[Bug 603852] Re: package python-gmenu 2.30.0-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-07-11 Thread Loïc Minier
Are you upgrading with aptitude?

I got the same issue upgrading because a trigger was activated while
upgrading python2.6/python2.6-minimal; the python2.6 updates were moving
shutil across packages.

python2.6 correctly depends on python2.6-minimal (= ${binary:Version}),
yet python2.6 was unpacked before python2.6-minimal.

I wonder if this is an aptitude bug or some dep loop somewhere, but I
couldn't find the latter.

[Bug 604222] [NEW] USB mouse doesn't respond sometime on session start

2010-07-11 Thread vak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

approximately every 20th login into gnome session I find that mouse
doesn't respond. The laser light is beaming OK though. It is easily
fixed by unplugging and plugin again in the mouse's USB connector.

[Bug 599785] Re: Gimp's description is too confusing

2010-07-11 Thread Vish
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gimp

Here's The Gimp description in the software center:

GIMP lets you draw, paint, edit images, and much more! GIMP includes
the functionality and plug-ins of other famous image editing and
  processing programs.

If you'd like to be able to open files remotely (like over HTTP or FTP),
  install the gvfs-backends package.

If you'd like to use a MIDI device as an input controller in GIMP,
install libasound2 and read the how-to at
  /usr/share/doc/gimp/README.MIDI

If you'd like to be able to read and write PostScript files from GIMP,
  install the ghostscript package.

As you can see, the majority of the text is geeky.
+
+ [Suggested description]
+ -
+ GIMP is an advanced picture editor. You can use it to edit, enhance,
+ and retouch photos and scans, create drawings, and make your own images.
+ Lots of tools are available; you can sharpen and resize photos, and
+ remove dust and red-eyes, for example.
+
+ It has a large collection of professional-level editing tools and
+ filters, similar to the ones you might find in PhotoShop. Numerous
+ fine-control settings and features like layers, paths, masks, and
+ scripting give you total control over your images.
+
+ Many image file formats are supported, including JPEG, PhotoShop (.psd),

[Bug 599785] Re: Gimp's description is too confusing

2010-07-11 Thread Sam L.
Phil's suggestion is good. It gives a description that is both
informative and not confusing. Though I'd suggest moving It can also be
used to scan and print photos. to the top paragraph rather than having
it tacked on to the end of the paragraph discussing file-type support.
So, like this:

GIMP is an advanced picture editor. You can use it to edit, enhance,
and retouch photos and scans, create drawings, and make your own images.
Lots of tools are available; you can sharpen and resize photos, and
remove dust and red-eyes, for example. It can also be used to scan and print

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2010-07-11 Thread Bruce R
It's nice to be able to offer a solution for a change.
The fault lies not with GStreamer, but with a failure to provide the wrong
command string or 'profile' for LAME to execute.
For the CD Quality MP3 Profile, Edit it to read as follows :
audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=1 vbr=4
vbr-min-bitrate=32 vbr-max-bitrate=320 vbr-quality=3 ! id3v2mux
This will result in what I call 'Super MP3' quality, average 171Kbps, ranging
from 32-320Kbps, in accordance with another forum audio expert's
recommendations, back when I researched sound-juicer as a suitable Linux
ripping tool, which was around the time of Ubuntu 7.10 and LinuxMint-4.
As I recall, the mode=1 entry ensures stereo channel separation, the vbr=4
entry ensures correct operation with the old version of LAME then being used,
the critical vbr-min and vbr-max commands set the range of compression desired
and the quality command merely adds a subtle enhancement,
Note that this also works with other distros, especially PCLinuxOS.
Regarding Scott Bronson's comment, by also setting Preferences to Eject after
extracting and Open music folder and running it while using a fast Internet
connection for automatic tracks data download, it can be a quite fast process
of just putting a CD into the preferences optical drive, clicking on Extract
and waiting for the disc to be ejected.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-07-11 Thread Manuel Bua
I'm sorry for you Mahendra, but if you are bothered by these meaningful
and useful bug reports you shouldn't read them at all, and maybe
unsubscribe from the bug: we all know it happens then stop and then
happens again, but reporting anomalies and behaviors is just the minimum
we, users, can do to let developers pinpoint the whys and the hows
of the problem; also, you are saying the problem happens, stops and
happens again but i wonder how you could be able to say that if we
really stopped to report it each time it starts and stops. I think in
these cases collecting a lot of data and experiences *is* a lot more
productive than anything else and i feel this also happens to be the
protocol being used right now on Launchpad..

