[Bug 610358] [NEW] Full disk prevents from starting a graphical session (and Ubuntu does not warn)

2010-07-27 Thread YannUbuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

How to reproduce :
- start long operations filling disk space, for example big downloads or DVD
rip, etc..
- Ubuntu (gnome-disk-utility/gdu-notification-daemon) pop ups messages warning
that the disk has few space left, and proposes to empty trash. Remark : if the
user has left his computer he will not see all these messages.
- when disk is full (less than ~10Mo, I did not check exactly), log out your
session, or restart your computer

Result : it is IMPOSSIBLE to start a graphical session (Gnome, KDE, Lubuntu,
Openbox, Gnome backup session...), and there is no explanation about it in GDM.
The only one working is the xterm session, which is not understandable by
non-technical users.

What I propose :
- In a short term : warn the user (via gdu-notification-daemon pop-up windows
for example) that a full disk prevents from starting a graphical session (or
more generally Ubuntu may not work properly if the disk is full or nearly
full)
- In a medium term : find a way (quotas?) to ensure that the users can always
start a graphical session

2010-07-27 Thread Vish
Several issues as specked, in

However one issue that still remains is what Mat mentions in comment #7 ,

Once submitted upstream , do report back here with the upstream bug number.

[Bug 540280] Re: openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp

2010-07-27 Thread Laurens
This Bug can be reproduced as Reiner Jung in comment #11 describes.
Before marking this bug as fixed I uninstalled nautilus-bzr and didn't
notice that it was just because of that.

Steps to reproduce:
1. sudo apt-get install nautilus-bzr
2. killall nautilus
3. Open any sftp folder. ssh wrongly asks tree times for the password.

To let the bug disappear:
4. sudo apt-get remove nautilus-bzr
5. killall nautilus
6. Open any sftp folder. Now ssh won't ask for a password.
And everything works as before

[Bug 382117] Re: Renaming a file through Samba overwrites existing one

2010-07-27 Thread Dan Andreșan
Sebastien,

The bug still exists in Lucid (fully up to date).
I hit it by mistake, renaming some TV episodes on a NAS connected through
Nautilus Samba (smb://server/share).
But, as you correctly pointed out, it is not related to samba, but to gvfs.

Allow me to be brief:
D1. create two files on desktop, one first.txt, second second.txt and write
first in the first one and second in the second one
D2. try to rename first.txt to second.txt. Nautilus complains: 'The item could
not be renamed. The name second.txt is already used in this folder. Please
use a different name'. GOOD!

F1. copy first.txt and second.txt to a ftp server via Nautilus FTP connection.
F2. try to rename first.txt to second.txt. BAM! You've just lost the original
second.txt

S1. copy first.txt and second.txt to a samba server via Nautilus SMB connection.
S2. try to rename first.txt to second.txt. BAM! You've just lost the original
second.txt

This should not happen. Of course, Thierry is right, mv does not prompt.
In this case, please remove the prompt from Nautilus in D2 case (on the
desktop). Oh, the developer intent was to protect the user. In this
case, protect the user also when he/she is using smb or ftp in Nautilus
through gvfs.

Thanks,
Dan.

[Bug 533652] Re: critically low battery dialog cancel button is meaningless

2010-07-27 Thread Paul Sladen
So, just to confirm; there's two separate issues here:

  1. a _bug_, in notify-osd, in issuing drawing a dialogue with [Cancel] and
[OK] buttons, when there should just be a single [Dismiss] button
  2. gnome-power-manager, in requesting a non-expiring notification.

Which are exasperated by two further issues:

  a. g-p-m willing resends the (non-expiring) notification, thereby DoS'ing the
user's desktop. (bug #579245)
  b. g-p-m will issue the OMG CIRTICAL!! notification even when the battery is

[Bug 414107] Re: Palimpsest GUI impossible to use on small screen

2010-07-27 Thread Omer Akram
** Description changed:

- Palimpsest has reported SMART errors on my internal flash disk (do they
- even have SMART?) However the issue is that the GUI is larger than the
- small screen on my netbook (800x480).
+ gnome-disk-utility does not fit netbook screen. the window height is
+ much more than 576px which basically make the app unusable on a netbook
+ screen. The attached patch works fine as its already working in Meego
+ and also its attached to the upstream bug report but there has been no
+ activity from the upstream developers for more than 9months.

