[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
@J Nice idea. It would only really work if the panel is available. Without the panel, would we just go back to the way its been done previously? I like the idea of displaying the information in the left panel, it would make make the panel much more useful. @Cheiron Again a good idea. But a balance would need to be reached between the size of the target. If its too small, it could be very irritating; if its too large, it could get in the way and lead to clicking by mistake. @ Everyone I personally like the information panel idea, as it nicely separates the tasks of editing and browsing folders. Its most definitely the 'gnome way' of doing things. Gnome at its heart is a minimalist DE, and thats what I like; it doesn't try to be too flashy. Those coming from windows may not actually want more of the same. If they are moving away from windows, they want better, and smarter solutions. These new ideas could lead to a long drawn out debate, and I just hope that we are able to see something concrete in time for Karmic. Is there anything that can be done, which is fast, does not require much work, and would not run the risk of creating more bugs? Can someone, with better knowledge, give us an idea of which of the ideas would be the quickest to implement and which would take the longest and whether any of the ideas could make it for at least Karmic +1? I'd guess that adding F2, next to rename folder, in the right-click menu, would be the quickest? [Bug 29894] Re: can't take screenshot when menu on panel is opened
Something interesting that I found... One thing that does work: Open Firefox, Hit Alt-F (To open file menu), then hit Alt-Tab. As soon as Alt is hit, the menu closes so the following -Tab, -E, -V, etc. still work. I assume this is a work-around that Firefox programmed in? Why can't that also be added in for all GTK+ programs? If a menu is open, and the Alt key is pressed/held down, the menu exits. [Bug 367136] [NEW] xset -r causes loss of control of keyboard
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: xorg Using Ubuntu 9.04 64-Bit. xset -r or xset r off (see man xset) is a command which is supposed to turn off the keyboard repeat. However, when I run this in Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit, it causes an endless stream of enter key inputs instead (as if you just held down the enter key). I've tried this on two different machines with the same results. Here are the steps to reproduce: 1) Open two terminal windows 2) In the first terminal window, enter xset r (no quotes) but don't hit the enter key yet. You'll need this command already typed in to gain control of the keyboard later when the X server goes into a loop of enter keys making typing of commands in the terminal at that point otherwise impossible. 3) In the second terminal window, enter xset -r (no quotes) and hit the enter key. Observe that instead of the repeat being turned off for the keyboard, a steady rapid stream of enter keypresses occur which makes typing into anything impossible because the enter keystrokes are interfering with whatever you are typing. 4) Now go back to the first terminal window and press enter to execute the command xset r which will turn the repeat back on. At this point, you should have regained control of keyboard input again. ** Affects: xorg-server Importance: Unknown Status: Confirmed ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Status: Confirmed -- xset -r causes loss of control of keyboard https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/367136 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 393051] Re: Unable to mount any media in nautilus.
In the meantime - for those who do not know and need an external drive while testing karmic - you can mount your drive by hand: sudo -s mkdir /media/volumename mount /dev/sdb1 /media/volumename where /dev/sdb1 is replaced by your partition, and volumename is a directory of your choice. To see what partitions are on a device, you can do tail -f /var/log/messages and *then* connect the drive. In the log you will see information on the drive itself including a list of partitions. [Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications
I have the same problem with a lot of applications, and things like file-open windows, etc. In many cases the window size is smaller than I set before. It is VERY ANNOYING for me, when an application's window doesn't keep the size and position I adjusted, and I have to adjust it again and again and again It is HORRIBLE!!! I get really angry even thinking about it!! Please try to imagine this situation: I have a huge monitor (1920 x 1200), and when I want to open a file, a small window appears which shows sometimes 5 percent of my files in a folder. Than I have two options: scrolling a lot, or resizing the window. Resizing would be better, if it would be kept for the next time. When I use the computer it takes at least 25% of my time always resizing windows! WHY are my settings not kept??? Why isn't there any option to keep my settings??? [Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown
OK here is the update. After the poweroff and restart the Toshiba logo comes up (it's a Toshiba Tecra A9) and then it goes straight to booting linux without ever showing the grub menu as described above. However, it seems that grub IS actually running invisibly when the Toshiba logo is showing but it just can't get hold of the screen. I tested this by using the down arrow and pressing enter to boot into windows instead of linux. So, whatever part of the system attempts to display the grub menu to the screen doesn't work after a poweroff (-P), but does work after a restart (-r). Any ideas how to tackle this? [Bug 355970] Re: jaunty nautilus Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) -- jaunty nautilus Segmentation fault (core dumped) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355970 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
