build-depend on
libxt-dev. Try purging libxt-dev and rebuild after
dpkg-source -x.

At least previously (pre-modular) there were three ways to fix this
kind of bug, I guess all of them should continue to work.

1) --x-includes=/usr/include --x-libraries=/usr/lib
2) (uselessly) build-depend on libxt-dev
3) invoke AC_PATH_X with arguments to search for a
library/header/function you need anyway, instead of the default
 [Xt],[X11/Intrinsic.h],[XtMalloc (0)], e.g.:
 -AC_PATH_X
 +AC_PATH_X([X11],[Xlib.h],[XInitExtension()])

1 will break backports to non-modular, 3 is the cleanest (--
upstream) but will bloat the diff due to the need to regenerate the
complete auto-foo, so I would go for 2 in the Debian package.

cu andreas

[1] unless this has changed in modular, but I do not think so.
[2] according to the build-logs it has, though. ;-)

I know now why it has worked previously: You are build-depending on
xutils, which used to contain xmkmf. - The autoconf test uses xmkmf if
available and only checks for libXt if xmkmf is not available. In
modular xmkmf lives in xutils-dev. So I guess you should simply build
depend on libxt-dev instead of xutils. This way your package will be
buildable on sarge and sid.

[...]
[1] unless this has changed in modular, but I do not think so.

Hello,
Obviously this has nothing to do with modular, as the test is not part
of X but of autoconf. Debian's autoconf 2.59a-4 contains a changed
test that searches for X11/Xlib.h and XrmInitialize (See bug #327655),
but this will only make a change to *your* package if you rebuild
configure from configure.ac (or .in) using the new autoconf package.
This would bloat the diff and require some touch magic in
debian/rules.

The xorg metapackage currently depends on xterm. Could the dependency
on xterm please be replaced by a dependency on xterm |
x-terminal-emulator? This would give users the convenience of
installing X.Org via the xorg package without needing to install
xterm but a terminal emulator of their choice,
 e.g. rxvt-unicode.

Previously, x-window-system-core provided this functionality, which
 is now provided by xorg.

Hello,
As the former x-window-system-core and xorg are identical (except for
the additional xterm dependency, which imho really should allow
alternatives) and as the name x-window-system-core is generic (it is
not named xfree86) I wonder whether the xorg package should not
simply be dropped in favour of x-window-system-core.

There are currently no reverse depencies on xorg (except
x-window-system-*) in Debian so it *still* could be done without pain.

This won't work for two reasons:

- sarge has no x11-common package, so on upgrading from sarge to etch
$2 in x11-common's preinst is empty.

- The version check is too strict, we alreay have a security update in
  sarge (4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1).

I do not see a nice solution currently, fixing #1 by putting the magic
in xfree86-common's mmaintainerscripts and making x11-common depend
on xfree86-common (=6.8.0) seems to be hideously ugly.

How about simply removing the files on *fresh* installations of
x11-common? ( [ $2 = ], iirc)

That would just be a workaround, it would be better to fix the configure

Ah, so libxt-dev is not needed for this ?

Indeed.

Quoting from a similar bugreport:
| There are multiple possibilities for fixing this:
| 1) --x-includes=/usr/X11R6/include --x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib
| 2) (uselessly) build-depend on libxt-dev
| 3) invoke AC_PATH_X with arguments to search for a
| library/header/function you need anyway, instead of the default
| [Xt],[X11/Intrinsic.h],[XtMalloc (0)], e.g.:
| -AC_PATH_X
| +AC_PATH_X([X11],[Xlib.h],[XInitExtension()])

I have not checked libxrender's source code for a correct function to
search for, instead of XtMalloc.

xlibs contains more than 300 dpkg-conffiles, and moving them from one
package to another requires lots of manual md5summing in the
package maintainer scripts as dpkg does not handle this at all and

That is same problem anybody switching from xfree96 to xorg
experiences with /etc/Xsession, just on a gigantic scale.

Check out the xlibs and xkeyboard-config packages from Ubuntu for how
 this has been done.

Hello,
thanks for the pointer, this basically works as I thought it would,
comparing every no-longer-shipped conffile with the known md5sum of
the previous release nd removing it, if this is the case.

