[Bug 604007] Re: apt-get install failed on package python-gobject-dbg

2010-07-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Last update now.

As long as I need a stable Lucid system, I decided to clean-up
everything without spending more time in this investigation of the bug.
The problem actually arose when trying to debugging a proposed version
of a buggy package. After that trial, I caused the system to become
unstable (from the APT point of view).

Therefore I cleaned up everything just a few minutes ago, deleting
/etc/sources.list.d/ddebs and removing all *-dbgsym packages.

Now the system is correct and APT is working well.

Thank You for Your time.

Ciao
CM

[Bug 605295] [NEW] Preview pane on evolution doesn't work after resume from standby

2010-07-14 Thread Iñigo Martinez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When resuming my laptop from standby, evolution preview pane freezes and don't
work.
I can open emails in a new window, but preview pane remains with old mail data.

In order to get preview pane working again, I have to run an evolution
--force-shutdown from command line and open Evo again.

This is a problem I've experienced in last ubuntu releases, not only
Lucid Lynx, but Intrepid, Hardy, Jaunty and Karmic.

[Bug 604846] Re: Error receiving email File is encrypted or is not a database

2010-07-14 Thread Akil Mahimwala
I have exactly the same problem reported above. I was switching between
Calendar and Mails when Evolution stopped responding. I had to do a
force shutdown. After that I can't receive any emails on one of my
accounts. The other account works fine. I have access to all the emails
and was able to do a backup as well. The error that I see is Error
while Fetching Mail and when I click on the icon in the task bar it
gives me a pop-up that says file is encrypted or is not a database.

Please help.

Akil

[Bug 605321] [NEW] Should get in focus when hit Show Rythmbox

2010-07-14 Thread tobyS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When Rythmbox is minimized to the task tray, one can click the icon and
select Show Rythmbox. Doing so, opens the main window and brings its
entry to the task bar, flashing. How every, the window does not come to
the foreground (i.e. gets the focus). To achieve that, an extra click on
the task bar entry is needed. I would expect that Rythmbox gets focused,
when I explicitely state to show it.

[Bug 605349] [NEW] Locked screensaver and gdm switch user are conceptually the same

2010-07-14 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

From an end-user perspective, locking your screen or switching user are
exactly the same : you lock your session while allowing other users to
log in their own session. Both locking and switching have the same
result with the same feature but with a different screen. The locked
screen also needs one more action to allow another user to log in.

To solve this bug, locking and switching should be merged into one
action. The result should be to display the GDM login screen just like
using switching.

- The screensaver should still be active above the GDM switch screen.
- The currently logged user should already be selected in the GDM screen to
allow a quick type your password to relog immediatly
- A message feature should be available (or we have to accept that this is a
feature removal)

User benefits :
+ Better seamless experience (not having to ask yourself which one you want to
use)
+ One less entry in the menu. This is always a huge win !
+ Better switching discoverability. A lot of user still don't know that this is
possible, even when confronted with the screensaver login screen because they
don't read the buttons. The GDM screen speaks for itself.
+ Discoverability of the guest session.
+ The GDM artwork is nice. Why should we have this ugly box on a black
background ?

Technical benefits :
+ One module less - less code
+ Remove some multiple bug opportunities by removing the screensaver lockscreen
+ avoid code and debugging duplication
+ avoid artwork duplication

Open questions :
+ Which screensaver should be used when multiple users are logged in ? (the
last logged user ?)
+ Forbid switching when you are logged in ? (does it make sense ? is it
already possible ?)

[Bug 140918] Re: Adding stuff to autostart is too difficult

2010-07-14 Thread Vish
Matthew Paul Thomas wrote on dup Bug #462404:

Nautilus has an Open With dialog that lists all the applications it
knows about.

If that dialog is not a standard GTK widget, the first step is to make
it a standard GTK widget. (That way Thunderbird could use it for letting
you choose which application to open an attachment with, for example, in
the same way that it uses the native GTK print dialog.)

Then, gnome-session-properties can use the same dialog for letting you
choose a startup application.