- Clicking any of the buttons in the GUI, or attempting to resize the
- left/right panes just flicks the entire interface from left to right. If
- I repeatedly click in random places, I might hit on a button when it's
- shifting from side-to-side but it's effectively unusable. The entire
- window is shifting from half-off-screen to the left, then half-off-
- screen to the right.
-
- I've not seen this behaviour on any other app within Ubuntu Karmic
- Alpha, so assume it's specific to Palimpsest. Hopefully this can be
- resolved so I can run further tests on my disk :)
+ TEST CASE: start gnome disk-utility on a netbook with 600px vertical
+ pixels, click on the name of your hardrive. gdu window will do some
+ weired things as it dont fit on the screen so basically becomes
+ unusable.

[Bug 579082] Re: Inbox folder tree is unresponsive

2010-07-27 Thread MS-TBWB
Ubuntu 10.04 evolution 2.28.3

I am experiencing the *exact* same problem! I have configured just one
e-mail account (IMAP with SSL)

Clicking the + to expand a folder is something like rolling dice. Gambling on
and clicking randomly *near* the + (just before/above/below/after) will often
allow me to expand the tree after a few tries.
However, with the expanded root folder still selected, clicking any subfolder
will collapse the root folder again!
With the root folder expanded I can only go into one of the subfolders using
the down arrow key.

I know only little about Evolution or Gnome internals and nothing about
how to file this as a bug elsewhere. I only experience this bug in
Evolution. So I hope one of the developers here will be so kind to pick
this up to get it to the right people. Thanks in advance!

I am ofcourse willing to perform tests or provide additional information if
requested.
Cheers mates

On my Lenovo T60 the Touchpad works great until I login using GDM.

After 2-3 seconds I've pressed Login it suddenly stops working and I
must use an external USB mouse.

I think it a different problem. In our case touchpad working well before
press the enable/ disable switch.. e then the pad still working but the
GUI has problems (freeze buttons, etc.)

to do a mental shift and that means a distraction, which means lost
work. It's not that I don't like it, I just think the default should be
status quo, and let the user decide later.

[Bug 41427] Re: slow keys can turn on surreptitiously cause confusion.

2010-07-27 Thread LuisMondesi
I have hit this bug before many times on previous versions of Ubuntu and
now on Lucid (10.04). Usually, I go to tty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1 works) and then
I kill compiz, which magically restores my keyboard and mouse input.

This time that didn't work so I left the window open and went to another
computer to research this. Then I found bug 59616 which is marked as a
duplicate of this one.

On one of the comment (Lars) it's mentioned to remove
.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/host-hostname/0/%gconf.xml and
retry.
Well, since I had a problem with the mouse too, I moved the whole peripherals
directory to /tmp and lo and behold, that did the trick.

This is the diff between those 2 directories:

[Bug 608833] Re: Gnome Panel hangs and renders touchpad and mouse unusable

2010-07-27 Thread JimP
I've had this problem since 9.10. It only started affecting me badly
enough to want to do something yesterday, and now I find there is a bug
report for it. Here's my setup, which differs in a number of ways to
jpangamarca's - specifically, I'm using the open source radeon driver
and I'm not using compiz at all.

