[Bug 417253] [NEW] Nautilus eats up all available memory after launching an avi file
Public bug reported: I am running Karmic on Dell Inspiron 1721 laptop. I have noticed the following situation lately. I open a folder with an avi file (e.g. a film), and double-click on it to launch. Totem opens up, and I see my memory usage starts growing steadily until reaching 100% in 30s-60s. Surprisingly enough, the process which causes the memory hog is nautilus. Even if I leave nautilus running, nothing crashes, so I am not sure what information could be helpful on this issue. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Nautilus eats up all available memory after launching an avi file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/417253 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus
In response to David Siegel *jaw dropping dumbfoundedness* I really have very few words for your comment and the actions that followed. I have seen very few requests to solve a problem that have simpler or more strait forward solutions. I fail completely to see how your comment has anything to do with this particular bug, and must only conclude that you accidentally commented on, and changed the status of, the wrong bug. Please correct your mistake. :) Thanks. -- Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95853 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 417265] [NEW] Nautilus background image patterns corrupt if background bitmap image is larger than the Nautilus window dimensions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Nautilus has the ability to show a bitmap image as a background of the main body area of a Nautilus window where all your file and directory icons are shown instead of just a plain boring colour. Nautilus includes a number of sample tiled patterns, but you can also use your own. ISSUE: Adding a new bitmap image to use as a background pattern works fine, however if that bitmap image is larger than the Nautilus window (eg: a 1024x768 image used inside a 640x480 window), not only does the bitmap not get tiled properly (the tile size is that of the visible area of the Nautilus window itself), but when the Nautilus window is closed and re-opened and you scroll the window to see file and directory icons that are beyond the visible area of the window, either black or corrupted graphic information appears, eventually followed by the uncorrupted visible area of the pattern graphic again, at the real dimension of the background image, ie: if the background image is 1024x768 and your window is 640x480 in size, then the pattern from pixel 481 to 768 vertically and pixel 641 to 1024 horizontally is corrupted or missing altogether (black), but the pattern then correctly repeats (wraps) at pixel 1025 horizontally, but only for the next 640 pixels before it corrupts again, and wraps vertically at pixel 769, but again only for the next 480 pixels before becoming corrupt again. Under NVidia gfx drivers v180, v185 and v190, the corruption appears to be copied chunks of other formerly used areas of graphics memory, in my case it is mostly chunks of my second display. Under Virtualbox, all I get is black in the corrupted areas. I am using Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 64-bit but have also seen the problem under Jaunty 32-bit as well. Nautilus package version 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2 STEPS TO REPRODUCE (including control demonstration): 1. Open a Nautilus window. 2. Go to the Edit menu and choose Backgrounds and Emblems. 3. In the window that appears, drag one of the stock patterns into the main body of the Nautilus window. The background will change to that pattern. 4. Close Backgrounds and Emblems window and close the Nautilus window. 5. Open the Nautilus window again and navigate to a directory that contains files and/or folders that are too numerous to fit into the one window simultaneously (eg: /bin is an easy place to navigate to for lots of files). 6. Scroll the window to reveal the other files/folders. You will notice that the background tiling seems to look fine. This is because the pattern image dimensions is smaller than the actual Nautilus window dimensions. 7. Go to the Edit menu and choose Backgrounds and Emblems again. 8. This time click the Add a New Pattern button. A file requester appears. 9. Locate any large bitmap image, in any supported format. If you don't have one handy, use the default Jaunty wallpaper located at /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png. 10. Click the Open button and the bitmap will be added to the available list of patterns. 11. Drag that new pattern into the main body area of the Nautilus window. The background will now change to your large bitmap picture. The image, being larger than the window, will be cropped to the Nautilus window size. 12. Close the Backgrounds and Emblems window, but don't close the Nautilus window. 13. Navigate somewhere with lots of files/directories again (eg: /bin) and scroll. Notice that the background wallpaper in the Nautilus window tiles or wraps not at the actual image's dimensions, but the window's dimensions only. There is also no visible corruption of black-only areas in general. 14. Widen the window to see the same problem exhibited horizontally as well. 15. Now close the Nautilus window. 