[Bug 49547] Re: gdmsetup command crash when launch it

2006-06-13 Thread Vassilis Pandis
Hi, and thanks for taking the time to file this problem. Is this on 6.06, on an
i386 platform? I can''t reproduce it here can you please try to obtain a
backtrace by following the instructions on
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash ?
It will rebuild the entire gdm package, so you'd be better of reinstalling it
from the the repos when you're done with the backtrace. I'm not sure how you
can build just gdmsetup. Thanks again.

2006-06-13 Thread Andras Nemeseri
I can confirm this bug. It's really-really annoying and should be fixed
soon.

I've found a solution... Please let me know if it's working for you.

/etc/network/interfaces:

add this line right after your active interface setup:

pre-up sleep 5

i.e:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
pre-up sleep 5

I don't know why the devs not working on it... :-(
It's sooo sad.

[Bug 49537] mixer applet no longer works

2006-06-13 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Today, the mixer applet stopped working. If I try to add it to the
panel, all I get is:

The panel encountered a problem while loading
OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet.

Also every time I log in I get a message that the gnome settings daemon
restarted too many times, although everything else on my desktop works.

I see the following on the terminal:
** (mixer_applet2:12915): WARNING **: FIXME: wait for completion unimplemented

I can't tell what image it's talking about.

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot

2006-06-13 Thread mistr
If worked here - at least for now (I restarted the system a few times
without problems).

In my opinion, this work-around also points to a timing issue between
starting the ethernet network, starting the samba system and mouting the
network shares.

Most of most of the above mentioned suggestions influence the point in
time when a specific service is started:

putting smbfs in /etc/modules: early in the boot process

mounting shares in /etc/rc.local: late in the boot process

pre-up sleep 5 in /etc/network/interfaces: give something else more time
to finish

This would also be consistent with my observation that the /etc/modules
variant sometimes work and sometimes it doesn't.

My guess: This problem is a hick-up in the multi-threaed booting process
introduced sometime during the latest Dapper pre-releases.

[Bug 48887] Re: Zooming/Text functions cause 100% CPU Utilization possible memory leak?

2006-06-13 Thread Klaus Stengel
I experience the same problem. I did some analysis with valgrind and
noticed that the problem isn't dia itself, but the text-layout library
'libpango'. On every redraw event some pieces of font information are
gathered by that library, but won't be cleaned up again so that dia (and
any other program that uses certain functions of libpango) takes more
and more memory until it has to be killed because there is no more space
left ( so called memory leak). This explains the OOMs the original
poster experienced and why it only happens when text objects are
involved.

[Bug 49452] Re: [Bug 49452] Re: Dapper - nautilus freezes when opening a remote folder

2006-06-13 Thread chombee
This is really weird, my 'Network Servers' bookmark to my SSH remote
account is now working fine with nautilus. Just 5 mins. ago the same
folder was causing nautilus to freeze as it had been since I upgraded to
dapper. There are two things that I did that I imagine could possibly be
related between when it was freezing and when it started working:

* Successfully accessed a remote account over FTP with nautilus
* Removed all my nautilus bookmarks to remote folders. I had 3 bookmarks
to remote SSH folders in nautilus 'Places' instead of in 'Network
Servers'.

It is now working fine also if I launch nautilus on the command line and
pass it a remote SSH folder.

I tried bookmarking the SSH folder in nautilus places again, then logged
in and logged out, but this has not reproduced the freeze. It works
fine.

I also tried unmounting the SSH volume, then accessing it again by the
Places bookmark, and it still works fine.

Weird.

I was surprised to see this unmount option, does nautilus keep
connections to all my remote folders whenever I have the remote folder
icon on the desktop, even though the icon remains when I log out and log
in?

[Bug 49452] Re: Dapper - nautilus freezes when opening a remote folder

2006-06-13 Thread chombee
Nope, I've managed to produce the freeze again. Made 'Places' bookmarks
to my 3 remote SSH folders, unmounted all 3 volumes in 'Network
Servers', logged out and logged in again, tried to open one of the
remote bookmarks, nautilus freezes.