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 (also affected me in 9.10)
Package: gnome-panel 1:2.30.2-0ubuntu0.2_i386
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-23.37-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5
Uname: Linux 2.6.32-24-generic i686
NonfreeKernelModules:
Architecture: i386
Date: Mon Jul 27 16:34:04 2010
InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release i386 (20100429)
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=(custom, user)
 LANG=en_GB.utf8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: gnome-panel

I have a mouse button remapping using xmodmap, as my mouse needs buttons 1 and
3 remapped to 8 and 9 when it is used in presenter mode.
I'm using the Human theme with a small number of customisations.
The problem happens with Firefox, Nautilus and maybe one or two other apps
open, but I have tried not using each of the other apps for a time, and it
still happens in the absence of other apps. Firefox and nautilus are often open
for long periods of time - like between kernel updates.

Other things I have noticed which may or may not be relevant:
Sometimes you can get out of the hang by switching to a virtual terminal then
back to X.
Closing nautilus sometimes causes the problem to go away.
Often a click away from the panel causes the item on the panel which is above
the mouse pointer to be activated - sometimes u clicking a different button
un-freezes the panel when this happens.
The panel is set to autohide, and one of the symptoms is it gets stuck in
either hidden or non-hidden mode.
Clicking on other applications buttons has no effect, although sometimes
opening a panel menu and clicking elsewhere on the desktop brings it out of
that mode.
I have seen similar behaviour when the machine is running very low on memory.
I do not get the behaviour on my other machine, which is rarely on for more
than a few hours continuously, and which is almost identical other than having
a more recent ATI graphics card, and uses fglrx.

As I see this problem pretty regularly, I can probably provide a
backtrace fairly soon if needed.

[Bug 610304] Re: gdm doesn't use ambiance

2010-07-27 Thread Andrew Berry
Unfortunately, nothing in the thread online works for getting a
screenshot anymore. However, through a bit of luck I noticed that x11vnc
can connect to a GDM session with:

x11vnc -display :0 -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-Vj6ZZp/database

Where the auth path will change a bit for each restart of GDM.

I've attached a screenshot.

[Bug 610513] [NEW] Power manager does critically low power option immediately after unplugging from power with old battery

2010-07-27 Thread Adam Siembida
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Package: /usr/bin/gnome-power-manager
Ubuntu Release: 10.04

I expect that the power manager will fire off the critically low
battery option when the battery has a small percentage of it's power
left, or a small estimated time remaining (5mins). This way instead of
the computer simply running out of power, it instead shuts itself down.

I have an older battery in my laptop that doesn't work very well, but it
still works. When I boot up Ubuntu it tells me that I have a low
capacity (34.5%) on my battery when fully charged, and it may be broken.

The problem is that the instant I pull the power plug out of my laptop,
a window pups up that the computer is going to hibernate. Regardless of
if I hit cancel or OK, the computer goes into hibernate a couple seconds
later. This shouldn't be happening because I can run my laptop for over
30 minutes on a full battery.

I am guessing this has something to do with my broken battery and the
way the power manager calculates what falls into the category of
critical battery life.

Re: [Bug 574876] Re: swell-foop segfaults with error 4 in libclutter-glx-1.0.so.0.200.4

2010-07-27 Thread Stephen Keller
I would agree, the interface to the old version of the game was vastly superior
in appearance, performance and general useability. Plus it did not have any
noticeable bugs. The new version seems like a rather incomplete alpha release
rather than a production-worthy application. Besides this annoying seg-fault
bug, the new interface frequently bogs down to the point that screen refreshes
after block removal can take seconds to complete (and this is on a 4GB i5
machine doing nothing else significant). Additionally, some major
functionality
remains unimplemented (undo for example). Makes me wish I knew something about
Gnome coding; it could be an interesting project to work on.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-07-27 Thread Kalle Tuulos
I upgraded my family data and backup servers from 8.04 to 10.04. Both
servers are happily living in my basement and they don't have monitor,
keyboard or mouse, as I have previously maintained them remotely through
XDMCP.

OK - I was stupid as I did not find out this problem before updating. My
humble request is that XDMCP support (including GUI to switch it on)
would be returned to Ubuntu as soon as possible.

