Ok, I'd like to chime in here a moment, this whole not being able to

I take it then that you've been using a custom panel configuration?
Because in the default Ubuntu config, the top left corner has the
Applications menu in it, and the top right corner has the Session menu
in it.

In other words, the throw it in the corner and click to close the
window capability is not a feature of Ubuntu pre 9.10.

Our position on this is that the corner is reserved for access to
applications, or shutting down the machine. If you want to close the
window you need to click on the button for closing the window.

[Bug 603097] Re: gdm other language selection shows markup entries

2010-07-22 Thread David Ayers
Sure, thank you for your feedback!

I'll open new reports for them.

But I think was unclear about the second package... it's not the top
panel of the me menu that displays the name incorrectly, but the
window it opens. This seems to the same window when appears when I
select System-Prefrences-About me. Using pstree I figure this is
actually the gnome-about-me executable which seems to be part of the
gnome-control-center package, but also the capplets-data package seems
to have ui definitions for it... I'll investigate a bit more when i get
around to and open a new report.

Cheers,
David

[Bug 608597] [NEW] Nautilus memory not released when closed

2010-07-22 Thread David Clayton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I open Nautilus and then close the (only) window, Nautilus remains
in the process table consuming memory.

The process remains spawned off the gnome-session process for the user
that initiated it, and seems to sit there forever instead of closing and
releasing the memory for other uses.

The ~190MiB that Nautilus consumes for each user that may have spawned
it is not trivial for a program that is not running.

[Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-22 Thread inane
Hi Mark,

I'd just like the option to set it back, that is my only problem. I
know I'm not the only one who likes the panel only on the bottom.

To give you a little information on my situation, I have a 30 monitor
that's 2560 x 1600, so using two panels doesn't make sense for me, the
default top panel has about 2,000 pixels of blank canvas I like to apply
the Window List to that space. With two panels, I'm using 100,000
pixels for panels instead of just 50,000. I understand your reasoning
though and I'm fine with simply adding a shortcut to the panel for
closing the active window. I'm just glad that GNU/Linux is so versatile
that I have these options available. Options are what makes the
operating system so different from every other and the real value in it.

I can work around it just fine (hell I might even just start working on
a panel app for this) but to leave out the option to change the behavior
is the asinine part I was speaking about. Leaving out options and
customization is a rather common reason many people have come to loathe
Microsoft and Apple, and the greatest distinction that Free Software
has.

Thanks kind of you and appreciated. On the subject of options, though, I
would urge you to think through the full cost of adding an option. We
discussed it on the Ayatana list for another case where someone wanted
an option, check out

Re: [Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-22 Thread The Fiddler
I am afraid you are slightly mistaken. In the default configuration, you
used to be able to throw the mouse to the right edge of the screen and only
aim vertically for the close button. While this is more difficult than
throwing the mouse to the corner, it is significantly easier than aiming a
16x16 area as we currently must.

Please note that this issue is less apparent the smaller the screen area is.
It is (almost) a non-issue on a 1280x800 laptop monitor but it is most
definitely an issue on a 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 monitor - and doubly so when
using multiple monitors.

For what it's worth, the New Wave theme does not suffer from this issue,
so a simple, temporary workaround exists.

gone without even the option to set it back.

 Binary package hint: light-themes

The close button, now that it is in the corner, is too clickable because it
is possible to click anywhere to the left of it and still activate it. That
makes the close button quite a bit larger than the other two buttons, when
it should be the same size. The space to the left of the button, between the
button and the edge of the window, should not be clickable.

[Bug 608597] Re: Nautilus memory not released when closed

2010-07-22 Thread David Clayton
So when I start a root Nautilus screen (either via the nautilus-gksu
package or manually) and then close it, I have to live with ~190MiB of
memory permanently used until my system is rebooted or I manually kill
that process?

