[Bug 440465] Re: removing pulseaudio breaks sound control
I agree with the last two paragraphs of post #33. The increased instability of Ubuntu scares me, since it is a real threat to new users. Although I get frustrated myself, I have some experience of fixing things even when the problem does not follow a common -nix logic. I have brought a number of users to Ubuntu so far, however, this influx may be jeopardized by the issues like pulseaudio. Personally, I do get it when it is a new card and does not have to be stable. What if it has been stable with alsa/oss/esd before? I hope pulseaudio is not being nice just to me and most users especially newbies are not hurt... What is more disappointing is there is less and less ALTERNATIVES out there. I am not ready for it... However, I posted it earlier concerning some other pulseaudio issues https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439815 . I was able to build gnome-media package without pulseaudio: deinstall it first then To rebuild gnome-media-2.28.1 from source: download and unpack the source package. cd to the directory. You will have to do sudo apt-get build-dep gnome-media, with which pulseaudio libs could be also be installed, it is harmless I guess at this point. Then configure like this. ./configure --disable-pulseaudio --enable-gstmix --enable-gstprops --enable-grecord --disable-scrollkeeper Then I used fakeroot make with checkinstall to compile and build it. I can now run gnome-volume-control with oss and/or alsa mixers... However, I still get issues with the notification area applets on GNOME.Rhythmbox is acting up, perhaps, becuase it uses pulse as the output, I got amarok, audacious, xmms and mplayer instead :) Nevertheless, haven't had any system locks (which most likely were due to pulseaudio server) ever since I removed the package. [Bug 31102] Re: Can't disable tooltips
The worst offenders at the moment are the pop ups over the workspaces. At the very least, with Compiz active, the pop up will say “Current Workspace: Desk 1”. Every workspace has incessant reminders to “Click to start dragging xxx”. I have known that for a few years now. This situation is magnified when using Compiz. The attachment shows how the pop up displays the entire title of a web page from Firefox. This pop up covers almost ¼ of the whole desktop every time the mouse passes over the workspaces. The second screen shot shows what happens when the mouse goes over the Firefox task bar when in the same workspace. Admittedly, the issues is not as bad if not running Compiz because the pop up is somewhat truncated, but it is still an issue. @aoirthoir: The gtkrc files go with the themes. You will find the themes in either ~/.themes/ or /usr/share/themes in the case of system-wide default themes. There is no ~/.themes/ on my system. /usr/share/themes contains 118 folders. Controls and boarders and complete themes all have a folder, only icons get their own place /usr/share/icons edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and add the line gtk-enable-tooltips = 0 Rummaging through 118 folders to permanently change this setting is NOT a valid fix for this problem ** Attachment added: Screenshot.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35955744/Screenshot.png -- Can't disable tooltips https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/31102 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

My version of Eog is 2.24.1-0ubuntu1. 0. prepare a sample of 32 image files in a single folder with Gimp: - 2 photos (1st label a or b) - 4 sizes (2nd label): 2000x1500 a, 600x450 b, 200x150 c, 60x45 d - 2 orientations (3rd label): portrait e, landscape f - 2 format files: jpg and png 1. open a jpg image with eog 2. rotate CTRL+R (4th label): once x, 3 times y 3. save CTRL+S 4. forward 5. loop from 2., so that all images of the current folder are treated once 6. the result is 64 new image files It appeared that: 0. obviously, skipping steps 2 and 3 does not make the bug appear 1. the png files are not affected 2. the 2 sets of jpg files (1st label photo a and photo b) are affected the same way 3. the bug keeps image size unchanged 4. the affected files have rows (resp. columns) of pixels moving from one end of the image to the other end: from the top to the bottom (resp. from the left hand side to the right hand side) 5. the order of these rows (resp. columns) is inversed (mirror effect) 6. rotating the image once moves the pixel columns: from the left hand side to the right hand side, and rotating it 3 times moves the pixel rows: from the top to the bottom 7. globally, the smaller the image size, the higher the number of rows (resp. columns) moved Not to infer too much, here is a list of the 26 affected files (others remained unchanged), with corresponding number of rows (resp. columns) moved, and new location (b for bottom and r for right hand side): aaey.jpg and baey.jpg 12 b abey.jpg and bbey.jpg 2 b abfy.jpg and bbfy.jpg 8 b acey.jpg and bcey.jpg 6 b acfy.jpg and bcfy.jpg 8 b adey.jpg and bdey.jpg 13 b adfy.jpg and bdfy.jpg 12 b aafx.jpg and bafx.jpg 4 r abfx.jpg and bbfx.jpg 2 r acex.jpg and bcex.jpg 8 r acfx.jpg and bcfx.jpg 6 r adex.jpg and bdex.jpg 12 r adfx.jpg and bdfx.jpg 13 r Attached are the 16 original and 32 bugged jpg image files. I have a similar problem. Segfaults seem to occur mostly when creating thumbnails for media files. Re: [Bug 486453] Re: when open evolution email, all my past emails on the server are COMPLETELY downloaded to computer--THOUSANDS OF THEM!! HELP
I have been unable to correct this situation. The only way I can stop the 1000s of emails from being re-downloaded from the server to the computer (evolution) is to alter the settings so that I no longer keep my emails on the server. However, while this fixes the 1000s of emails flooding in my evolution each time I open that application, it messes up my blackberry, which I need for my business. [Bug 382703] Re: Home Folder has 3 different names
Consider this: If the user even *knows* where in the filesystem their files are kept is, then they probably also know that it is different from just /home, and they probably also know that home directory is the proper name. If they don't, it takes all of 30 seconds for them to find out. So, I'd say it should show up as exactly one of the following, in order of preference: Home Directory contents of $HOME, e.g. /home/vanessa Home My Home Whatever you do, don't just use the user's first name. It pre-supposes that the user has put in a valid first name, and really, it gets confusing if the user has more than one directory related to their name. As for the amount of space an entry takes up on the screen... I'm using a 13 point font (as my vision isn't the greatest), on a 19 LCD at 1280x1024, and Home Directory still only about 4 cm wide here in this comment editor. I can't say much about the need to translate, except to say that, since you are already learning a new OS, you're eventually going to have to learn where your stuff is kept. You may as well just learn that the term for it is home directory. -- Home Folder has 3 different names https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382703 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp Using gnome-power-manager 2.28.1 on Ubuntu 9.10 x64 I am 97.3% charged. 5 minutes left to charge. When I unplug the power, I get a pop-up message that says 4 minutes remaining in battery (but with accurate percentage). When I mouse over the battery icon, I get a more accurate 3 hours 45 minutes displayed. (Big battery.) I have seen it display a real value when mousing over the battery icon when pulling power. [Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow
From what I googled, it appears the 'noatime' option implies 'nodiratime' as well. I was able to specify this option in the USB-Properties-Volume-Mount options. It seemed to work when I transfered two 4.2GB movies but I'll keep an eye on it -- I'm not sure it's fixed in my case. Also, this issue is showing up in other distro's as well (fedora, arch linux, opensuse). Just google 'usb file copy very slow'. Some users in these posts think it's a kernel issue, but I don't know enough to say for sure. Coincidentally, I have 2 x64 machines - one with 8.10 (older box with the original installation) and one with 9.04 (newer box with all the latest updates). Interestingly enough, I've never seen this issue in the 8.10 box and I've been running both of them for months.
