[Bug 122295] Re: Notification Area doesn't work

2010-10-11 Thread Rob Speer
I encountered this problem.

On the Add to Panel menu, you can choose to add a notification area
to the panel, but it doesn't do anything except add some blank space
that makes the network icon move around in wonky ways. Instead, you have
to add indicator applet, which seems to do the same thing as the
notification area once did (it has the volume control and the messaging
icon in it, for example).

And neither of these are intuitive names when what you really want to
add is a volume control.

 * Is this reproducible with all CDs?

No. It has only happened on one CD and the same thing doesn't seem to
be happening today. I installed some extra scripts from the repository
yesterday and this is the first time I've restarted the computer, maybe
that's why? Sorry, I may have been wasting your time, but I didn't get
a restart message last night.

 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

Initially, I just put the CD in the drive and tried to add it to the
library. It asked for two extra scripts which I downloaded. I
restarted the program, but not the computer. I got the unable to
locate encoding profile for mimetype message.

[Bug 658159] [NEW] When pressing previous/next song Rhythmbox crashes (listening to iPod only)

2010-10-11 Thread moly82
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I'm on Maverick Meerkat, all updated to the very latest packages.

When I connect my iPod to the USB port, and select Rhythmbox to listen
to it on the dialog that appears, I can see the iPod content.

Then I can play a song doubleclicking on it, but at this point if a want
to skip the song and press the next song button (or also the previous
song button) Rhythmbox crashes and I have to restart it.

Also if I doubleclick on another song while I am listening another song
it crashes.

Instead, if I wait for the song to finish, it automatically goes to the
next song without any problems.

So as a temporary fix if I want to skip a song I go fast forward till
near the finish (let's say the song is 4:00 minutes, I go to 3:58), and
wait for it to automatically go to the next song.

Please fix it! Thanks!

I have a pretty old iPod (iPod Photo 30gb), could this be the reason?

If you need any logs let me know, I can post them tonight when I come
back home..

Anyway, congratulations for you work, last ubuntu (and rhythmbox) really
rocks!

REQUEST: please add the browse by compilation feature that is present
in iTunes, this will organize much better our databases, reducing the
number of artists and albums!

[Bug 658157] [NEW] gnome-screensaver does not have an accessible way to enter password (such as onboard)

2010-10-11 Thread Matthew L Daniel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

STEPS
1. install Ubuntu on a slate tablet (no physical keyboard)
2. after installation, go get tea
3. observe that Ubuntu has locked the screen with a password
4. go track down a USB keyboard

This is a bug because the password dialog does not honor the usage of
onboard (or seemingly any other on-screen keyboard) in the same way that
gdm does. When I logged in to Ubuntu, I had the option of popping up an
onscreen keyboard, and was able subsequently enable it for my normal X
session via System Preferences Accessability.

[Bug 638865] Re: nautilus crash slow performance folder browse

2010-10-11 Thread wilbur
You are lucky, it just took me 22 seconds to open the /usr/share
directory with 333 entries. This is with a fresh install of 10.10 64 bit
on an i7-980 with 12 gig of ram. 10.10 Updated every day. If there is a
solution to this please post the information.

46 seconds to open /usr/share/doc with 1,500 entries. If there is a
setting somewhere that would make Nautilus usable I would love to know
where it is.

[Bug 364084] Re: Nautilus cannot handle ftp places message

2010-10-11 Thread Mossroy
I encounter the same problem on Ubuntu 9.04, with the FTP server of a Freebox
(an ISP ADSL box).
The FTP server is not accessible via Nautilus, because it stops on the same
error message :
-- 220 Welcome to Freebox FTP Server.
-- FEAT
-- 211-Extensions supported:
-- UTF8
-- 211 End
feature UTF8 supported
-- OPTS UTF8 ON
-- 500 Syntax error, command unrecognized.
error: Opération non prise en charge
send_reply, failed: 1

It works fine on Ubuntu 10.04 and (I guess) on 9.10, certainly because
they use gvfs 1.3.4, whereas 9.04 uses 1.2.2.

Do you see other workarounds than :
- upgrade to 9.10 or 10.04 : this is probably the best thing to do as 9.04 will
soon be unsupported
- use another FTP client

I quickly tried to install the gvfs package of Karmic (version
1.4.1-0ubuntu1) on Jaunty, but failed because it seems to drag too many
dependencies upgrade...

[Bug 625793] Re: Regression: Multiple Keyboard Layouts unusable: continuously changes layout + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-11 Thread Karl Lattimer
I've just uploaded a change suggested to me over irc from ssh_rpc1 (not
sure who that is, but thanks!). The change is very simply to remove the
get_state which should stop the infinite loop. This *should* fix the
problem. I still have trouble reproducing this bug reliably so please
test test test!

