Thanks James. If I only knew it a day before then it would save my self
a lot of time, effort and saved from frustration. I can work around that
when I know what is available. BTW it still does not run on Konqueror,
but it is start.

[Bug 247469] [NEW] nautilus takes a while to load up a directory with a lot of images sorted by modification date

2008-07-11 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

when i try to open my images directory which is a really huge folder
full of images and subdirectories sorted by modification date, it takes
forever for nautilus to finish loading all the files and their
thumbnails. while it's loading them, the already-loaded thumbnails keep
moving around in every direction rendering the whole window useless for
about a minute or so till it all finishes loading..

when i tried to load the same folder in thunar after sorting by
modification date as well, it didn't take any time at all and the folder
loaded up in a second.. the thumbnails were probably all already cached,
but still that didn't stop nautilus from going crazy every time i try to
open the images folder again..

[Bug 206583] Re: System Monitor crashes when lowering nice value of process

2008-07-11 Thread Diabolo
It seems it has problems with raising permissions. Any operation that
would require superuser's permission crashes System Monitor. I find it
particularly annoying when trying to kill some other user's process.

ATM the only way I know of to get around this bug is to launch SM
explicitly with superuser's permissions:

sudo gnome-system-monitor

I have also recompiled the package as mentioned earlier and it seemed to
work for a while, but recently the bug has reappeared. This last part is
particularly confusing.

[Bug 187141] Re: gnome logout button takes forever

2008-07-11 Thread Klaus Thorn
enabling gnome-power-manager is a working workaround on my Ubunntu-8.04
x86 desktop.

the situation was a bit worsened by a hidden entry of gnome-power-
manager in my case. I had to remove .config/autostart/gnome-power-
manager.desktop first to make it appear again.

is there a place to configure a shorter time(out?) after clicking the
logout button till presenting the logout menu?

It seems to be 50 seconds.

What is the name of the program and package who is waiting these 50
seconds? x-session-manager? panel? gnome-applets?

[Bug 247553] [NEW] Package doesn't build from source if any EXTRA_PLUGINS are added

2008-07-11 Thread Thomas Fogwill
Public bug reported:

There is a problem on line 130 of debian/rules that breaks the generated
control file if anything is set for EXTRA_PLUGINS.
The basic control file is generated first in lines 108-117. Then the entries
for the EXTRA_PlUGINS are added in lines 118-130.
However, an error on line 130 causes the control file to be completely
overwritten.

dpkg-buildpackage then fails with:
dpkg-checkbuilddeps: error: syntax error in debian/control at line 10: first
block lacks a source field

The erroneous line 130 reads:
sed 's/@GST_GCONF_LIB_DEV_DEP@/$(gst_gconf_lib_dev_dep)/g' $@; \
which overwrites the control file.

It should read:
   sed 's/@GST_GCONF_LIB_DEV_DEP@/$(gst_gconf_lib_dev_dep)/g' $@; \
so that the entries are appended without overwriting the file.

[Bug 235883] Re: gnome-terminal is handling wierdly french ipa nasal wowels signs

2008-07-11 Thread dominiko
I've noticed that too quite a wile ago. Gnome terminal (and terminator)
don't handle properly composing Unicode characters.

The first character in the attached file french ipa signs is composed
of:

   ɛ Hex 025b + ̃ Hex 0303 (utf-8 sequence: c9 9b + cc 83)

(you can check that by the ga or g8 command in vim)

0x303 is a composing character so normally it should be displayed on top of the
previous character.
But gnome terminal does not do it properly.

gvim does display it properly.

[Bug 198030] Re: brasero does not check disc integrity right

2008-07-11 Thread Jason Pell
I have the same problem as ondre on ubuntu 8.10 and Brasero 0.71. trying
to burn DVDs - the DVD burns correctly but then fails to do integrity
check and there is not additional information other than the operation
not supported message. Basically what happens is the disc burns
successfully - it then gets ejected and prompts me to push it back in (I
have a laptop) so that it can do the integrity check but then fails with
the operation not supported error.

[Bug 125734] Re: Firefox scrollbar doesn't use the infinite size usability effect

2008-07-11 Thread Nick Welch
Woohoo!

