[Bug 384062] Re: evince-thumbnailer with a 100% CPU usage

2009-10-20 Thread André Barmasse
Hi

It seems that the evince-thumbnailer cannot be disabled! In gconf-editor
I have checked the box under /desktop/gnome/thumbnailes/disable_all -
without any effect. Furthermore, I have uninstalled evince, but after
rebooting the evince-thumbnailer was still active and thumbnailing like
crazy. Isn't there really any way to stop the evince-thumbnailer?

Best wishes! André

[Bug 456057] [NEW] Brightness jitter, look like the brightness key event are constantly calling each other brightness-up, brightness-down ...

2009-10-20 Thread Steve Beaulac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When gnome-power-manager isn't running the brightness level is stable. I
just can't change it using the keyboard shortcut. I can change the
brightness level using this command.

sudo echo 8 /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

I can also see the key event using xev when gnome-power-manager isn't
running.

when gnome-power-manager is running, the jitter will only start if I try to
change the brightness level.
This jitter can go on for hours, or sometime just minutes. (without killing
gnome-power-manager)

This happened on my MSI U120 laptop, my HPMini 110 doesn't require
gnome-power-manager to change the brightness (must be hardwired in the
system somehow) so I have no problem with that laptop.

gdm (2.28.1-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (LP: #455944)
- GDM will now avoid calling XAddHosts for remote connections.
- Now GDM uses DeviceKit-power instead of gnome-power-manager for Suspend

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 393854 ***

While I agree that the correct policy would be to (after a clear
warning) allow password-less accounts...

'Documentation' in this case should be a CLEAR error message triggered
by this combination of events: Attempting to use the unlocked mode of
system administration packages with any account name combined with no
entered password. Such a message might state:

Sorry! Security measures prevent change to the system by accounts that
lack passwords. Please (hyperlink this too)change your account password
(hyper-linked to local documentation). For more information see
(relevant educational link) .

The linked document MAY (probably should) also document how to do what
the user wants -anyway-; if they are able to perform said changes they
are likely their system's administrator anyway.)

[Bug 456082] [NEW] System administration task dialgues do not allow the account 'root' to authenticate even with a password

Logout/switch back to your X session.

Using Jaunty on my Thinkpad X60s, both Fn+F3 to show the battery status and

[Bug 393854] Re: Update PAM policy to allow password-less logins set up via users-admin

2009-10-20 Thread MichaelEvans
My use case is different. My parents are near retirement and just want
a super-easy-to-use computer; that means security via physical access
only. Accounts are merely a preference filing system to them.

Password-less accounts in the admin group are a questionable thing; but
if that's what the system-administrator sets up that is what they have
decided to use or their clients have demanded. In that case the
accounts should still be able to authenticate.

The use case of children, guests, and other password-less accounts
should involve removal of the admin and likely some other groups or
accounts that never had those groups.

Further, it would be -extremely- nice to have an account editing tool
that could create new accounts and visually diff existing accounts
against template users (such as guest, system-administrator, etc).

[Bug 437429] Re: Cannot prevent login sound

2009-10-20 Thread rfurgy
To be honest we almost need a sound management system that does for all
the sounds like gnome art did for all the bling bling for the desktop. I
agree that sounds should at least be able to be turned off, but on the
other hand I'm one of those people that would like to customise the
sound theme so I and pick which Ogg sound effects I want in place for
each event.

Re: [Bug 428884] Re: Vlc does not inhibit screensaver

2009-10-20 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Rogerio rogeriodiver-ubu...@yahoo.com.br writes:

Today, after a system update, gnome-screensaver and VLC received new
 versions:

 $ apt-cache policy gnome-screensaver
 gnome-screensaver:
  *** 2.28.0-0ubuntu3 0

Changes:
  [ Chris Coulson ]
  * debian/patches/08_gs_dialog_request_to_exit.patch:
- Updated to not register a handler for SIGTERM in the dialog. This
prevents the dialog from hanging on timeouts or authentication
  failures (LP: #454959)

 $ apt-cache policy vlc
 vlc:
  *** 1.0.2-1ubuntu2 0

Changes:
  * PulseAudio: higher priority than ALSA, LP: #402018

Then I perfomed a new test: this time VLC worked fine and stopped the
screensaver, without the gnome-screensaver package from the PPA!

