[Bug 189774] Re: seahorse shows passwords without verification
I see this as a VERY serious security flaw! Given that Empathy Instant Messenger is going to be the default messenger in the next Ubuntu Release, I thought I'd check it out. While setting up my gmail and msn accounts I noticed that it was saving the passwords in the public keyring. It was also giving the familiar quickAllow (Deny,Allow Once, AllowAll) dialog when starting up the program and connecting to these accounts. No prompting for any password to protect the keyring. Given that this was being stored in a public keyring, I wanted to see how easy it was to find these password. I open up sea horse, and hey presto! My passwords to gmail and msn are available for all to see for someone who might be strolling around my workstation/laptop while i'm not there, (if I forget to log out or lock)... using the quickAllow dialog. Now if someone finds my wireless network key, I don't really care in the scheme of things, even if they use my network to commit bad acts, it happens often enough that I'm unlikely to be penalized. However! I and most people have very sensitive information in our webmail accounts and easy access to them is definitely something I'd like to avoid. It looks like the quickAllow dialog is from some common library that both applications call into. Please can this prompt for a password, the same way as critical updates do!!! Re: [Bug 419677] Re: Birthdate info not show wrong unread count
I'll go on birth date issue so, Sorry, I'm not sure it is reproducible. I'm just an ordinary appreciative user, not even IT people. So I can't afford or brave enough to try around with it. Before i guess of this issue, I play with Compiz and it broke. So I back the contact list up and then to do list and then memo and Calender and also copy all .evolution. Then I delete and make new install Ubuntu 9.04 once again. Then move Calender, contact list,to do list and memo and mail back. I do nothing with the old .evolution. When I report the issue (last time), I find that the Calender show some of my contact list birth date but not all of them. When I type this, I do checking it once again and I found all the birth date shown. I try forward, backward and today (using the arrow button) and find that the birth date (violet color) dissapear and back randomly! I believe it is the way to reproduce this issue. This is all I can report now. [Bug 370999] Re: reports 0% until finished, also slowly burning at speed 0.3x or 0.5x
I kept doing some other tests with this, specially regarding the speed. And the speed problem doesn't seem to be from Brasero but from growisofs or wodim. Easily tested by calling growisofs directly, there is no change in the speed. Some external links refer a problem with how the buffer works and how it detects the available memory, but supposedly a fix for that was released not long ago. Still, even passing params to define a size for the buffer had little impact, i noticed a slight increase in speed. Also i noticed a interesting report where someone stated that it might be using wrongly the burn-proof feature of the burners ending in poor quality burns and slowing down the process. Unfortunately all my DVD burners have burn-proof so it was impossible to try out with one without. On the other hand I don't see growisofs outputting anything related to that, so I'm not sure if this can be a problem. -- reports 0% until finished, also slowly burning at speed 0.3x or 0.5x https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370999 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 420488] [NEW] Can't create file/directory on desktop using right mouse button menu if desktop_is_home_dir
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus OS : Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Nautilus version : 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2 (from apt-cache policy nautilus) Doesn't happen when desktop_is_home_dir is set to false. When trying to create a directory/file using the right mouse button menu on the desktop ($HOME, actually, since desktop_is_home_dir is true), the icon of the newly created file is invisible, even though it is listed when calling ls. [Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons
Matthew: Yes, you're right it's a difference in balance - I'm a strong believer in usability being more important than aesthetics; having said that I'd much rather find a solution that satisfies both. I also don't believe I'm on my own, and I don't think everyone agrees that losing the icons improves aesthetics either - I happen to like them. I understand your point about a lot of recognisable icons having separate buttons rather than being on a menu - but my view is that it's in the menus where the icons are important, since searching a menu for the item you want is slow, and this is especially true on complex apps with lots of menu options. I think the big problem with icons is that people think they need to have an icon for everything and you get special ones made up that don't really help or are unclear. (I wonder if anyone has looked at how icons help lightly-visually- impaired users, dyslexics or children navigate - it feels to me they should help them a lot - but I'm no expert). But it doesn't look like it's being used -- robe...@loaner:~$ gnome-terminal --load-config=from-guake robe...@loaner:~$ Though the return is immediate and silent so difficult to tell what's going on. I don't understand Bhaskar how this can be considered to be working even if a couple of lines are written? I'd expect (bearing in mind I've never touched gnome-terminal code) that the terminal would start and allow normal operation, then would write out its config to file when exited. That file could then be referenced with the --load-config switch to create a new terminal with the same setup. Again - I'm not sure what the intent of these switches is so that's probably where it should start (my 2c only). It would be good if someone who knows would say what the options are supposed to do - if they are still relevant. Then we can just get on with fixing it to do the right thing. Re: [Bug 307019] Re: ecryptfs Private directory not mounted after changing password in users-admin
On Thu Aug 27 22:36:16 UTC 2009 Milan Bouchet-Valat wrote: Yeah, I forgot that eCryptfs requires the real password to work. It also needs the old password BTW, so this will never work if the admin changes the password, since he's not likely to know the old one. Thus, I'm not sure it's worth using the backends at all. Ideally, D-Bus could provide us with a secure connection (why isn't that the case?); we could also use a pipe, should be possible but will require some work. Well, pam can provide enough to ecryptfs for it to do it's job, so going through pam would buy us this, and much more as well. I'm not sure about DBus, I think it can provide a connection with some level of security, but I'm also leaning towards a pipe being the best solution. If your goal is to get this fixed for Alpha 6, better go with a client- side solution. Just patch the GUI to call the required program. That may be wise at this point. I'm planning to redesign the GUI in the next cycle, and I may well use something like the about-me dialog to change passwords, so that may help in the middle-term. In the long term, I'm not sure we really need to pass the clear password to the backends, since it would only be useful for eCryptfs, which does not fit in our authentication model since the admin needs the original password. It's more than eCryptfs, it allows us to use pam, which is a neccessity in my eyes, having more than one thing handling all this stuff is going to keep causing problems. I'd eventually go for a solution where eCryptfs is setuid so that anybody (here the GUI) can ask the user the old and change it if it's the right one. No need for other checks, I guess. If the admin changes the password on it own, eCryptfs should show a dialog on start asking for the old password so that it is then changed. Can you find something better? I'm pretty certain that If we just pass the new password to pam then it can do the rest. I belive that using sudo passwd user doesn't break eCryptfs. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash- file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
