[Bug 641357] Re: Required method to remove rhythmbox from soundmenu does not exist or is not obvious enough

2010-11-29 Thread Jan Schuermann
perhaps it should have the hard-option like in messaging menu to set a link
in /usr/share/indicators/...
but better behaviour for ALL indicator-applets would be a preferences dialog
with right click or in system control center...?!

[Bug 682588] [NEW] gedit hangs when opening large XML file

2010-11-29 Thread lokster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Actually, this problem affects all GtkSourceView-based editors I have tried.
They seem unable to handle (not so) big text files. I mean ~10MB. The editor
just hangs for long time.
When (if) it finally opens the file, any editing is practically impossible -
its VERY slow.

Did I say I use telepathy-gabble 0.11.0-1 without problem? Andrew, do
you mind doing the same? I also have empathy 2.32.1-0ubuntu2; something

I have something like this in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/natty.list

deb http://ubuntu.cn99.com/ubuntu/ natty-backports restricted universe

deb http://ubuntu.cn99.com/ubuntu/ natty-security restricted universe

and in /etc/apt/preferences

Explanation: next generation (maybe there was no codename given (well, not
always)!?)
Package: *
Pin: release v=11.04

[Bug 678423] Re: Keyboard shortcut Super+p causes entire screen to redraw

My case i a bit different. I also have always had Superp to open Pidgin.
Recently I added Pidgin PPA to the repositories and the shortcut stopped
working.
If I assign a different shortcut like Supero then it works and Pidgin opens,
if I assign a different program to Superp it also works!
This is very strange.

[Bug 629257] Re: indicator applet 0.4.6: Laptop battery (estimating...) for days on end when discharge/charge time not known

2010-11-29 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
What any particular menu says has nothing at all to do with indicator-
applet.

** Package changed: indicator-applet (Ubuntu) = gnome-power-manager
(Ubuntu)

** Changed in: indicator-applet
   Status: Confirmed = Invalid

** Summary changed:

- indicator applet 0.4.6: Laptop battery (estimating...) for days on end when
discharge/charge time not known
+ Laptop battery (estimating...) for days on end when discharge/charge time
not known

** Description changed:

- The drop-down menu for the indicator-applet battery icon menu says
+ The drop-down menu for the gnome-power-manager battery status menu says
  Laptop battery (estimating...)

At a minimum this be fixed to read Laptop batter (estimating time...)
or Laptop battery (estimating battery life...).

Ideally if the remaining battery *time* is not known (because less than
sufficient datapoints have been collected to enable estimation) then the
percentage should be displayed in-lieu. The percentage is already
available and is used to drive the indicator-applet icon itself.

The current implementation is specified by:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BatteryStatusMenu#Items

but because the estimating... text can exist for days-on-end (nearly a
week in the case of this computer) it probably needs a slight tweak or
design addition to take account of the time estimation not being
available for long periods of time.

See bug #629258 for previous (lukewarm) discussions on the lower-stack
issues. This two bugs might want re-splitting/sorting again based on
those that relate to the chrono estimate not being known, and those that
relate to the pointless display of that unknown data for long periods of
  time.

** Summary changed:

- Laptop battery (estimating...) for days on end when discharge/charge time
not known
+ Laptop battery (estimating...) -estimating what?

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2010-11-29 Thread Alan
The worrying thing is that it doesn't lock the screen immediately..
there is a couple of seconds where a user could close a window or launch
an application.. perhaps even a script from an automounted drive.. if
the system is under a lot of load then the delay is even longer.

A clear security vulnerability that has gone un-addressed for years...

[Bug 643910] Re: No effect when unchecking Compress weekends in month view

So this appears to be an Ubuntu-specific issue, not appearing on other

other people are not? For example, the patch from comment #6 ? In which
case there's nothing that upstream can do, and it really has to be
resolved at the root cause, i.e. with the Ubuntu-specific modification.

[Bug 682629] [NEW] occasionally moves to occupy 50% hoz space of screen

2010-11-29 Thread Jon Dowland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a single gnome-panel at the top of my screen.

Occasionally, the panel moves to occupy the right-hand 50% of the
screen, horizontally. The panel also stretches off past the visible
edge on the RHS. It's as if the panel hasn't changed shape at all, but
believes the screen to begin 50% to the right of where it actually does.

I seem to recall in the past when this has happened that the wallpaper
can be drawn badly too. This might have been when I let nautilus draw
the desktop, although currently I have that disabled to avoid another
bug.

Killing the panel and starting afresh resolves the problem.

