[Bug 369525] Re: Use IEC standard for binary byte units

I sent a git-formatted patch against trunk upstream, and updated the
test cases to match. I'll apply that updated patch instead (and against
2.23.5). Thanks Benjamin!

[Bug 535534] Re: nautilus crashes when mounting remote directory

2010-03-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

There is no visible option in systempreferancesappearance that will
move the close, max and min buttons back to the right. Furthermore, all
of the theme preview pictures still show those buttons on the right, and

[Bug 535322] Re: no gui options to switch title bar buttons back to right side

2010-03-10 Thread Gabe Gorelick
I believe that they've finally decided to keep the window control
buttons on the right for the new themes in Lucid, so that solves your
basic problem. But the more general problem of not being able to control
the location of the window controls still exists. gnome-appearance-
properties does give you the option to change the window border to
another given variety, but does not allow you to edit existing window
borders, which would be a nice feature.

[Bug 433500] Re: gvfsd memory leak

2010-03-10 Thread Trouilliez vincent
I also have this problem ! I am running Ubuntu (vanilla/Gnome) 9.04.

The problem only appeared 3 days ago though, and from reading the above
comments it seems I have the same context:

- leaving the computer running 24/7
- I did started a Virtualbox session a few days ago and it's been running 24/7
as well
- gfvsd ate 2GB yesterday evening. I ended the process and instantly got my 2GB
back. This morning the machin was unresponsive and gfsd (must have restarted
automatically, somehow ?), verdict : 3GB had leaked ! 2GB in RAM (hence
filling/saturating the 3.2GB of RAM I have available), and putting the
remaining 1GB on swap.

I am very surprised that such a disaster is considered only as a low
importance bug ?!

I saw a comment above talking about power saving settings. If it does
matter, then I guess I should add that all power saving features are
disabled (it a desktop computer). No screensaver, hard drives alwyas
running, everything always on.

I am not terribly skilled at debugging, and other subscribers to this
bug seem more able than I am, but if there is sometihng useful that I
could contribute, I will definitely make the effort, as this gigantic
and fast growing memory leak is giving me nightmares now I have hit it !

[Bug 535596] [NEW] Notifications should show generic user icon if user does not have an avatar

Currently, if an user does not have an avatar, Empathy shows their

I'm also assigning this bug to the Papercuts project, something that was

[Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files

2010-03-10 Thread IAT
Right to follow this up... I am getting very similar behavior with this
system setup:

Ubuntu Karmic 9.10
gedit 2.28.0
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 045e:0039 Microsoft Corp. IntelliMouse Optical

To reproduce this behavior you open the text editor as the previous user
says choose an item to copy and copy it. Scroll with the mouse wheel say
two line to see more text on the page then click one right click and
paste and nothing appears where you pasted but it does appear somewhere
else in the document. Clicking edit undo will let you find where gedit
has placed the text. This is causing corruption in my programming.

The solution to the bug as it stands might give a clue as to what the
issue is. You must click twice on the paste location and then gedit
pastes where it should do.

This also happens when scrolling with the mouse button and pressing it
to paste what you have selected.

The text is getting pasted off screen so that is why it is hard to
notice it going on. You could assume that the copy/paste failed and try
again each time corrupting your work more and more.

Any further info just ask.

[Bug 535606] [NEW] lucid: GDM resets video mode, although it's already set by kernel

2010-03-10 Thread derLars
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Ubuntu 10.04 alpha 3, package version 2.29.92-0ubuntu1

Lucid uses the very nice new feature of kernel mode setting, already
setting the video mode correctly during boot time. However, when the
boot is through and gdm takes over, the system freezes (sometimes with
boot messages still visible, sometimes with an incomplete gdm login
screen) until a button is pressed. Then, gdm (or X?) resets the video
mode, as far as I can tell to the same settings as the kernel already
did. The login-screen is only usable after this reset.

This behavior was appropriate when the the bootscreen and gdm use
different video modes, but should not happen when they are same (which
is what we presumably want anyways).

I'm not sure where to file this bug, so feel free to move it to kernel
or X.

[Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files

2010-03-10 Thread IAT
Compiz is the issue here when it is set to normal mode the copy paste
bug in gedit appears.

When we turn on advanced settings the copy and paste bug seems to
disappear in part see below.

We turn it off and it it seems to have gone completely.

The select, copy and click on new location and paste bit works fine.

This has uncovered a new bug this happens whether compiz is on or off :

Highlight a bit of text and clicking the scrollwheel at a new location to copy
and paste seems to jump back to the original location of the text selected and
sometimes pasted where you have just click and other times not. This is also
confusing for users who might have scrolled a couples of pages worth of text
away from their select location but still better than the copy and paste
corruption issue.

[Bug 535626] [NEW] gedit copy and paste using scroll wheel jumps around screen

2010-03-10 Thread IAT
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Note: This happens when compiz is on or off in normal mode or advanced.