16. Re-open the Nautilus window and navigate back to the same directory you were using before. 17. Scroll again. If you are using NVidia gfx, you will see that the tiling is corrupted beyond the window's dimensions up until you get to the background image's dimensions at which point it tiles properly. The same goes for the horizontal. If you are using Virtualbox with the Virtualbox Additions gfx Driver installed, you just see black instead of corrupted data. Virtualbox with no Additions driver installed exhibits a combination of corruption and black. 18. Make the Nautilus window much larger so that you can see a lot of the image corruption. 19. Now close the Nautilus window while the window is still large in size. 20. Reopen the Nautilus window - it should appear in the last dimensions you closed it at. Note that the background pattern now looks OK - where you saw corruption before there is none, however if you again scroll the window you will see the corruption is again only beyond the boundaries of the current window dimensions. Tested only with NVidia and Virtualbox gfx adapters. Not tested with Intel, ATi or any other gfx chipsets. Tested with various image formats including

I tried the --save-config option and it's strange to note that it only does the thing it's supposed to do (ie save the config file) when you're NOT running it under gnome-terminal itself. If you try and run the command under another terminal emulator (say, xterm or konsole) then the config file is written...but for some reason the command just stays there doing nothing and you will have to use Ctrl+C to break out. gas...@gastly-desktop:~$ gnome-terminal --save-config=foobar ^C The config file has the following contents: #Written by GNOME Terminal 2.26.0 [GNOME Terminal Configuration] Version=1 CompatVersion=1 FactoryEnabled=true Windows= I think the command just pauses when it comes to writing the 'Windows=' line. Well probably.. but it's not a uge problem, since the keys are visible by it... the bigger problem is that you can't set it up through xbacklight or even /sys/video... so.. there is something wrong with the intel gma drivers... so we need to w8 or... check other distros if they maybe figured this out.. i read few posts about fujitsu siemens lappies, and i found that there are some problems but... not so many.. We should just w8 for the 9.10 (maybe) and findout if the bug had been solved ... i'll also try to hack the graphic subsystem and checkout why i can't change the backlight maybe i'll got it to work.. or maybe not.. dunno for now we can just wait ... -- Brightness control doesn't work on Amilo mini UI 3520 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363326 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 417281] [NEW] Nautilus/gvfs uses up 100 % CPU and grays out when playing HD movie files
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When watching HD movie files, nautilus uses up an inordinate amount of CPU and eventually grays out and becomes totally unresponsive, even if mplayer (which never uses more than 2-4% of CPU, thanks to VDPAU) is closed. When I'm watching a 700 MB x264-encoded movie, CPU usage is about 70 % for 20 seconds before it goes back down again. But when I'm watching a 7 GB x264-encoded movie, nautilus CPU usage goes up to 100% - and stays there, whatever I do, untill I kill the process. This reminds me of the symptoms we used to see back in Intrepid, I think, when gvfs was being implemented. That's why I suspect that gvfs may be the culprit here, as well. 1. Karmic - 9.10. 2. Nautilus: 1:2.27.4-0ubuntu6; gvfs: 1.3.4-0ubuntu1 3. Nothing much. Insignificant CPU usage, as with Jaunty (0 % on my desktop). 4. Nautilus CPU usage goes up to 100 % and stays there, eventually forcing me to kill the process. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Nautilus/gvfs uses up 100 % CPU and grays out when playing HD movie files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/417281 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Using gconf-editor, the entry for /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/applicat...@pdf has no keys. This is also true for any other thumbnailer for pdf, postscript, or dvi. [Bug 309778] Re: KDE always associates *.jar with the zip mime type
Same problem here since at least 8.10 - so I tried the same under OpenSuse based KDE 4.3 LiveCD - xdg-mime didn't give any output at all an kmimetypefinder gave the same results as David said but with the accuracy of 100 for -f - so in Dolphin the file is correctly associated with .jar. Same results in Mandriva 2009 Spring and Fedora 11 but here the kmimetypefinder command doesn't accept -c or -f and just gives application/x-java-archive (accuracy 100). On rigth click Properties all the three also show Type: Java-Archive und below the additional entry Content: Zip archive. I have lost personal interest in this bug, and can no longer test it easily. I have not learned any more Perl, but examination of the routine mentioned above (gst_network_ensure_loopback_statichost) in a modern version seems to show that the bug is still present (both code paths alias hostname to localhost, and there is no check for other appearances of hostname, as far as I can read Perl). Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in eog. [Bug 409621] Re: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. During on a FreeNX server suring a session.
