I'm a little disconcerted that this bug has been around for so long, and yet that it is still marked as low priority. Sure, it's not a crasher, but any application that is using 100% CPU is a big problem, in my opinion. The solution for this seems pretty obvious and easy to program. I have the same problem in 9.04. You can't enter a blank password, because the settings editor will not replace an existing password with a blank password. You used to be able to fix this be deleting and recreating the entire account and being careful not to edit the password. Now though (recent updates) it seems to stick 'guest' in as the default username and password if you don't set them. So no I am screwed, I can't use NM to connect to 3G connections any more, simply because I can't set a blank password! The usage of the internal IPs _can_ be what you want, if you want to talk to people in you internal network. If your sip provider allows, this is a nice feature. I upgraded my 2 Ubuntu systems to KDE 4:4.2.95-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa1. This problem reappeared on one of those systems (but not both). I still have this problem on jaunty I'm using gnome-screensaver and the issue occurs with the solarwinds screensaver (that's not to say it doesn't occur with other specific screensavers). The screensaver freezes and prevents any interaction - so it's impossible to login. Logging in via ssh and running kill -9 solarwinds causes the login prompt to appear. Immediate repair of issue by uninstalling ubunutone-client sudo apt-get remove ubuntuone-client - removes ubuntuone-client-gnome as well. I suspected this application was the culprit before this. I killed the primary process and the 'daemon' that also ran assuming that if they were active on the system it wouldn't affect the system. This didn't work. I would also add that whatever happens affects the desktop. I run conky and when the segfault happens it wipes the icons off the desktop and elevates (lack of a better description) the conky window to a foreground window. Other applications display behind the conky panel. Not sure it's of any value to know that. I see a similar effect here. I had been running with desktop effects disabled (metacity), and then re-enabled them (switching to compiz). it seems that gnome-session is continually respawning metacity continuously, chewing up lots of CPU. metacity fails quickly because compiz is already running, but it gets started again immediately. I can confirm with Alvin, insofar as I did not install any additional codecs (knowingly). Granted I haven't gone so far as to test a fresh install, so there exists a possibility that additional codecs were available to me as a side-effect of installing other packages on top of the default ubuntu install. Here's what I got (all enabled): * Speex 8/16 kHz, PCMA, PCMU, G726-16/24/32/40, GSM, MS-GSM, G722 Ekiga can connect to the Echo Test and work as expected when the local machine's MTU is set to 1500. Funny things happen when the the local machine's MTU is set too high (common on machines that are on a local gigabit network but also connect to the Internet.) I take exception with the view that Ekiga must honor the user's wish to use whatever codecs the user specifies. The view by itself is justified and agreeable, but ignores the ultimate wish of every user of every program ever in existence -- the user wants the program to actually work. If those two ideals happen to collide, the latter should take precedence over the former. Having said that, I don't think the following would be a problem: * Offer a checkbox that will offer to limit UDP packet sizes to the standard size found on the Internet in the same place where users can enable/disable codecs. * Warn users that this may disable the use of some codecs the user has chosen to use which might result in not being able to connect to some SIP servers/peers. * When the user makes a call and is unable to negotiate the use of a codec with the SIP server/peer, tell them so. Don't tell them user not available. That's how this thread started in the first place. Tell them with as much specificity as you can -- unable to negotiate codec with server or something similar. While Ekiga gets TCP support, there very well could be some servers that are UDP-only. This is the only reason I'm going into the diatribe. I've seen too many bug reports and release notes for SIP-related software/firmware. For varying reasons, shortcuts get taken. To the user, if one implementation works and another does not, the non-working implementation looks broken even when the non-working implementation is not at fault. And last but not least, I just want to make sure that it's understood that I'm not holding anyone personally responsible for my gripes with Ekiga -- Yannick or otherwise. Re-assigning back to Metacity. It seems Metacity sets SmRestartImmediately when it first runs, and normally sets SmRestartIfRunning on a clean exit, which is perfectly okay. However, the code path which is triggered on startup when Metacity can't control the display (if another WM is running), does not set SmrestartIfRunning before exiting, which can trigger this endless loop of restarting. Fixing that should stop the endless looping. However, this was also the case in Jaunty, so there must be another underlying issue with the newer version which needs some more investigating. Either there is a code path which is triggered when you run compiz --replace which causes Metacity to exit before setting SmRestartIfRunning, or something calls meta_restart (), which spawns a new Metacity independently of the session manager, which then exits immediately after setting SmRestartImmediately, triggering the endless loop mentioned above. Yeap. As far as I know, amd64 architecture switches on-the-fly to i386, but once you are there all the execution should remain 32 bits. That is why some 32 bit applications can run perfectly on amd64, just stuff everything on the ELF executable, including all dynamic libraries and you are done. If you want to stay modular and use the dynamic linking process, you should feed all the 32 bits libs the app will ever need. It seems libgail.so is not part (yet?) of the ia32-libs, though. I also experienced a crash when attempting to listen to this particular radio station. In my case, the stream didn't even start (not sure if I couldn't connect, or lacked the proper codec), but RB became unresponsive after attempting to play the stream. I also had to forcibly kill RB. I did confirm that rhythmbox did not crash when listening to another internet radio station ( http://ubuntu.hbr1.com:19800/tronic.ogg ) when internet access was turned off, so I suspect there is a problem with RB's handling of .asf streams in general or possibly just with the particular stream ( mmsh://220.247.227.6/live?MSWMExt=.asf ) in question. All other songs get not scrobbled. It starts to scrobble again (sometimes) when i change the band, but just another single song :-/ Scrobbling works fine here with other players like amarok / songbird. Now, am I to undestand that, at least in my case, the error message Gtk-Message: Failed to load module gail: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libgail.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 was caused by libgail being a 32bit library and not compatible with amd64 architecture? amd64 Linux kernels support ia32 processes running in 32bit compatibility mode. From the point-of-view of the 32bit process, it's pretty much the same as running under a 32bit (i386 architecture) kernel. (This is now called legacy mode on). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_mode http://developer.amd.com/pages/123200367.aspx So yeah, when the dynamic linker in a 32bit process tries to load a shared library compiled for a different architecture, it returns an error, because it detected that the library is for a different architecture than the process. I'm having this same issue with lab computers I'm administering. In both cases (so far), the commonalities are: - the systems run 9.04 - the home directory for the user is mounted via CIFS (samba) from a fileserver Notably, there are around 5 or so 9.04 systems in the lab -- which do not mount the home directory via CIFS -- that do not exhibit this problem. Only the CIFS-mounting systems. My breakthrough in troubleshooting this was to run an strace(1) on the fileserver against the user's smbd process. Looking at this file on disk, it turns out to be a symlink to a file such as /tmp /pulse-6yCwltbxKn5h, the latter which doesn't exist, thus creating a broken symlink situation. So it seems that Pulse gets hung up on this and stalls the entire login process. The workaround for me was to remove the symlink, which would then force a new /tmp/pulse-XXX file to be created with a proper symlink in the user's home directory, and the login would proceed successfully! I've confirmed that this workaround works on both affected systems. Just as a quick addition, both affected machines are running GNOME, and prior to discovering the .pulse/ broken symlink, my previous workaround was to boot the machines in GNOME's fail-safe mode, which seemed to work.