I've finally come up with the magic bit of CSS to work around this:

hbox#browser { margin-right: -1px !important; }

(to anyone reading this that isn't sure what to do with that, copy/paste
it into ~/.mozilla/firefox/your profile/chrome/userChrome.css)

This may be not be the absolute most correct solution (I think some
other element has a border/margin/padding of 1 where it should be 0, but
I couldn't track it down), but it fixes the problem for me perfectly.

 Hello Frank,

The console output and the .xsession-errors both point to a critical
error on memory management, which seem to cause Evolution to die.

Unfortunately, we do not have a nice backtrace to follow this up... so I
would like to check some other things with you:

 (1) Could you please enable apport (automatic trace collector)? To do so,
please open a terminal, and edit '/etc/default/apport', and change
'enabled=0' to 'enabled=1'. You can use 'sudo gedit /etc/default/apport',
 for example.
 (2) after enabling apport, please reproduce your issue. At he end you
should have apport kicking in on a pop-up; open a new bug, and refer to this
one (we will then close this one, and follow up on the new bug).

Also, please be aware that we will be releasing Evolution 2.22.3.1 in a
few (and it might already be available on the Hardy-proposed
repositories), and it might be worth it to check if you still experience
 this issue on 2.22.3.1.

 Thank you.

[Bug 185311] Re: hardy, locking assertion failure, xorg/libsdl

2008-07-11 Thread Alex Demko
Bryce, thanks for the update and your good work on the issue. Keeping
the community in the loop is one reason why I'm glad I switched over to
Ubuntu back when I did, even if it means tripping over an odd bug or
two.

I really hope Canonical decides to unroll the xcb stuff in libX11 (and
perhaps release an updated Compiz that uses its own private xcb+X11).
Even if you guys think you understand all the broken cases, I'm sure
there will be piles of older software that will simply break (and won't
be reported here), leaving a lot of frustrated users and their
applications. Even if your updates expose bugs in the user client
application itself, the user will still blame Ubuntu, and might not have
any recourse for updating their old/unmaintained/vendor no longer
exists/etc software. I think the trade off, breaking an untold amount of
old applications (none of the work arounds work me at all, for example)
for compiz, just isn't worth it.

Having two seperate libX11 and libX11xcb libraries would allow a gradual
(and distinct) migration route for applications (well, more for
toolkits). Toolkits can switch to the X11+xcb one (or ideally, pure xcb)
at their own, hopefully well tested, pace.

Sorry to sound like a broken record on this topic :)

Public bug reported:

System (Hardy) crashed while doing an update.
When running the update again evolution was reported as a broken package, which
could be fixed through synaptic.

Rerunning the update manger always leads to errors when trying to
configure the said packages.

There are lots of gconftool-2 Errors: GConf-CRITICAL **: Failed to load file
The problem seems to be that the xml files in /var/lib/gconf/defaults are empty

running dpkg --configure -a
gives series of messages like

dpkg-reconfigure does not help either

Evolution cannot be executed. (Luckily I do not use it)
Every update now gives out errors because the evolution packages cannot be

[Bug 247638] [NEW] gnomine new game keys awkward

2008-07-11 Thread Jason
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

There should be an option to use a one key combination to start a new
gnomine game.

Ctrl-N is standard, but awkward to use with one hand, as the other hand
is using the mouse.

A option to also use 'F2' would be a good enhancement.

[Bug 247067] Re: Evolution fails to launch

2008-07-11 Thread hggdh
@Frank: yes, but it will be a bit painful... Chris' is correct, and it
was a good catch from him.

You will need to install both the evolution-exchange and evolution debug
packages; then you can either run it again from the console, and attach
the output here, or run evolution under gdb (from a console also). It
seems, from the trace available, that evolution-exchage is causing the
grief, but the trace is rather incomplete.

Please tell us if you need detailed instructions.

[Bug 88656] [NEW] type-ahead prediction broken at least in alt-f2 box

2008-07-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

I think this appeared after I downloaded upgrades to 6.06 on Monday.

Previously, if I press alt-f2 to get the 'Run Application' box and type
'gnumeric', 'gnumeric' appeared in the box; the 'meric' part had
appeared, highlighted, as soon as I pressed the m.

Now, if I press alt-f2 and type 'gnumeric', 'gnumeric' appears in the

It seems you need to enable apport: open a terminal, and 'sudo gedit

Then try again, with a SIGSEGV (kill -SEGV `pidof evolution` should do
the trick). This should kick apport.

