[Bug 776781] Re: Nautilus is EXTREMELY SLOW after fresh install
I encountered the same issue on my older Sony Vaio VGNFS195VP after a fresh installation of Natty Narwhal. For everything I want do on the Desktop, nautilus pushes the CPU of my laptop to 100% for about 3-5 seconds and stalls the whole system (see picture with system monitor). Only after these 3-5 seconds of nautilus thinking I can perform the task I wanted to to, be it simply renaming an icon, drawing a selection over some icons, or even moving a single icon around. This is very painfull! I am not able to help any further, but maybe it is just a matter of my old laptops low ressources (Intel Pentium M with 1.60 Mhz, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6200 Go with 128 MB RAM). Or has it something to do with the transition from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3? By the way, this issue happens either with Unity, Unity-2D or the classic environment and with either the Nvidia driver, the Nouveau 3D accelleration or nothing of them installed. I hope you can fix this issue for the next release ... ** Attachment added: laggy_nautilus.png https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/776781/+attachment/2160214/+files/laggy_nautilus.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/776781 Title: Nautilus is EXTREMELY SLOW after fresh install -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 794395] [NEW] Mouse won't respond in a certain area of the screen.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince DivinityX have reported a bug on Ubuntufourms (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1621056) I have a problem where my mouse will not respond in an invisible box in the middle of my screen. Not only clicking, but right-click and the scroll wheel won't work while the mouse is hovering over the box. However, if I click and drag, and my mouse goes over the box while dragging, it doesn't hinder it at all, and will operate like normal until I let go of the mouse. I'm running UBUNTU 10.04 on a Dell XPS M1530. I have the very same problem with 11.04. Just appeared after I've upgraded from 10.10. There is a one inch thick horizontal area (line) at a bit lower than the middle of the screen, where the mouse does not respond to clicking or scroll-wheel. I can not click for eg. a link in this area unless I move (scroll) the page up or downwards and remove the link from this invisible area. It happens with firefox, libreoffice, desktop, everywhere. [Bug 616966] [NEW] gtk application window resizes bigger that screen makes useless
You have been subscribed to a public bug: GTK has a feature to resize the window so it fits the content. This is usually a good feature, but in case the content is bigger than the screen the window jumps back and forth by just left clicking. The only way to exit a such program is to press Alt+F4; the mouse can't be used. (Left clicking the close button makes the window jump.) The application QtOctave is one example. On a screen of 1024x600 (netbook), this application can't be used. See Screenshots. I only press left mouse button between the images. If I press twice I get the same position of the window again. You have been subscribed to a public bug: When I installed a program, that is supposed to be launched at startup, by building it from source using prefix=/usr/local, its .desktop file ended up in /usr/local/etc/xdg/autostart, which seems correct as far as I can tell. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. [Bug 783612] Re: Nautilus shows wrong file name in copy/move dialog
Hi, I'm unable to confirm this bug in Natty with the latest updates applied, because it seems to me the behavior has changed. These are the steps I took: 1.) Create a directory called 'test' 2.) Copy (by clicking and dragging while holding down Ctrl) a large file (in my case oneiric-desktop-i386.iso) to the directory 'test' 3.) Wait for oneiric-desktop-i386.iso to transfer over 4.) Select the copy of oneiric-desktop-i386.iso that isn't in 'test' and one other file (in my case ubuntu-11.04-server-amd64.iso) and copy by Ctrl+dragging them to 'test' 5.) Observe the 'File Conflict' dialog. This has correct info IMO (Replace 'oneiric-desktop-i386.iso'? and then gives the size of oneiric-desktop-i386.iso) 6.) Click the 'Skip' button 7.) Observe the file copy dialog. It says 'copying 2 files' and gives the progress in terms of the size of both files. It should only say it's copying 1 file and give the size of it, as the other file has been skipped. Can you please check this behavior again with the latest updates applied and see if we get the same thing? --- Ubuntu Bug Squad volunteer triager http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783612 Title: Nautilus shows wrong file name in copy/move dialog -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

according to upstream (debian): The problem here is due to the fact we have changed python helper (pysupport to dh_python2) and that all the packages that share the same namespace MUST use the same. Re: [Compiz] [Bug 767095] Re: 1 pixel icons in notification-area-applet when compiz is the windows manager
