[Bug 420345] [NEW] Starters on Gnome-Panel are moved after restart

2009-08-28 Thread Mathias Menzer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Howto reproduce:
- Add a starters to the GNOME-Panel (eg: Applications Accessories
right-click on Terminal Add to Panel )
- A starter gets added right of the existing starters.
- Log Off
- Log On
- The newly added starter now is located between the leftmost starter (Firefox
by default) and the System menu.
When a second starter is added, this one will move between the Firefox starter
and the System menu after a restart and the previosly added starter moved back
to the right side of the rightmost starter.

Expected behaviour:
- New starters are added directly reight of the rightmost existing starter and
stay there until they are moved manually

[Bug 189774] Re: seahorse shows passwords without verification

2009-08-28 Thread DMG46664
I see this as a VERY serious security flaw!

Given that Empathy Instant Messenger is going to be the default
messenger in the next Ubuntu Release, I thought I'd check it out. While
setting up my gmail and msn accounts I noticed that it was saving the
passwords in the public keyring. It was also giving the familiar
quickAllow (Deny,Allow Once, AllowAll) dialog when starting up the
program and connecting to these accounts. No prompting for any password
to protect the keyring.

Given that this was being stored in a public keyring, I wanted to see
how easy it was to find these password. I open up sea horse, and hey
presto! My passwords to gmail and msn are available for all to see for
someone who might be strolling around my workstation/laptop while i'm
not there, (if I forget to log out or lock)... using the quickAllow
dialog.

Now if someone finds my wireless network key, I don't really care in the
scheme of things, even if they use my network to commit bad acts, it
happens often enough that I'm unlikely to be penalized. However! I and
most people have very sensitive information in our webmail accounts and
easy access to them is definitely something I'd like to avoid.

It looks like the quickAllow dialog is from some common library that
both applications call into. Please can this prompt for a password, the
same way as critical updates do!!!

Thank you.

The correct path would be:

~/.gconf/apps/brasero/config/priority/%gconf.xml

Edit the file with values mentioned above. To me, Brasero using wodim
burns unreadable DVDs (wodim 9:1.1.9-1ubuntu1 64-bit).

[Bug 419184] Re: nautilus inhibits logout

2009-08-28 Thread Ryan
Spoke too soon - back to the inhibiting logout message on this shutdown.
The hang usually shows something about sending programs terminate
signals, then just hangs, but will echo keyboard input. Don't think
it's related to the nautilus shutdown/logout issue.

Re: [Bug 370999] Re: reports 0% until finished, also slowly burning at speed 0.3x or 0.5x

2009-08-28 Thread Savvas Radevic
 To me, Brasero using wodim
burns unreadable DVDs (wodim 9:1.1.9-1ubuntu1 64-bit).

1. Try burning at lower speeds (e.g. 2x or 4x)
2. Try with a different dvd burner (I mean your device/hardware, not
the software).

I tried with a DVD-rewritable disc (4.0x maximum speed):
- burning 1.6GB image
- burning 4.3GB image
- burning 3.3GB of data

All successful!

Re: [Bug 419677] Re: Birthdate info not show wrong unread count

2009-08-28 Thread Dhanu
I'll go on birth date issue so,

Sorry, I'm not sure it is reproducible. I'm just an ordinary
appreciative user, not even IT people. So I can't afford or brave enough
to try around with it.

Before i guess of this issue, I play with Compiz and it broke. So I back
the contact list up and then to do list and then memo and Calender and
also copy all .evolution. Then I delete and make new install Ubuntu 9.04
once again. Then move Calender, contact list,to do list and memo and
mail back. I do nothing with the old .evolution. When I report the issue
(last time), I find that the Calender show some of my contact list birth
date but not all of them.

When I type this, I do checking it once again and I found all the birth
date shown. I try forward, backward and today (using the arrow button)
and find that the birth date (violet color) dissapear and back randomly!
I believe it is the way to reproduce this issue. This is all I can
report now.

Thank you for taking care of issues and makes Ubuntu better day by day.

The shutdown thing should have nothing to do with Nautilus. The issue
with the screenshot is fixed in HEAD now Ryan (and is actually the bug

issue, as you can always press log out anyways and that will kill
Nautilus from the session manager.