This has been uploaded to my PPA and should be building/releasing soon-

[Bug 658191] [NEW] ubuntu 10.10 choosing open with changes default action on double click

2010-10-11 Thread TommyBoy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

To reproduce:

I was in nautilus looking at my music files on my NAS i right clicked a
folder full of music and said open with Movie Player. Great all the
music was added into movie player and started to play. However now when
ever i click on any folders they get opened in movie player not
nautilus. This is a real inconvenience as i can no longer access my
folders by clicking on them. Other associations like this could really
begin to break things.

Expected:

Nautilus open up as normal or that the open with is a one time choice
and possibly a shortcut is added into the context menu for next time.

[Bug 658190] [NEW] Disc number cannot be changed en mass.

2010-10-11 Thread Carl Simpson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Release version: Ubuntu 10.10

Package version: Rhythmbox 0.13.1-0ubuntu5

It has been the case for me that I sometimes need to change the disc
number (by adding it at all, mostly) for various tracks, whether because
they have lost metadata in conversion, arrived without it, or been
corrupted, etc. This hasn't happened often, to be fair.

Expected: I can highlight the offending tracks, right click, select
properties and give them all a disc number.

What happens: If you have multiple tracks selected, disc number is not
present in the properties dialogue. Instead you must go through them
one by one, by one, by one, by one…

A minor annoyance at best.

[Bug 658121] Re: evolution calendar becomes evolution mail when notification applet is used

2010-10-11 Thread Keith Gillis
Ctrl+1 - Ctrl+5 do nothing and there is no View Window menu. I just
checked the changelog.

evolution (2.30.3-1ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * backport some changes from debian
- new version fixing a crash (LP: #602907)
  * debian/patches/01_ubuntu_signature.patch:
- add ubuntu signature to new account
  * debian/patches/02_fix_missing_include_for_composer.patch:
- add a missing include for composer to build
  * debian/patches/89_express.patch:
- remerged evolution express with great care
- fix impossibility to set keep mail on server for POP account
  (LP: #615023)
  * debian/patches/90_disable_deprecation_warning.patch: refreshed
  * debian/patches/91_git_fix_format_itip.patch: removed, included upstream
  * backport debian/patches/91_git_additional_chinese_translations.patch,
debian/patches/91_git_fix_untranslatable_list_editor.patch from trunk

I noticed the evolution express part and guessed that these changes were
evolution express. The gnome web site said that evolution express is
an effort to optimize evolution for
netbooks(http://live.gnome.org/Evolution/Art). I tried logging into a
new gnome desktop session and started evolution. Under a desktop session
evolution behaved normally.

I use a netbook so, I'm all for optimizing evolution for small screens,
but evolution express does not seem ready. There does not seem to be any
way to access tasks, and I don't see any way to change the privacy
setting on an appointment. The interfaces to some important features
seem to have been removed. I'm going to see if I can make evolution open
in it's normal mode even while I'm in an ubuntu netbook session. I think
for now the normal mode should be changed back to the default for
netbook sessions.

2010-10-11 Thread Ilja Sekler
@Karl:

Sorry for such a question, but is there a public bzr branch to monitor
the actual state of your work on g-s-d before it lands in the ppa and
gets in reach of 'apt-get source'? This is sort of irritating on
launchpad in general that patches are mentioned but not automatically
attached to a bug.

2010-10-11 Thread Keith Gillis
Ok, in the menu editor there were two entries for evolution, one that
started evolution with a --express option and a disabled entry that
started it without --express. I switched the two entries and now
everthings normal again. The package maintainers should consider
issueing an update to leave express mode off by default. I found it
frusterating and the reason for the changes in the interface wasn't made
clear.

[Bug 625793] Re: Regression: Multiple Keyboard Layouts unusable: continuously changes layout + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-11 Thread Ilja Sekler
I've built g-s-d 2.32.0-0ubuntu4 locally, installed the .deb and it has
an unpleasant habit not to react to the keyboard shortcut for switching
layouts during the first ~5 seconds+ of a gnome session even after
clicking on the desktop or opening a menu (which was necessary before).
Later, when opening a new window, the first attempt to switch kbd layout
with a shortcut always fails, subsequent ones work.

[Bug 658268] [NEW] [Maverick] F-Spot shows no thumbnails, crashes on picture view

2010-10-11 Thread Photon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

After the update from Lucid to Maverick (which otherwise ran perfectly)
I get a crash of F-Spot (f-spot 0.8.0-1 from the official
repositories).

When starting F-Spot no thumbnails are shown in the main window, just
something like a table where the thumbnails should be.