About safety issues with XDMCP - I am working in a very large IT company
and it is happily using XDMCP. Previously there was an option to use
either Citrix or XDMCP for remote access, but our IT department decided
to ramp down Citrix. So the safety issues aren't visible at least in a
closed production environment.

Thanks a lot, Andrew. I see now what you mean with the screenshot. Just
in case you didn't know it yet: the ugly Windows Theme is called

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Please, take a look at these websites discussing similar issues:

Disabling MTP (or closing Rhythmbox altogether) brings the trackball

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2010-07-27 Thread Nick S
exitance says it pretty well.

And I'll add my recent observation that it doesn't make sense that
You're going for the keyboard anyway, hitting F2 isn't interruptive,
because 90% of the time when I'm renaming a file I'm not totally
renaming it. Instead I'm editing it, keeping most of the text. Meaning
once the filename is in edit mode I click to specify where I'm adding
text or which word(s) I'm replacing.

So instead the workflow looks like this: Mouse to select file, Keyboard
to F2 into rename mode, Mouse to select cursor position in filename,
Keyboard to type change in filename.

If I could rename with a second click, there would be one modal switch
instead of three.

Oh, and right-click, then find and select Rename from the context menu isn't
much better. Now we're talking finding and targeting additional screen
elements, a whole other story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts%27s_law

[Bug 605940] Re: evince does not display PDF correctly

2010-07-27 Thread Marcel Stimberg
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 321720 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321720

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
Thank you for your bug report. The PDF file has been created with a recent
Acrobat product and is only readable with the Acrobat Reader, not with any free
PDF reader (that I know of). This bug is known and has been reported as bug
#321720, so it is being marked as a duplicate such. Please look at the other
bug report (and the linked upstream bug) to see if there is any missing
information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the
bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in
the other report. Please continue to report any other bugs you may find.

And yet another missing birthday, 11/04/1937. The previous birthdays
that shows on my calendar is 11/03/1946 and 11/03/1951, one of these has
an anniversary in June. The next birthday that shows is after the
birthday on 11/04/1937 is 11/11/1937. I did not check to see if there
are any other birthdays missing between the 4th and the 11th.

[Bug 608833] Re: Gnome Panel hangs and renders touchpad and mouse unusable

2010-07-27 Thread jpangamarca
@JimP, please try to get the backtrace. I'll still try too, but
something happened: Just yesterday I disabled the nvidia propietary
driver to see if that was causing the nautilus and gnome-panel hangs,
but guess I'll never know because after disabling it, all I got on
system startup was a black screen. There was no way to repair X server,
so I had to reinstall Ubuntu, and I won't enable that driver for now. My
computer is way faster without it.

[Bug 587601] Re: No Logon screen after 'switching user', only an Ubuntu logo and the computers name

2010-07-27 Thread John Baptist
I used to have this issue, but I believe it was fixed in lucid-updates.
Sorry, I don't recall the exact bug. The problem, as I recall, was that
the fade-out from a logout set the screen gamma to zero, and this was
not restored. Do you still have this problem with a fully-updated lucid?

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-07-27 Thread Ilya Murav'jov
Hi, Alexander!

daniels i'm inclined to not apply it, as it directly contradicts the xkb
 spec, and is also apparently
buggy (see the upstream bug report with some people complaining that it
 breaks occasionally)

The patch is not buggy, the only issue complained was my own (see more at
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 ).
And the reason is known - LED's highlighting confilcts with the patch, 1) it
can be safely avoided, 2) it is just a little tech problem which can be done.

daniels well, we could write the spec better for xkb2 ;)
daniels yeah, i'm not personally affected by it as i only use US layout
daniels i can see that it sucks, but otoh i don't like contradicting the
 spec for no good reason
I start to think it is a discrimination.

No xkb2 writing is required! My first suggestion was to add my patch as
configuration option; so the default installation of Xorg works as
expected, and there is no spec contradiction. If a user wishes he(she)
turned that option on/off as one of many others you can see in Keyboard
Preferences.

xkb2 waiting is just 'when pigs fly' excuse.