[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-11-29 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Martin,

During our talk in #ubuntu-desktop last friday, you mentioned the
possibility to drop ~/.profile for storing the user language environment
and use /var/cache/gdm/$USER/dmrc instead. I think that may be a
practicable approach with the advantage that there is a safe method in
place for writing to disk. I added the keys Langlist and LCMess to
dmrc and rewrote language-environment.sh (attached).

There are a couple of matters I'd like to talk over before I proceed.
You mentioned that the Language value in dmrc must represent a valid
locale because of other *dms, but I fear a problem there and don't quite
follow you. Aren't we working with the Ubuntu model for locale
environment irrespective of the desktop GUI?

Kubuntu is the other pending issue, which I wrote about in comment #64
above.

Rgds,
Gunnar

[Bug 616682] Re: Backport system-tools-backends 2.10.0 to Lucid

2010-11-29 Thread Colin Watson
Thanks for this suggestion! I think that the easiest way to move this
forward (i.e. the way most likely to be accepted) would be to prepare a
targeted backport of just the bug-fixes, without things like whitespace
changes, translation updates (which would need to go in language packs
for an Ubuntu stable release anyway), etc. I agree that 2.10.0 doesn't
seem to change much beyond the bug-fixes, but a diff that's absolutely
clearly bug fixes only would be easier to get through the stable
release update process. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for details.

Are you OK with preparing this, or do you need assistance?

[Bug 539477] Re: Video out hot key sends super + p + return on many upcoming Dell HP systems

2010-11-29 Thread Shimon Rura
Sakumatti Luukkonen: I had a similar problem -- I use Super+p frequently
as a custom keyboard binding (switching workspaces). Since my latest
apt-get upgrade this resulted in screen flicker or unwanted resolution
changes, as well as preventing the keypress from reaching my window
manager. Thanks for helping me narrow down the issue to gnome-settings-
daemon!

I found the following workaround. Using gconf-editor, find the following conf
key:
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/xrandr/active
And set it to false (not checked). The change should be effective immediately
after the edit.

This may disable other useful behavior, but I haven't personally noticed
any ill effects. I could imagine it might impact settings proper display
settings on login, though.

Re: [Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-11-29 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Gunnar,

Gunnar Hjalmarsson [2010-11-24 17:20 -]:
Please note that the gdm patch, i.e. the Xsession code changes, is not
part of my suggestion any longer. [...] As you know, I tried to
'sell' the idea upstream, but wasn't very successful...

Right, but I think we should still patch the Xsession script in the
Ubuntu gdm package instead of this profile.d hacking; first, it would
be a bit confusing for someone who looks at gdm's script, and second,
it hasn't been tested with other login managers and might just break
stuff there.

I think the gdm patch will be rather small, so that it won't be a
burden to maintain.

As a result of that, I replaced the previously suggested Xsession
changes with two new language-selector files:
 /etc/profile.d/gdm-lang-unset.sh
 /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/language-environment.sh

That would again duplicate code, though? Also, it would mean that gdm
behaves differently when language-selector is installed or not. I'm
not totally avert to this, but I'd rather avoid it. (See above)

   - in the second part of language_update(), why would $GDM_LANG not
be a valid locale? this does some rather expensive things like
locale -a and grep and iterating over all available locales. So far
we trusted that $GDM_LANG was the format of a locale name, and also
a valid locale (gdm already tests that); under that assumption,
  couldn't we simply set $LC_MESSAGES to $GDM_LANG?

I think that the reason why there is a need to ensure that LC_MESSAGES
is assigned a valid locale is that ~/.dmrc and /var/cache/gdm/$USER/dmrc
are now updated when LANGUAGE is set.

That's the part I don't understand. The format of LANG and LC_MESSAGES
is the same -- a valid locale string. There shouldn't ever be a change
which sets Language= in .dmrc to a non-locale string (cf.
compatibility to older gdm and other *dm); is there?

Hence $GDM_LANG (or $GDM_LANGUAGE) may well be just 'en.utf8',
'sv.utf8' or 'de.utf8', none of which is a valid locale (at least
 not on my box).

Right, but I think $GDM_LANG assuming these values is a bug in the
first place.

As regards efficiency (expensive things), please note that the
language_update() function is called only when the user changes the
 language from the GDM greeter.

Thanks, noted. I agree that we can add some computational overhead
just for this case.

   - in the new_language check at the bottom, I think we should
  additionally check that $GDM_LANG != $LANG [...]
 [...]
If s/he picks German (Germany) from the GDM greeter, i.e. changes the
language from English to German, $GDM_LANG/$GDM_LANGUAGE would equal
$LANG. But now, when we complete the separation of LANG from the
translation language, that has nothing to do with it any longer, has it?

Of course, you are right. So let's forget this.

