[Bug 588140] [NEW] Gstreamer ugly codec doesn't play all .asf videos

2010-06-01 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Public bug reported:

I think that there are different versions of .asf files (8,9,...).
Gstreamer is probably not compatible with the newest or the older
versions. But it's a sheer guess. Here are 2 files, one of them plays in
Totem 2.30 (and in any other program), the other one not, giving me this
message after doing a an unsuccessful search for codecs:

No packages with the requested plugins found

The requested plugins are:

audio/x-asf-unknown decoder

It plays something then, but it's soundless and very low quality. When I
compare the 2 files' properties it gives me different codecs for them,
however it says the both of them are the same ASF video (video/x-ms-
asf) formats. The problem affects the Totem and Mplayer browser plugins
too. (Bloody Windows formats...)

You're probably aware of this, I'm posting this just for the case...
Thanks!

2010-06-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
Please elaborate on the problem as you see it. You were able to hide
the xchat-gnome window previously? I don't use empathy so just like
empathy does doesn't really make your bug report clear.

Also, I tend to prefer that when I close xchat-gnome, that it actually
closes, so if you wish it to do this other behavior instead, some added
justification wouldn't hurt.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

2010-06-01 Thread unggnu
I think it is interesting that KDE4 doesn't seem to have this problems
again (GNOME Panel icons move apparently randomly on session start in
some situations) at least with Wine and some other apps which have a
problem with Gnome/GTK. And the icons are transparent around and I mean
really transparent since the default theme has a transparent panel and
not just a color gradient.

Re: [Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

2010-06-01 Thread Chow Loong Jin
On Tue, Jun 1, 2010 at 1:41 PM, Justin Cope jstn8...@gmail.com wrote:
Never filed a bug report, hope this is correct.  I've been tracking this
and not seen this mentioned (that I can remember) so perhaps it will
 shed some light.

I have solid backgrounds on my Firestarter, VLC, and Banshee icons.  I
have since installed RGBA transparency on Ubuntu 10.04.  Once in use the
three above tray icons were corrected in appearance - that is, they
gained a clear background - and all other icons were screwed up.  The
icons that were fine, like Miro, Network Monitor Applet, Parcellite,
Dropbox, and so on all gained a dark gray background.

Since this was even uglier than before I blacklisted the notification
area from using rgba transparency and everything returned to normal.

I'm no expert, but the before mentioned alpha transparency issue
appears to be simply a difference between Ubuntu's pseudo transparency
and the real transparency of rgba.  I have found no way to make the
two work together in the notification area, it's one or the other I
guess, but it's a clear line to the prblem.  Maybe in 10.10, when Ubuntu
will supposedly have rgba by default it will be fixed?

I'm interested to know more about this. What do you mean by installed
RGBA transparency on Ubuntu 10.04? This can probably shed some light
on exactly what is going on, and exactly what needs to be done to fix
this issue.

[Bug 588155] [NEW] [lucid] randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start

2010-06-01 Thread H3g3m0n
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Randomly when logging in, rather than the normal Ambiance theme I get a
default default GTK theme on the gnome-panel.

There is no gnome-settings-daemon listed in the processes.

Going in the the Appearance seems to start it up, and the theme is
applied to the gnome-panel. I need to kill nautilus for it to be
rethemed.

This is happening on 2 different computer systems. Both AMD64 with
nvidia graphics cards (using the proprietary driver), otherwise with
fairly different hardware.

There was another bug for this, with several other people reporting the same
issue however it seems to have been closed as 'incomplete'.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/312501

I also sometimes notice the long delay on login mentioned in the above
bug, (basically the wallpaper loads then it just sits there doing
nothing, then the panels come in). Not sure if it has anything to do
with the gnome-settings-daemon though (sometimes the panels come in
fine).

I have the following in xsession-errors:
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 1177 error_code 8 request_code 3 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2010-06-01 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. And thanks to the feedback
from the Accessibility team.
However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu
install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug
can't be addressed as part of this project.

As mentioned earlier,
- Trash applet needs fixing to properly be read as Trash

- Adding one more item to the Places menu would be duplicating the trash applet
for a default install.
- If the trash is frequented by a user often , it can be easily bookmarked [
added to the Places menu ].
- Citing inconsistency with Go menu is not a valid argument , since the
Places menu has items which are not present in the Go menu and vice-versa.

[Bug 576698] Re: gnome-power-manager hibernates instead of suspending on idle

2010-06-01 Thread gdi2k
Thanks for the workaround, this was annoying me as my laptop takes
forever to struggle out of hibernation!