Adding the regression-update tag as the bug appeared with 3.9-0ubuntu2 in jaunty-updates. Downgrading that single package to 3.9-0ubuntu1 solves the issue without needing any kind of gconf configuration. That command will revert to a working libxklavier12: apt-get install --reinstall libxklavier12=3.9-0ubuntu1 It must be noted that the reverting to that version will make dynamic changes of keyboard stop working. It's also probably a good idea of holding that package to that specific version until we get a fixed package using: echo libxklavier12 hold | dpkg --set-selections ** Tags added: regression-update -- The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. [Bug 411042] Re: application-specific volume control affects master volume
i have just checked this on my system which is fully updated, and i noticed this while ago. i have done some investigative work with regard to this to fine out when it does it. when you turn the application volume up, the master volume level changes to match the application volume. if you reduced the app volume level the master stays where it is. the affect is worse when using the volume control within the app itself for example i tried totem. pa volume control stated that master volume at 50%, app volume at 40% and within the player the volume was set also at 50% changed the volume from within the app itself to 54% and now pa volume control states that app volume jumped to 81% and master volume jumped also to 81%. so changing the volume from within totem by 4% inceased the app volume by 41% and master volume by 31%. my view is the app volume stated in pa volume control and gome volume control should be the same as in the app itself so this doesn't happen. -- application-specific volume control affects master volume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/411042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins
I think this is a huge issue, especially for people coming from Windows or Mac to Ubuntu, and wants to use Ubuntu on their laptop. It's a hassle to have type in a password at every start-up. I think the best way to handle this would be to have a small checkbox in the password prompt box that says something like Don't ask for this password next time and add something about how this might be less secure, and learn more-link to a help page. Checking the box makes available to all users enabled, as Tor Klingberg suggests. (Or some other solution that let's new users easily bypass the password prompt right after installing Ubuntu). In some settings keeping this secure is the right choice, but for most users using autologin they choose convience over security. -- libpam-keyring broken on autologins https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137247 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 411042] Re: application-specific volume control affects master volume
@terry_gardener: This behaviour is deliberate (except for the Totem thing; that might be a real bug). It's called flat volumes, and, incidentally, changing the line in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to flat-volumes = no turns it off. The new way it's working is, in my opinion, slightly more logical. Look here for a description of how it should work now: https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio-discuss/2009-August/004786.html And look here for discussion of this feature in Ubuntu: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2009-August/009227.html Personally, I'll disable this feature and I don't think it should be included in Karmic without at least an easy way to disable (and I mean a GUI, not changing some obscure parameter in some text configuration file you need root privileges to edit). Plus, in my opinion, to be useful, this feature needs at least a way to set the maximum volume so that applications wouldn't be able to go beyond it. Other than that, I think it's a simplification of the volume logic which should be encouraged, provided it doesn't reduce the usability. -- application-specific volume control affects master volume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/411042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 301035] Re: Place an Ubuntu icon/emblem on the system partition
I agree with this suggestion as it will help new users understand which partition they are working on. I also agree with what has built up from this request to detect other filesystems and perhaps the operating systems installed on them. I think different ubuntu partitions (installations) should all have an ubuntu emblem. The one currently running, in other words Filesystem should have a *distinct* ubuntu symbol, symbolizing that it is the running system drive. I like the icon proposed for windows drives/installations, but will this actually detect a system presence or will it simply put that icon on any NTFS/FAT partition? Also, for people using a dual boot mac, perhaps we should put together an icon for when those drives or filesystems are detected. [Bug 417509] [NEW] Bug in Seahorse's remote key search
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: seahorse I firstly published my public key using seahorse but I made an error on one on the email adress of one of my my uids. Then, as the version of seahorse I run (2.26.1) doesn't allow to revoke uids, I used the gpg command line interface to revoke the bad uid, and to send the modified public keyring to the server (gpg.mit.edu). When I searched my name (matthieu) using searhorse's search, I realised it has disappeared from the list (perhaps the manipulations I described above are only a coincidence). I used the cli to search my name (gpg --search-keys matthieu) and I found my keys easily. After a lot of manipulations, I finally understood that seahorse sees me as user attribute packet and not as COUDERT Matthieu : I searched the word matt instead of matthieu and I discovered that I wasn't alone in that case, many other keyring are named like this. You can try : search words of four letters (not those which you think about ;-) ) : e.g. : cora, sieg - there are many people called user attribute packet. I don't know why, but they seem to only appear when I type four letter names. I tried 2.27.1 (built version from http://launchpad.net:~dranger003/+archive/ppa/+build/1128995) : the bug remains. My opinion : I also published a picture of me (and I think this is the real user attribute packet item) : perhaps the search engine is buggy and sees it as the primary uid. I hope this problem will be easy to solve. Thanks for the work you already did. [Bug 387874] Re: Downscrolling should decrease, not increase volume
For this to be addressed, it should be fixed in 9.04. Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 both use different sound applets so what you are seeing in karmic is not a fix, it is a replacement applet. This is a very small bug. If you use your scroll wheel on the applet icon it works fine, but if you click the applet icon and then use the scroll wheel on the volume bar, it is reversed (does not work as expected). [Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons
Matthew, I think where there are (fairly) universally recognised icons for things then they also make sense for actions on menus (e.g. 'play' and back and forward or print). While I understand that the gaps may look unsightly I believe that the benefit in ease of navigation is significant enough to significantly outway the minor appearance issue.
