An addition to my post above.
After I hit ctrl+alt+F7 (tty7) and gdm + x started, a system crash report
appeared, informing of a serious kernel issue and suggesting a restart.
Today I reinstalled all the latest kernel packages (2.6.31-10).
Now the systems works as it should. Karmic opens: grub - xsplash-gdm-xsplash-x.

[Bug 434361] Re: gdm sometimes fails to start after new upstart merge

2009-09-25 Thread Harry
Today I reinstalled all my latest kernel packages (2.6.31-10).
I did this just to make sure it wasn't broken somehow.
You see, everytime x started, I did get a crash report informing of a serious
kernel issue and suggesting a restart.
After that my Karmic started to behave like it should:
booting: grub (hidden menu) - xsplash - gdm - xsplash - x
shutting down: usplash - power down.
So my issue is fixed now.

dino99, this is an unrelated bug. However, it doesn't happen for me. Can
you please attach your /etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-
agent-1.desktop ? By default it says

  Exec=/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

which is correct. Perhaps you once installed an upstream policykit
version and kept the old config file by accident?

What you expected to happen :
read my mails from a exchange server

What happened instead :
Instead I get the error message Unable to retreive message. Lost connection

[Bug 436489] [NEW] new backgrounds for karmic arrive

2009-09-25 Thread Pako
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Today I get the latest updates for karmic with brand new backgrounds. Here is
my experience:
If I choose a background by myself is it like I'm not in Ubuntu, its looses the
spirit of distro. This orange, the default one whatever it is, is ugliest
something I ever seen, its look like an apricot shoot with macro lens or like
sun baked ass!

[Bug 436515] [NEW] [karmic] GDM doesn't start when DNS lookups aren't available

2009-09-25 Thread Jonathan Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

As of 25 September, GDM in karmic doesn't start up unless nameservers
are set.

When I attempt to restart GDM, I receive the following message:

** (gdm-binary:3218): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:3218): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out

When I set my name servers in /etc/resolv.conf and restart GDM again, it
starts as expected.

[Bug 436514] [NEW] Camera import in F-Spot does not care for default import settings

2009-09-25 Thread Clemens Adolphs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

This is what I do:

Plug in my camera (Canon EOS 400D). F-Spot starts. I cancel the dialog, then go
Photo-Import.
The program shows the import dialogue with Import Source on top, a preview
area below, the input field for tags below, and finally the three check-boxes
Detect duplicates, Copy files to Photo folder and Include Subfolders.

Now I select my camera from the input source dropdown.
What happens then is that a new import dialog opens, where there is neither the
Include Subfolders nor the Copy files to Photo folder options. So I do not
have the option of automatically creating a folder according to the date etc.
of the photo, but have to set the destination manually.

This does not happen if I choose a local folder as input source.

I slightly remember that after I initially installed f-spot, it did work
as expected, but now all of a sudden it ignores the setting that
~/Photos should be the default import folder :/

Re: [Bug 430704] Re: user not available ekiga

2009-09-25 Thread Michael
Hello again, Yannick.

Re. 'Security check failed.' Ubuntu Jaunty today did a 'partial upgrade,'
which I checked included EKIGA which I'd added to my software sources
list. Looked good.

Re-started out of habit. I set audio codecs to PCMA, tried 5...@ekiga.net
but the same result. 'Security check failed.'

I checked my details in EkigaEditConfiguration Assistant.

The first page asks for a name and surname. I had assumed that this was
not particularly relevant, as it looked like just a profile to be shown to
a call recipient.

So that will have been changed by me a couple of times because I never
wrote it down. Could have been Michael Monk, Mick Monk, Donald Duck, etc.

Otherwise, what I DID re-enter on a following page was:

Username: mickmon...@ekiga.net

Password: hiekiga

My address is:

sip:mickmon...@ekiga.net

That's the stuff I thought mattered! So maybe the problem with security
has to do with my altered 'profile' name. If so, my mistake.

Yannick, could you interrogate your data-base and e-mail to me my ORIGINAL
user profile name, if that's the security issue?

I know you guys do this for free, and I appreciate it! I'd download the
de-bug but wouldn't know how to manage it ... confusion.

Thank you for replying.

Michael.

 Hi,

Sounds like a wrong username or a wrong password.

btw, if you want to call 500 or 520 you'll need audio codec PCMA and
video codec H261 (for 500) enabled or it will fail. Those numbers only
 support those codecs?

 Best regards,
 Yannick

[Bug 436599] [NEW] system monitor search glitch

2009-09-25 Thread alexis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

This is a UI glitch, not a bug: The program behaves correctly, but can
be confusing.

In the Processes window, typing any text initiates a text search for
this text. If I try to initiate a search with a slash (/), as in various
viewers and some versions of top, I get a search control but the search
text is initialized with a slash... so it doesn't match what I meant to
search for. It would be nice to special-case this so that typing a slash
opens a search control with nothing in it.

[Bug 436552] Re: Drag and drop broken

2009-09-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 436515] Re: GDM doesn't start when DNS lookups aren't available

2009-09-25 Thread Jonathan Carter
It started today after I upgraded my karmic installation to the newest
packages. My last upgrade was in the last two days or so.

I just booted in an older kernel, and then the problem does not occur.
It happens when I boot to 2.6.31-10-generic. Perhaps related to
something that might have changed in the initrd?