It appears the problem is fixed.

I cannot see how either change could be related to this.

[Bug 454311] [NEW] MIR for seed, gnome-js-common (dependency of epiphany-browser)

2009-10-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: seed

With seahorse-plugins now switched from epiphany-webkit to epiphany-
browser as a build-dependency, the 'seed' and 'gnome-js-common' source
packages are being pulled into main - I guess because these are what
epiphany-browser uses to implement javascript support? So either we
need an MIR for these packages for karmic, or we need epiphany-browser
rebuilt without seed support.

epiphany-browser itself is not included on any media, including the DVDs
(it's only a build-dependency of seahorse-plugins, not a dependency), so
this doesn't have to be urgently sorted for RC, but we need to resolve
it one way or another for final.

Assigning to asac as the uploader of epiphany-browser to karmic.
Alexander, if you don't have time to take care of this, feel free to
reassign.

[Bug 456024] [NEW] Cannot delete multiple (potentially any) contacts from Ubuntu One Couch DB address book

2009-10-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: evolution

I imported my google contacts from a CSV (outlook) and the formatting
was incorrect. Fields were imported into the wrong columns. When I
attempted to select all and delete, nothing happened. I tried doing this
in offline mode, and nothing happened again.

Not sure why there isn't an option to clear multiple contacts out of the
DB.

One more thing. When you get duplicate detected . . . if there are
multiples, the system shows one window for each duplicate. Not a good
experience when you have 200 duplicates!

2009-10-20 Thread Chris Coulson
Thanks, but that isn't a bug. Ubuntu configures Policykit so that
members of the admin unix group are the users who can authenticate for
actions requiring administrative privileges. The root user doesn't
belong to this group, and so can't authenticate for these actions. Feel
free to read the Policykit documentation and configure it for your needs

[Bug 456088] Re: Default calendar not default when creating a new appointment

2009-10-20 Thread Juha Siltala
Browsing upstream Bugzilla, I learned that new appointments are created
by default to the currently selected calendar, or if no calendar is
selected, to the default one (GNOME bug #303296). After testing, I can
confirm this is the case. Concequently, the current behavior not erratic
as such, but it is a little unituitive especially when the calendar view
is not visible -- a common use case: you're reading email and need to
add an appointment based on the email you're looking at. Upstream seems
to consider this a bug instead of enhancement.

2009-10-20 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
no :) (i use xfce4, from xubuntu jaunty upgraded to karmic with update-manager)
but i have selected in xfce4 stufff the 'launch gnome services at startup. I
guess it is supposed to do the right things.

when i launch the daemon (as user) i have the following messages :

~$ gnome-settings-daemon

(gnome-settings-daemon:8099): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error:
assertion `src != NULL' failed

(gnome-settings-daemon:8099): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:8099): WARNING **: Grab failed for some keys,
another application may already have access the them.

** (gnome-settings-daemon:8099): WARNING **: Clipboard manager is
already running.

do this should be filled as a bug against xfce4-something for lack of gnome
services ?

when the dameon is launched, the evince message disappears.

[Bug 351130] [NEW] [jaunty] doesn't offer to install codecs when inserting non encrypted DVD

2009-10-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-codec-install

On a fresh Jaunty beta i386 (dutch language), when inserting a non encrypted
dvd, the program (gnome-codec-install) pops up and search for the codecs but
doesn't find any codecs. If i recall it correct it indicated dvd-source not
found and quits. I think it doesn't crash because i don't get an apport
message.
I find this a regression, in intrepid it downloaded the correct packages.
I managed to get the dvd to work by downloading the necessary packages with
synaptic.
I hope this will be fixed before the actual release because a new user will
think it just doesn't work.
