I wouldn't call a thicker border less beautiful. In fact, I have tried increasing the border size in the Ambiance theme and quite like the result from both an aesthetic and a usability standpoint. [Bug 483258] Re: Sleep and lid buttons don't work in Karmic
@Nolan I've been using Kubuntu so it may be that we are not talking about the same issue. My problem started when I installed Karmic and continued when I upgraded to Lucid, up until today when I discovered that it was simply a question of changing the lid-close action in the Ubuntu power management settings. I'd done a clean install of Karmic, so this must obviously have been the default. I never thought to check something that in hindsight should have been so obvious because it never occurred to me that someone might set lock the screen as the lid-closing action. It is something no one in their right mind would do unless they thought burnt-out computers made nice doorstops. So if the same default is still being applied in Lucid, could I suggest that this default is the bug? It is entirely conceivable that a new user could innocently put the lid down in a hurry, expecting the behaviour they were used to in Windows, and cook their machine. -- Sleep and lid buttons don't work in Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/483258 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 596559] [NEW] Lost text file contents due to desktop bug - change autorecover defaults!
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit Just recently updated to Lucid Lynx with a clean install. While authoring a text file full of project notes, my laptop went into some kind of sleep state (blank screen) and I was unable to return to the desktop without a hard shutdown in between. After rebooting I was shocked to discover that Gedit had abandoned all the text I was working on, and hadn't saved it anywhere! Quite a lot of important thoughts on a project plan and a temporary notes file are now lost, presumably due to a design decision to save those precious storage bytes on my harddrive. However, I feel more precious about my data than my bytes. I had trusted to gedit as an aide-memoire and it will be very hard for me to recover all of the notes from my head, since I'm not a computer. I don't know how recently the file was manually saved or which changes are now missing. My laptop on the other hand IS a computer. I would expect software to have smart defaults, so the computer reliably and periodically carries out a common-sense action, such as creating an auto-recovery file in case of a crash. Computers help to overcome human frailties. For example I forget to turn off 'please lose my data mode' in gedit after each reinstall or desktop migration. I'm now waiting for this to bite me on my work laptop (Karmic) if I don't forget to change the config when I go in on Monday. Could I suggest that the default is to leave 'lose your data mode' off, leaving it an option for people who have less than 10k free space on their hard-drive, photographic memories, or a tic which makes them hit CTRL-S every 10 minutes, to turn the mode back on again. ** Affects: gedit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Lost text file contents due to desktop bug - change autorecover defaults! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/596559 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gedit in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Obviously there's legal issues surrounding encryption but is important to provide the user with that knowledge. num = BVW_ERROR_DVD_ENCRYPTED; message = g_strdup (_(The source seems encrypted and can't be read. Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without libdvdcss?)); Just doesn't cut it because it is less than useful in providing newbie friendly information. Something like essage = g_strdup (_(The source you're attempting to view seems to be encrypted and therefore can't be read. It is probably a commercial DVD. Please see: XYZ for more information regarding the issues involved.)); XYZ in this case would probably best link to the Ubuntu RestrictedFormats wiki in Ubuntu's specific case. This is probably the most common issue I get asked about by new Linux users and a small change like this could prevent a lot of headaches. Rich, you mentioned getting a fix committed.. any word on this? I don't ask to be pushy I just know what a difference in usability this would make for new users. [Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Christian, I use solid panel background colour, which is semi- transparent. However, what I mentioned in comment #111 is not true any more, I've seen the corruption already twice since then... Moreover, I've even seen another type of corruption, described in my comment #157, so using my theme is, sadly, not a solution. Just to test it, for 1 week I was using the default theme and our problem didn't appear there, I only saw it recently again. So it looks like it has nothing in common with themes. However, a little helpful detail: Using semi-transparent panel background excludes the main type of corruption for me, when the affected icon is a doubled one of a neighbouring icon. I've only seen the one when the icon is covered by a solid colour or the other one for which there's a screenshot in #157. -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 596596] [NEW] Battery meter is erratic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager I'm using 10.4 LTS Netbook Edition on a Gateway LT2104U netbook. Occasionally, and seemingly without reason, the battery meter suddenly reads 1.0 percent left and the message appears that the system is going to hibernate right now (and quickly does so). This happens regardless of how full the battery actually is (it's happened with a fully charged battery, and with a half-charged battery). It appears to happen only on battery power and not when plugged in to AC power. When this happens, I can immediately turn the system back on and use it normally. Re: [Bug 58205] Re: Should provide Right-Click-Format...
