Re: [Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-07-01 Thread Andruk
I think that as long as it's included and used in Ubuntu, we should
fix it. It's a completely trivial fix anyway. Immediately perfect
and improve the things you can, work carefully and thoughtfully on the
things you can't.

I don't understand the purpose of your request. Jaunty uses a different
version of F-Spot. I'm not interested in how F-Spot works under Jaunty.
The bug I'm reporting is for F-Spot on Hardy Heron 8.04. There are no
steps to reproduce the bug - it simply crashes when started.

[Bug 67844] Re: change file encoding on the fly

2009-07-01 Thread Fibonacci
Actually, for me it only detects UTF-8 and Latin-15. I even tried to
open a KOI8-U text file on gedit, and it was rendered as Latin-15.
Perhaps it depends on the locale?

While a fix is released, here's a workaround:
1- Open the text file with Firefox.
2- Select the correct character encoding.
3- Copy the text and re-save the file as UTF-8.

Anyway, I do think this should be a normal bug with normal priority -
one should not have to resort to a full-fledged web browser (one which
is a resource hog, even) to read a simple text file.

[Bug 394148] [NEW] Change icon in launcher not obvious

2009-07-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Useability issue.

It is hard to determine that you can change the icon for e.g. a launcher
by right clicking icon - Properties - basic tab and then clicking the
icon. The visual feedback when hoovering over the icon does not stand
out very well as the icon covers most of the widget.

I would suggest:

* Enhancing the visual feedback - perhaps adding a hoover text. Or add Click
icon to change text in dialog.
or
* Add change icon link/button.

The hoover text would probably make the functionality discoverable.

[Bug 393804] Re: Does not delete files located on SMB drive

2009-07-01 Thread Daneken
* Is this reproducible?
Yes, I have had this issue since my first Intrepid install. My files are stored
on a 1TB Ethernet drive connected to my network - its OS is some form of Linux.
It is a permanent issue

RB Will scan for files, but only when I use Import Folder - watch my
folder is turned on, but it wont update.

RB - when deleting a file in RB the red 'deleted' icon appears, but when
restarting RB, the file is still there - listed in RB and also on the
network drive

RB - when updating file info from RB ERROR saving song information -
file already exists. This song info update is via properties of the file
in RB

* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

I can only presume that a Network attached file storage and a Jaunty
Notebook accessing it will reproduce the problem. (WD My Book is the
storage device)

* What error do you get?

No error while deleting. It just doesn't delete. Error only appears when
trying to update song info via properties

[Bug 104957] Re: users with no password can't log in with gdm

2009-07-01 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Sorry, I thought I had been explicit enough.

The present bug deals with users with an empty password (using 'passwd
-d'), while bug 393854 is about users actually having a password, but
GDM not checking it to log in. In the present bug, GDM is handling the
problem fine, we only need our PAM config files allow for empty password
on graphical ttys: for now, they are not considered as secure ttys,
while they should (above discussion). In the other bug, we need our PAM
config file for GDM to allow members of the nopasswdlogin group to log
in without any further authentication.

So nothing related in the way we should fix those, while they target
related use cases. Hope this helps.

[Bug 394217] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon does not display notification bubbles on volume changes

2009-07-01 Thread Adrian Roman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

According to a discussion with Matthew Paul Thomas, when changing the
volume from a script, gnome-settings-daemon should display the
corresponding notification bubble.

The script I am using relies on amixer to change the volume. It is
called by irexec when lirc detects the volume buttons keypresses on the
remote control. Here's an example script:

The idea doesn't seem a good one, things closing automatically before
you have time to use those and not letting you any obvious way to get
the option back are rather confusing for users, those bars are also
limited to devices and don't take that much screen space, you should
perhaps rename the directories on the device, if you really want to
avoid those

[Bug 150187] Re: Evince has very bad quality when printing pdf files.

2009-07-01 Thread Adrian Johnson
The low quality printing in your PDF is a different bug. This bug is
about Type 3 fonts being printed as a bitmap. The PDF you attached has
no Type 3 fonts.

The reason pages 1 and 4 of your PDF are printed as a bitmap are:

- Firefox is using cairo operators that are not natively supported by
PDF on page 1 and 4. I don't think there is any reason that Firefox
needs to use anything other than CAIRO_OPERATOR_OVER when printing so I
consider this a bug in Firefox.