If I manually end the Nautilus process via the System Manager (user
and/or root processes) my system still mounts devices and seem to
operate as normal (the script that changes my desktop background on a
regular basis runs as normal). If Nautilus is not in memory in my
system, when devices are mounted the Nautilus window appears (as normal)
to show the files, and again it remains in memory if the sole Nautilus
window is closed.

If my system seems to operate normally without Nautilus in memory, then
why is it necessary for it to always be there?

Nautilus is not a trivial user of memory resources, it does not make a
lot of sense if it firstly remains using that resource when run as root,
and secondly if it does not actually have to remain in memory for normal
Gnome functionality for the logged in user.

[Bug 118433] Re: mahjongg scoreboard: sometimes cannot enter name

2010-07-22 Thread DJ Dallas
This is still easily reproducible in Lucid Lynx. If your high-score
slots are clear, you should be able to reproduce it by the end of the
second game, but it is sometimes pretty random. Though in my experience
it has never produced the error on the first game. After the first game,
change the default user name entry to something else. Most often (but
not always) after the second game, it will enter the user's name into
the high scores without any option to edit it. After the second game,
the occurrence of the error is seemingly random, but I agree that it
occurs about roughly 1/4 of the time. I have also used ctrl-h hints the
whole way through the game to speed this up (can't play as fast as my
wife), and it seems to make no difference.

There is normally no terminal output at all. I did however randomly get
the following a few times during a sequential set of games:

** (mahjongg:3033): WARNING **: Clock not started, cannot add seconds!

This didn't seem to affect the game, scores, or the bug in any way
though. If anything it seemed to produce the score entry bug less often
while it was randomly producing the terminal error.

I could try to run it with a debug flag, but have no idea if there is
one. Anybody know of one? There is no mention of it in the help or man
entries.

[Bug 608707] [NEW] Filter for only Active Tasks doesn't work

2010-07-22 Thread JohnL
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Active Tasks filter selects ALL tasks which have not finished instead of just
Active tasks (Which are tasks that HAVE STARTED but ARE NOT COMPLETE) For
example, the 10 yearly maintenance for a fuel tank may start in April 2016 and
is due for completion in August 2016. it is NOT active now just because it is
not complete. The task doesn't even start for another 5 years!
Evolution is not the only PIM to get this wrong, of course. MS Outlook and
Thunderbird Lightning also make the same mistake. In fact it appears to be only
Novell Groupwise which understands this and displays just (really) active tasks
by default. At least it did back in 1990. Sadly its all been downhill since
Windows wrested control of networking from Novell.

2010-07-22 Thread papukaija
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We need some more information from you before we can
start working on this bug.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary
information:

apport-collect 608706

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from
the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'.
Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad
you will need to give it at least the ability to Change Non-Private data as
it will be adding information to your bug report.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-07-22 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Has anybody tried the RGBA partial GTK+ window transparency?

After 2 days of testing I think it works fine, but, on the other hand,
makes the problem discussed here even worse. Recently I'm facing this
problem very rarely, however, with RGBA transparency enabled, at nearly
every boot I saw some visual corruption (usually the brightness applet).
After disabling RGBA everything is fine again!

I felt it's important to point this out, as Ubuntu 10.10 (if I'm not
mistaken...) should come with RGBA support prepacked!

[Bug 608731] Re: Brasero crashes while converting a video file

2010-07-22 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 449188] Re: Closing laptop lid doesn't cause the screen to go blank

2010-07-22 Thread Adam
I'm also having this problem on a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Ubuntu 10.04 x64.
Kernel version is 2.6.32-24.

This a _severe_ problem for me. When I encode videos, I have always
closed the screen and left the laptop. Occasionally, upon opening the
lid, the entire screen has turned a weird whitish color, which slowly
fades to black. Nothing I do (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-F4) will fix the screen but
a hard reboot. While I'm not sure exactly what causes the problem, I
suspect it would not occur if the screen (and backlight) turned off when
I close the lid.

