[Bug 498445] [NEW] Nautilus exits on folder rename

2009-12-19 Thread Peter Wolf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 9.10

When I open a folder with a large number of items (eg pictures) and
straight away create a new folder;then try and rename it;when i press
Enter the Nautilus window just exits without renaming the new folder.I
expect the new folder to be renamed and Nautilus not to exit.This bug
happens very frequently and should be easily reproducible.

By the way the links in your Ubuntu guidelines should open a new tab as I tried
clicking on one to do a better report and my message disappeared so here I am
typing it again.

I can confirm that I still get this problem on 9.10. I have installed a
fresh system on new hardware (Acer Aspire 7530). But the camera is the
same (Canon PowerShot S5 IS).

This is quite an embarrassing bug.

Hello there,
I have upgraded yesterday my Ubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10 and I got the same

I executed the commands suggested by Eduard but they didn't solve the problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: [Bug 498011] Re: re-mounting a remote windows shared folder after a sleep fails

2009-12-19 Thread smyrno
So, 6 hours of sleep later, I tried to re-access to the remote folder via
the network explorer. It displayed me an error message the first time i
clicked my folder (sorry, I couldn't catch this one). The second time, and
all following times, it opened gedit with the error shown in the
attachement. smb://remoteFolder is a directory

Clicking on the shortcut in the left hand side panel brings me to the
content i looked for, and the error doesn't happen again.

I will have to try again to see if cliking the shortcut leads to an error,
and to report the error shown when re-cliking the folder in the explorer.
and what happens when i mount another shared folder from the same server
before mounting the previously mounted folder.

[Bug 485923] Re: Probable memory leak in gnome-settings-daemon

2009-12-19 Thread w1zard
I'm seeing the same behaviour - both the gnome-settings-daemon and
gnome-volume-control-applet are up at 100Mb after 1 days usage. I only
noticed because my system slowed to a crawl and killing these processes
resolved the issue.

Seems like a fairly major memory leak to have this kind of impact -
hopefully this report will get some attention amongst the developers :)

[Bug 498474] Re: gnome-panel hangs when using recently used files

2009-12-19 Thread Nicolas da Luz Duque
I'm willing to do that, but like I said, the program doesn't crash, and
seems to enter an endless loop.

What should I do, then? Enter the loop, then ctrl+c in gdb and get the
trace then?

How can I prevent gnome-panel from respawning on its own to be able to
run it in gdb? It used to be possible to remove the auto-respawn in
gnome-session-properties, but it's not there anymore...

2009-12-19 Thread Chris Coulson
Yes, you can press CTRL+C in GDB to interrupt it and get a backtrace
that way. It might be worth interrupting a couple of times to make sure
that it interrupts in a similar code section.

You can attach GDB to the already running instance of gnome-panel,
rather than killing the existing one and starting a new process.

[Bug 449198] Re: No GUI option to change login theme

2009-12-19 Thread FichdlMaa
There are already a lot o suggestions how to deactive the user list in gdm2
database,
e.g. http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Baustelle/GDM2_-_Tweaks ,

but on our Family PC we need it TOGETHER with it's configuration feature:
Only normal users should be displayed, no support and system users!

But :-( Karmic :-( ignores the old

/etc/gdm/custom.conf:
...
[greeter]
GraphicalTheme=happygnome-list
GraphicalThemes=happygnome-list
GraphicalThemeRand=true
IncludeAll=false-- !!!
Include=dad,mum,kids -- !!!
Exclude=nobody,install,root,backup -- !!!

[chooser]
...

I couldn't find any corresponding entry within gdm2 database (gconf-
editor; gconftool-2 rev. 2.28).

[Bug 498474] Re: gnome-panel hangs when using recently used files

2009-12-19 Thread Nicolas da Luz Duque
That doesn't seem to work... I've attached the running gnome-panel in
gdb as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace , but when I
ctrl+c in order to interrupt the process, it seems to work (in that the
cursor stops changing when hovering above the file selection window) but
I don't get the (gdb) prompt back so I can't ask it for a backtrace.

That's how it looks like:
blabla debuging symbols
(gdb) continue
Continuing.
here I make it hang
^C
nothing more

I'm sorry, but the extent of my gdb experience so far is launching programs in
it, making them crash, then getting the backtrace. I've never interrupted a
process before to get a trace. As you said, since it seems to enter an infinite
loop, the trace we'll get might not even be relevant at all.

Wouldn't it be easier for a dev to reproduce this bug and investigate it
himself? If you insist on me doing it, maybe you can guide me through
the steps on irc or something. I'm iceman on #ubuntu-bugs.

--- bug ---
when i open a new message window, and i type the letter o, it is just not
read by the application into any of the new message fields. it's as if i never
typed it.
strangely enough, when i type uppercase O , the letter appears just fine on
the text.
the letter o, when typed, also appears just fine on evolution fields on other
forms, like on the search field on the mail main screen (where it shows
received/sent messages, etc).
the letter o is also correctly read into any other app in Ubuntu (like i'm
typing right now).
I tried to review the keyboard configuration, character encoding and other
options with no progress made.
I also reinstalled the evolution package, but things didn't change.

help will be appreciated.

[Bug 498550] [NEW] Gnome should keep the volume settings when disconnecting an USB audio device

2009-12-19 Thread Guillaume Pratte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Using Karmic.