When double clicking one of the non-existing thumbnails, there is a
short moment when you can see the big picture but after that F-Spot
crashes.

Debug output attached.

[Bug 658267] [NEW] GIMP sends blank page when printing

2010-10-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

I have a fully updated Maverick 64-bit (somewhere between RC and final).
The printer I am using here is the HP PhotoSmart Premium C309g-m with
the hpcups driver.

It is impossible to print from the GIMP (standard print dialog, not the
Gutenprint one). Instead of sending the image data to CUPS, GIMP simply
sends a blank page of the given paper size. One can see by also getting
the blank page via Print to File that this is really a problem of GIMP
and not of the print filters.

To reproduce open a photo taken with a digital camera with GIMP (in my
case a JPEG with 3072x2304 pixels). The photo gets displayed correctly.
Then do the ugly method of printing photos from GNOME apps (see also bug
657505):

1. Choose File - Page Setup
2. In the dialog choose the desired printer in the first drop-down, then choose
the desired paper size in the second drop-down, and after that the orientation
of the photo.
3. Choose File - Print
4. Choose the desired printer (again), go through the tabs and check whether
everything is OK. Especially make sure that the photo tray is chosen on the
Page Setup tab, that print quality lis Best and that color output is set.
After that click Print. Especially note here that also the preview on the
Image Settings tab is blank.
5. Click Print and as the preview on the Image Settings tab promises a
blank sheet of the selected paper size and type comes out of the printer.

[Bug 625793] Re: Regression: Multiple Keyboard Layouts unusable: continuously changes layout + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-11 Thread Karl Lattimer
@Ilja, the patch is a distro patch in the debian/patches folder of the
package, so working on a bzr branch isn't really required. I know it
could be irritating but as soon as I've done a test build, install and
restart of gsd I then build the source and upload it. So there's really
no delay that you'd notice.

The points you note about changing the layout is either because the
system is under load or some other transient error as the code to
actually react to the keyboard shortcut hasn't been changed at all.

@Eugene, thanks for testing, please keep testing, if this fixes it today
then I'll push to get it out the door.

[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-10-11 Thread Hsin-Yi, Chen (hychen)
I agree with Gunnar Hjalmarsson, if a user changes the language in GDM,
it should only change the interface language(set LANGUAGE, LC_MESSAGE
variable), not ALL locale seetings.

As a Taiwan user, the default display language after Ubuntu installed is
Traditional Chinese, but I prefer my interface message displays in
English and keep the currency, datetime, formate, input method is zh_TW.

To have language-selector and location-selector option in GDM would be
better.

I believe this requirement is also needed by foreigns live in Taiwan.
(who may are married with Taiwanese or are studying in Taiwan school.)

2010-10-11 Thread Anthony Papillion
Public bug reported:

WHAT I EXPECTED TO HAPPEN:
I expected the edited contact to be saved back to my contact list complete with

WHAT HAPPENED:
After clicking the 'Save' button, the contact editor grayed out and became
inactive. Evolution also became unresponsive and could not be terminated by
either using the 'X' at the top of the screen or using File Quit. Only
'kill' or 'killall' worked to terminate the application. The edited contact

[Bug 620331] Re: please drop icon from keyboard indicator

2010-10-11 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Yura, you're talking about a notification area item. The new menu does
not use a notification area item.

There's no point in confirming the bug yet again, or expressing
surprise that it's not fixed, when I explained seven weeks ago why it
couldn't be fixed for 10.10. All going according to plan, it will be
fixed in Ubuntu 11.04.

** Summary changed:

- please drop icon from keyboard indicator
+ Keyboard menu icon needlessly has both icon and label

** Summary changed:

- Keyboard menu icon needlessly has both icon and label
+ Keyboard menu title needlessly has both icon and label

[Bug 625793] Re: Regression: Multiple Keyboard Layouts unusable: continuously changes layout + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-11 Thread Ilja Sekler
@Karl:

The points you note about changing the layout is either because
the system is under load or some other transient error as the code
to actually react to the keyboard shortcut hasn't been changed at all.

I'm not quite sure about the first seconds after the start of a gnome
session, but the issue with the first attempt to switch layout in a new
window failing is not transient and not related to system load. The
workaround is to Alt+Tab to another window and back. This problem didn't
exist with g-s-d 2.32.0-0ubuntu3.

 This problem didn't exist with g-s-d 2.32.0-0ubuntu3.

Please disregard this statement. I was plain wrong. The issue with the
first attempt to switch the keyboard layout in a new window ineffective
is reproducible in 2.32.0-0ubuntu3 and in 2.32.0-0ubuntu2 as well. I'll
file a new bug if this wasn't reported yet.

languages for text and numbert etc. and then starting the most commonly
