[Bug 604007] Re: apt-get install failed on package python-gobject-dbg
Last update now. As long as I need a stable Lucid system, I decided to clean-up everything without spending more time in this investigation of the bug. The problem actually arose when trying to debugging a proposed version of a buggy package. After that trial, I caused the system to become unstable (from the APT point of view). Therefore I cleaned up everything just a few minutes ago, deleting /etc/sources.list.d/ddebs and removing all *-dbgsym packages. Now the system is correct and APT is working well. Thank You for Your time. [Bug 605349] [NEW] Locked screensaver and gdm switch user are conceptually the same
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver From an end-user perspective, locking your screen or switching user are exactly the same : you lock your session while allowing other users to log in their own session. Both locking and switching have the same result with the same feature but with a different screen. The locked screen also needs one more action to allow another user to log in. To solve this bug, locking and switching should be merged into one action. The result should be to display the GDM login screen just like using switching. - The screensaver should still be active above the GDM switch screen. - The currently logged user should already be selected in the GDM screen to allow a quick type your password to relog immediatly - A message feature should be available (or we have to accept that this is a feature removal) User benefits : + Better seamless experience (not having to ask yourself which one you want to use) + One less entry in the menu. This is always a huge win ! + Better switching discoverability. A lot of user still don't know that this is possible, even when confronted with the screensaver login screen because they don't read the buttons. The GDM screen speaks for itself. + Discoverability of the guest session. + The GDM artwork is nice. Why should we have this ugly box on a black background ? Technical benefits : + One module less - less code + Remove some multiple bug opportunities by removing the screensaver lockscreen + avoid code and debugging duplication + avoid artwork duplication Open questions : + Which screensaver should be used when multiple users are logged in ? [Bug 605367] [NEW] Menu Items Left Behind After Uninstall
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: alacarte When a new application is installed that creates a menu item, a .desktop file is placed in /usr/share/applications. However, if a normal user uses alacarte to edit that menu item, a new .desktop file is created in /home/username/.local/share/applications that overrides the original. If the application is then un-installed, it removes its own file in /usr/share/applications, but the one in the user's home directory is left behind. This leaves an invalid menu item in the main menu. To get rid of the invalid item, the .desktop file in the user's home directory must be deleted. If I may, I'd like to propose a solution: I see that alacarte detects newly created .desktop files and adds their information to the main menu. One option could be to have alacarte scan for the targeted executables in the .desktop files located in the user's home directory. If the executables do not exist, have alacarte delete the .desktop files. Another copy-paste problem... I'm using evolution as mail client at work. The problem is that the mails I send are not visible on some outlook or send it in loop, but... [Bug 604635] Re: [Maverick] Have default settings be energy star 5.0 compliant
@Martin Pitt Thanks Martin! I would agree. That does lesson the work needed. As I mentioned Activating sleep after 30 minutes is potentially has potential impact on machines that do not suspend well, as well as potential user experience issues. With what Mario mentioned I would say that if a Desktop is having issues with suspend, the preferred method would be to have the defaults be energy star compliant (suspend after 30min inactivity), and we would then do something to basically change the suspend setting so for that machine we wouldn't suspend. Essentially breaking the energy star compliance. Though we can wait to see what the response upstream is toward energy start compliance. To add some more comments. Thinking about the 30 minute suspsend when idle more. Off the top of my head I can think of some use cases that can be impacted by this: * A long download via firefox or chromium * watching a movie or listening to music Though a solution seems to this already exist. I know that totem has the ability to tell gnome-power-manager that the it is busy so don't do anything automatically. This would also be something that firefox or chromium could have as well when they are downloading content. I was also told that Transimmision Bittorrent Client has the same logic to prevent gnome-power-manager from automatically like suspend when it is running. Not sure if they are reporting the system not being idle or something else. [Bug 600631] Re: Password does not unlock screen
What's ls -l /etc/shadow look like? /etc/shadow should be 640, owner root, and group shadow. I only ask because I ran into the same issue after exploiting myself with the recent pam_motd vulnerability. My PoC (http://twitter.com/jonoberheide/status/18009527979) changed the ownership of /etc/shadow and upon changing it back (I think I did chown root:root instead of root:shadow), I had the same issue of not being able to log in via the screensaver and the same check pass; user unknown error message (unix_chkpwd can't read the file if its not shadow group readable). I would blame it on the recent vulnerability...except that your initial bug report pre-dated the vulnerability announcement. :-) -- Password does not unlock screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600631 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 605290] [NEW] Unplug, replug AC on laptop, screen pulses, battery indicator not updated, power statistics and preferences screens unavailable
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: acpi-support Steps to reproduce: Laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200 with an after-market AC adapter) 1) unplug AC power 2) replug AC power Resulting symptoms: Frequently (probably 70% of the time) 1) Pulsing, Flashing, beating, flickering display (looks like the brightness level is popping up and down rapidly) 2) The battery indicator still shows battery as discharging. 3) The battery indicator's Power Statistics (usually accessed by clicking battery status on popdown menu) and Preferences screen are unavailable. If you click on the battery status area you can see a faintly visible 3D outline of a transparent dialog box the size of the normal popdown menu item, but no item is visible). 4) results of upower --dump cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state and cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state sometimes match what the battery indicator displays and sometimes not. This is what leads me to think it is some kind of acpi event or other power event not being properly processed on a deeper level than just the gnome-power-manager or the battery indicator malfunctioning. If the power management GUI becomes unavailable, but upower --dump still returns, sounds like this is likely to be a gnome-power-manager bug; reassigning there. ** Package changed: acpi-support (Ubuntu) = gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) -- Unplug, replug AC on laptop, screen pulses, battery indicator not updated, power statistics and preferences screens unavailable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605290 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 397670] Re: apt-get upgrade crashes repeatedly
This was a problem only with my first install of 9.04 on my netbook. Subsequently, I managed to get that version patched up to a workable form, (I forget exactly how). 9.10 and 10.04 installed and ran without any substantial problems. I only experienced this with netbook remix, not with the generic i386 install on my desktop. I would close the bug -- I don't see how to do this myself. -- apt-get upgrade crashes repeatedly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/397670 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-applets in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