[Bug 605367] [NEW] Menu Items Left Behind After Uninstall

2010-07-14 Thread Deluge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

When a new application is installed that creates a menu item, a .desktop
file is placed in /usr/share/applications. However, if a normal user
uses alacarte to edit that menu item, a new .desktop file is created in
/home/username/.local/share/applications that overrides the original.
If the application is then un-installed, it removes its own file in
/usr/share/applications, but the one in the user's home directory is
left behind. This leaves an invalid menu item in the main menu. To get
rid of the invalid item, the .desktop file in the user's home directory
must be deleted.

If I may, I'd like to propose a solution:
I see that alacarte detects newly created .desktop files and adds their
information to the main menu. One option could be to have alacarte scan for
the targeted executables in the .desktop files located in the user's home
directory. If the executables do not exist, have alacarte delete the .desktop
files.

[Bug 605368] [NEW] Workspace Switcher preferences menu item doesn't show

2010-07-14 Thread ComputerJy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This is a little bit tricky so I'm going to list steps of reproduction.
1- Install the package Ubuntu Tweak. I'm using version 0.5.4.1
2- Start Ubuntu tweak and go to GNOME Settings tab.
3- Check the Complete lockdown of all panels --Which I figured only flips a
switch in the gconf
4- Log out and Log back in.
5- Right click on the Workspace Switcher. The preferences is not showing.
Try steps 2 3 but uncheck this time. Still invisible

I don't know if I'm reporting the correct package. But I thought it's a
relevant issue

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2010-07-14 Thread Bartolomeo Nicolotti
Another copy-paste problem...

I'm using evolution as mail client at work. The problem is that the
mails I send are not visible on some outlook or send it in loop, but...

The mail server we use is Zimbra, that has a web-mail, so I use it to
send mails to someone i know as a wonderful outlook, but...

If I've written something in evolution and then I try to copy-past the
body from evolution to the zimbra compose form in firefox, I cannot, but

if I open gedit, then I paste to gedit then select, then copy then paste
to zimbra composer it works!

wonderful how simple is to send a mail from ubuntu to windows (this is
probably due to a but in outlook, of course...)!

Ubuntu 8.04 (I haven't had time/courage to upgrade to 10.4 LTS)
Evolution 2.22.3.1
Zimbra ?

many thanks!

bye

[Bug 604635] Re: [Maverick] Have default settings be energy star 5.0 compliant

2010-07-14 Thread Jerone Young
@Martin Pitt
Thanks Martin! I would agree. That does lesson the work needed.
As I mentioned Activating sleep after 30 minutes is potentially has potential
impact on machines that do not suspend well, as well as potential user
experience issues.

With what Mario mentioned I would say that if a Desktop
is having issues with suspend, the preferred method would be to have the
defaults be energy star compliant (suspend after 30min inactivity), and
we would then do something to basically change the suspend setting so
for that machine we wouldn't suspend. Essentially breaking the energy
star compliance.

Though we can wait to see what the response upstream is
toward energy start compliance. Would like to follow more given upstream
even perhaps UX team community input.

[Bug 604724] Re: pdftops loses grid lines

2010-07-14 Thread Till Kamppeter
For me there are missing grid lines with both /usr/bin/pdftops and
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops and /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops is a
wrapper around /usr/bin/pdftops so in any case Poppler's
/usr/bin/pdftops is used.

[Bug 309366] Re: clock does not update

2010-07-14 Thread aminrella
It affects me too. Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, my clock (at the
top-right edge of my screen) is generally blocked. (it happens to work, but
generally not).
Therefore, if right-click on the clock, then go to Preferences-Clock Settings,
the time at the right of current time is ok : it changes every second.
Please tell me if you need more data.

[Bug 604635] Re: [Maverick] Have default settings be energy star 5.0 compliant

2010-07-14 Thread Jerone Young
To add some more comments.