I'd like to raise a couple of Kubuntu related questions.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the KDE bits; it's worth
speaking to the kubuntu-dev folks about it. However, I think as a
first step we should make these changes to /etc/gdm/Xsession first and
see how it goes out in the field. Then we can see how to apply these
to kdm and whether there's something to factor out. WDYT?

[Bug 659318] Re: gthumb crashes upon opening a folder with a .comments subfolder

2010-11-29 Thread ADFH
To test further, I took the attached XML file from this report and
replaced an XML file I created by adding a comment through gthumb.
gthumb segfaulted again.

I removed the XML file from the folder (leaving other XML files in
place) and gthumb did not crash.

It therefore does seem that certain XML file contents will cause
segfaults. An app shouldn't crash because a file contains unexpected
data.

Re: [Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-11-29 Thread Martin Pitt
Gunnar Hjalmarsson [2010-11-29 13:52 -]:
During our talk in #ubuntu-desktop last friday, you mentioned the
possibility to drop ~/.profile for storing the user language environment
 and use /var/cache/gdm/$USER/dmrc instead.

Note that this was just a strawman idea, I haven't looked into this
at all. We can also keep this separate from this initial change, in
order to avoid putting too many changes into one step.

I think that may be a practicable approach with the advantage that
there is a safe method in place for writing to disk. I added the
keys Langlist and LCMess to dmrc and rewrote
 language-environment.sh (attached).

It's an interesting idea indeed. I brought this up in the context of
language-selector, to avoid having to parse/change ~/.profile there.
Back then I didn't actually think about the gdm integration, but if it
can be done in gdm itself, so much the better.

This needs to be tested with other window managers, though, that they
don't stumble over these new fields.

You mentioned that the Language value in dmrc must represent a valid
 locale because of other *dms

.. and also for backwards compatibility with older gdm. Imagine shared
home directories on a network, which folks access from Lucid and Natty
boxes.

, but I fear a problem there and don't quite follow you. Aren't we
working with the Ubuntu model for locale environment irrespective of
 the desktop GUI?

It would be nice, but since $GDM_LANG is specific to gdm, this won't
automatically apply to kdm, lxdm, and others.

[Bug 244433] Re: Cannot create a shortcut to an ftp site

2010-11-29 Thread Louis
I've found a way on how to get around this bug.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.

1. Log into a ftp-server in Nautilus.
2. Drag a folder on the ftp-server to the top (or bottom panel).
3. Right click on the newly created shortcut and choose Preferences.
4. Change the place from ftp://example.org/folder; to ftp://example.org; or
another sub-directory and click Close.
5. If you want to can drag the shortcut to the desktop or the left panel in
Nautilus. It's up to you.

I hope that was useful.

[Bug 682752] [NEW] dvi with .eps - either crashes (on startup) or images aren't displayed

2010-11-29 Thread Andreas Allacher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

It actuallyi quite random when a dvi file (I guess it only happens with
included .eps images) crashes at startup or it starts but the images
aren't displayed.

When it crashes at startup I either just get:
fatal internal error -100Segmentation fault

or quite a long list of files and also fatal internal error -100 but
Aborted instead of Segmentation fault

Or in the best case scenario evince starts up but the images aren't displayed.
In the terminal window I then see:
Error rendering PS document file.eps: render error
also with the fatal error -100

It just doesn't crash but in most of the cases it crashes...

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-11-29 Thread Philip Guyton
I have just come across this problem again with another machine (my
previous post #107 was concerning a Compaq Presario A900 (bios f.33) )

This time it is with an HP Pavilion dv8000.
again whilst on battery:-
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/current_now
0
so no drain info available so this time I installed Andy Eyre's libupower-glib1
and upower from Brian Rogers hand ppa and the system now has working estimates
of discharge and charge.

Thanks Andy and Brian.

[Bug 558872] Re: empathy accounts fail to connect after manually unlocking keyring

2010-11-29 Thread Erik Zoltan
I have been struggling with this bug in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick (64 bit).

I tried the following and it solved the problem. I went into System /
Preferences / Passwords and Encryption Keys. I expanded the Passwords:
login key and I clicked on the keys that were causing problems (in my
case, anything related to Facebook and Identi.ca) that I couldn't
connect to with Empathy. I pressed Delete on each one, to delete it.

When I rebooted, I had to go back into Empathy and tell it the passwords
that it should use to connect to those accounts for which I had removed
the password from the Passwords and Encryption Keys dialog.

Rebooting again, it now prompts me for my keyring password just one
time. When I specify it correctly, it connects to my accounts in
Empathy and sets my status to Available.

I hope this simple procedure works of others too. If so, then the
developers should be able to use this information to narrow down exactly
what's going wrong.

Thanks,
Erik