[Bug 238463] Re: URL handling in gnome-terminal

2008-07-11 Thread Ian Goldberg
I also just upgraded from Dapper to Hardy, and am experiencing this.
Long URLs only get their first line recognized. Oddly, sometimes it
works fine. If I paste a long URL into vi or the command line, the
whole thing is recognized. If I cat a file with a long URL, the whole
thing is recognized. But viewing an email message within mutt, it is
not. (Could it have something to do with curses, or an application
doing a single write(2) containing the whole URL?)

I think it's better to err on the side of recognizing too much, since
it's more rare for a URL to end exactly at a line boundary than it is
for one to be arbitrarily longer.

[Bug 247691] [NEW] GDM Init/Default runs xrdb trying to merge a directory instead of a file

2008-07-11 Thread Jim McQuillan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The Init script for GDM: /etc/gdm/Init/Default is looking to see if
/etc/X11/Xresources is a file. If it is, it merges the entries in that
file into the X server's resources.

Here's the problem code from /etc/gdm/Init/Default:

--
sysresources=/etc/X11/Xresources

# merge in defaults
if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi
--

The problem is, /etc/X11/Xresources is a directory. It contains a file
called 'x11-common'.

So, the system Xresources never get merged.

The GDM Init/Default script should be modified to merge any files found
in that directory, but I think the directory should be named with a '.d'
suffix. IE, it should be: /etc/X11/Xresources.d

Then, the x11-common package should be modified to put it's x11-common
resource file into the new /etc/X11/Xresources.d directory.

This would be similar to the way /etc/X11/Xsession.d is handled but we
don't need to source the files, we need to merge them with xrdb.

I found this problem on Hardy, here's the output of lsb_release -rd:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/X11# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

The version of the gdm package is: 2.20.6-0ubuntu2

Also, I checked on an Edgy machine and the same problem existed there as
well.

[Bug 231384] Re: Gtk+ applications slow when local (lo) network interface not upped

2008-07-11 Thread tristan_lefebure
I confirm that networkmanager does not start the lo interface when I'm
using a static IP configuration on eth1 (at work). This causes several
GTK applications, including firefox, to be extremely slow. When using
the wireless (wlan0, at home), lo is started automatically and I don't
have this problem. The problem can be fixed with a simple 'sudo ifup lo'

This problem happened recently (~2 weeks ago), and might be linked to an
update.

OS: Kubuntu 8.04

[Bug 247619] [NEW] F Spot in Ubuntu Hardy can't not import pictures from a MMC card

2008-07-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Because of my specific interest for this application, I'd want to use F Spot
under Ubuntu (Gnome) to import, process and export all my pictures, coming from
a MINOLTA Dimage A200 supporting MMC cards and from a Panasonic FX supporting
SD cards.
Unfortunately, this application f-spot 0.4.3.1 inside Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1
(Gnome Desktop) fails to import pictures contained in the MMC cards loaded by
my MINOLTA.
To load my pictures into my PC, I use an USB internal device, which functions
perfectly under Windows XP (with Photoshop Elements 4), and with Digikam under
Gnome or KDE desktops, either with SD or MMC cards; when I insert the MMC card
into the slot of the USB device, an Media 1.0 Gio icon appears, and opening
the media leads to a DCIM folder which contains folders named
/media/disk-1/DCIM/10180405 for example, but these last folders are said to
contain no pictures when opened by the Gnome navigator; from these folders F.
Spot imports only one picture and stops, although there is no problem with
Dgikam.
So I think there is something wrong between Fspot application and/or Gnome
Desktop software, versus MMC cards and/or the Dimage A200 camera.
I think that the conjunction of F. Spot and The Gimp consists in the best way
of processing pictures under Ubuntu for an amateur and I regret what happened
in my case. So many thanks for a solution adapted to a beginner very interested
in moving from Windows/ Photoshop to Linux.

[Bug 247619] Re: F Spot in Ubuntu Hardy can't not import pictures from a MMC card

2008-07-11 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in f-spot.

[Bug 30942] Re: Request to add option to disable 'Recent Documents' lists.

2008-07-11 Thread ELG
This has been open since 2005. Is anyone working on adding this as a
setting at the very least to gconf-editor? It would be preferable for
the Recent Documents to have a preferences option added to its tab. I
would love to see something added as it gets rather tedious manually
typing commands for every machine and also trying to explain this to new
Linux users does not come across as very user friendly. Thanks for all
efforts to accomplish this!
