[Bug 542435] [NEW] White Icons not clearly visible on low contrast screens

2010-03-20 Thread Denis.K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The white icons do not show up well on low contrasts screens. (i.e. Asus Eee
1005ha)
Some of these 'white icons' are, the ubuntu logo, power icon, accessibility
icon, etc.

Icons should be changed to a more visible color, that is more different
than the current light grey background, to create more contrast, and
therefore visible.

For example, at its current color, on a Asus Eee 1005ha, it is about
only 10% visible, maybe even less, depending on screen angle.

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-20 Thread Requiem Masamune

On Sat, 20 Mar 2010 00:55 +, j_baer bae...@gmail.com wrote:
My belief is this decision was not made by the flip of a coin, the toss
of a dart, or the personal preference of any single individual. I
believe the concept was discussed, debated, and evaluated as to adding
value to Ubuntu as it exists today and what it will become tomorrow.

As to the order of the buttons, the same arguments apply.

My suggestion is let’s not be too quick to judge and give it a try. I
see a work-a-around is already in place for those who feel strongly
 the placement is incorrect.

I have to politely take issue with this give it a try attitude.

Firstly I feel underestimated, do you really think I don't know what I
want? that *we, linux users* don't know what I want? Simply choosing
linux already implies having strong opinions about computers.

Secondly, I have business to do, and a life, enough free software is of
alpha and beta quality for me to be enrolled into a usability study to
justify someone's pet windows configuration I never asked for.

Thirdly, this is a LTS, do you want to make an experimental release out
of a LTS? Making it opt-in is the best option.

Fourthly, if the polls reflect the preferences of the users (when in
reality polls are visited by early adopter types) I predict most users
will simply google for ubuntu fix window buttons where they will find
this one liner in the forums

$ gconftool --type string --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout
menu:minimize,maximize,close

And go about their business as usual.

Certainly this change won't break ubuntu (except for a few hundred kids
who will as a result of this hate ubuntu as soon as their school forces
them to use it) it will only make it slightly more annoying, this will
simply be added to the list of stuff we have to do every time we upgrade
like installing codecs and such.

The tragedy is, the ubuntu packers will go around thinking they made
everybody happy *while* proving everybody wrong! haha! But no, listen to
the polls, the polls are the answer.

Some else said that this is not an issue people over which choose their
distro. It's true, probably, ubuntu won't loose much users from this
change, certainly, it won't gain any. And the people who don't and won't
care will still not care. so what do the people that do care think? Is
their opinion that unimportant?

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-20 Thread Denis.K
I would of expected a user survey to go out, or something along those
lines to get an accurate, and full understanding of what USERS would
feel best with. After all, ubuntu is an OS that is built around open and
free ideals. Not letting everyone, or at least OPENLY DISCUSS CHANGE, is
a breach of its own beliefs and mission

Seeing as that changing the side of the window buttons is a pretty big
UI change, many users feel that they aren't getting a say in the changes
that they dislike, and is why there are a lot of negative thoughts, with
negative attitudes. But, however, if it is put into perspective, it is
reasonable to be acting in such a way.

For years, ubuntu has had its window buttons on the same side, in the
same order. With the new changes the buttons are now on the left, but
not only that, they are in a different order. I strongly believe that
this completely ruins the consistency factor of ubuntu. And on the other
side, seeing as this is it's 10th release, and a LTS, it is also
reasonable that there is going to be some change.

However, the main problem is that every, every, every popular OS has the
close button in a corner, and never towards the center...this is
probably the greatest concern of all the people who are against the
change, and NOT the side of the buttons.

Whats done is done, unless the UI Freeze is lenient. But for NEXT TIME,
Canonical should put extreme care in making sure users are satisfied.
(Surveys, surveys, surveys, heck, even Google is doing it!)

constantly when emptying the trash on Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. There is no

immediately after:

Oddly enough, once it happens the first time it doesn't happen again
until after I've logged out and then logged back in.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-20 Thread Tylerratboy
This has probably been mentioned many times before, however. The way I
look at it, I don't mind them on the left side. What I have a problem
with, is that they just threw the buttons on the left side, and left it
in the same order as they were on the right, meaning the close button is
on the inside, and the minimize button is on the corner, which makes
things really really awkward. I've used them on the left many times
before, however, when I always put them on the left I always put the
close button in the corner, and the minimize button in the inside.