I then accessed the remote folder by going to 'Connect to Server' and it
worked, and after that the Places bookmarks were working fine again.

But try to access a seperate Places bookmark (for a different SSH
account) and nautilus freezes. Access THAT bookmark by Connect to
Server, it works, unmount the volume, try accessing it by the Places
bookmark again, it works.

But after a while the Places bookmarks will stop working and will freeze
nautilus again.

I'm not describing it very well and the behaviour seems inconsistent and
confuses me, but it certainly seems there's a problem with nautilus in
dapper concerning at least remote SSH folders being bookmarked as
Places, though I think the same folders are fine if they aren't
bookmarked as Places but are accessed with Connect to Server.

If I keep all my remote folders mounted as remote volumes and don't
bookmark them in nautilus then I seem to be able to access them multiple
times, log out, restart etc. and get no problems.

2006-06-13 Thread chombee
Another thing (perhaps this should be a separate bug)... when I have
remote volume icons on my desktop for these SSH folders they remain
after log outs and restarts, and have an 'unmount' option. Is nautilus
automatically opening SSH connections and mounting these volumes when I
log in?

How come if I open a remote folder via Places or by the command line the
mounted volume icon with the unmount option doesn't appear on my
desktop, but if I open the same folder by Connect to Server it does?

[Bug 49579] screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2006-06-13 Thread Ben Scholl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I'm running a fresh install of Dapper with screensaver set to 'blank
screen', and 'lock screen when screensaver is active' enabled.

If a panel menu (e.g. Applications) is open and the machine is left
idle, the screen fails to lock. It fades out after the time period as
expected, but the desktop reappears after a few seconds.

Ben (comments / criticism welcome, this is my first bug report)

[Bug 44465] Re: I saw the issue on x86. Transiently.

2006-06-13 Thread Richard Theil
cupsd locked up at roughly 80-90% in top with the remainder going to the
drivers. One printer (Epson Stylus C70) had been added on USB before. I was
going to configure an HP LaserJet 5L on lp0. gnome-cups-add hangs displaying
reading driver database for over 3 minutes (on a 1800 MHz Athlon). I did a
/etc/init.d/cupsys stop. As I issued that command, gnome-cups-add continued
and showed me both printers were recognized, however, in the next step
(selecting the drivers) there was an empty list.
During the hanging, I extracted the following output:

 5734 cupsys16 0 4344 2120 1440 S 70.6 0.4 1:56.08 cupsd
 5794 cupsys25 0 9812 7752 716 R 23.5 1.5 0:27.14 cups-driverd

time(NULL) = 1150204917
time(NULL) = 1150204917
time(NULL) = 1150204917
...
repeated over and over.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/rich# lsof | grep 5734
[and then, out of a sudden, gnome-cups-add continued and allowed me to add the
printer, with cupsd at 3:24 cpu time. ]
 5734 cupsys15 0 4344 2120 1440 S 0.3 0.4 3:24.25 cupsd

Was that a coincidence, a heisenbug or did it actually require 800
billion operations to figure out what printers i might have...? On a
retry, it went rather quick (about 10 seconds) and seemed to work. But
IIRC, i have seen the hanging gnome printer discovery briefly on a
completely unrelated PIII-machine with an earlier version of cups (where
I was more concerned about the rip crashing like i reported in another
bug).

[Bug 13554] Re: does not poll ZIP drive for media changes

2006-06-13 Thread Martin Pitt
So, to summarize:

 * hal knows nothing about the ZIP drive.
 * The system does not know about the ZIP drive after a clean boot.
 * The kernel recognizes the drive properly and you can manually mount it after
'modprobe ppa'

Is that correct? If so, does hal see the ZIP drive after

  sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/20hal restart

? If so, then the problem is somewhere in the hal/udev communication.

Also, can you please do a clean boot, then do

  sudo udevmonitor -e

then do 'sudo modprobe ppa' on another console, and copypaste the
udevmonitor output here? (Assuming that there is no /dev/* device for
your ZIP drive before loading ppa).

Thank you!

I'd rather that the strings in a menu be put in one gettext file. This
reduces the amount of disk IO needed.