Thinking about the 30 minute suspsend when idle more. Off the top of my
head I can think of some use cases that can be impacted by this:

* A long download via firefox or chromium
* watching a movie or listening to music

Though a solution seems to this already exist. I know that totem has the
ability to tell gnome-power-manager that the it is busy so don't do
anything automatically. This would also be something that firefox or
chromium could have as well when they are downloading content.

I was also told that Transimmision Bittorrent Client has the same logic
to prevent gnome-power-manager from automatically like suspend when it
is running.

Not sure if they are reporting the system not being idle or something
else. But I believe it's all done over dbus.

[Bug 600631] Re: Password does not unlock screen

2010-07-14 Thread Jon Oberheide
What's ls -l /etc/shadow look like? /etc/shadow should be 640, owner
root, and group shadow.

I only ask because I ran into the same issue after exploiting myself
with the recent pam_motd vulnerability. My PoC
(http://twitter.com/jonoberheide/status/18009527979) changed the
ownership of /etc/shadow and upon changing it back (I think I did chown
root:root instead of root:shadow), I had the same issue of not being
able to log in via the screensaver and the same check pass; user
unknown error message (unix_chkpwd can't read the file if its not
shadow group readable).

I would blame it on the recent vulnerability...except that your initial
bug report pre-dated the vulnerability announcement. :-)

Re: [Bug 602999] Re: LCD backlight does not turn off when inactive

2010-07-14 Thread sportrider
I would say that this is the same bug as 371195. I can confirm that
the back-light on my laptop never goes out. Though the screen saver
(whatever I choose) engages when it's supposed to, the back-light
never turns off, even after 40 minutes.

[Bug 600631] Re: Password does not unlock screen

2010-07-14 Thread Taleman
The owner was root:root, must have changed it by mistake when I put back
password from previous install of Ubuntu. Doing chown root:shadow
/etc/shadow and chmod u=r,g=r /etc/shadow fixed the problem.

Thanks for the tip. Have to be more careful next time I modify shadow
and password files.

So this is not a bug about screensaver not accepting valid password, but
a bug raport of the screensaver not showing warning message about wrong
permissions in the /etc/shadow file.

by appearing of fully functional 'Places - Search for files' applet?

[Bug 605290] [NEW] Unplug, replug AC on laptop, screen pulses, battery indicator not updated, power statistics and preferences screens unavailable

2010-07-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

Steps to reproduce:
Laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200 with an after-market AC adapter)
1) unplug AC power
2) replug AC power

Resulting symptoms: Frequently (probably 70% of the time)
  1) Pulsing, Flashing, beating, flickering display (looks like the brightness
level is popping up and down rapidly)
  2) The battery indicator still shows battery as discharging.
  3) The battery indicator's Power Statistics (usually accessed by clicking
battery status on popdown menu) and Preferences screen are unavailable. If you
click on the battery status area you can see a faintly visible 3D outline of a
transparent dialog box the size of the normal popdown menu item, but no item is
visible).
  4) results of
   upower --dump
   cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
  and
   cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state
sometimes match what the battery indicator displays and sometimes not. This is
what leads me to think it is some kind of acpi event or other power event not
being properly processed on a deeper level than just the gnome-power-manager or
the battery indicator malfunctioning. I'll try and provide more details of this
at a later time.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: acpi-support 0.136
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.36-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2

[Bug 605290] Re: Unplug, replug AC on laptop, screen pulses, battery indicator not updated, power statistics and preferences screens unavailable

2010-07-14 Thread Steve Langasek
acpi-support is unrelated to processing such events. If the power
management GUI becomes unavailable, but upower --dump still returns,
sounds like this is likely to be a gnome-power-manager bug; reassigning
there.

[Bug 397670] Re: apt-get upgrade crashes repeatedly

2010-07-14 Thread Joel Kreager
This was a problem only with my first install of 9.04 on my netbook.
Subsequently, I managed to get that version patched up to a workable
form, (I forget exactly how). 9.10 and 10.04 installed and ran without
any substantial problems. I only experienced this with netbook remix,
not with the generic i386 install on my desktop. I would close the bug
-- I don't see how to do this myself.