- As a result cairo embeds a fallback image in the PDF for the region
drawn with operators not supported by PDF. But the bounding box of the
PDF pattern used to draw the fallback image is set to the page size
instead of the image size. This is a bug in cairo.

- When poppler is used to print the PDF via the cairo backend the image
becomes a full page image due to the pattern bounding box being set to
the page size.

[Bug 382118] Re: Drop Downs don't disappear (f-spot, rhythmbox, etc).

2009-07-01 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The idea doesn't seem a good one, things closing automatically before
you have time to use those and not letting you any obvious way to get
the option back are rather confusing for users, those bars are also
limited to devices and don't take that much screen space, you should
perhaps rename the directories on the device if you really want to avoid
those

[Bug 394248] [NEW] task view not showing correct owner

2009-07-01 Thread mailman1175
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have two accounts I use in Evolution: Personal (blue) and Business
(red). I primarily use the Tasks function for Business. When I create a
new task in the Business group, it's still highlighted blue. I don't
know if this is default for all tasks, or if it's a bug in highlighting
tasks with the correct group owner. If the former, it would be nice to
be able to see which group owned each task; if the latter, well... a fix
would be great, wouldn't it?

[Bug 67844] Re: change file encoding on the fly

2009-07-01 Thread Peter Surňák
Guys, do not quarrel over workaround. ;-)
All text editors like for example geany, leafpad, kate or nano may be used. As
I wrote, I used geany to change file encoding. Worked fine.
You do not even need any other app to solve the issue, gedit is just enoug. But
it forces you to do unexpected things and thus making gedit user-unfriendly. :-(

You can choose encoding when opening file from inside gedit (open file
form). And then save it using gedit as whatever encoding you need.

[Bug 382118] Re: special folder bars should be possible to close

2009-07-01 Thread Pieter
My acer aspire one netbook has 2 sd-slots. 1 of those sd-slot always
contains a sd-card and is mounted as /home/username/Documents. When
browsing that directory the bars are always visible.

And they DO take too much screen space, especially when more than one
program is listed (music And images = 1 line for f-spot and 1 line for
rhythmbox).

There is no obvious way to remove the bar, how about the following:
* An option in gconf.
* A checkbox in the bar (don't show this)
* An item in the help that tells me what directory names not to use to avoid
those bars.

Could you please tell me WHAT triggers those bars exactly?
Is it a directory called dcim?
is it files named p10*jpg, *.jpg, *.png, *.gif, img0*.jpg ?
Is it files named *.mp3 *.flac *.ogg ?

2009-07-01 Thread Sense Hofstede
After an update for udev earlier today the problem seems to have gone.
Sound works again and the error isn't raised by Apport. Hal, however,
still refuses to run, 'sudo /etc/init.d/hal status' tells me so.

Maybe it was indeed related to udev, I'll keep my eyes open for
returning symptoms.

[Bug 394266] [NEW] Very bad quality from evince printing pages which have been printed to pdf using firefox

2009-07-01 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

Using karmic and firefox-3.0, I printed a pdf of the following web page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subgroup

(permanent link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Subgroupoldid=296077109)

If I print this pdf with evince (even printing to a pdf file) I get
terrible quality and pages are converted to images. If I print it with
okular, I get a good quality document, however a mathematical formula is
obscured (bottom of page 3). In evince the formula is visible.

Here is the pdf printed from firefox:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28547865/groups.pdf

The reprint from evince:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28547874/a.pdf

The reprint from Okular:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28547885/b.pdf

On this other bug report:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/150187 Adrian
Johnson explained:

[Bug 393158] Re: Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename

2009-07-01 Thread ale-sandro
** Description changed:

When the user types a filename, if he puts a forbidden symbol (like / for
example) in the name, when clicking on the Save button there's a really
obscure message coming out: instead of saying one or more character you have
typed are not admitted , or the symbol / is not admitted in a file name,
it says (approximately, I'm translating from the italian version) THE FOLDER'S
CONTENT CANNOT BE VISUALIZED: error in executing stat of file
/home/john/Desktop/xx : no file or directory.
- I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder
and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the
correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed. I
made the tests on two PCs, both running Jaunty.
+ I tried with Openoffice.org, Gedit, Archive manager, Brasero, Sound recorder
and Gimp, and they all have the same behaviour. The only one to give the
correct response has been Nautilus which told me that / is not allowed. I
made the tests on two PCs running Jaunty and on a virtual machine running
Karmic.