corruption some of you may have already seen: this happened as soon as i

[Bug 604238] [NEW] notebook new battery data, corrupted (inherited from old one)

2010-07-11 Thread sterios prosiniklis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

not sure if this bug has to be reported against gnome-power-manager...

energy-full: 37.407 Wh
energy-full-design: 48.84 Wh

energy-full value of the new battery is the same of the old one.

1.in a new notebook-new battery (obtained through warranty) i used the old hard
disk to boot, with 9.04 installed.
2.Immediately after, i performed a clean install of 9.10, keeping old home.
3.some time later upgraded to 10.04
4.finally performed a clean install -keeping old home- of 10.04

In all these passages the energy-full value is the one of the old battery,
same value is being reported even when i use a live cd.

seems that some how this value
corrupted new battery data in BIOS or in the battery itself in the
aforementioned passage 1

and keeping the same settings as mentioned in SOLVED section of
http://pokazywarka.pl/bug617754/#zdjecie508551, I am able to make my
voip account with voipbuster.com work.

In addition to that, I realised you can actually make and receive calls
if you put in the STUN server name, in my case it was
stun.voipbuster.com; though I have to say that, the whole SIP experience
with empathy is far not stable.

At least in my case, I have had to restart empathy several times, so
that I will get the incoming calls from the voipbuster client installed
on a windows pc. Other times, the I couldn't hear anything from the
caller, sometimes the caller couldn't hear anything from my side. I am
not sure, whether this was due to the buggy voipbuster client!

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2010-07-11 Thread Bruce R
Sorry guys, some more information. Having just today re-checked it out, I can
advise that for Ubuntu and LinuxMint, you also need gstreamer LAME plugins etc
installed, most easily achieved by adding ubuntu-restricted-extras, which I am
in the habit of always doing, if only to get MicroSoft Core Fonts installed, to
ease cross-platform interoperation.
For the real techies amongst you, gst-inspect lame will then lead you on to the
LAME plugin commands that are applicable to that specific implementation of
Linux LAME, so have fun !

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-07-11 Thread slayer
Maybe I am starting to figure out something...
I've got a dual monitor configuration (not xinerama) and, since i installed the
second monitor, this bug we're talking about always happened on the left one
(the principal).
Interestingly the icons on top right are not the same: wireless is present only
in the left monitor, the email and the audio icon only on the right.
more interestingly some of the icons are duplicated, as the shutdown button and
the session indicator button.

1) Most of the times I encounter this bug the shutdown button disappears
and the session indicator appears duplicated.

2) Most of the times the shut down button is not disappeared, the
session indicator one appears corrupted.

3) In this precise moment my right screen icons are regular; on my right
(principal) screen all the icons are on their place but the session
indicator. It is duplicated, visible and working on the right screen,
not visible yet working on the left one.

Concluding, I firmly believe the problem of the visual corruption relies in the
session indicator applet (which may explain why previous ubuntu versions are
not affected by this bug)
it may sound complicated, so I am adding a couple of screenshots...

If you have this bug (blue and red color in video are invert) and you have a

Just launch the nvidia X server settings, choose your screen (X screen 0),
Xserver video settings, Reset hardware defaults.

That's worked for me and others.

[Bug 596559] Re: Lost text file contents due to desktop bug - change autorecover defaults!

2010-07-11 Thread Cefn
I'm not sure I agree. For me and countless others you could decide to
have autosave ENABLED by default.

I probably wasn't clear in my original bug report, but my point was that
you have two modes.