How to reproduce :
1- Connect an USB audio device (for instance, an USB headset)
2- Open gnome-volume-control
3- Change volumes for microphone input speaker
4- Disconnect device
5- Reconnect device

Expected results : the volume for both speaker and microphone should be
restored as before disconnection
Actual results : the volume is restored to a predefined setting (determined at
computer shut-down?)
Impact : before using Skype, for instance, one must always adjust volume
settings before making a call

[Bug 229370] [NEW] Regression: USB removable storage devices listed in fstab no longer show in Computer

2009-12-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On my system I have an external hard drive connected through USB, that
has an entry in /etc/fstab setup so that it always mounts in a specified
location. It is setup with users,noauto so that users can mount it -
as it has a FAT32 file system, the mounting user has full access to the
drive for the duration of the mount to the exclusion of other users.

In Gutsy (7.10) this setup was very useful - users had an icon for the
drive under Places-Computer or on their desktop and could mount and
unmount the drive easily. Since the upgrade to Hardy the device no
longer appears in either Computer or desktops. After commenting out
the fstab entry and re-logging in, the drive now appears but when
accessing it it mounts under /media/PRODUCT-NAME instead of where I need
it to go.

[Bug 498539] Re: package gnome-screensaver 2.28.0-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2

2009-12-19 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 498546] [NEW] apt-get upgrade results in multiple icons for each program in toolbar

2009-12-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Fresh i386 install on virtualbox. Running update manager results in the
several packages not found under the url

http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/

I then went to update using

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I was required to download and install 20Mb. After the upgrade I had 2
icons of the same program under Applications and System. I have not
reset the machine to see if they would go away after a reboot, but to a
new user this would be confusing. Since so many packages were updated
and installed I have no idea where to start on trying to find what would
cause this issue. I will provide logs if asked.

Fresh install was on December 13 and upgrade was on December 19.

2009-12-19 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for your bug report. This is already fixed in this upload
though (you just saw it because you've only just uploaded to the version
which has the fix in. You won't see it in future upgrades though):

gnome-menus (2.28.0.1-0ubuntu5) lucid; urgency=low

  * Fix file_id values when using cache:
- 22_desktop-cache.patch: Set correct basename (missing .desktop
  extension).
- 22_desktop-cache.patch: Create CachedDir subdirectories for subdirectory
  groups, so that the file-ids have subdirectory- prepended.
- debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Prepend subdirectory to group names, to
  preserve correct file path.
- This fixes wrong location of software-center (LP: #494607), menu entries
  appearing twice after a package upgrade, and gnome-screensaver not
  finding its themes (LP: #494669)

2009-12-19 Thread WeatherGod
Grondr, thank you for your in-depth and exhaustive analysis. It will
prove to be very valuable. I have marked this report as Confirmed for
metacity, and I hope that will help capture the attention of the
metacity maintainers.

I think you have a much better handle on what is going on than I do, and
doubt I would be able to do a proper summary of the issue. If you are
willing, could you please update the description above with a summary
of: symptoms, diagnosis/causes, and possible work-arounds. Usually,
when I revise a description, I set those things as subsections with
headers like so:

=== Symptoms ===
   ...

=== Diagnosis ===

=== Work-arounds ===

Bug reports that are nicely formatted like this are more likely to be
dealt with by maintainers. I hope this helps get their attention and
that they then can resolve this issue for you.

[Bug 498604] [NEW] slow terminal output

2009-12-19 Thread drhex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

(Ubuntu9.10 using nvidia accelerated drivers)
When editing a text file in vim, I noticed that scrolling up and down is slow
jerky (i.e. can't keep up with key-repeat speed, does 3-4 updates per second
jumping several lines on every update). top tells me that no other
application is using significant cpu-time. konsole on the same system has no
problems keeping up with the key-repeat speed on cursor up/down.
I tested running

time seq -f 'teest %g' 100

in both konsole and gnome-terminal with as equal settings as possible:
* ran in the same gnome-session
* same window size
* same font
* anti-aliased text enabled
* same amount of scrollback

and konsole is about 8 times faster. A web search indicates that
slowness in gnome-terminal has been noticed for several years, so I want
to make sure this is reported to the proper place.

available for unmounting/remounting then reattempting access without
forcing the user to unmount/remount the share manually.

[Bug 498609] [NEW] Attempting to create a folder called misc crashed Nautilus

2009-12-19 Thread Charles Hixson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I suspect the name as being at fault because after two or three times of
trying to create a folder named misc (quotes not part of name), I gave
up and, instead, renamed the untitled folder to other. I.e., it
successfully created the folder, but refused to rename it to misc, but
found other to be an acceptable name.

I was in the process of reducing the folder from around 14,000 entries
by aggregating them into folders. I'm currently down to around 4,500
entries, but now it will start increasing again until I devise the next
stage of aggregation.

My file system is ext3.

   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line

As of this writing my system is up-to-date in terms of package updates
via the Update Manager. Happy to provide any further information as it
is important for me to be able to setup auto-login. I also disagree
with Sebastien's comment on 2009-11-01 at this being only a corner case
affecting one person. I wouldn't imagine the Login Screen dialog to be
an often-accessed feature by most average users and therefore the bug
would not get as much exposure as, say, a bug in Firefox.

[Bug 35997] Re: Gnome's Places menu starts Konqueror instead of Nautilus

2009-12-19 Thread EddieArt
I have version 2.28.0-0ubuntu5 of gnome-session in Karmic and I'm experiencing
the same bug.
For me, however, what opens up instead of Nautilus is the Synaptic Package
Manager :)

Hendy and Dinçer's fix worked for me; but because it was happening for
me with Nautilus, with him with SMplayer, and with another person with
Konqueror, I don't think it's can be strictly related to SMplayer.
Dinçer, like you I found a similar line (referencing Synaptic naturally
instead of SMplayer) inside my mimeapps.list file.

This was a really odd and annoying bug for the longest time.
Does anyone know where something like this would pop up? I'm a Linux noob and
am not a developer at all.

Anyway, thanks Hendy and others for the easy fix!