BTW is thee a reason why you do not use remove_conffile* as their
describig comments suggest:

remove_conffile_prepare () {
  # Check a conffile filename against a list of canonical MD5 checksums.
  # If the file's current MD5 checksum matches one of the official_md5sum
  # operands provided, then prepare the conffile for removal from the system.
  # We defer actual deletion until the package is configured so that we can
  # roll this operation back if package installation fails.

but instead invoke both _prepare and _commit in xlibs' preinst?

that would have gone in to experimental.

After talking with a number of people, I've decided that we should

Hello,
The big downside of uploading directly to unstable is that you as
package maintainers have got little influence when the package
*actually* hits unstable, as it has to go through NEW-processing.

This is just a general observation, I've no idea whether X would have
problems with that (perhaps you are going to be prioritized anyway).

It just occurred to me where I had seen this type of black screen problem
before. It happens when using the vesa driver with an 845G. We work
around this in the i810 driver by remembering the initial video mode
and simply re-initialising it when exiting/VT switching instead of using
the VBE save/restore mechanism. This workaround is only actived for
845G hardware.

2004-06-30 Thread Andreas Metzler
Package: xlibs

Severity: important

Hello,
I've just made a fresh sarge installation (without tasksel) and ended up
without xkbd data because xlibs is not depended on by any package
(including x-window-system-core). This results in a rather broken
keyboard if you are not using a generic 101-key US-keyboard, e.g. me
with de-keyborad was unable to enter | or @ because almost all modifiers
do not work.

A couple of thoughts:
* Imho xserver-xfree86 should depend on xkbd-data.
* Why do I need to install libraries that I do not want to install like
  libxft1 when I just want a working keyboard? I.e. isn't it a quite bad
idea to put real, unrelated data in the meta package xlibs?

I am submitting this against xlibs because that is where the xbd bugs
currently end up, instead of against the source package xfree86.

 * Should we go our own way starting from the sanitized XFree86 CVS
  snapshot we've prepared?

Do you think this is sustainable? Currently the status s quite good, as
many drivers have been backported, but I doubt this can continue
eternally.

 * Should we ensure that multiple implementations of the X Window System
are packaged, or standardize on just one?

I cannot think of why it would be useful to have e.g. libx11.so from
both xorg and http://freedesktop.org/Software/xlibs in Debian. - Apart
from the fact that they are the same code the interfaces are
standardized.

Afaict the X-strike force _cannot_ ensure that only a single
implementation is packaged, they can only choose the package only a
single implementation themselves.

 * If we standardize on just one, which one should it be?

This seems to be a cross-package issue, but I think this is the best
place to raise it. I know I could play with config files and solve the
problem for my pc, but that would not be useful to other users.

I need a system meeting three conditions:

 - use English localization for messages, numerics, date conversions and
so on. (this suggests C or en_US)

No ...

 - use a charset including the Euro symbol. (this suggests ISO-8859-15 or
   UTF-8)

 - have 8 bit long characters. (this rules out UTF-8)

... this suggest using leaving LANG unset and only setting LC_CTYPE to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (No idea whether this is supported by xlibs.) The whole
point of the different LC-variables is that you can selectively set
them.

BTW, don't you use A4 in Italy?

When I 'dpkg-reconfigure locales', my best choice is to generate
en_US.ISO-8859-15 (also listed in /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED), and set LANG
 (or LC_ALL) accordingly.

How about [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[...]
Now, what about trying to keep xlibs-data's information in sync with
locales' information? Maybe it suffices to have the postinst script for
xlibs-data _merge_ entries from /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED (if present)
 into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias, after remapping ISO-8859-x
 to ISO8859-x.

This indeed would be nice.

Yes.

2 - Some are arguing that the new licensing is NOT GPL incompatible, but
nobody argues that it is not deviating from DFSG

I do not understand that. There is a consensus that the new license is GPL
incomatible. Whether it is DFSG free is not complety clear.

3 - Xorg forked XFree86 due to these licensing considerations

Yes.

 4 - Debian will NOT include XFree86 4.4 components

Yes.

