[Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner
Hi Mark, I'd just like the option to set it back, that is my only problem. I know I'm not the only one who likes the panel only on the bottom. To give you a little information on my situation, I have a 30 monitor that's 2560 x 1600, so using two panels doesn't make sense for me, the default top panel has about 2,000 pixels of blank canvas I like to apply the Window List to that space. With two panels, I'm using 100,000 pixels for panels instead of just 50,000. I understand your reasoning though and I'm fine with simply adding a shortcut to the panel for closing the active window. I'm just glad that GNU/Linux is so versatile that I have these options available. Options are what makes the operating system so different from every other and the real value in it. I can work around it just fine (hell I might even just start working on a panel app for this) but to leave out the option to change the behavior is the asinine part I was speaking about. Leaving out options and customization is a rather common reason many people have come to loathe Microsoft and Apple, and the greatest distinction that Free Software has. -- Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/558327 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner
I am afraid you are slightly mistaken. In the default configuration, you used to be able to throw the mouse to the right edge of the screen and only aim vertically for the close button. While this is more difficult than throwing the mouse to the corner, it is significantly easier than aiming a 16x16 area as we currently must. Please note that this issue is less apparent the smaller the screen area is. It is (almost) a non-issue on a 1280x800 laptop monitor but it is most definitely an issue on a 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 monitor - and doubly so when using multiple monitors. For what it's worth, the New Wave theme does not suffer from this issue, so a simple, temporary workaround exists. 2010/7/22 Mark Shuttleworth 558...@bugs.launchpad.net On 21/07/10 23:29, inane wrote: Ok, I'd like to chime in here a moment, this whole not being able to throw my mouse into the corner is amazing asinine, this is a behavior that I have come to know and love for YEARS now with GNOME, and it's gone without even the option to set it back. [Bug 608597] Re: Nautilus memory not released when closed
So when I start a root Nautilus screen (either via the nautilus-gksu package or manually) and then close it, I have to live with ~190MiB of memory permanently used until my system is rebooted or I manually kill that process? If I manually end the Nautilus process via the System Manager (user and/or root processes) my system still mounts devices and seem to operate as normal (the script that changes my desktop background on a regular basis runs as normal). If Nautilus is not in memory in my system, when devices are mounted the Nautilus window appears (as normal) to show the files, and again it remains in memory if the sole Nautilus window is closed. If my system seems to operate normally without Nautilus in memory, then why is it necessary for it to always be there? Nautilus is not a trivial user of memory resources, it does not make a lot of sense if it firstly remains using that resource when run as root, and secondly if it does not actually have to remain in memory for normal Gnome functionality for the logged in user. -- Nautilus memory not released when closed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608597 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 118433] Re: mahjongg scoreboard: sometimes cannot enter name
This is still easily reproducible in Lucid Lynx. If your high-score slots are clear, you should be able to reproduce it by the end of the second game, but it is sometimes pretty random. Though in my experience it has never produced the error on the first game. After the first game, change the default user name entry to something else. Most often (but not always) after the second game, it will enter the user's name into the high scores without any option to edit it. After the second game, the occurrence of the error is seemingly random, but I agree that it occurs about roughly 1/4 of the time. I have also used ctrl-h hints the whole way through the game to speed this up (can't play as fast as my wife), and it seems to make no difference. There is normally no terminal output at all. I did however randomly get the following a few times during a sequential set of games: ** (mahjongg:3033): WARNING **: Clock not started, cannot add seconds! This didn't seem to affect the game, scores, or the bug in any way though. If anything it seemed to produce the score entry bug less often while it was randomly producing the terminal error. I could try to run it with a debug flag, but have no idea if there is one. Anybody know of one? There is no mention of it in the help or man entries. This bug has been filed upstream since 2007-07-27: Bug 460966 - GamesScoresDialog shouldn't use an editable entry for retrieving the name (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460966) and recently refiled on 2010-06-07: Bug 620916 - sometimes cannot enter name into highscore - already computername filled in! [Bug 608731] Re: Brasero crashes while converting a video file
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: brasero (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: brasero (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- Brasero crashes while converting a video file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 449188] Re: Closing laptop lid doesn't cause the screen to go blank
I'm also having this problem on a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Ubuntu 10.04 x64. Kernel version is 2.6.32-24. This a _severe_ problem for me. When I encode videos, I have always closed the screen and left the laptop. Occasionally, upon opening the lid, the entire screen has turned a weird whitish color, which slowly fades to black. Nothing I do (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-F4) will fix the screen but a hard reboot. While I'm not sure exactly what causes the problem, I suspect it would not occur if the screen (and backlight) turned off when I close the lid. Two notes: 1. sudo radeontool light off turns the screen off until I close and reopen the lid. 2. I think the screen blanked but the backlight remained on until recently. I think the screen began to stay on as well after I updated to the proposed kernel (2.6.32-24). -- Closing laptop lid doesn't cause the screen to go blank https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/449188 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 560665] Re: gnome-appearance-manager doesn't set font setting for whole system
Good point. But Gnome and KDE developers working together... that sounds like scifi to me :)) There are already two (maybe more) projects trying to make Gnome and KDE look uniform. For KDE it's gtk-qt-engine and for Gnome we have QGtkStyle. I'm not sure about QGtkStyle but the first one has the option to use KDE font settings in GTK/Gnome apps. And it works. [Bug 608774] [NEW] Nautilus should honor the HAL setting 'storage.automount_enabled_hint'
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Hello, Some use cases (e.g. using a USB key as an authentication token along with 'pamusb') require automount to be disabled for specific drive(s) (rather than globally for all drives, using for example 'gconf-editor - apps - nautilus - preferences - media_automount = false') This could be achieved using HAL policies. Example given (in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/my-policy.fdi): deviceinfo version=0.2 device match key=storage.serial string=some-serial-discovered-with-lshal merge key=storage.automount_enabled_hint type=boolfalse/merge merge key=volume.policy.should_mount type=boolfalse/merge merge key=volume.ignore type=booltrue/merge /match /device /deviceinfo Unfortunately, in Lucid Lynx 10.04, this does not seem to work (anylonger?). [Bug 608787] [NEW] GtkFileChooserButton uses previously selected path when choosing an unmounted device
Public bug reported: Overview: While the FileChooserButton is not expanded (the FileChooserDialog is not shown, just the list in the ComboBox) and the user selects a unmounted device, the previously selected paths is automatically assumed. Steps to reproduce: 1) Open gnome-search-tool (or similar tool which uses GtkFileChooserButton) 2) Select a valid path like the home folder 3) Select an unmounted device 4) Press the search button Actual result: The search is made in the previously selected path (eg. Home folder). No warnings or errors are reported about the unmounted device. Using the widget from PyGTK I've checked that no signals are fired if the user choose an unmounted device and get_uri reports the previous path. Expected result: The chooser should warn or deny to choose an unmounted device. Some signals should inform the developer that an invalid path was selected OR BOTH get_uri and get_filename should return the correct unmounted path AND all signals should be fired to let the developer to decide if such path is valid/mounted. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected.