I agree that the language is ambiguous. In the rest of the dialog box,
suspend or hibernate are used explicitly - sleep is more of a Windows
word I think. I don't mind which terminology is used, but it should be
consistent throughout.

It would also be nice if it were possible to choose whether to suspend
or hibernate, as well as the period of idleness.

But in any case, even if the box is left unmodified, it should suspend
by default, not hibernate.

2010-06-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package udisks - 1.0.1-2

---
udisks (1.0.1-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Add 00git-vfat-showexec.patch: Enable the showexec vfat mount option, to
avoid data files being executable (which causes confusing question dialogs
in nautilus which only have one sensible answer). Patch taken from
upstream git head. (LP: #14335)
  * Add 00git-dont-probe-nondata-cdroms.patch: Don't probe non-data CD-ROMs
for partition tables. Patch taken from upstream git head.

[Bug 403135]

2010-06-01 Thread Justin Cope
Chow Loong Jin https://launchpad.net/%7Ehyperair wrote:

I'm interested to know more about this. What do you mean by installed
RGBA transparency on Ubuntu 10.04? This can probably shed some light
on exactly what is going on, and exactly what needs to be done to fix
this issue.

This could be better explained on the Ubuntu wiki here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/RgbaGtkWithPPA/.
Here
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/05/enable-rgba-transparency-in-ubuntu-910.html
is installation instructions.

Here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4367247/rgba-enabled.png is a screenshot
of my desktop running rgba (notice the Firestarter icon is wrong).

Please note that this is NOT a solution to this bug and this software is
very temperamental. If you install it expect lots of issue fixing.

Also, since my last post I can only reproduce the Banshee icon being
fixed, not the vlc or Firestarter icons. I have only tried once more,
as I have to log in and out and whatnot. However, vlc is blacklisted
from using rgba, Banshee and Firestarter are not. There are lots of
variables at work here and I am not a developer. I can confirm that
upon first install of rgba transparency all three afore mentioned icons
were corrected. Now, a week or so later, with much configuration
editing and theme tweaking, only the Banshee icon is displayed correctly.

What this has to do with this bug I don't know specifically, but if I
had to guess, it would be that gnome-panel simply doesn't accept
whatever display standards these programs use for their tray icons by
default. Why is this so hard to fix? You got me, but these are
commonly used programs and this problem has been persistent through the
two versions of Ubuntu I've used, including this LTS offering. Seems
ridiculous to me.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

2010-06-01 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
How to make the tray icon transparent depends on the theme. If the tray
icon area uses a uniform background color, then the tray icon background
can simply be filled with the same color. That is what happens with
old desktop themes, and works in pretty much any application.

However, if the tray icon area background is _not_ uniform, then
composition is required, so that the icons are really transparent. To
that end, applications must create an X window for they tray icon, that
uses the ARGB X11 visual. Unfortunately, some applications hence fail to
do that. Instead, they use the old method and fill the background of
their tray icon with an uniform background color.

I know at least VLC and Skype fall in this category. In both cases, ARGB
visuals are disabled due to complications with video rendering, namely
the XVideo extension cannot be used with ARGB visuals. In principle,
this is not an issue: XVideo is used for the main application video
rendering window, not for the tray icon window. X11 allows an
application to use different visuals for different windows. However, to
my knowledge, the Qt4 GUI library does not expose this feature of X11,
and hence ARGB has to be disabled not just for the video widget, but for
all widgets including the tray icon.

[Bug 588250] [NEW] Icon View exposes wrong accessibility information

2010-06-01 Thread Ara Pulido
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Icon View exposes wrong a11y information about the position of the
icons.

Way to reproduce:

 1. Open a folder in nautilus containing several icons
 2. Open accerciser (if not installed, install it by 'sudo apt-get install
accerciser')
 3. Browse the accessibility information for that folder
 4. Accerciser, when navigating through the widgets, it highlights them in red.
When selecting any icon, instead of highlighting the icon, it highlights an
area on the top left of the icon. It seems like the position is not being
correctly exposed.

One of the problems with this, from a QA point of view, is that we
cannot create automated test for this interface

[Bug 588298] [NEW] non-user-friendly preferences string: Top Posting Option (not Recommended)

2010-06-01 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution has under Edit/Preferences/Composer Preferences the following:
'Top Posting Option (Not Recommened)'. While I would certainly not
enable the option personally, it seems rather non-Ubuntu-like to have
the '(Not Recommended)'. Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like
a developer asserting his/her preference on bottom-posting rather than
any 'real' issue with the functionality. I suggest the default remain
the same but the '(Not Recommended)' be removed.

