[Bug 356515] Re: Jaunty: indicator applet cannot be removed from panel when inactive (it simply cannot be seen)
I'm experiencing it as well. When the applet is inactive, there is no icon to indicate position, or that it's even on. When moving the window list panel application around, it will run up against it and compresses the window list icons - as they should and do when running into any other panel applet. The only problem is that there is nothing viewable where the applet is located. [Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
Just my 2 cents: Some people here have discussed the options: relative positioning, keeping track of positions with different resolutions, flexible spaces, etc. However, as some others have pointed out already, gnome already _has_ a great scheme, which is actually working very well: the panel_right_stick boolean. It's even possible to give the positions as an index instead of pixels (so, 0, 1, 2, 3) which allows for relative positioning. The problem is that upon resize, the panel disregards your settings and rewrites (some of) them with the panel_right_stick set to False and calculates the exact pixel offset. Upon switching to a greater resolution your applets keep this exact offset and everything is messed up. One workaround mentions to set one particular settings file to read- only, thus preventing gnome to touch (i.e. mess up) your applet positioning. My question (and our problem, I believe) is this: why on earth won't gnome just leave my applet settings alone? I paid particular attention to the fact that my applets don't run into each other when switching to a lower resolution so I see no reason _at all_ to change the settings. -- Applets do not scale well with changing resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
From what I can judge the problem is not how the panel behaves when it is resized, but how it behaves when adding applets to the panel, i.e. practically always choosing to store the position as absolute from left, instead of from right. In fact, once I corrected all the settings manually in gconf, all applets retain their correct positions no matter how often I change resolution, i.e. I would suggest gnome does not really change any settings in the panel. What would have to be done is, when adding an applet, make the panel detect if the new applet touches an existing stack of applets that is aligned to the left / right, and store the positioning of the new applet consequently: either stick right enabled or disabled, and not using full-width pixel positions, but rather storing à la index. -- Applets do not scale well with changing resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

The bug was also present in 32bit Intrepid shortly after its release, but went away with upgrades a couple of days after release. A temporary solution is to keep multiple accounts but keep only one active (and after crash, do not let it retrieve mail, but set the accounts back to 'single active account mode' before attempting retrieval) - but the need for constant change is quite a nuisance when working at different places. ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: Incomplete -- evolution crashes when more than one mail account is activated https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/365917 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
I think the problem _is_ how the panel behaves when it is resized. Have a look at the first comments. There's a workaround with gconf which makes the panel's handling much more graceful, but this is analogous to Windows users having to edit the registry to be able to change resolutions nicely. It doesn't make sense. I thought David's comment #30 was pretty spot-on, and I see this as: 1. Exposing the gconf positioning controls through the user-interface, or finding a way to infer what they should be 2. Not breaking them when resizing (or adding new controls, as per Sandro's point) -- Applets do not scale well with changing resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution
@Sandro: I agree with Aidan. It's not only when adding applets. However, I just now only managed to break things when switching to lower resolution, log off, log in, switching to higher resolution. Without the log off, log in, I tried to restart the panel between, before and after switching resolutions, but nothing broke. It did, however, after log off, log in. I don't know why. Maybe the problem is not even in the gnome-panel code directly. It would be really, really nice to get a list of which code touches the gconf settings, and when. @Aidan: Thanks! [Bug 365964] [NEW] Run application text input expansion works incorrectly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Steps to reproduce: 1. sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jdk 2. press Alt+F2 to start Run application dialog of gnome-panel 3. Type j and wait for a few seconds (so that the list of icons have been updated 4. Type c the input now reads jc[on] where the part between brackets is selected (This is correct, possible choices are jconsole and jcontrol) 5. Type o Expected results: The input now reads jco[n] (the n is selected an will be overwritten if I type anything) Actual results: The input now reads jcon (the n is not selected). This prevents me from successfully launching the jconsole by typing jcons in the dialog because after the jco part the input has been changed to jcon and when I continue the rest of the program name (nsole) the end result is jconnsole which obviously does not work. Other information: There seems to be some kind of race condition somewhere because sometimes the n is correctly selected after jco part and sometimes not. It seems that waiting after the j helps to reproduce the problem. I haven't examined if the problem is caused by the fact that jconsole can be found from the main menu (and so has an icon) and jcontrol cannot be found from the main menu (and has no icon but application says in the bottom Will run command: 'jcontrol' if I toggle the Show list of known applications). $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.04 Release:9.04 $ apt-cache policy gnome-panel gnome-panel: Installed: 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu7 Candidate: 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu7 Version table: *** 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu7 0 500 http://fi.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Run application text input expansion works incorrectly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365964 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 365964] Re: Run application text input expansion works incorrectly
Did you try multiple times? As you can see, I'm also running jaunty. I'd say that n is not selected about 4 times in 10. Because this seems to be some kind of race condition, I'll report some extra information: Possible factors: CPU speed, kernel, Xorg $ uname -a Linux semyol-329-b 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep model name | uniq model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz $ dpkg-query --show xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-intel2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9 I agree that importance is low right now, but if the problem is more visible with higher CPU speed, then it will be much more visible in the future. The issue seems to be also slightly easier to reproduce if you do not close the dialog but after trying once, you clear the input with backspace and type the letters again. In this case, it's easier to reproduce if all letters (jco) are rapidly typed. -- Run application text input expansion works incorrectly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365964 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 366037] [NEW] Up button lacks navigation along sub-domains
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser (This is more of a Blueprint than a bug; however, Blueprints seem to be disabled for the ephiphany-browser package.) One of the things I love about Epiphany is it's simplicity and speed: it has all the essential features of a web browser, and runs much quicker than other browsers on my system. One feature I consider essential is the up navigation. On Firefox, the extension uppity, as well as the Google Toolbar, implement this feature very well. I am pleased to see Epiphany includes this feature natively, and I mostly satisfied with the current behavior. In addition to the current behavior, I propose that the up navigation move up from sub-domains. For example, if I am at the following url: http://debtorrent.alioth.debian.org/ When I press up, I expect to move to the following location: http://alioth.debian.org/ Another move up should place me at: http://debian.org/ And here it stops. Currently, I don't see a way to move up subdomains. This is the natural and expected interpretation of up, as many websites use sub-domains in addition to folders for their hierarchy. [Bug 365819] Re: brasero does not eject source DVD to ask for blank DVD when burning 1:1
** Description changed: Binary package hint: brasero - When creating a 1:1 copy of a DVD, after brasero creates the image, it shows a dialog box with Copying ... or something like that but the source DVD is not ejected nor there is a way to do so. The only option is cancel and if clicked, everything it cleaned out. The second time I tried, when the dialog appeared, I copied the *iso image, opened by hand the disc tray and inserted the blank one. Nothing happened from the brasero side. So i cancelled and just burned the copies image into a DVD. When I looked this time, the original *iso file was there and it was a different size from the one I copied. After a quick check the burned copy works fine. On a third try, i actually left the computer and when I came back the tray was opening. I think that the checksum was taking place but there was no indication of that, and one thinks that - it has crashed. + When creating a 1:1 copy of a DVD, after brasero creates the image, it + shows a dialog box with Copying ... or something like that but the + source DVD is not ejected nor there is a way to do so.