Ok,

I launched RhythmBox by your command line and he did rebuild the library (but
with no changes, though).
I played Better World / Livin' in the Dark. Another song came after but I
didn't look what it was. I paused it, and quitted by clicking on the X on

Here is the file created that your request.

[Bug 36891] Re: Unable to defocus gnome-menu using keyboard

2009-08-28 Thread tankdriver
Additional, it is not possible to change the sound volume via
PointerOverVolumeIconmousewheel or MediaButtons while a right-click or main
menue is open.
This is annoying.
Is there actually a good reason to make menues forced focus ?
My suggestion: Make the menues only stay on top instead of focus.

[Bug 370999] Re: reports 0% until finished, also slowly burning at speed 0.3x or 0.5x

2009-08-28 Thread Nandox7
I kept doing some other tests with this, specially regarding the speed.
And the speed problem doesn't seem to be from Brasero but from growisofs or
wodim.
Easily tested by calling growisofs directly, there is no change in the speed.

Some external links refer a problem with how the buffer works and how it
detects the available memory, but supposedly a fix for that was released
not long ago. Still, even passing params to define a size for the buffer
had little impact, i noticed a slight increase in speed.

Also i noticed a interesting report where someone stated that it might be using
wrongly the burn-proof feature of the burners ending in poor quality burns and
slowing down the process. Unfortunately all my DVD burners have burn-proof so
it was impossible to try out with one without.
On the other hand I don't see growisofs outputting anything related to that, so
I'm not sure if this can be a problem.

[Bug 283176] Re: gst-launch-0.10 crashes with SIGSEGV in libgstdvdread.so in cur_title_get_chapter_bounds

2009-08-28 Thread Brion Swanson
I'll download the alpha 4 CD of Karmic and try this out using the live
CD since I don't really have the space to install a test version on my
computer and it would be foolish for me to try and upgrade my stable OS
to Karmic at this point.

At this point I've more or less given up on gst-launch0.10 for ripping
DVDs and have moved to mencoder using a script to manage all the various
command-line options.

However, as I'm a developer by profession I understand the desire to see
reported bugs fixed and get their proper testing. I'll comment again
when I get a chance to test out a DVD rip with the latest gst-launch
using Karmic Koala.

Radeon KMS support has been included.

The most drastic improvement i notice[in ATI cards] is the Atunnel.
Maybe it could replace Ant Spotlight. Which is a bit boring.

2009-08-28 Thread TJ
I've modified the title of the bug to more accurately reflect what is

With the first tab running a process that is changing the present
working directory (PWD) as it goes:

cd ~
pwd

pwd

[Bug 420488] [NEW] Can't create file/directory on desktop using right mouse button menu if desktop_is_home_dir

2009-08-28 Thread Naji Mammeri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

OS : Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty
Nautilus version : 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2 (from apt-cache policy nautilus)
Doesn't happen when desktop_is_home_dir is set to false.

When trying to create a directory/file using the right mouse button menu on the
desktop ($HOME, actually, since desktop_is_home_dir is true), the icon of the
newly created file is invisible, even though it is listed when calling ls.
Refreshing nautilus by hitting F5 makes it visible, and allows to rename it.
This is different from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/419058 : the bug I
encounter only happens when creating a file/folder using the right mouse button
menu. Besides, #419058 can't be reproduced on my configuration.

[Bug 407621] Re: (design decision) Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons

2009-08-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
Matthew: Yes, you're right it's a difference in balance - I'm a strong
believer in usability being more important than aesthetics; having said
that I'd much rather find a solution that satisfies both. I also don't
believe I'm on my own, and I don't think everyone agrees that losing the
icons improves aesthetics either - I happen to like them.

I understand your point about a lot of recognisable icons having
separate buttons rather than being on a menu - but my view is that it's
in the menus where the icons are important, since searching a menu for
the item you want is slow, and this is especially true on complex apps
with lots of menu options.

I think the big problem with icons is that people think they need to
have an icon for everything and you get special ones made up that don't
really help or are unclear.

(I wonder if anyone has looked at how icons help lightly-visually-
impaired users, dyslexics or children navigate - it feels to me they
should help them a lot - but I'm no expert).