How to reproduce:
Highlight a bit of text and clicking the scroll wheel at a new location you
have scrolled to with the scroll wheel to copy and paste seems to jump back to
the original location of the text selected and sometimes pastes where you have
just click and other times not. This is also confusing for users who might have
scrolled a couples of pages worth of text away from their select location.

What I expected:
The highlighted text should be pasted at the location I just click after
highlighting.

[Bug 533870] Re: Changing the long name in users-admin to the same name results in an error

2010-03-10 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Actually, that error should only happen when you try to change your
*own* name. The fact that the name seems to change while it doesn't is
an unrelated bug that should be easy to fix.

I'd need deeper debugging to understand what's going on. Could you install the
package for your architecture from:
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/s/system-tools-backends/

and then run
sudo killall system-tools-backends
sudo gdb /usr/sbin/system-tools-backends
break dispatcher.c:547

then reproduce the problem, and when gdb stops, type
print (message_uid == uid)
print message_uid
print uid

[Bug 528543] Re: Optimize battery lifespan option

2010-03-10 Thread Sandeep
@lavinog - I agree on your assertion that it is counterintuitive to keep
a battery at low capacity for a portable device. Which is why I think
having profiles is a good alternative.

By default, let it operate as it is doing now - charge always. However,
a lot of people use their laptops as desktop replacements and it makes
sense for them to choose a optimize battery lifespan - battery will not
be fully charged option.

As I have read on many sites, even charging batteries only when they
fall below 90% is far better than continuous charging. A 90% charge is
still a very acceptable number for portable devices.

Profile-based battery charging gives one the flexibility to tune your
system to maximize battery lifespan.

[Bug 535650] [NEW] Evolution desktop entry does not load translations

2010-03-10 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

I've just noticed that the Evolution desktop entry in the menu appears
untranslated in ca_ES.UTF-8.

The .desktop file includes the correct Gettext domain, and the .mo file
shipped as part of the language packs contains the translations, but
they don't seem to get loaded. In /usr/share/applications/desktop*cache
the entry is in English.

There where some additions to the desktop entry as part of the DX
10_desktop_shortcuts.patch in Evolution, which might be related to this.

I've only noticed it in Evolution, but I could imagine it will affect
other menu entries. If so, feel free to update the bug title
accordingly.

[Bug 535660] [NEW] Regression: file operations dialog cannot be hidden

2010-03-10 Thread Oded Arbel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Lucid, the Nautilus file operations dialog no longer shows an icon
in the notification area and instead shows an icon in the indicator
applet.

The problem with that is that in Karmic when you clicked on the
notification area icon the dialog would hide itself and when you clicked
it again it would show. In Lucid clicking the indicator icon opens a
menu with a single item show copy dialog and clicking it always shows
the file operations dialog (including restoring it if its minimized).

The first regression is the need for two clicks and the second
regression is that clicking the menu again does not hide the dialog.

After testing I verified that one can close the dialog using the window
close button and then the operation continues and the dialog can be
shown using the indicator icon, but this use case is not very
discoverable: many users will hesitate to click on the close button as
in most circumstances closing a window that does something is equivalent
to stopping the operation.

Suggestions:
1. remove the menu from the indicator icon and use just a click on the icon to
show and hide the file operation dialog.
2. disable the file operations dialog's close button - clicking on it will not
do what users expect and it is just confusing.
3. add a real button in the file operations dialog labeled Hide (possibly
with a checkbox always hide file operations) to hide the dialog in addition
to the undiscoverable actions of clicking on the indicator icon or closing the
window.

David, from a strict point of view, I agree. But if Bug 497646 was

495671 a duplicate as well, despite my sentimental issues due to being

Also, it should be noted that what I requested in Bug 497646 is
precisely what mpt is suggesting in Comment #6 (1).

[Bug 522466] Re: Cannot Put sudo PSWD In

2010-03-10 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

[Bug 475806] Re: gnome-power-manager does not reflect change from AC power and charged state to battery power and discharging state

2010-03-10 Thread IKT
Not the same as 384304 suggests it doesn't think it's on battery at all,
where as on my netbook for example it will charge the battery up, and be
happy at 100% but then:

At 100% charge, gnome-power-manager does not correctly update if AC
power is disconnected to return to battery operation, and continues to
show Laptop battery is fully charged.

2010-03-10 Thread ozhan
Hi;
I am using VPCYS1E (Y Series) Sony Vaio notebook, I am using Ubuntu 9.04 with
2.6.31-20-generic kernel. I am also experiencing same issue, i couldn't control
screen brightness with any of gnome and linux tools . I have tried disabling
Acpi from kernel also tried acpi_backlight=vendor but nothing changed. I have
tried 2.6.32 kernel but again no result. Now my boot log shows me the log below.

Thanks
Özhan