Sensible mode - keep my data
Stupid mode - lose my data

I'm questioning the logic by which 'Stupid mode' has been chosen as the
default. Can anyone account for that?

[Bug 596559] Re: Lost text file contents due to desktop bug - change autorecover defaults!

2010-07-11 Thread Cefn
This relates to the following bug too, which doesn't seem to have been accepted
as something needing attention...
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gedit/+bug/151365
...and which just bit me - since activating 'autosave' I thought the editor
would save automatically, but a previously unsaved file is the exception.

This user report concurs...
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/14837

I can't really get away from the simple headline, - Text Editor Fails
to Save Edited Text.

If it was a human being with this responsibility, we'd expect their
resignation on the desk Monday morning, so why do we put up with it in
software.

Steps to replicate
- use gedit for a bit as a text editor
- do not save, or save and do not realise you have to click 'autosave' in the
preferences
- encounter a problem (battery flat, non-resume from sleep, crash)
- lose your hard-edited text

My experience is that making changes in Sound Juicer's output format doesn't
make any difference in the resulting mp3 quality. I used your setting above

same CD, both resulting files report the bitrate of 128.

[Bug 520563] Re: Power manager doesn't recognize battery usage

2010-07-11 Thread Tristram
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 39413 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/39413

I'm seeing this problem with Lucid 64-bit on a brand new Packard Bell
Dot-S2 netbook (Intel Atom N450 with 6-cell Li-Ion battery). It doesn't
happen on my other laptop, a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pa 3553 also running
Lucid 64-bit but on an AMD Turion X2 CPU. Battery is similar type and
capacity I believe.

Interestingly, if I plug in and unplug the netbook then the battery
status reports correctly in gnome-power-manager. Of course this is only
useful if I have the charger to hand and I'm near a power outlet which
somewhat defeats the point of having a netbook!

After I've plugged in and unplugged the computer so the battery status
works, I get a critical warning when the battery level reaches about 75%
and the computer hibernates. If I plug it in and unplug it a second time
before it switches off this doesn't happen.

gnome-power-manager version is 2.30.0-0ubuntu1

I've also tried using BatteryStatus
(http://live.gnome.org/BatteryStatus) but still have the same problem,
i.e. battery not recognised at startup but shows up when I plug
in/unplug the computer.

The suggestion in # 115271 may add some functions - but the suggestion
in Bug # 115829 (system update - Brasero uninstall and re-install using

[Bug 592908] Re: Acer 532h Battery Problem

2010-07-11 Thread James King
Not only is this problem causing sudden shutdowns or suspensions of the
netbook (sometimes with embarrassing results like in a classroom
situation where I have spent time talking about the benefits of open
source software), but it causes the power-management records to be
wildly inaccurate, even when using smooth lines. There seems to be
several issues with the Aspire One and 10.04 with regards to power
management. I hope these issues get moved higher up the triage list.

[Bug 596055] Re: Reykjavik's (Iceland) timezone is incorrect

2010-07-11 Thread talltom
The date is correct. After further investigation the Reykjavik time zone
is only incorrect when it is not set as my home location. When I set it
to my home location the time zone label changes to GMT (the correct
situation). Furthermore, at this point London (my true home location)
changes to BST +1 (British Summer Time +1.), this is very strange as BST
+1 doesn't exist. Here in the UK we have GMT/BST.

[Bug 549935] Re: gnome-screenshot ignores --area if called from shortcut

2010-07-11 Thread Stefan Thieme
I have the same issue on 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux
I can not run /usr/bin/gnome-screenshot --area from a shortcut binding.

I have disabled (backspace) the default keybindings without success, the custom
command will ignore the --area option and create a screenshot of both screens.
Please let me know if you need any debug information and which.

Kind regards,
Stefan

[Bug 519329] Re: cannot open pdf Error message Failed to read the document catalog

2010-07-11 Thread Loraine A. Baird
I have been having the same problem in Lucid for a week now, whether
using Evince or Adobe, but previously downloaded .pdfs I had on a backup
disk open fine. After downloading several .pdfs from Google Books and
Internet Archive with the same File is damaged error in both Evince
and Adobe it is obviously not an error in the .pdfs themselves. Would
greatly appreciate a solution. Thank you!

