Unsupported type of task operation internal error. I am afraid that

[Bug 190227] Re: ia32 apps look for libs on the wrong place

2010-10-04 Thread Dean Diepeveen
I've just upgraded to the latest ia32-libs for Maverick. I get this error.
Setting up ia32-libs (20090808ubuntu7) ...
g_module_open() failed for
/usr/lib32/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-jasper.so:
libjasper.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

It is likely that this error is from a previous upgrade error. Is there
a simple way to check/fix the existence of these directories during the
upgrade?

[Bug 654391] [NEW] No obvious way for root to cleanly shut down a session

2010-10-04 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

There does not seem to be a way for root to cleanly shut down a
particular gnome-session.

Obviously restarting gdm works, but that kills all sessions. In my
environment, users
share machines and we have lots of switch user activity. What I'm really
trying
to do is to automatically clean up those sessions that are left and forgotten:
otherwise they build up and eventually every user is logged onto every machine.

Apparently, you need to send a message on the dbus to gnome-session, but
getting the session ID
for a particular user/process ID isn't trivial. One would really like to be
able to send
a signal to gnome-session, and have it gracefully shut down whatever it can.
(Obviously, I can do kill -9, but that can cause trouble if gnome-session needs
to do clean-up
activities.)

So, _basically_, the bug is that gnome-session ignores all signals. It
shouldn't. There are perfectly
good reasons for responding to signals.

[Bug 515139] Re: Icons from gnome panel are missing at random on startup

2010-10-04 Thread wonkothesane
Using Ubuntu 10.04 I have the same problem. The suggestion from above
(CTRL+ALT+F1, than CTRL+ALT+F7) did not work for me.
As I found out the applets are there; e.g. right-clicking where an applet
should be shows its context menu, but their symbols are simply not shown. What
does help here is resizing the panel. But of course this is no sensible
solution and this bug it should be fixed.

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2010-10-04 Thread Oli
If alt+prscr is really rendering a sysrq event, it would appear that
sysrq is not a bindable event. I can't get it to show up in anything
(including xev).

While I can see the technical argument for making alt trigger the
alternate key, the solution in the latest kernel is at least 10 years
too late. There is too much documentation and too much known behaviour
to try (or want) to reverse things now without upsetting everybody who
expects a windowshot from an alt+prscr combo.

It's also well known that if you want sysrq, you use control+alt+prscr.
I assume this key-combo is also broken now (or it renders as
control+sysrq).

Everything about this stinks to me and I think we should fight upstream
all the way on this, disabling the new kernel configuration by default.

[Bug 574693] Re: nautilus ftp file transfer hangs in lucid

2010-10-04 Thread Christophe Van Reusel
Some additionall Info I also send it to bugzilla 630348

I just found out that problem only occurs when :

I select an folder(map) (with nautilus) on the ftp server, copy it. Then paste
it to a place into my home folder (or other where My user name has write
acces)but on my pc.

When a select an folder + one or more other files, copy it . Then paste again
to me it does work perfect.

When a make connection with two different ftp server. Copy from server 1 paste
to an writable place on server 2 The problem does NOT occur at all.

So somehow it does lock up if I only select just a map(folder) and copy from
server to myself, or from my self to server.

Does not occur if I select just a map (folder) and copy from server 1 to server
2 using nautilus.

Never occurs if a select a map(folder) + one or more file(s)

this strange behaviour. But I gues a very small thing into source .

This problem is from ubuntu 10.04 kernel 2.6.32-xx nautilus 2.30.0-xxx and
higher kernels tested up to ubuntu 10.10 kernel 2.6.35-22 nautilus 2.31.92

This problem for me is not prestent on ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-22 with
nautilus 2.28.1

think a can't find more info then that. also nowhere any error report when
problem occur.

[Bug 654429] [NEW] evulution leaks memory

2010-10-04 Thread paraiko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When evolution is left open it slowly eats the available memory (I have
often seen 2GiB of memory usage by the evolution process ) and swap
space. Sometimes it crashes all by itself, sometimes I have quit the
program or kill the process. because the system comes to a craw because
of the heavy swap usage.

Even if this is not a memory leak I still have the impression that
evolution has a rather big memory footprint...

I haven't test Ubuntu Desktop so I don't know, if it's only Unity

It was not the first time, when this strange behaviour occurs, but I
cannot tell how to reproduce this bug. I will pay attention next time

[Bug 315913] Re: Brasero - recognises a 4.7 gb writable dvd as 4.3 gb

2010-10-04 Thread Andreas Saurwein
Not sure if its the same bug but seems related:

When I open Brasero with an empty disk inserted already, click on Burn ISO
Image, it shows me that there is an blank DVD with 4.3 Gb free inserted (though
its 4.7 by manufacturer definition). Yet after choosing an ISO to burn (4.7
Gb), Brasero changes the information shown to 4.0 Gb free space. Somewhere
between real free space and calculated free space after selecting ISO it gets
lost.
I also cant burn any DVD where this happens. Brasero starts the process and
gets stuck in preparing to write forever.

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2010-10-04 Thread Kazade
It's always been the case, on both GNOME and Windows that ALT+PrtScrn
takes a screenshot of the active Window. This is a really bad regression
from a user experience POV, especially for non-technical users that take
screenshots of active windows to send when they have issues.

If we are now saying that ALT+PrntScrn *shouldn't* take a screenshot of
the active window then we should at least have an alternative key
binding sorted out and have it really well documented by release,
otherwise revert whatever change caused this until Natty.

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-04 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
@Karl Lattimer: I haven't got this bug at the GDM screen, but later when
I'm using (typically web browser, like chromium) to write mail in a non-
English language which requires one of my non-US layouts. Usually then
if I press scroll lock (it's configured to switch layout) the problem
occures: layouts switches automatically like crazy, scroll lock led
flashes rapidly (it's configured to show the non-primary layout is
active, I have four btw), and if I press a key it produces random
character each time, I guess based on the fact which was the actual
layout at the very moment when I press it. So even pressing the same key
for long, produces an odd sequence of different characters. But,
please note that the kbd indicator applet itself does _NOT_ change, ie
it says I am using US layout even if it's not true! Killing g-s-d
seems to fix the problem though ...

[Bug 587658] Re: problems with long messages

2010-10-04 Thread Simos Xenitellis
What you need to do is write down good instructions on how to reproduce.
You need to figure out whether this is a protocol-specific issue (for example,
it happens just with MSN clients sending to empathy) or a generic issue with
all protocols.

dicorfu, try asking at forum.ubuntu-gr.org for help to diagnose, or the
ubuntu-gr mailing list.

It appears that there might be some limit to the size of the text box of
the chat.

Empathy bugs are recorded at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=empathy
A quick look at the chat messages did not show something relevant to MSN.
You can try to search a bit more.

@Martin, tried under Lucid? ALT+PrScr used to snapshot a window.

Yes, I am both using SysRq and PrintScr regularly, and I didn't notice
a problem in lucid either. Maybe it's really specific to en-GB, I'm
not using that (only en-US and de-nodeadkeys).

If Alt+PrintScreen triggers a screenshot, that's indeed a bug.

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-04 Thread Karl Lattimer
I'm looking through the code and can't see a possibility of changing the
popup group item rapidly, so there's other possibilities as to what is
triggering it, I'm repeatedly changing layouts to test it, and it's
pretty hard to trigger I need something which is confirmed to reproduce
the bug always before i can fix it.

There's one possibility that the configuration is being changed and
that's triggering a menu rebuild, which as we've learned in the gnome-
power-manager bug can eat memory - but not CPU.

[Bug 654521] [NEW] disabling ssh-agent support still export SSH_AUTH_SOCK

2010-10-04 Thread Tim Stoop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Hi there,

First off:

t...@proton:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release:10.10
t...@proton:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-keyring
gnome-keyring:
  Installed: 2.92.92.is.2.31.91-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2.92.92.is.2.31.91-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2.92.92.is.2.31.91-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://apt-proxy/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
t...@proton:~$

I'm using the RC of Maverick, I just upgraded my old Lucid installation.
Running into a problem where disabling ssh support in seahorse still
exports (and therefore overrides) SSH_AUTH_SOCK.

I executed gconftool-2 --set -t bool /apps/gnome-keyring/daemon-
components/ssh false and checked with gconftool-2 --get /apps/gnome-
keyring/daemon-components/ssh if it was indeed set to false. Then I
rebooted and logged in again. Opened a console and did env | grep SSH.
This still displayed SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-Aju8Gs/ssh and not the
expected gpg-agent socket. I've modified the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90gpg-
agent script to include --enable-ssh-support and when I run it, it does
export the correct variables. It's just that starting Gnome overrides
it.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Tim

2010-10-04 Thread Paul Saunders
At the top of the Gnome panel there is a tab called 'Places' if you go
down that tab then you will see folders called 'Files', 'documents',
'Downloads', etc. if you then select one of these folders it opens in
'movie player'

hope that make it more clear.

[Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout

2010-10-04 Thread Oded Arbel
Rich: the problem is that the gnome-settings-daemon shows a keyboard
indicator applet on the panel when the Ubuntu-specific indicator
applet isn't shown.

As I've noted in comment #21, The gnome-settings-daemon keyboard
indicator does not indicate the layout - it just shows a keyboard icon
and you actually have to open it to figure out what layout is being
used. The Ubuntu specific indicator applet that uses a menu system to
show icons for activities (*) works correctly, but this bug report is
not about the indicator applet, its about the gnome-settings-daemon
keyboard applet.

(*) which is a weird distinction - I understand how copying files is an
activity and possibly how being connected to the network in activity,
but I don't see how having a volume control or a keyboard layout control
is an activity.

2010-10-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Oli [2010-10-04 11:42 -]:
While I can see the technical argument for making alt trigger the
alternate key, the solution in the latest kernel is at least 10 years
 too late.

I don't believe that Maverick's kernel changed anything in that
regard; the SysRq key functionaly has been pretty much the same since
Linux' inception. It's more likely that something changed in X.org or
the desktop environments.

It's also well known that if you want sysrq, you use
control+alt+prscr.

Where is that documented? It's at least news to me.

I assume this key-combo is also broken now (or it renders as
 control+sysrq).

At least here it works just like alt+sysrq, i. e. actually triggers a
sysrq.

Everything about this stinks to me and I think we should fight upstream
all the way on this, disabling the new kernel configuration by default.

Do you have proof (or a patch) which would actually identify this as a
kernel change? That would be helpful to actually understand what's
going on here. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 654555] [NEW] missing associations for remote Recent Documents

2010-10-04 Thread staho
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

It is similar to bug #211743, yet it affects only some remote files.

Having opened a local any file I get a nice any file item at the top of
Places | Recent Documents.
If the file is located on a SMB server (say: Windows 2003), the item in Recent
Docs is smb:any%20file** and the story begins, ie. the associations get lost:

*.txt, *.jpg, *.png -- OK.

*.odt files are launched with File Roller (instead of OOo). If I remove
their associations with File Roller and Mounting archive, the file
opens fine. Having File Roller back in associations (NOT as default
one!) I get files opened with it.

*.pdf and *.od[gs] are opened in gedit, although there is NO such
association.

** As for the file names: it is confusing for anybody using more than ASCII. Is
it easy to guess, that %C5%A0%C5%A4%C5%98%C4%82%C5%87%C4%9E%C4%9A is just

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-04 Thread divan
But, please note that the kbd indicator applet itself does _NOT_ change, ie
it says I am using US layout even if it's not true!
Another possibility of this is _very_ fast switching, so you even can't
recognize it changes. I saw such high speed switching for flags - it were
cycling so rapidly, that US flag was visible all the time and only when
system load became high, I could notice other layouts flag images appearing.

[Bug 647182] Re: spontaneous reboot on logging in xubuntu maverick

2010-10-04 Thread impert
To get an idea of whether this is a problem in gdm or xfce I thought I'd try a
vanilla Ubuntu (ie Gnome) live cd installation. Alas, after a couple of splash
screens, the computer reboots before getting to the installation screen. Looks
like I'll be stuck in Lucid for a while.
Funnily enough , Hardy, Jaunty, Karmic, Lucid, Debian Lenny, Aptosid, Trisquel,
and a bunch of other distros, both Debian based and non-Debian, all boot
perfectly on this machine. And xfce works perfectly with a number of them.

[Bug 654105] Re: Transferring songs from iPod to local drive does not copy extension (ie, .mp3), confusing some portable devices

2010-10-04 Thread nicholas
Omer, thanks for your help.

I've tried rhythmbox from your ppa and the problem is still not solved.

Browsing the iPod with Nautilus displays the .mp3 extension, however
these are not copied onto the local drive.

I do not have the lame decoder package installed.
