during the chat, Mirek and I were wondering if Sifr is really the best
name for the new flat icon theme. Sifr is the Arabic word for
zero, which is meant to signify how reduced the theme is. However,
there already is a font embedding software for websites of the same
name.

Because the theme inherits icons from the Gnome Symbolic set, we
thought Symbolic (or maybe the Latin-transliterated Arabic
translation of the word) may be best.

What do you think?

Yes indeed.
One other minor thing would be to use the flat colored logo. Not important, but
I think it would make it look more consistent.

I think we are seeing the file differently as one of the ones you uploaded

As we are all in agreement, this version is the new v.4.0.x pamphlet
template (there were no objections on the list), once you have corrected
the background, I will post it on our marketing/design resources wiki
page so that international and nl marketing teams may start working on
official pamphlets. I will take care of moving the design to the
USLetter size.

Tim will be reporting back on his tests of the community pamphlets, the
ink-saving, ink bleed-through, and shadowing are what we are looking at,
as well, of course, the appeal of the design.

The first community pamphlet example that I suggested[1] has the
community logo with olive green but on the half-circle. Maybe this
would work?

I think we should either stick with two versions just like the official one or
use only the ink saver

Having said that I prefer that any version using the (gray) half circles has a
gray first panel because
I think the title page needs to stand out more than the rest.

It doesn't support Arabic, but I don't think other Latin alternatives would
support or look good even if they did.
Arabic will always need its own font.

Yes. Open Sans Condensed for the front page and Open Sans Condensed Light for

I thought the front page stood out less than the other pages, so I tried using
a dark background. Also I think we need to use the full logo on the front page
so I did that as well.

using our distinct motif.

I really don't like it. Especially since it breaks the branding guidelines for
the color (should be white on dark backgrounds) and the website adds the 4.0
(which shouldn't be part of the logo).

I would like to see some kind of branding element that ties all of these
together rather than having all disjointed materials that make us look
like we are not cooperating at all between groups.

So should we make everything look like the website or the program, well, splash
screen?

I've increased the font size without changing the button's height.

left-align the text and triangle actually?

Technically it's the same since you'll have to read at both directions, but I 
aligned it left now to not mess with the triangle since it's part of the brand 
;)

No, I've always used standard/LTR interfaces :)
In pretty much every other program current is on top and old is on bottom. Thus 
the logical precedence is current then old, hence current on the left and old 
on the right.
If you open 'Tools  Options  Colors  Edit' you will even see that it is 
currently implemented that way.

The OK button is still as confusing as an Apply button would be, as it 
still does nothing.
If you feel there absolutely must be a button, make it say Close

The OK button would hide the dialog as it does in any other dialog. 
Aesthetically I agree closing it by moving focus away without a button is 
better, but usability wise? I can't answer that.
Keep in mind that the custom colors popover won't be closed once you choose a 
color, unlike the normal color picker popover.

Sure. I just added the arrows to show that it's changeable.

The color selection is identical to that in MS Office. It's not a requirement, 
but it's good for compatibility purposes (e.g. if a user loads an MS Office 
document and wants to reuse one of the color variants), so I'd keep it the 
way it is.

Fair enough, although I personally think it's suboptimal (I'd say %90 of users 
wouldn't need that extra shade even in MS Office).

A vote isn't a reliable way to discover what's best for the user.
A usability study, perhaps based on Inkscape, which includes views for both 
sliders and a wheel,
would be much more accurate.
Perhaps we should invite Bjorn Balazs to help us with that?

As Kévin said the color map wouldn't replace the sliders, it would either 
replace the wheel or be added as an alternate option (it's already implemented).
Inviting Bjorn seems like a wise idea, and not just for this specific issue.

Thank you for the updates. Before I reply on your comments I like to propose an
idea similar to Mirek's for the palette tab:

Multiple palettes for the ability to choose colors digitally, without moving
any sliders or pointers. It helps users look at multiple colors at once and
choose between them.

I'm not 100% sure that we need it for the first implementation, though.

I'm not sur about that : You do not change your theme so often, The
popover is a fast access tool. More of that, seeing the M$ theme creator
window [2], this could take a lot of place. Not sure it's a good idea
having such a big popover;

While I definitely prefer a drop down menu, if we are going with the icon we
need to have a label next to it (theme options or something).

Issa The colors beneath the basic ones should be even to clear
confusion about the gap between the third and fourth rows (to show that
the third isn't the middle color).
I don't really understand what you means there. Should the separation
between the first line and derivates be bigger ?

What I meant is that the number of color aside from the first should be an even
number (2, 4, etc.) because the middle shade was already removed to the top.
Something like this (lower numbers represent brighter colors):

-Wouldn't it be better if we use a color map/square for the HSL instead
of the wheel since it's already implemented and prettier in my opinion?
Personally I prefer the wheel. Then I'm not sure what would be the good

in the palette tab ?
I think this shouldn't happen : the palette is there to present
majority of colors, the theme present colors that fit well together. The
default theme should be something else,that we will define. It have to
be pretty has lot of people (in M$ Office at least, since it's not
horrible) use the default one. But for me, the palette is fixed.

Fair enough. Maybe we can even use LibreOffice branding theme or Tango theme as
the default.

combine the green header with the modern elements from the current page.
And of course priority one should be to keep the page consistent.

Depends on what you mean by modern:
-If you mean using grays, stock photos and fancy screens then I disagree. I
don't think it suits the nature of our project.
-If you mean using the great tech behind the website (sliders, one page jump
navigation, @font-face, etc.) then I totally agree. My plan is to adapt that
using current LibreOffice look and merge it with the original website.

They are like that. One is a sheet, which is how the current icons look. The

While I'm trying to reuse everything I can, a lot of them had to be edited or
even drawn from scratch.

I don't think that would be a good choice, if we do so the icons won't be

Good point, I forgot to bring it up.
We need to choose a color for the icons, I suggest choosing either Tango
palette or LibreOffice [branding] palette:
Tango's dark grays: 2e3436, 555753.
LibO's dark grays: 66, 33.

Please note that this decision would most likely affect future colored flat
icons. On other hand the colors can be changed with one click at any time so we
don't have to worry about it for now :)

Or they'll look already better when implemented? Or is it better to discuss
this on the wiki?

If you have the LibreOffice source code you can find all the icons in
icon-themes. I am replacing them (on my machine) one by one to know what's done
and what's not.
A wiki page like that would be a huge effort and it wouldn't be so efficient.
We are currently using SparkleShare (Dropbox-like software) and we're looking
for a solution that would automatically fetch the icons for discussion. Check

of the completed icons every once in a while :)

Well I simply picked LibreOffice primary colors to tie it closer to the brand.
We could use the brighter variations.

When this step is done, we should discuss the symbols that we think
could be improved or we agree they have problems. (How do you think is
easier to track the discussions around each icon? Should we create a new
thread for any icon we want to analyze/debate? Or maybe is better to
work in wiki pages to see together the icons, their history and the
related comments?)

[libreoffice-design] Flat/Symbolic Icons Update

Hello world,

So on last Saturday's meeting we've decided to revive the flat icons by 
expanding on GNOME symbolic icon set to include LibreOffice icons. This would 
be way faster than starting from scratch and would help us gain a unified look 
on GNOME and a clean modern look on other platforms :)

Also you are underestimating the power of a fresh coat of paint, if done right
a simple redesign alone could sell the program :)

k-j this is an original/made-up airport, but I used Frankfurt Airport as a