Actually this issue seems to be quite random. Sometimes the screen
blanks, sometimes not.
I don't have a mouse attached when I test this.

[Bug 604392] [NEW] Ubuntu style should use theme colors when possible.

2010-07-11 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Currently as of Lucid, the Ubuntu theme for Empathy uses the same
colors, regardless of the current theme. This looks jarring, especially
when the user is using a light-on-dark theme, or a theme with a color
other than white for input boxes.

If it's not possible to derive sensible colors for all the elements from
the GTK theme, it would help if at least the background behind the text
bubbles could be colored to match the current theme.

I'm not a python hacker, but I think the problem here is just the
missing 'python-gi' package. Currently it can't be installed because of

[Bug 201470] [NEW] Should be a way to mount silently (no desktop icon, no window opening)

2010-07-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Consider this operation (done on a stock Hardy Live CD):

mkdir -p ~/.tmp/mnt
sudo apt-get install fuseiso # need to use fuseiso since loop-mounting seems
broken on Live CD
fuseiso Desktop/test.iso ~/.tmp/mnt/

In Hardy (unlike earlier versions), this adds an icon to the desktop and
opens a Nautilus popup window, which I do *not* want.

I hear that it is supposed to be this way ONLY if you use a mount point
inside /media - but unfortunately that is not the case.

Please add a mount option to mount silently, like
mount -o donotshow

Another option would be that if the mount point starts with a dot, then
the volume is mounted without adding an icon to the desktop and without
opening a Nautilus popup window.

(Globally disabling desktop icons and opening windows is *not* an
option, i need a way to do this per mount point.)

Use case:
The klik project (klikclient.googlecode.com) packages individual applications
inside ISO files. Each time you launch an application, an ISO is silently
mounted, from which the application then runs. This worked fine until now, but
now in Hardy the Nautilus popup windows and desktop icons are very confusing.
There should be a way for klik to specify that no such icons and windows are
opened.

[Bug 267047] Re: cpufreq applet doesn't draw anything (white square) in gnome-panel

2010-07-11 Thread PAB
Still present also for me in Lucid.
You can see in the screenshot one broken instance (CPU1) showing some damaged
area of its own tooltip help and one working instance (CPU0) at the same time.
I would say in 30% of the cases the control applet is broken.
Would be nice, if someone can fix this, since this is quiet annoying...

2010-07-11 Thread Philip Muškovac
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in nautilus.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 324043] Re: Not all birthdays are shown

2010-07-11 Thread LorenM
I received the message that there is a fix, not showing all birthdays in
the calendar. I installed an Evolution update last week, but I have at
least two birthdays that are not showing in the calendar at this time.
One on April 2, (04/02/1951) and one on July 14 (07/14/1955). I notice
that if I change something about the 7-14 contact it immediately shows
up in the calendar, but if I close Evolution and reopen it the birthday
no longer shows in the calendar.

On 2010-05-04, I mentioned that a 4-25 birthday did not show in the
calendar, but before the update, it reappeared in the calendar. I
suspect there is an impact of the system date changing if a specific
contact date appears in the calendar. I left the 4-25 birthday with a
year of 2008 since I reported the bug. I believe the 4-25 birthday
contact reappeared in the calendar on the correct date about a month
after their birthday, sometime late in May, and I believe the 4-25
birthday continued to show in the calendar after it reappeared before
the update to Evolution. The 4-25 birthday is still showing in the
calendar after the update.

[Bug 604415] [NEW] nautilus tries to open windows executables with file roller instead of wine

2010-07-11 Thread Joseph Garvin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I just upgraded to Lucid. Now nautilus tries to open .exe files with
file roller instead of wine. Ironically, the icon for the file is a wine
glass, which indicates that some part of nautilus has correctly
identified the file type, just not all of it.