On Tue, Jun 7, 2011 at 7:17 AM, Omer P. 767...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: I appreciate your work, Sam. [rant] But I think there's a separate lesson to be learned here: When such a major overhaul as was done to compiz is undertaken, making it impossible for users to use the previous version (as was the case here, where natty users *could not* go back to 0.8.6, until Guiodic made his wonderful PPA) is just bad practice. Non-LTS releases are places where we land software that is coming out of upstreams and polish it for our users. Of course, I understand that there is a bar of stability that we aim to achieve, and of course, I understand that we've fallen short (way short, and this is my fault as the maintainer of compiz) of that bar, however that's not to say that progress must be made, hard decisions have to be taken etc. I'm not going to try to provide justification for why things were done the way they were during the N cycle. It was difficult for everyone, most notably because the entire stack was completely rewritten from the ground up. Providing packages for users to use during the 'classic' session of the 0.8.x release series of compiz is something that we could have done. However, I believe that the burden here far outweighs the benefits of switching to 0.9.x completely. Shipping packages for 0.8.x would mean that we'd have to distro-patch all of compiz 0.9 or 0.8 to provide separate binary names in the packages. It also breaks upgrade paths when users are upgrading and they need to maintain two sets of plugins for 0.8 and 0.9. Finally, when we want to remove compiz 0.8 from the system, there's no sane way in apt that we could replace it without introducing artificial conflicts. Additionally, I think that shipping the 0.8.x series would have had far more wide reaching effects than just having to put in the effort to maintain an outdated stack. First of all, like we saw with distributions that shipped KDE4 and KDE3 simultaneously, KDE4 was the victim of an immediate backlash and everyone reverted back to KDE3. The result of this is that KDE4 got hardly any end user testing and this seriously stifled the development of KDE, since the developers didn't know what users priorities were in the bug reports. Now even today, only now are people starting to get used to KDE again. But the fact that users were given an option to opt-out of that testing means that the KDE project was seriously crippled in being able to determine its priorities. I don't think that compiz 0.9.x would have matured so quickly in the same way that it did during the N cycle if we didn't receive the same amount of testing that we did. Being able to sift through all the bug reports showed us the actual usage patterns of normal users and allows the developers to address those problems. For example, I don't use any Qt apps which use the system tray (not a fan of skype) and I surefire would not have noticed this bug (which is a race condition in the way reparenting works in compiz) had users not tested it. The moral of the story here is that if we provide users the option to run away from the problems, then the discourse turns from solutions are created by the developers who fix the problems to solutions are created by users who work around the problems. I believe that the latter mindset is an incredibly dangerous one to have, since it encourages developers to stay in maintenance mode on old codebases, which eventually leads to more stagnant, rigid code which cannot be improved easily, which leads to increased fragility and increased burnout over time as developers are constrained in creating new solutions. Of course, I also recognize that forcing ordinary users to be the test ground for new software is also not a good mindset to have, since it increases complacency in users for what perfection we really should be striving for. As such, I believe we require a balance, and the solution to that problem is to invite more people in to learn the code, to fix it and to take ownership of it and give it a direction rather than either being fearful to make big leaps because we give users the option to run away or dropping bombs on users because we can. There are numerous other problems with the current version of compiz, numerous other reasons to want to stay at 0.8.6 for now (for example, the newer version crashes every window decorator except the unity- window-decorator, such as emerald, etc.) -- this is not a knock on compiz or its developers, of course; no software is free of bugs, and early in the lifecycle of every new major overhaul, there will be its share of problems. Not only that, but I imagine some of the compatibility issues (e.g. emerald) are just as likely to be bugs in the interfacing modules, rather than bugs in compiz. But the fact that someone had to hack a solution to enable users to downgrade is just poor usability. [/rant] -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz
[Bug 635366] [NEW] Screen brightness unstable on Asus1005P
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hi - I run Ubuntu 9.1 on a Asus 901 without any problems whatsoever. Everything works well. I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Asus 1005P in duel boot with Windows 7 Starter Ed. After some minor issue with the WiFi - which I was very impressed with the help received - could I trouble you guys for a little more assistance please. The screen brightness is unstable. Using the Fn+F5/F6 keys opens the brightness slider but this jumps from 'dim' to 'off' to 'bright' to dim to bright to off to dim etc. When the screen dims due to the 'automatic dim if not used for a short period' setting, the screen goes off completely when the mouse is nudged - but this should bring the screen back on.
