[Bug 59589] Re: display sleep time - why 11 minutes (gnome-power-preferences confusing to the users)
KDE and Windows have at least two profiles. One for battery and one for ac. If I want to shutdown the display after one minute in Gnome it is not possible. If I set the screensaver to one minute shuting down the display is possible after two minutes but at the same time my screen gets locked after 1 minute of idle which is pretty annoying. The locking feature is important for a laptop so there is no workaround. The whole thing is just stupid and I can only think of one advantage. If I set the display to go to sleep after one minute of idle time it shortly powers down after locking the screen manually and not after e.g. five minutes. But the penalties are much more worse. -- display sleep time - why 11 minutes (gnome-power-preferences confusing to the users) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59589 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly
A mockup by Daniele Medri is nice. My variant would be with path layed over launchpad buttons (with slashes and less spaces between). [Bug 356702] Re: Jaunty: window switcher tooltips stick when they shouldn't
To elaborate Travis' point about the window list, here's how that is affected: 1) configure window list to show windows from all workspaces 2) open some window on workspace 1 3) switch to a different workspace 4) click on window list entry for window on workspace 1 ensuring that you DON'T cause the tooltip to appear (ie don't hover long, just click!) 5) move away from the window list, watch the tooltip appear and remain persistent It doesn't happen 100% of the time but I haven't been able to figure out what causes it exactly. [Bug 131679] Re: Crash inside doPoll()
Just so people know (and sorry for the spam) every single duplicate of this bug is probably actually a completely different problem. Crashing in doPoll just means something went weird in compiz that didn't trip it up until the next time it went through this function. I'm not sure how all of these bugs ended up as duplicates (I know many/most were done automatically by apport) but we should probably at least have a separate bug for each action someone was performing when this happened. Also, unless someone finds the right magic to harden compiz to such problems there is probably no good way to debug this problem since the corruption of compiz state almost certainly happens at some early point that could be quite some time ago. -- Crash inside doPoll() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131679 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 391978] [NEW] Clicking whit the right button in the root directory of any removable disc don't appears volume and drive menu
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When I go to Equipo (my computer) and open the propiedades (properties) window of any mounted removable volume, a menu very interesting appears: I can change the default mount-point of that media and of all the volumes inserted in his drive. If I right click in the root directory of any mounted volume, and I open the propiedades (properties) window, the menu isn't the expected. The menu is the same but I haven't the mentioned options (the last two tabs aren't present) which must be the las two tabs, it's incomplete and have the option to share. If I try clicking in the properties menu of any disc from mi escritorio (my desktop), the menu is the first again, which is the semi complete menu. When I open the properties menu of any mounted volume clicking in his mount-point folder and selecting the submenu the incomplete menu appears (usually sited in the /media folder) but it's recognized as volume. Some times, the complete menu is very hard to find Summarizing, I have 3 types of properties menus: semi complete menu (also, this window haven't the compartir or share tab) [menu 1 image], incomplete menu of mounted volumes, it haven't the last two tabs [menu 2 image] (and it's in the most visited place and where the people normally must search this options) and the incomplete menu [menu 3 image](which is reasonable because the volume isn't mounted, it is as the last, but without the graph of used space) Also, could be an interesting feature add the ability to open the properties menu from the side panel, where are the places of the system (I can unmount the volumes, I can't see the properties) ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Status: Incomplete -- Clicking whit the right button in the root directory of any removable disc don't appears volume and drive menu https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/391978 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 331456] Re: Vinagre bug 331456
Hello Jon, and it was a good one! I noticed that, with scaling switched ON and in full-screen mode, the resolution took a hit on my display. Also that, if I kept in full-screen mode and switched OFF the scaling again: 1) Resolution was restored 2) Vinagre remained stable in full-screen mode. You can switch off scaling without leaving full-screen mode by moving the cursor to the top of the screen to reveal the vinagre full-screen control panel. Then click on the magnifying glass icon. Best of all worlds! Thanks again. Status in Vinagre: VNC client for GNOME: New Status in “vinagre” source package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: vinagre I'm 'abusing' my Ubuntu laptop as an external screen for my WindowsXP using Remote Desktop Viewer. The trick is to use ZoneScreen to create a 'virtual' monitor and VNC to copy the contents from one pc to another. I have the VNC client on read-only and panned complete to the right so the visible area perfectly covers the ZoneScreen-monitor. This works flawless, even thought the total screen is rather big (1024 + 1920 + 1600 x 1200), the 100Mbit LAN handles it just fine, I assume it's smart enough to only send through the 'useful' bits. However, more often than not when I try to go full-screen, it seems a 1600x1200 'square' is assigned to VNC (= (native) resolution of the Ubuntu desktop), but it's not properly positioned at (0, 0) but instead seems to try to put itself somewhere on top of the INSIDE of the non-fullscreen (aka windowed) screen. Hence I keep to see the Ubuntu tool-bar on top of the screen, and part of the windows-screen 'falls of the bottom'. Sometimes it helps when I make the windowed version a lot smaller and then try to move it around the screen randomly and try to go full-screen (F11) again : it might jump into the correct position, but it usually takes a lot of tries... I have not found any logic in it (yet), but it seems the offset is (almost) always the top-left position of the windowed-version. Another trick is to move the VNC application to another desktop and try there... again, sometimes it works, often it doesn't. Hope this makes sense, I've included 2 screenshots to make it a bit more clear. Feel free to ask for more details via email. Thanks for making the effort to look at this ! [Bug 391533] Re: Application windows do not restore to last known position.
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 124315 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315 This may not be entirely within the window manager space, some involvement with the toolkit may be required too... I do believe this is a genuine problem, and by passing the buck and saying that it is simply the applications issue, you are making yourself part of the problem as described by Denny. The window manager currently has a set of placement algorithms which put windows in logical places on screen... however, Windows has solved this problem with a solution which works very well (better??) in a specific set of circumstances... I would not like to see every window automatically placed where it was before, but it would be a great option to have for certain classes of window (possibly needs an extra flag from the app via the toolkit?).. For example, within an application, opening a particular dialog repeatedly, you would want the window to be placed the same way each time... certain apps might do well to be restored to wherever they were when they were last used... I really believe that this is NOT wholly the responsibility of the app, or any individual layer... but it would be good to have a framework for the app to specify how placement of a window should be handled, to allow this kind of functionality to become standard. -- Application windows do not restore to last known position. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391533 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu (via bug 124315). -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is
The aim of the paper cuts project is to improve the usability of the Ubuntu desktop. What this debate reflects is that there are many ways to solve this problem; what the design team aims to do is resolve these discussions by conducting research with a broader audience. In order to use something a person does not need to have an accurate picture of how it works, they need to be able to predict the effect a particular action will have. Mental models don't need to be correct to be useful. I recommend Compress because all the participants could predict what that might do and why they might use it and terms like Archive and Zip were less clear to people. To quote one participant: I know what a zip is on my jacket? Based on research, the solution from the design team is: * In the context menu rename Create Archive to Compress... * The subsequent dialog box should be re-titled to read: Create compressed file * The input box on the dialog box should be re-labelled from 'Archive' to 'Filename' What I would really like to do is heal 100 paper cuts for Karmic - let's try this now and, if usability testing shows this is not the optimum solution we can improve it in Karmic +1. -- Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

@Sebastien : the screenshot behaviour seems a design decision and not a bug True, but as we speak about usability issues, not only technical bugs are in the scope... users usually don't care about things out of their directory and showing those by default would be confusing Maybe. Or maybe not. We could also say Users usually like to know where they are when navigating, and showing them they are in the home directory, itself located at the root of the filesystem would help a lot...