Two notes:
1. sudo radeontool light off turns the screen off until I close and reopen
the lid.
2. I think the screen blanked but the backlight remained on until recently. I
think the screen began to stay on as well after I updated to the proposed
kernel (2.6.32-24).

[Bug 560665] Re: gnome-appearance-manager doesn't set font setting for whole system

2010-07-22 Thread stenliq
Good point. But Gnome and KDE developers working together... that sounds
like scifi to me :))

There are already two (maybe more) projects trying to make Gnome and KDE
look uniform. For KDE it's gtk-qt-engine and for Gnome we have
QGtkStyle. I'm not sure about QGtkStyle but the first one has the option
to use KDE font settings in GTK/Gnome apps. And it works. Looks really
simple for me to include it in default installation (and have it set to
look nicely).

[Bug 608774] [NEW] Nautilus should honor the HAL setting 'storage.automount_enabled_hint'

2010-07-22 Thread Cédric Dufour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello,

Some use cases (e.g. using a USB key as an authentication token along
with 'pamusb') require automount to be disabled for specific drive(s)
(rather than globally for all drives, using for example 'gconf-editor -
apps - nautilus - preferences - media_automount = false')

This could be achieved using HAL policies. Example given (in
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/my-policy.fdi):
deviceinfo version=0.2
  device
match key=storage.serial string=some-serial-discovered-with-lshal
  merge key=storage.automount_enabled_hint type=boolfalse/merge
  merge key=volume.policy.should_mount type=boolfalse/merge
  merge key=volume.ignore type=booltrue/merge
/match
  /device
/deviceinfo

Unfortunately, in Lucid Lynx 10.04, this does not seem to work
(anylonger?).

Nautilus should honor (at least one of) the possible HAL settings listed
above.

Or is there a new recommended way to achieve this behavior?

Cheers

[Bug 608787] [NEW] GtkFileChooserButton uses previously selected path when choosing an unmounted device

2010-07-22 Thread Muflone
Public bug reported:

Overview:
While the FileChooserButton is not expanded (the FileChooserDialog is not
shown, just the list in the ComboBox) and the user selects a unmounted device,
the previously selected paths is automatically assumed.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open gnome-search-tool (or similar tool which uses GtkFileChooserButton)
2) Select a valid path like the home folder
3) Select an unmounted device
4) Press the search button

Actual result:
The search is made in the previously selected path (eg. Home folder).
No warnings or errors are reported about the unmounted device.
Using the widget from PyGTK I've checked that no signals are fired if the user
choose an unmounted device and get_uri reports the previous path.

Expected result:
The chooser should warn or deny to choose an unmounted device.
Some signals should inform the developer that an invalid path was selected OR
BOTH get_uri and get_filename should return the correct unmounted path AND all
signals should be fired to let the developer to decide if such path is
valid/mounted.

Build Date Platform:
Tested with:
GTK 2.14.4 from OpenSuse 11.1
GTK 2.16.1 from Ubuntu 9.04
GTK 2.18.3 from Ubuntu 9.10
GTK 2.20.1 from Debian sid
GTK 2.21.2 from Ubuntu 10.10 alpha 2

Additional information:
This bug is not strictly related to gnome-search-tool, it's reproducible with
every app that uses GtkFileChooserButton.

[Bug 608794] [NEW] Window Manager stops responding; need to restart X session

2010-07-22 Thread Daniel Carrasco Guariento
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

With no apparent reason, the X session hangs and all commands take a
long time to be recognized by the system. It does not become completely
unresponsive, but if gdm is not restarted, it locks the entire system
after a few minutes.

This bug has happened after a random time logged in, but it seems to be
more easily triggered when one of these programs are running:

- chromium-browser
- evince
- vlc

I am running Lucid x64 on a Toshiba Satellite A210-19B PSAFGE

[Bug 607853] Re: applet freezes and crashes

2010-07-22 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