So, my problem isn't the fact that they did it. My problem is the fact
they just swapped the three buttons and the Menu button/icon, and didn't
try to re-arrange it in a way that would put the close button on a
corner.

[Bug 542459] [NEW] Lucid Beta 1: nautilus or plymouth crashes on login, blank desktop, no panels

2010-03-20 Thread Thomas Keene
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Just upgraded to Beta 1 from Karmic. GRUB works fine, boot works fine,
login screen comes up fine. But when I log in, the desktop never loads
and it never shows the desktops or panels. All I have is my wallpaper,
there are no icons or panels. Alt+F1 does not work. Trying netbook-
edition does bring up the netbook interface, but not the top panel.

Alt+F2 still works, as do all other keyboard shortcuts. I can run
programs. Ctrl-Alt-Delete works too.

gnome-panel runs from shell. When I run it it shows a Application
problem notification for plymouthd closed unexpectedly. Also, Alt+F1
works while gnome-panel is running.

nautilus crashes immediately when run from shell. Spits out this:

~$ nautilus

(nautilus:2178): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Could not load desktop file
'/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop': Key file does not start with a group
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
tho...@klou:~$ nautilus

(nautilus:2193): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Could not load desktop file
'/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop': Key file does not start with a group
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
~$

When I use the panel menus (after bringing them up manually) to open a folder
under Places, I get a dialog that says:

Could not open location: file:///home/UserName No application is registered
as handling this file

My theory is that nautilus segfaults and messes up boot and every time it is
run, but this might also be related to plymouth.

I'm running an Acer Aspire 250, which has dual-booted happily with
Windows XP under Karmic.

[Bug 542490] [NEW] gdm fails to start on boot

plymouth boot screen goes away, desktop icons and the bars on top+bottom

I tried alt+sysreq+k and it reset back to the login screen, i logged in
and was left with the same thing.

This is only on a fully updated system, my apport information is from a

before i restarted my system, which as of the beta freeze was working

Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help make ubuntu better.
Can you please delete all you accounts and quit empathy and then try to
install the development release of empathy from the telepathy ppa
https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa and then try to connect.
Doing this solves the network error situation for most people. Please
let us know if the problem is still there.

[Bug 540390] Re: gvfsd-archive incorrectly mounts bluray/udf iso

2010-03-20 Thread Wouter van Wijk
I'm running Karmic. I tried to mount the Iso's via the Archive Mounter
in the contextmenu of the iso-files (in Nautilus). The iso is then
mounted as a drive on the desktop, but the bluray-iso's are empty. The
strange thing is that if I mount them via the commandline using the udf
flag, all is ok.

[Bug 542513] [NEW] Ambience panel gets grey border when resizing

2010-03-20 Thread robbanl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When making the panel bigger with the default theme ambience, the panel
gets a gray border that looks strange and doesn't integrate well with
icons and widgets.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Right click panel
2. Properties
3. In general make the size bigger than 24 and the gray border should appear.

There is a wrong entry in the /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop

Open this file in the text editor and move the top line that says
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=nautilus under the [Desktop Entry] section.
Nautilus should start again.

2010-03-20 Thread William Grant
gnome-panel and nautilus 1:2.29.92.1-0ubuntu3 are fixed and on
archive.ubuntu.com. Upgrading to those will restore desktop
functionality.

To temporarily recover from a blank desktop so you can run the upgrade,
press Ctrl+Alt+T to start a terminal, and run 'gnome-panel'.

[I'm currently grepping recent binaries to find anything else that needs
to be rebuilt, so it may be a while before some other missing
applications return.]

[Bug 542276] Re: Power (log out) icon is lost when top panel orientation is changed to Left or Right

2010-03-20 Thread Richard Bennett
Bit more investigation shows that the log out icon is there when the
panel is on the left, it's just that it's to the right of the user icon
and so is only displayed if the panel is wide enough. By default it will
fall off the edge of the panel.

I would have expected the user and logout icons to be independent of
each other, or at least for them to be placed vertically on top of one
another when the panel is vertical.

