[libreoffice-design] RE: New name for Sifr theme?
Hello Astron, Symbolic is fine. Can't say I didn't expect this. Although to be fair Tango is also a video messaging app among other software ;) Regards, Issa Alkurtass From: Stefan Knorr [heinzless...@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, June 22, 2013 8:10 PM To: Issa Alkurtass; design@global.libreoffice.org Subject: New name for Sifr theme? Hi all, during the chat, Mirek and I were wondering if Sifr is really the best name for the new flat icon theme. Sifr is the Arabic word for zero, which is meant to signify how reduced the theme is. However, there already is a font embedding software for websites of the same name. Because the theme inherits icons from the Gnome Symbolic set, we thought Symbolic (or maybe the Latin-transliterated Arabic translation of the word) may be best. What do you think? Astron. Do you have a link as to where we could download the font? We will include it in the notes on the pamphlet template. It can be downloaded from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/arabeyes/files/kacst_fonts/ The first community pamphlet example that I suggested[1] has the community logo with olive green but on the half-circle. Maybe this would work? I think we should either stick with two versions just like the official one or use only the ink saver version for the community. RE: [libreoffice-design] Re: need branding approval[?] for the flier/brochure
Hello Marc, Marc Paré wrote on March 28, 2013 2:41 AM: So, to give the impression of cooperation of all these groups (website, docs, new-webdesigners, marketing/design), I would propose we adopt the same half-circle for our header on all panels with perhaps as the exception the 1st panel. We then need to discuss the font for the pamphlet, as well as the background colour for the panels (I say this as you seem to have included a grey-ish colour to the background). Therefore these are the elements that we would work/suggest: * designed header -- half-circle * 1st panel design * font * panel background color I added the background color to match that of the website's Discover page (as with the font and colors). I would add font color(s). How does this sound. This would give us an agreed-to template for the marketing team to work with. The marketing team could then fill the panels with the information they wish to add. Sounds good. The choice we would then have to make is that of font ... I am not sure but who has suggested this but is the website font Open Sans Condensed? Yes. Open Sans Condensed for the front page and Open Sans Condensed Light for the Discover page. I think it's good unless readability is an issue. How does this look as a template design for our marketing needs? I thought the front page stood out less than the other pages, so I tried using a dark background. Also I think we need to use the full logo on the front page so I did that as well. Once we have tweaked the design, the marketing team can get going on creating other pamphlets with more specific content for different uses (i.e. community growth, conference pamphlets, educational pamphlets etc.). We are in dire need of more marketing materials and the marketing team is eager to get going on this. If we are going with the half-circle then we should take the rest of the branding of the website. I've made a version of the brochure with the website's font and colors (requires Open Sans Condensed) https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Brochure-lo-4---A4-paper-size--v4--websitelike.odt Please note that I didn't update the design nor the spacings to match the change, so it's more than slightly messy. I actually like the half-circle design, it is distinct and easily identifies our newest version of LibreOffice4. Prior to this we were using our distinct motif. I really don't like it. Especially since it breaks the branding guidelines for the color (should be white on dark backgrounds) and the website adds the 4.0 (which shouldn't be part of the logo). I would like to see some kind of branding element that ties all of these together rather than having all disjointed materials that make us look like we are not cooperating at all between groups. So should we make everything look like the website or the program, well, splash screen? True, I focused too much on keeping it the same size as the latin characters and ignored readability. I've increased the font size without changing the button's height. Also, since Arabic is written right-to-left, would you have to left-align the text and triangle actually? Technically it's the same since you'll have to read at both directions, but I aligned it left now to not mess with the triangle since it's part of the brand ;) Regards, Issa Alkurtass Warning: This message and its attachment, if any, are confidential and may contain information protected by law. Hello Mirek, Kévin, Mirek M. wrote on March 24, 2013 12:47 PM: Perhaps this makes more sense for RTL cultures? New on the right makes more sense to me, not only because of the way my culture draws time, but also because it's more typical to have the constant part at the beginning and the variable part at the end. No, I've always used standard/LTR interfaces :) In pretty much every other program current is on top and old is on bottom. Thus the logical precedence is current then old, hence current on the left and old on the right. If you open 'Tools Options Colors Edit' you will even see that it is currently implemented that way. The OK button is still as confusing as an Apply button would be, as it still does nothing. If you feel there absolutely must be a button, make it say Close The OK button would hide the dialog as it does in any other dialog. Aesthetically I agree closing it by moving focus away without a button is better, but usability wise? I can't answer that. Keep in mind that the custom colors popover won't be closed once you choose a color, unlike the normal color picker popover. Mirek M. wrote on March 24, 2013 1:06 PM: If we allow custom palettes (which we definitely should if we have a palette view), then it'd be good to have a drop-down list of the palettes rather than a spatial view, or we could have both (a drop-down with left+right arrows at the side). Sure. I just added the arrows to show that it's changeable. The color selection is identical to that in MS Office. It's not a requirement, but it's good for compatibility purposes (e.g. if a user loads an MS Office document and wants to reuse one of the color variants), so I'd keep it the way it is. Fair enough, although I personally think it's suboptimal (I'd say %90 of users wouldn't need that extra shade even in MS Office). A vote isn't a reliable way to discover what's best for the user. A usability study, perhaps based on Inkscape, which includes views for both sliders and a wheel, would be much more accurate. Perhaps we should invite Bjorn Balazs to help us with that? As Kévin said the color map wouldn't replace the sliders, it would either replace the wheel or be added as an alternate option (it's already implemented). Inviting Bjorn seems like a wise idea, and not just for this specific issue. Kévin PEIGNOT wrote on March 24, 2013 2:51 PM: Gnome uses slightly rounded squares. Right, even if I don't like that. RE: [libreoffice-design] Color Picker : Tentative Design