 5 - Other Linux's distributions MIGTH include Xfree86 4.4

Afaik none of the major players (Suse, Redhat/Fedora, Gentoo, Mandrake,
Debian) will. (openBSD won't either.)

6 - Other Linux's distributions WILL include Xorg

It looks like Fedora will.

7 - Debian MIGHT include Xorg, MIGHT include XFree86 4.4 in non-free or
 similar

I doubt anybody will invest work to package XFree86 4.4 for Debian with
the current license, I would be very surprised if any of the members of
the current maintainer team would.

There is another alternative to XFree86 - the Xserver from
freedesktop.org. http://freedesktop.org/Software/xserver. Afaik it has
not yet been decided which of these Debian will choose but I think
there is tendency towards freedesktop.org. - It is saner from a
packager's POV, they have split X in components (server and libraries)
which could ease maintainance a lot.

I did, however, state that I felt that 4.3.0-1 was by far the superior
base to work from in sid, for a number of reasons (not least that
propagation to sarge would put the XSF in the position of having to
 maintain two codebases, not three).

Why do you presume to speak for the entire XSF here? Maintaining more
codebases is potentially *good*, not bad.

Hello,
Can you elaborate on that? Simple minded as I am I fail to see the
benefits of maintaining 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 at the same time (i.e.
tracking bug-reports, fixing serious ones possibly thrice) has, it just
looks like more work.

 A lot of users are interested in a backport of 4.3.0 to woody;
Dagfinn Ilmari Mannsåker volunteered to maintain it, but didn't have
time. Within the past week or so, Norbert Tretkowski and I spoke on
IRC, and he'd like to take up that responsibility.
[...]

I fail to see how a 4.3.0 backport is connected to keeping on
maintaining 4.2 for sid. - I actually wanted to snip this paragraph
but wanted to sidestep a see the part you did not quote answer. ;-)

For the sake of perhaps shortening the discussion I will insert a
description, as I understand it.

* prescriptive
a variable you set manually before starting to build to change the way
the build runs. A nice example is DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS.

* descriptive
The variable is not supposed to be set manually, instead they are set
by the rules, e.g. NOT_DOING_BLAH reflects the fact that the
build does not do BLAH, not the other way round, setting
NOT_DOING_BLAH by hand won't influence whether BLAH is executed.

Yes. The reason it is not in XFree86 is that the driver itself is
licensed under the GPL and not under the X11 license. To date, I
have been unsuccessful in contacting many of the original authors
to get them to relicense. Without the relicensing, the code will
have to be rewritten to be included into XFree86. Something I want
to avoid if at all possible.

Hello,
Branden, would you accept a patch[1] for Debian's packages of XFree86 to
include this driver? I can give it a shot.

[1] I have not tried to build it yet, but afaict it wouldn't be a
real patch but a aimple addition, the driver simply needs internal
X headers to build.

We had the same problem with debconfization of exim v4 but could not

cannot have sections two times in exim.conf. That's when I came up with
the scheme of saving the results of the debconf-questions to a simple
parseable variable=value file, and automatically generating the final
configuration-file in /var/lib/exim4 from this file and the
dpkg-conffile /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template with a simple script
update-exim4.conf(8). The template file is a normal exim.conf file
with additional magic-strings that are replaced by the update script
with the values from the debconf-results file.

| qualify_domain = DEBCONFvisiblenameDEBCONF
| acl_smtp_rcpt = acl_check_rcpt
| never_users = root

Of course the user can put a file without the magic-strings in
/etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template and it'll be used unmodified.

This is a variation of your original system with some added value:
- correct debconf support, the file that is managed with debconf is
simply parseable, so user modifications outside debconf are easy to
  preserve.
- /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template has dpkg conffile managment, user
  modifications are easy to preserve.
- everthing in /etc/ can be edited.

Of course this scheme is bound to fail if our little tomb-raider
friend starts editing /var/lib/exim4/exim4.conf directly but I hope
that he simply won't find it because it is hidden in a non-standard
location. And I am not sure if this might work X too, XF86Config has
a very complex structure.

printing it out in colour! I'm pretty sure that's all it is, anyway. Try