However, my opinion is that the message that shows when the typed path is
incorrect is not useful for those who don't already know the mechanism: that
would consequently compromise usability.
I think it would be useful to replace the present message with something like
The path you have typed is not correct: please check the directory tree , or
The / symbol can be only used to head to a subdirectory, not in a filename:
if you wanted to set a subdirectory for your file, please check the directory
tree.

I think this is very confusing for the newcomer: if it's easily fixable, it
should be fixed in Karmic.

Re: [Bug 392956] Re: Screen dimming behavior fails to recognize inactivity

2009-07-01 Thread Scott Howard
Yes, sorry about that! The autoresponse is still set to Jaunty. Since
the upstream developers are working on version 2.27+ (karmic), and
Ubuntu generally would only fix security flaws in stable releases
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates), the best way to get
this fixed would be to triage it in Karmic, file the upstream report
for the Karmic version of GPM, and get the fix into the next release
of Ubuntu. This is especially true since HAL is being deprecated in
favor of DeviceKit-power in Karmic.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 394293] [NEW] evolution - in New/Edit Appointmet window, start time and end time selection does not work properly

2009-07-01 Thread abePdIta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

[sorry for my English]
While creating a new Appointment or editing an existing one, when you select a
value from the drop-down menu to choose the time (hours and minutes) of the
appointment, that value does not appear in the proper place (see screen-shoots)
and the appointment will be saved at midnight.
The same problem occurs with the duration of the appointment: so the
appointment will be saved as follows:
Start time: 00.00
End time: 00.00

For this reason I run in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/248984 too.

I'm surprised to be the first one to report this bug.. does it happen to
me only?

I have an Italian locale, as you can see. May the problem be related to
this?

Anyway, thank you very much for your work on free software! =)

[Bug 393158] Re: Incoherent warning message when inserting a forbidden symbol in filename

2009-07-01 Thread ale-sandro
@mac_v: I repeated the tests on Karmic and the feedback it gave is the same it
was on Jaunty.
I'm trying to figure out why you didn't have any warning message but my karmic
installation broke, so I can't do anything until I have some time to fix it...
more feedback to come, bye :-)

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2009-07-01 Thread Loïc Martin
I've asked a few non-technical users (mostly Windows users), all were
confused by the term compress. They can grasp the extract idea, but
unless you're technical or learned to used zip at a time were space
was dear (floppies, small hard drives) you'll have no idea what
compression can mean on a computer. People I asked had ideas of
physically compressing stuff, like hydraulic presses and the stuff, and
it never related to any space-saving idea, even less on anything that
could make sense in a computer.

One also has to note that zip has long been supplanted by RAR on the
Windows side (other OS users never really favored zip, which has bad
compression ratio). RAR labels the files it produces as _archives_ , not
any other term.

There's also self-extracting archives on the Windows side, they end by
.exe and are called self-extracting _archives_

So my guess is we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot in order to
appease a small fraction of our userbase. There might be a better word
than archives, but up now that's the only descriptive name people are
used to, including on Windows (discarding the ones that only know the
files by their extensions in Windows, which we can't do much about,
since zip isn't really used any more on the Internet, and RAR, like zip,
doesn't mean much for people that don't know those extensions). As for
compress, it's far more confusing (you're focusing on the not-so-
simple compression process, while for archives people can far more
easily grasp the idea that some files are grouped inside a wrapping).
Also, when people extract a file, they can clearly see the idea that
some files are inside another one - have fun explaining the idea that
the same files were also compressed ;)

[Bug 394319] [NEW] Can't uninstall one game without uninstalling them all

2009-07-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

1. In Add/Remove Applications, find Iagno, and uncheck its checkbox.

What happens: A message appears saying Iagno is part of a software
collection. If you remove Iagno, you will remove all bundled
applications as well. The list of games to be removed includes
Tetravex, Chess, Four-in-a-Row, Mahjongg, Mines, FreeCell, Blackjack,
Aisleriot, Nibbles, Robots, Tali, Klotski, Sudoku, Iagno, Gnometris,
Five or More, and Same GNOME.

What should happen: You should be able to uninstall one or some of the
games without uninstalling all of them.

Presumably the way to fix this problem is to package the games
separately, with gnome-games perhaps becoming a metapackage that depends
on the best few games.