Hello Kévin, all, Thank you for the updates. Before I reply on your comments I like to propose an idea similar to Mirek's for the palette tab: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:I_colorpicker_palettes.png Multiple palettes for the ability to choose colors digitally, without moving any sliders or pointers. It helps users look at multiple colors at once and choose between them. Kévin PEIGNOT wrote on March 17, 2013 8:23 PM: Issa New should be on the left and Old on the right. I don't really see why (for me, history (old) is on the left, future (new) on the right) but it's done; Because New is the more important one and the one that will be updated. I feel that it is natural for it to be there (it is even implemented that way in the color map). Usually it's top/bottom for New/Old in most programs though. Maybe we should find a way to do that? Mirek If we agree to have a gear button, it should really be a menu. I'm not 100% sure that we need it for the first implementation, though. Issa The theme creator dialog should be replaced with a drop down menu for changing themes, possibly next to the theme colors label. I'm not sur about that : You do not change your theme so often, The popover is a fast access tool. More of that, seeing the M$ theme creator window [2], this could take a lot of place. Not sure it's a good idea having such a big popover; While I definitely prefer a drop down menu, if we are going with the icon we need to have a label next to it (theme options or something). Issa The colors beneath the basic ones should be even to clear confusion about the gap between the third and fourth rows (to show that the third isn't the middle color). I don't really understand what you means there. Should the separation between the first line and derivates be bigger ? What I meant is that the number of color aside from the first should be an even number (2, 4, etc.) because the middle shade was already removed to the top. Something like this (lower numbers represent brighter colors): [3] ---//gap [1] [2] [4] [5] -Wouldn't it be better if we use a color map/square for the HSL instead of the wheel since it's already implemented and prettier in my opinion? Personally I prefer the wheel. Then I'm not sure what would be the good choice. Maybe we should have a voting then to see what most people think :) - When using the standard colors as the default theme, what would appear in the palette tab ? I think this shouldn't happen : the palette is there to present majority of colors, the theme present colors that fit well together. The default theme should be something else, that we will define. It have to be pretty has lot of people (in M$ Office at least, since it's not horrible) use the default one. But for me, the palette is fixed. Fair enough. Maybe we can even use LibreOffice branding theme or Tango theme as the default. ___ Regards, Issa Alkurtass Motah Program, KACST Warning: This message and its attachment, if any, are confidential and may contain information protected by law. The green header is part of a plan to redesign and restructure the whole website, including merging it with the older website. That is if it gets the ok :) What I like about the current new design (hehe ^^), the one with the half-circle is the fact that it looks really fresh and modern, if you understand what I mean. THe one with the green header is more LibreOffice-like but also more traditional. I guess that it was part of the redesign to make the LO page more modern. Maybe we should try to combine the green header with the modern elements from the current page. And of course priority one should be to keep the page consistent. Depends on what you mean by modern: -If you mean using grays, stock photos and fancy screens then I disagree. I don't think it suits the nature of our project. -If you mean using the great tech behind the website (sliders, one page jump navigation, @font-face, etc.) then I totally agree. My plan is to adapt that using current LibreOffice look and merge it with the original website. ___ Regards, Issa Alkurtass Motah Program, KACST Warning: This message and its attachment, if any, are confidential and may contain information protected by law. Hello Kévin, webmaster, Emir, Kévin PEIGNOT wrote on March 05, 2013 5:56 PM: Then, I'm not sure about the Tentative Design part : why snapshots, then latest snapshots ? I think just the last snapshot, in context, is enough. The duplicate part don't seems me useful. Maybe just a snapshot of all currents icons and one in context ? They are like that. One is a sheet, which is how the current icons look. The other is a screenshot, which is how they would look in context/in the program. I didn't really think about the captions/naming, perhaps you can change it to something more meaningful :) Other question, where did you find the Gnome Symbolic icons for your snapshots ? All Gnome icons are available here https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-icon-theme/ While I'm trying to reuse everything I can, a lot of them had to be edited or even drawn from scratch. webmaster-Kracked_P_P wrote on March 05, 2013 5:14 PM: Those icons need the white-ish background to show up instead of the transparent looking background. So, any new icon needs to have a non-transparent background. I don't think that would be a good choice, if we do so the icons won't be platform independent nor theme independent. Wouldn't two variants (dark and light) be a better solution to this problem? Emir Yâsin SARI wrote on March 05, 2013 6:16 PM: I wonder, if the icons could be a little bit darker, at this state they are barely readable. Good point, I forgot to bring it up. We need to choose a color for the icons, I suggest choosing either Tango palette or LibreOffice [branding] palette: Tango's dark grays: 2e3436, 555753. LibO's dark grays: 66, 33. Please note that this decision would most likely affect future colored flat icons. On other hand the colors can be changed with one click at any time so we don't have to worry about it for now :) Or they'll look already better when implemented? Or is it better to discuss this on the wiki? You can see that for yourself in the wiki page. Kévin PEIGNOT wrote on March 05, 2013 6:39 PM: Do someone know if there is, somewhere, a list of all the icons we actually use ? We could definitely try that :) Jean-Francois Nifenecker wrote on February 19, 2013 10:33 PM: PS: I'd have smthg else than a drawer as the Save icon, but well... This is the current icon for the save on Linux. The Windows version will still use the floppy disk icon and the Mac will use... whatever it currently uses. But all I can say is that the final versions should render better. Axel wrote on February 20, 2013 4:12 AM: You made the samples using the large version of icons and this is ok for now, but when creating the final icons, we must be sure they look very well at small size. Noted, thanks for the reminder :) From my point of view, if everyone agree we need a colored version, I think our next step is to select the colors we want to use. The ones used in this mockup look somehow sad for my taste. What do you think? Well I simply picked LibreOffice primary colors to tie it closer to the brand. We could use the brighter variations. When this step is done, we should discuss the symbols that we think could be improved or we agree they have problems. (How do you think is easier to track the discussions around each icon? Should we create a new thread for any icon we want to analyze/debate? Or maybe is better to work in wiki pages to see together the icons, their history and the related comments?) We've discussed this in the last meeting and Mirek is currently trying out other more practical setups. [libreoffice-design] Flat/Symbolic Icons Update
Hello world, So on last Saturday's meeting we've decided to revive the flat icons by expanding on GNOME symbolic icon set to include LibreOffice icons. This would be way faster than starting from scratch and would help us gain a unified look on GNOME and a clean modern look on other platforms :) Before we get any further with them I wanted to see what people thought of the idea so I mashed together the buttons for the main toolbar https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Symbolic-test.png Since we don't necessarily want to go monochrome we can have our own colored version of them as well https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Symbolic-test-colored.png (As of now these icons won't be replacing anything, they will merely be an available alternative.) ___ Regards, Issa Alkurtass Motah Program, KACST Warning: This message and its attachment, if any, are confidential and may contain information protected by law. RE: [libreoffice-design] RE: What Happened to the Flat Icon Set
Hello Michel, Michel Renon wrote on February 18, 2013 2:09 PM: Here is a complement to avoid misinterpretation (my sentence was too short/compact) : I'm not against changes. I really expect them for LO ! But we must make every UI change with usability first in mind. If we change icon set just to be able to say we have new icons !, we'll just disturb existing users. There was some recent studies about icon. They can be used to provide and evolution of current icon set. And why not, to show/hide the most used one. Let's do user-testing on prototypes to be sure that any change will improve usability. We obviously wouldn't change the default icons without testing them for usability, but that doesn't mean we can't have such new icons as an alternative icon set (until their proven to be solid.. or not). Also you are underestimating the power of a fresh coat of paint, if done right a simple redesign alone could sell the program :) ___ Regards, Issa Alkurtass Motah Program, KACST Warning: This message and its attachment, if any, are confidential and may contain information protected by law. Hello Lirodon, Sorry for the blank email earlier. Hi Mirek, Mirek M. wrote on Monday, February 11, 2013 3:44 AM: Hi Issa, Given that this is a community-run project, it's a bit of both. We're working on a new icon set, but one based on the Gnome icon theme. If you'd like to help with that, tell us in a reply (and perhaps tag Alex Wilms in the message, as he's the one who's working on it). However, a flat icon set might come in handy, either for future use in our Android port or as an optional icon pack users could switch to, so you're welcome to take that project and lead it. You could use Gnome's symbolic icons as a basis (more appropriate for the desktop version) [1] and probably Android ones as well, though I don't know what the license is on those. And if you'd like to use our social networks to get the word out, just tell us. [1] http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-icon-theme-symbolic/ I was kinda hoping the flat icons would be the new defaults :( I could possibly help with the new icons. Hello Daniel, Marc, Sorry guys I didn't into account localization when I first made it. It looks great! Unfortunately, as it's in the PSD format, it's not accessible for our translators. I don't know if you could manage to convert it to GIMP's XCF format with editable text, but please remember to do so next time. You can either make the whole file in GIMP or create the bitmap parts in Photoshop and add text layers in GIMP. Or, if you create the image in Inkscape, that's even better! :) Thanks for the contribution. Also reported by a nl team member: I liked vey much the idea. I wanted to add to my translated announcement. However, a PSD file is a PhotoShop (TM) bitmap image and not a vector one. I can't easily translate it. Sigh ... IMO, if you convert the image into Inkscape, it would be better, and, some nl teams will use it on their sites, even after their sites go live. FOSS is normally the default software for our project unless we are really forced to use any other. Really nice update to Daniel's initial post! Like it a lot!!! Here's the .svg version.