It looks like a similar problem affects the volume and mail icons. When
the panel is on the left only the volume icon can be seen.

Have changed the package the bug refers to from gnome-panel to
indicator-applet.

[Bug 521871] Re: 100% CPU when playing with or without crossfading

2010-03-20 Thread Lionel Dricot
I confirm that there's a huge performance problem with rhythmbox in
Lucid Beta 1.

Playing music a song with RB permanently consumes 20-30% of my CPU with
approximately 10% of my RAM according to top (I've 1Go of RAM).

I've disabled all plugins, crossfading and music library automatic
update. This decreased the RAM usage of approximately 50%. But the CPU
remains really high. Browsing Launchpad with Epiphany is not possible
with RB playing, the CPU fan is constantly running.

[Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-03-20 Thread Isak Frants
True. But
1. The toggle mode is still lost.
 - Yes why would I ever want to toggle back? Suddenly I might find myself more
comfortable browsing to the place anyway. Maybe I didn't remember it's correct
path by heart? Now I must click some random Back or Parent directory button or
browse somewhere to have it restored.

2. What kind of hand (or keyboard) am I supposed to have to feel comfortable to
do CTRL L with my left hand already on the keyboard? L for Location I know but
still.
 - The button was easy to reach with mouse pointer since I probably was
browsing normally when I needed the feature, thus it was positioned 3-4cm below
the button. Now I need to do some bizarre ninja move to find LCTRL L since it
doesn't toggle with RCTRL. Wouldn't CTRL G then be better?

If we're looking for UI elements that takes lot of space for something
thats not commonly used I'd say remove the Delete sidebar button and
replace it with the toggle button. I've never needed to delete the
sidebar and if I ever needed to I could easily do that from
View-Sidebar or even F9. Now I find myself deleting the sidebar instead
of toggling to text mode since the Delete sidebar button is where I'd
expect the toggle button to be.

[Bug 533261] Re: Indicator Applet should send scroll events

2010-03-20 Thread Sense Hofstede
Support for scroll events has been added to libindicator, indicator-
applet and indicator-sound, which I received as an update this morning.

I think that libappindicator will need an update to allow applications
to listen to scroll signals though. Also, we should come up with a
guideline for what is allowed for scroll activities since we want
consistency.

[Bug 542438] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2010-03-20 Thread Stephan Peijnik
I am having the same problem. It seems to be related with X-Ubuntu-
Gettext-Domain=nautilus getting added at the top of the
/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop file (actually all
nautilus*.desktop files I had a glance at look that way).

Also, starting nautilus from a terminal results in the following output
before dumping core:

(nautilus:12768): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Could not load desktop file
'/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop': Key file does not start with
a group

Removing the first line from /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop fixes
things for me, looks like something in the build system is messing up those
desktop files. Some applications seem to be able to cope with that though, but
at least nautilus is not.
Attached is the broken desktop file.

[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid

2010-03-20 Thread William Grant
I've completed a scan of all builds finished since the problematic cdbs
upload, and we fixed all of them in the initial upload batch. All
packages for all architectures except sparc and armel will be on
archive.ubuntu.com within the hour.

Again, please be careful when upgrading that your mirror has the fixed
versions of gnome-panel and nautilus -- look for -0ubuntu3 in the
version, not -0ubuntu2.

[Bug 542572] [NEW] gedit.desktop has 'X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gedit' in wrong place.

2010-03-20 Thread ubername

[Bug 542438] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

[Bug 542183] Re: [users-admin] Changing UID doesn't work

2010-03-20 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Much thanks for the report. This was indeed a mistake : we were
identifying users using their UID instead of their login. When changing
their UID, we weren't able to find the user to apply the new settings
to. It's now fixed upstream and will be available in the system-tools-
backends 2.10.0, for Lucid.

Please continue testing Lucid and reporting bugs! May I give you an
advice? Please stay very specific about the bug you report. For example,
here, the bug is not that you can't hide users in GDM: this is just a
consequence of the bug. The precise problem is that changing UID is not
working as it's supposed to be. This will help triagers and developers
to fix the bugs you find.

** Summary changed:
