[Bug 654391] [NEW] No obvious way for root to cleanly shut down a session
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-session There does not seem to be a way for root to cleanly shut down a particular gnome-session. Obviously restarting gdm works, but that kills all sessions. In my environment, users share machines and we have lots of switch user activity. What I'm really trying to do is to automatically clean up those sessions that are left and forgotten: otherwise they build up and eventually every user is logged onto every machine. Apparently, you need to send a message on the dbus to gnome-session, but getting the session ID for a particular user/process ID isn't trivial. One would really like to be able to send a signal to gnome-session, and have it gracefully shut down whatever it can. (Obviously, I can do kill -9, but that can cause trouble if gnome-session needs to do clean-up activities.) So, _basically_, the bug is that gnome-session ignores all signals. It shouldn't. There are perfectly good reasons for responding to signals. [Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function
If alt+prscr is really rendering a sysrq event, it would appear that sysrq is not a bindable event. I can't get it to show up in anything (including xev). While I can see the technical argument for making alt trigger the alternate key, the solution in the latest kernel is at least 10 years too late. There is too much documentation and too much known behaviour to try (or want) to reverse things now without upsetting everybody who expects a windowshot from an alt+prscr combo. It's also well known that if you want sysrq, you use control+alt+prscr. I assume this key-combo is also broken now (or it renders as control+sysrq). Everything about this stinks to me and I think we should fight upstream all the way on this, disabling the new kernel configuration by default. -- ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/642792 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

It's always been the case, on both GNOME and Windows that ALT+PrtScrn takes a screenshot of the active Window. This is a really bad regression from a user experience POV, especially for non-technical users that take screenshots of active windows to send when they have issues. If we are now saying that ALT+PrntScrn *shouldn't* take a screenshot of the active window then we should at least have an alternative key binding sorted out and have it really well documented by release, otherwise revert whatever change caused this until Natty. -- ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/642792 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]
@Karl Lattimer: I haven't got this bug at the GDM screen, but later when I'm using (typically web browser, like chromium) to write mail in a non- English language which requires one of my non-US layouts. Usually then if I press scroll lock (it's configured to switch layout) the problem occures: layouts switches automatically like crazy, scroll lock led flashes rapidly (it's configured to show the non-primary layout is active, I have four btw), and if I press a key it produces random character each time, I guess based on the fact which was the actual layout at the very moment when I press it. So even pressing the same key for long, produces an odd sequence of different characters. But, please note that the kbd indicator applet itself does _NOT_ change, ie it says I am using US layout even if it's not true! [Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout
Rich: the problem is that the gnome-settings-daemon shows a keyboard indicator applet on the panel when the Ubuntu-specific indicator applet isn't shown. As I've noted in comment #21, The gnome-settings-daemon keyboard indicator does not indicate the layout - it just shows a keyboard icon and you actually have to open it to figure out what layout is being used. The Ubuntu specific indicator applet that uses a menu system to show icons for activities (*) works correctly, but this bug report is not about the indicator applet, its about the gnome-settings-daemon keyboard applet. (*) which is a weird distinction - I understand how copying files is an activity and possibly how being connected to the network in activity, but I don't see how having a volume control or a keyboard layout control is an activity. -- New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531173 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function
Oli [2010-10-04 11:42 -]: While I can see the technical argument for making alt trigger the alternate key, the solution in the latest kernel is at least 10 years too late. I don't believe that Maverick's kernel changed anything in that regard; the SysRq key functionaly has been pretty much the same since Linux' inception. It's more likely that something changed in X.org or the desktop environments. It's also well known that if you want sysrq, you use control+alt+prscr. Where is that documented? It's at least news to me. I assume this key-combo is also broken now (or it renders as control+sysrq). At least here it works just like alt+sysrq, i. e. actually triggers a sysrq. Everything about this stinks to me and I think we should fight upstream all the way on this, disabling the new kernel configuration by default. Do you have proof (or a patch) which would actually identify this as a kernel change? That would be helpful to actually understand what's going on here. [Bug 654555] [NEW] missing associations for remote Recent Documents
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel It is similar to bug #211743, yet it affects only some remote files. Having opened a local any file I get a nice any file item at the top of Places | Recent Documents. If the file is located on a SMB server (say: Windows 2003), the item in Recent Docs is smb:any%20file** and the story begins, ie. the associations get lost: *.txt, *.jpg, *.png -- OK. *.odt files are launched with File Roller (instead of OOo). If I remove their associations with File Roller and Mounting archive, the file opens fine. Having File Roller back in associations (NOT as default one!) I get files opened with it. *.pdf and *.od[gs] are opened in gedit, although there is NO such association. ** As for the file names: it is confusing for anybody using more than ASCII.