Benchmarks have shown that the additional disk i/o is negigible. I
wouldn't like to sacrifice the possibility of updating translations
through language packs for half a second faster startup time. The
memory footprint should be reduced, though.

[Bug 44196] Re: gnome-cups-icon uses 100% CPU

2006-06-13 Thread Nikolaus Rath
This bug is marked Needs Info, but I wasn't able to find any
unanswered requests for info. So if there's something missing, please
post what kind of info is needed, because I'd like to provide it (I also
suffer from this bug and it's quite annoying because it prevents CPU
frequency scaling on my laptop).

[Bug 46536] Re: USB HDD FAT32 partition without label doesn't mount

2006-06-13 Thread Martin Pitt
It's due to the pretty stange label on /dev/sda1:

  volume.label = 'BODY
  /HT' (string)

I'll fix pmount-hal to replace slashes in the device label with another
character (underscore, perhaps). In the meantime, you can change the
label of the first partition (under Windows, perhaps, since there is
unfortunately no tool in Linux to change the label of a FAT partition).

Revisiting this a few weeks later: I had some time to fiddle with the
Google sidebar, but it turns out I'm not a very good JS hacker. :(
Could we add the default Google sidebar for now and maybe I (or anyone
else) could work on getting a nice Ubuntu one worked up down the road,
i.e. before Edgy's release?

[Bug 44874] Re: auto smbfs mount in /etc/fstab causes hald hang at boot

2006-06-13 Thread fraco
some more info:
After hanging on hald, and hanging on entering the desktop, the mount doesn't
work.

every time i do
ifdown eth0; ifup eth0
or mount /mymount

I find following message in my dmesg
Jun 13 21:44:17 localhost kernel: [4296366.388000] smb_lookup: find //DISK 1
failed, error=-5

and the mount still doesn't work

strangely, //DISK 1 is the name of the share, but I would expect the
servername too, complete path would have been //server/DISK 1

Tim

[Bug 48118] do not show unmounted nonremovable drives

2006-06-13 Thread joe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pmount

This is stupid. If there is an icon in my Computer:// it should be
mountable. Every user who tries this to access the normally not
configured vfat partitions from former systems gets smacked with the
super usability to use extra tools or console.

Therefore, pmount has to mount non-removable media on request. There is
no need to automount but if requestet it has to mount in my opinion.

[Bug 48118] Re: do not show unmounted nonremovable drives

2006-06-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Usually hard disk partitions should be mounted through /etc/fstab (with
'auto'), that's how the installer sets them up. So nautilus should just
not display unmounted nonremovable drives.

[Bug 48249] Re: Low disk space notification doesn't works with memory sticks (pendrives)

2006-06-13 Thread Martin Pitt
I specifically disabled the warning for non-system drives since many
users cried out loudly that this was too annoying. The idea of this
warning is to give a hint why your system is suddenly acting strange,
which happens on a full root partition. This can't happen on removable
drives, though.

I think the current solution is reasonable, therefore I'm closing this
bug. It might become better in the future when this warning becomes
configurable (see bug 33967).

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Sorry, the archive still does not have fixed binaries. Only the source
is on the mirror, apparently the buildds need a manual kick to actually
built the new package. Reopening bug until that's fixed.

[Bug 34112] Re: gnome programs don't respect ~/.cups/lpoptions

2006-06-13 Thread mannheim
Maybe I have messed up apt, or misunderstood. But I don't think that
binary debs are in the archive.

If I do apt-get source then I do get a source tree which contains the
patch. But I don't see the binary debs in

[Bug 46536] Re: pmount-hal: replace slashes in labels

2006-06-13 Thread Tomohisa Kusano
Thanks, giving the partition a label (and removing it again) in Windows worked.
Oddly, even Windows doesn't let me use slashes in disk labels, so this must be
a truly exceptional case... but that's something else. (The only suspect so far
is Acronis True Image; I'll ask the support there)

For me, screensaver never restarts. I simply cannot lock my screen at
all. I'll try to reboot and see what happens then.

My bad, it seems this computer (not mine) is not using the official gaim
package, but rather a 2.0 beta version.