[Bug 417199] Re: gnome-terminal command line options potentially irrelevant

2009-08-28 Thread Rob
Following the lead from Bhaskar, I get similar results running from
another terminal (guake) --

robe...@loaner:~$ gnome-terminal --save-config=from-guake

robe...@loaner:~$ cat from-guake
#Written by GNOME Terminal 2.27.91

[GNOME Terminal Configuration]
Version=1
CompatVersion=1
FactoryEnabled=true
Windows=
robe...@loaner:~$

A ^C required to get out, then half a file was written. But it doesn't
look like it's being used --

robe...@loaner:~$ gnome-terminal --load-config=from-guake
robe...@loaner:~$

Though the return is immediate and silent so difficult to tell what's
going on.

I don't understand Bhaskar how this can be considered to be working even
if a couple of lines are written? I'd expect (bearing in mind I've never
touched gnome-terminal code) that the terminal would start and allow
normal operation, then would write out its config to file when exited.
That file could then be referenced with the --load-config switch to
create a new terminal with the same setup.

Again - I'm not sure what the intent of these switches is so that's
probably where it should start (my 2c only). It would be good if someone
who knows would say what the options are supposed to do - if they are
still relevant. Then we can just get on with fixing it to do the right
thing.

[Bug 420527] [NEW] Laptop Power statistics are not very informative

2009-08-28 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The power statistics data sets one can view are only 10 min, 2 hours, 1 day and
1 week.
10 minutes is kind of useful for seeing short term changes, 2 hours is also
good, 1 day is useless and so is 1 week.

Considering laptop battery longevity range from everything from more
than 2 hours to 10 hours. I have no overview of the complete charge
history.

Also the old charge statistics showed all events that took place and had
much more useful information. This statistics is dreadfully lacking in
comparison in my opinion.

Re: [Bug 307019] Re: ecryptfs Private directory not mounted after changing password in users-admin

2009-08-28 Thread James Westby
On Thu Aug 27 22:36:16 UTC 2009 Milan Bouchet-Valat wrote:
Yeah, I forgot that eCryptfs requires the real password to work. It also
needs the old password BTW, so this will never work if the admin changes
the password, since he's not likely to know the old one. Thus, I'm not
sure it's worth using the backends at all. Ideally, D-Bus could provide
us with a secure connection (why isn't that the case?); we could also
use a pipe, should be possible but will require some work.

Well, pam can provide enough to ecryptfs for it to do it's job, so going
through pam would buy us this, and much more as well.

I'm not sure about DBus, I think it can provide a connection with some
level of security, but I'm also leaning towards a pipe being the
best solution.

If your goal is to get this fixed for Alpha 6, better go with a client-
side solution. Just patch the GUI to call the required program.

That may be wise at this point.

I'm planning to redesign the GUI in the next cycle, and I may well use
something like the about-me dialog to change passwords, so that may help
in the middle-term. In the long term, I'm not sure we really need to
pass the clear password to the backends, since it would only be useful
for eCryptfs, which does not fit in our authentication model since the
 admin needs the original password.

It's more than eCryptfs, it allows us to use pam, which is a neccessity
in my eyes, having more than one thing handling all this stuff is going
to keep causing problems.

I'd eventually go for a solution
where eCryptfs is setuid so that anybody (here the GUI) can ask the user
the old and change it if it's the right one. No need for other checks, I
guess. If the admin changes the password on it own, eCryptfs should show
a dialog on start asking for the old password so that it is then
changed. Can you find something better?

I'm pretty certain that If we just pass the new password to pam then it
can do the rest. I belive that using sudo passwd user doesn't break
eCryptfs.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 417199] Re: gnome-terminal command line options potentially irrelevant

2009-08-28 Thread Bhaskar Kandiyal
@Rob

What I meant by 'the options do work' was that the options are not
'irrelevant' i.e they do perform the operation which they are intended
to do, even if they don't perform it correctly. At least the --save-
config option does that. And as for the --load-config option, we can't
check if it works correctly unless the --save-config switch correctly
saves the config file.

I will look into gnome-terminal's code to further trace the problem.

[Bug 419468] Re: crashes and bad images from screenshot

2009-08-28 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
