[Bug 67844] Re: change file encoding on the fly
Actually, for me it only detects UTF-8 and Latin-15. I even tried to open a KOI8-U text file on gedit, and it was rendered as Latin-15. Perhaps it depends on the locale? While a fix is released, here's a workaround: 1- Open the text file with Firefox. 2- Select the correct character encoding. 3- Copy the text and re-save the file as UTF-8. Anyway, I do think this should be a normal bug with normal priority - one should not have to resort to a full-fledged web browser (one which is a resource hog, even) to read a simple text file. -- change file encoding on the fly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 104957] Re: users with no password can't log in with gdm
Sorry, I thought I had been explicit enough. The present bug deals with users with an empty password (using 'passwd -d'), while bug 393854 is about users actually having a password, but GDM not checking it to log in. In the present bug, GDM is handling the problem fine, we only need our PAM config files allow for empty password on graphical ttys: for now, they are not considered as secure ttys, while they should (above discussion). In the other bug, we need our PAM config file for GDM to allow members of the nopasswdlogin group to log in without any further authentication. So nothing related in the way we should fix those, while they target related use cases. Hope this helps. -- users with no password can't log in with gdm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/104957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 150187] Re: Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files.
The low quality printing in your PDF is a different bug. This bug is about Type 3 fonts being printed as a bitmap. The PDF you attached has no Type 3 fonts. The reason pages 1 and 4 of your PDF are printed as a bitmap are: - Firefox is using cairo operators that are not natively supported by PDF on page 1 and 4. I don't think there is any reason that Firefox needs to use anything other than CAIRO_OPERATOR_OVER when printing so I consider this a bug in Firefox. - As a result cairo embeds a fallback image in the PDF for the region drawn with operators not supported by PDF. But the bounding box of the PDF pattern used to draw the fallback image is set to the page size instead of the image size. This is a bug in cairo. - When poppler is used to print the PDF via the cairo backend the image becomes a full page image due to the pattern bounding box being set to the page size. -- Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Guys, do not quarrel over workaround. ;-) All text editors like for example geany, leafpad, kate or nano may be used. As I wrote, I used geany to change file encoding. Worked fine. [Bug 393158] Re: Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename
** Description changed: When the user types a filename, if he puts a forbidden symbol (like / for example) in the name, when clicking on the Save button there's a really obscure message coming out: instead of saying one or more character you have typed are not admitted , or the symbol / is not admitted in a file name, it says (approximately, I'm translating from the italian version) THE FOLDER'S CONTENT CANNOT BE VISUALIZED: error in executing stat of file /home/john/Desktop/xx : no file or directory. - I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. I made the tests on two PCs, both running Jaunty. + I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed. I made the tests on two PCs running Jaunty and on a virtual machine running Karmic. However, my opinion is that the message that shows when the typed path is incorrect is not useful for those who don't already know the mechanism: that would consequently compromise usability. I think it would be useful to replace the present message with something like The path you have typed is not correct: please check the directory tree , or The / symbol can be only used to head to a subdirectory, not in a filename: if you wanted to set a subdirectory for your file, please check the directory tree. I think this is very confusing for the newcomer: if it's easily fixable, it should be fixed in Karmic. -- Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/393158 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
Re: [Bug 392956] Re: Screen dimming behavior fails to recognize inactivity
Yes, sorry about that! The autoresponse is still set to Jaunty. Since the upstream developers are working on version 2.27+ (karmic), and Ubuntu generally would only fix security flaws in stable releases (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates), the best way to get this fixed would be to triage it in Karmic, file the upstream report for the Karmic version of GPM, and get the fix into the next release of Ubuntu. This is especially true since HAL is being deprecated in favor of DeviceKit-power in Karmic. [Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is
I've asked a few non-technical users (mostly Windows users), all were confused by the term compress. They can grasp the extract idea, but unless you're technical or learned to used zip at a time were space was dear (floppies, small hard drives) you'll have no idea what compression can mean on a computer. People I asked had ideas of physically compressing stuff, like hydraulic presses and the stuff, and it never related to any space-saving idea, even less on anything that could make sense in a computer. One also has to note that zip has long been supplanted by RAR on the Windows side (other OS users never really favored zip, which has bad compression ratio). RAR labels the files it produces as _archives_ , not any other term. There's also self-extracting archives on the Windows side, they end by .exe and are called self-extracting _archives_ So my guess is we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot in order to appease a small fraction of our userbase. There might be a better word than archives, but up now that's the only descriptive name people are used to, including on Windows (discarding the ones that only know the files by their extensions in Windows, which we can't do much about, since zip isn't really used any more on the Internet, and RAR, like zip, doesn't mean much for people that don't know those extensions). As for compress, it's far more confusing (you're focusing on the not-so- simple compression process, while for archives people can far more easily grasp the idea that some files are grouped inside a wrapping). Also, when people extract a file, they can clearly see the idea that some files are inside another one - have fun explaining the idea that the same files were also compressed ;) -- Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