Hi David! I'm one of those who requested this behavior. I was stunned by the fact that, as a normal user, I couldn't do such simple tasks as formatting my usb memory stick which had stopped working. In a modern system, you should be able to right click and select Format... and just do it. If you don't like this behaviour, that's a shame, as it is just what Ubuntu represents to me - an easy to use system, where things just work =) Mikko Saarinen P.S. I put in a USB drive and I can right-click format that drive *without* any further restriction or Authorisation request, so yes I do think that is a security problem. [Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus
To some people who think Delete is just a Move to Trash bin: Suppose that you have 1500+ items in your trash bin. You pressed DEL without noticing which file it was. Objectively speaking, do you still think it is a reasonable behavior? You'll understand how irritating this is if you commit and feel the pain. (As I did just now on a Lucid 32bit Desktop.) If one wants to Move to the Trash bin, he will simply drag and drop it to the waste bin. I'm not saying they are short-sighted, but it would be really nice to consider other people's view and think what could be the possible outcomes if not fixed. And who simply says because it is Not Windows does not seem to be logical answer to me - just emotional. As you could see from the above example, confirmation dialogue should be quite practical for many people, especially for people who want to move to the Linux world from Windows. If it makes Ubuntu better, why not accept and fix it? People who don't like this functionality could simply turn it off. [Bug 481312] Re: Laptop suspends when I connect/disconnect AC
My patched version should only have the following effect: when you plug in the machine, it should not execute the lid-closed action. It will probably still execute it when you unplug it (which is not really a bug in g-p-m, it's a bug in upower). So you all are saying that plugging it in still always results in lid-close action anyway? If so, I'll have to modify my patch to include more logging to figure out what's going wrong I guess. Berend: sorry about the version issue. The problem is that my version # was the same as the next one to be released by Ubuntu. [Bug 95853] Re: Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus
Suppose that you have 1500+ items in your trash bin. You pressed DEL without noticing which file it was. A warning for every single move-to-trash operation to fix this problematic usecase is implementing a cruel workaround instead of fixing the issues (in this case trash view usability). In fact, current Nautilus git master has trashed-on column in list view, and (irrespective of the view) sorts the trashcan by reversed deletion date by default. So, the question Which file did I just delete is pretty simple to answer, no matter how many million files you have in your trashcan: It's the topmost. -- Add an option to get a confirmation dialog before deleting files in Nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95853 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 592592] Re: Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s
Hi Robert, I'm sorry you're having difficulties in applying my workaround to your environment. I suggest you try to find out whether halevt functions properly by running it in the foreground: $ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt stop $ sudo -u halevt halevt -fig plugdev Now if you press the brightness buttons you should see hal events on your screen. In my case this is something like: Condition: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input,ButtonPressed (brightness-down) Condition: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input,ButtonPressed (brightness-up) If that's the case then please check again whether you've really correctly edited both (halevt and sudo) configuration files to represent your local file paths and server name. You might have to read the corresponding man pages. (Sorry if I'm explaining the obvious, you probably did that already...) If the events look differently then you may have to change your halevt.xml accordingly. If you don't get any events then - bad luck. You won't be able to use my workaround. At least not without further investigation why the events are not triggered. I didn't have to configure anything to get the HAL events. Finally don't forget to switch your halevt daemon back on: $ sudo /etc/init.d/halevt start If you've checked all that and it still doesn't work then I'm afraid I've no clue where you could look further. :-( -- Brightness adjustment doesn't work for HP ProBook 4720s https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/592592 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 596697] [NEW] Cannot burn data CD with Brasero or from Nautilus
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero After upgrading from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx, I cannot burn a data CD at all. I have not tried audio CD or DVDs. When I drag files and folders into the Nautilus CD burn window (burn:///), folders appear but files do not. In Brasero all appear. During the phase where Brasero estimates the size of the burn, dialogue boxes appear asking me such things as Do you really want to include the file 'en' which has 7 child directories. It then goes on to explain that some operating systems won't be able to read the resulting CD but that Linux can. I have no file or folder called en. Each time I try it comes up with a different file or folder name, which again does not exist. At some stage it asks me if I want long file names truncated for MS Windows compatibility. I answer Yes. Finally, when it is ready to burn a box appears asking me whether I really want to go ahead and burn a disc with filenames that are not Windows compatible. If I answer, Yes, go ahead, an error box appears saying an (unspecified) error occurred and that it is unable to burn the CD. It all worked fine in Hardy Heron. The hardware is exactly the same.
