[Bug 393138] Re: contact list oddities with xmonad

2010-05-23 Thread Mark Hepburn
It's still an issue, but only if you're not using empathy with the
indicator applet (for me). There's an option in the preferences, Show
incoming messages in the messaging menu, which if un-checked displays
an empathy icon in the notification panel instead of the indicator
applet.

If this is unchecked, then clicking the notification icon opens the
empathy window (just like pidgin), but clicking it again doesn't close
it and no other close action works either (eg, mod-shift-c from xmonad).

On the other hand, if this option is checked and the buddy list is
opened from the indicator messaging menu then it can be closed as
normal.

[Bug 584228] Re: revert client side decoration, breaks everything and then some

2010-05-23 Thread Kjell L.
Sorry I do not have a ppa set up.

*Just download the source with apt-get source gtk+2.0.
*Remove the diff and dsc file
*cd to debian/patches and edit the series file. Comment patch 064 with a # at
the beginning.

And then you build the package like you would. More information at MOTU
page. If it complains about gnome-pkg-tools then just install that
package.

It took around 1.5h to build everything.

[Bug 273294] Re: Rhythmbox can not use smb:// as library location

2010-05-23 Thread Christian C.
Hi,

I'm using a 64 bit Lucid and propose the following two workarounds:

1.) Mount only your mp3 directory and import the .gvfs folder into the
library (imports everything).

2.) As I'm not happy with the first solution I developed a second
approach which lets one import any folder or file from the network
share. First create a symbolic link for the .gvfs directory (e.g. ln -s
.gvfs/ gnome-shares). Then mount your mp3 share and import the desired
data from the symbolic link (gnome-shares/somedir/...). The only problem
now is that if one starts rhythmbox and the share is not mounted the
imported files will be displayed as missing. To overcome this issue I
edited the rhythmbox gnome menu (right click on menu - edit menu -
rhythmbox - edit) to mount my share before rhythmbox starts: bash -c
'gvfs-mount smb://yourDomain;youru...@yourserver/yourshare/; rhythmbox
%U'.

Hope it helps someone.

It would indeed be very nice if evince had just ANY method of being

whether to store settings per-file in the first place. I would like

I'm reading up on some of the compiz APIs now.  I'd really like to
incorporate some additional GUI mechanisms while I'm at it.  For
example, I think it would greatly enhance the functionality to have OS X
Dock-like 'zoom-on-mouse-over' to allow for easier and more accurate
selection/placement of windows within the applet.  I probably won't get
started coding until Monday, but hopefully I can have something to play

Ryan - here's my understanding of this issue.  I believe, at the heart
of the issue is that Compiz handles virtual desktops quite differently
 than Metacity.

Because of this, it fakes any apps using the Metacity virtual
desktop API into thinking there's only one virtual desktop.  I'm not
sure of the details of how it does this; review the thread on this bug
 for some leads (hopefully).

I haven't reviewed any of the patches that've been identified, because
they slipped my attention; I wasn't aware any coding work had been
done by anyone to attempt to address this.  I believe the key to doing
this right is to have the applet be compiz-aware, and use the proper
API if it's running; it'll be interesting to see what the patches do.

Looking forward to collaborating with you on a solution.

still can't change the brightness of my screen with the brightness-
applet. On a sidenote, the applet shows a red not-available-circle
across the icon, so I guess some check for reading the current
brightness failed. This is backed up through the fact, that the applet's
slider is on 0 (absolutely down), while my screen's brightness is on a
high setting.

[Bug 559692] Re: MSN authentication error if email ID is @superig

2010-05-23 Thread Olivier Le Thanh Duong
Hey,
sorry for the late answer, I hav been busy with work recently so I couldn't
work a whole lot on butterfly and papyon
First for Fabio problem the password are effectively limited to 16 characters,
the official client crop them before sending them, would be easy to do the same
in papyon.
For Kemp problem we probably escape some of theses chars wrongly, to fix this
we would probably have to check with wireshark how the officials clients do it
or check the sources of other free client.

[Bug 581302] Re: gdm crash on boot but works with 'sudo gdm' after command line login

2010-05-23 Thread Didier DOMINE
initctl status gdm gives : gdm stop/waiting . I've also attached the
file /etc/init/gdm.conf

very rarely the computer init is ok, most of the time it ends on command
line mode asking login and password, then back to command line (startx
needed, and then again password to unlock when in gnome). I suspect
something related to mouse movement, eg if I move the mouse during init
it fails, if I do not move the mouse during init it is okay, but really
not sure, I'll try to check this point and then go back to you there.

[Bug 559692] Re: MSN authentication error if email ID is @superig

2010-05-23 Thread Kemp
Taking a hint from your mention of maximum password length, I took a
look around at mine (as I use 20 character passwords by default). It
seems that when I paste a new password into the hotmail site, the entry
box cuts it down to 16 characters. I noticed this when I was changing it
to 16 characters to test just now and my old and new passwords pasted in
at the same length. I have a suspicion therefore that me and Fabio have
been encountering the same problem, and that both the official client
and pidgin have been truncating my password before sending it (thus why
they both succeeded). I will be able to check this later today and get
back to you. If that is the issue then I apologise for sending you down
the wrong path with the special characters. It would probably have
helped me if the hotmail site had mentioned any sort of length limit
instead of just silently correcting behind the scenes.

[Bug 334082] Re: Most mp3 files listed with Unknown length

2010-05-23 Thread Richard Davies
I have my mp3's on Samba server which is then mapped on each of my
computers.

Laptop with 10.4 works fine, all tracks have durations - no issues at
all.

Desktop with 10.4 has tracks with missing duration and bitrate.

As you expect mp3info shows correct duration on one of those files. I
have tried editing the ID3 tags with EasyTag and Rhythmbox but no
change.

Hope this helps

Oh, Desktop was an upgraded install not a fresh install as it was with
the laptop.

However I did create a new home folder for this user to no stored
settings.

Ah, that was what I feared: your bug is different from the password-less
issue. So let's say the latter is bug 525642, and deal with your problem
here. What does 'ps x|grep keyring' return, with and without autologin
enabled? What errors do you get in /var/log/auth.log in both cases?

E.g. I cannot choose which workspace/pane my windowed application opens in
- it's always the current one. E.g both

xterm -display :0
xterm -display :0.0

open a window in the current workspace but

xterm -display :0.1

fails with an error. In my opinion

xterm -display :0

should best open in the first (or, better, current) workspace on the current
X server

xterm -display :0.0

should open in the 1st workspace and

xterm -display :0.1

should open in the 2nd etc

Even if you fix the current problem the original hack remains. Workspaces
should have been implemented differently. Having said that I am very much
in favour of a fix to the hack rather than the current situation.

selection/placement of windows within the applet. I probably won't get
started coding until Monday, but hopefully I can have something to play

I haven't reviewed any of the patches that've been identified, because

[Bug 457816] Re: cannot play Quicktime media

2010-05-23 Thread John Rose
For Lucid, solution to play Quicktime videos (including URL previously referred
to is:
-Close Firefox.
-Delete the plugins registry file. That should be in your
~/.mozilla/firefox/profile (like .default) folder, where ~/.mozilla
is generally /home/yourname/.mozilla. Delete the file pluginreg.dat, which
firefox will recreate when it starts.
-Using Synaptic Package Manager, ensure that the multiverse repository is
enabled.
-Remove the totem mozilla plugin named totem-mozilla.
-Install gecko-mediaplayer, which automatically installs all of the mplayer
goodness as well.
PS I have vlc installed (for playing of DVDs as it's the only app that always
works for that) but I do not have the vlc-mozilla-plugin package installed.

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2010-05-23 Thread Erbs
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 160264 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160264

The black screen problem is still alive! (Core i3 530 with integrated
graphics)

Reliable workaround:

1. For every user on the machine repeat step 2, 3 and 4

2. go to System, Settings, Keyboard Shortcuts

3. add a shortcut
name: e.g. Fix black screen
command: xgamma -gamma 1.0

4. assign a combination: e.g. Crtl+Esc

Whenever you expirience the problem, do the following:

- type in the password of the user you want to switch to

- apply the keyboard shortcut (in my case Crtl+Esc)

That already saved me at least a hunderd times.

Good luck!

I tried adding gtk-auto-mnemonics = 0 to a new file balled .gtkrc-2.0 in

(thought it was worth a try based on some of the things I'd read on the
net it sounded like it would honor the setting).

Changing from Radiance to Human fixes the issue. Also you can add the
standard Menu Bar to the Panel and that one does work with the new
themes. Normally I keep that one off since the words Applications,
Places, System takes up too much horizontal space and I use the one
called Main Menu which just shows the Ubuntu icon.

Re: [Bug 150690] Re: Can't drag a window to another workspace

2010-05-23 Thread Paul Beardsell
I'm not sure I would change hardly a word of my posting. It seems to me the
multi-monitor Unix systems I was lucky enough to work on sometimes in the
1990's could have been implemented just as poorly as the multi-workspace
idea we have in Gnome and similar on Linux. But they were not. If I wanted
an app's display to open on a particular workspace on a monitor I could do
so by specifying '-display :0.3' or to choose a particular monitor I
could use '-display :3'. We miss a trick or two now. And whereas
implmentation details are left unspecified the intention is clear. Where
and when do we get the opportunity to use anything other than :0.0 on a
modern Linux box, now? If that was sorted then this bug would not exist in
its current form i.e. with a workaround simply being to disable Compiz.

[Bug 564167] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device

2010-05-23 Thread Oris
In my Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx release installation, storage devices are
not automatically mounted after hotplug. I am necessary going to
Computer and select the device which I want to mount.

But after disconnect and reconnect with my user account, when I plugging
an usb device, this one is correctly automatically mounted. And in
Places menu , I correctly have the list of my differents others
partitions (ntfs).

[Bug 582991] Re: Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text)

2010-05-23 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Hi there. I discovered I'm able to recover from the problem with the command
kill -HUP `pidof gnome-panel`. This way the panel refreshes with all the
stuff.

However, today a new sympton happens. After the first login, the gnome-
panel works normally. But after some time, the me-menu and the shudown-
menu vanished. So I performed the kill -HUP command to restore them

It seems to be a real bug.

Ciao from Italy.

To further add to this issue: If you delete the default panel and
replace it, you can no longer move an applet round the screen and make
any invisible and unclickable panels appear. You need to reinstall
Gnome and reset to get the original panel back.

[Bug 521766] Re: Theme not applied on startup

2010-05-23 Thread Zeppe
I'm reopening this bug, it has been with me for ages, I decided to
investigate it recently, I enabled apport but it didn't intercept any
crash (I suspect so at least, since it didn't pop-up as it usually
does). As noted above, the problem should be related to gnome-settings-
daemon, last time I experienced the bug (5 min ago) the process wasn't
running, and launching it again solved the problem (i.e., the theme got
loaded).

May it be that gnome-settings-daemon crashes before apport gets started?
How can I work around this?

Thank you for the suggestions.

Zeppe

[Bug 584692] [NEW] GstDecodeBin2: This appears to be a text file

2010-05-23 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I often play music albums by opening the directory they are in in Totem,
I even have that set as an open-with action. Yes, there is Rhythmbox,
but I do play albums this way over SSH from servers etc, as well as I
like this way of playing music now. :)

If there is an unknown text file in the same directory, it gets added to
the playlist anyway, AND totem will stop playback on this file with the
error GstDecodeBin2: This appears to be a text file. Highly annoying
when you have to get up and go to the computer just to click the warning
away and delete this entry from the playlist manually.

Images, for instance, gets ignored and are not added in this way.

I propose that either:

1. Unknown text files should not be added to the playlist, or, if that's hard
to do:
2. Such files should just be silently skipped when playing