[Bug 232469] Re: wget does not use network proxy in some cases

2010-06-01 Thread Erlan Sergaziev
There seems to be two bugs discussed here.
One is related to no_proxy environment variable having an extraneous comma at
the end.
This bug exists in both 64 and 32 bit versions confirmed (I use 64 bit while
two of my colleagues - 32 bit).

The other one has to do with http_proxy not being passed on by sudo. This
leads to apt commands failing to connect.
This concerns adding apt repository and repository public key through command
line and some other command line package operations. This indeed affects 64 bit
edition only.

On a separate note, I installed Fedora 13 and after configuring proxy in gnome
proxy settings and a restart both GUI and command line tools worked like a
charm. Come on, Ubuntu, you don't have to be more difficult than Fedora in
ease of use :)
No offense intended.

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-01 Thread Mark Rowan
I've struggled to get a backtrace as gdb hangs when using it against a
running gnome-settings-daemon PID (not even responding to Ctrl+C), but
when killing all running gnome-settings-daemon processes and then
starting gdb with a new gnome-settings-daemon process, I got the
following results:

GNU gdb (GDB) 7.1-ubuntu
Copyright (C) 2010 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html
This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it.
There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. Type show copying

This GDB was configured as i486-linux-gnu.
For bug reporting instructions, please see:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/...
Reading symbols from /usr/bin/gnome-settings-daemon...(no debugging symbols
found)...done.
(gdb) handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint

SIG33 NoNo Yes Real-time event 33
(gdb) set pagination 0
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/bin/gnome-settings-daemon
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]

** At this point, I added a new keyboard layout to the Keyboard
Preferences dialogue and the CPU usage went up to 100% until I removed
the new layout. I then executed 'killall gnome-settings-daemon' from a
terminal.

Program exited normally.
(gdb) backtrace full
No stack.
(gdb) info registers
The program has no registers now.
(gdb)

** At this point, after realising that gdb didn't seem to have picked anything
up, I added a new keyboard layout again in the Keyboard Preferences dialogue.
The CPU usage went up to 100% and the following two lines were output from gdb:

(gnome-settings-daemon:25101): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple:
assertion `dest_width 0' failed

(gnome-settings-daemon:25101): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref:
assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

** After this I attempted to use Ctrl+C to kill the process inside gdb, but at
this point gdb hung and I was unable to continue debugging. I hope the above
two lines are of some use. Please inform me of how I might be able to generate
a proper stack trace if not.

[Bug 588250] Re: Icon View exposes wrong accessibility information

Changing back to nautilus.

For the record, this does not only happen with accerciser, but with any

reproduce.

I.e. If you use orca and hover over an icon, orca reads something
different (as it is getting the wrong information)

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-01 Thread Mark Rowan
To clarify, the 'Program exited normally' as soon as it had run and re-
drawn the window settings correctly. So I'm not sure even if gdb was
picking up the action of me adding a new keyboard layout mentioned in my
first comment, above.

But as I said, every time I try to kill the running gnome-settings-
daemon from within gdb, gdb hangs making it impossible to proceed any
further in generating a backtrace.

[Bug 563072] Re: Empathy uses telepathy-haze instead of telepathy-sofiasip to provide SIP functionality

voila, new settings and a working empathy sip!

This issue is active in lucid lynx, still. The problem is really just
that the wrong software is installed by default in empathy.

What brought me to this thread: Could not use SIP in empathy: Account was

[Bug 587689] Re: No window decoration if Visual Effects = None

2010-06-01 Thread Tony Pursell
Hi Leo

Yes, I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid, and after that upgrade I could not
boot normally (only in rescue mode using a Karmic kernel and then only
in a console). So the /home that I retained, when I re-installed, was
from that dist-upgrade.

In /home I have profiles for myself and my wife. So I tried my wife's
login and there is no problem with the Window Decoration. It is there
and Visual Effects are set to None. My wife does not use this Ubuntu
installation, so her profile is very much the default one that was
installed when I had this PC in Sept 06.

Do you want me to set up a completely new profile?

Tony

[Bug 323335] Re: Evolution fails to display HTML email formatted

2010-06-01 Thread Karim Fathi
I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 10.04 32bits;

The email shows with [?] as described in the previews comments

The only workaround I found is to go View / Character Encoding and chose
something other than Default like UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1; once I do that,
the text appear correctly in the email but in the other hand if I reply
to some of those messages, the receiver got a scrambled email as shown
