[Bug 810907] Re: User Accounts applet is too basic and needs advanced settings
Thanks for the reply 1. Group management and groups membership That's a bug, a new added user should be part of the standard needed groups, we need to build a list of those (using what the old tools was doing would be a start) and change the standard and admin profiles to match what is needed 2. Support for profile ? similar bug, the admin profile should add users the right groups 3. Home directory we can discuss with upstream adding that option somewhere in the ui though it seems rather a non standard use to me 4. Shell there is a bug open about that I think, the default user shell should not be sh 5. User Id We should perhaps include user creation to deja-dup in some way if that's the usecase there, I'm Cc-ing mterry to the bug in case he has an opinion about that Well, it seems that your issues is mostly that the default profiles have not been adapted to use the right groups on Ubuntu added with some bugs, I think that having the profiles right would catch most of the normal use. It's likely that upstream will argue against adding extra features like the user id or the user directory to the options because they will see that as administrators features and the control-center is supposed to be a normal user configuration tool, not a detailled administration utility. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/810907 Title: User Accounts applet is too basic and needs advanced settings To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/810907/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 810907] Re: User Accounts applet is too basic and needs advanced settings
Also, the example of using groups to control device access is pretty much obsolete now, as this is mostly done using ACL's with udev- acl/consolekit, rather than using unix groups - I don't even think the fax group is used anymore (there is no udev rule which sets device nodes to that group name) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/810907 Title: User Accounts applet is too basic and needs advanced settings To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/810907/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Chris Coulson [2011-07-19 9:20 -]: Also, the example of using groups to control device access is pretty much obsolete now, as this is mostly done using ACL's with udev- acl/consolekit, rather than using unix groups - I don't even think the fax group is used anymore (there is no udev rule which sets device nodes to that group name) That's right. [Bug 812864] Re: Totem crashes once it has finished playing the last song on the playlist
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. it's very easy to tell udev this, but you have to do it manually; i do the same to tell it what format the card reader can read, you'd need some list of major/minor versions and what they are to do this automatically, at least that's the conclusion i came to when i tried to figure out how to automate it the key word here is udev though, that is where the properties are assigned -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/706436 Title: Safely remove drive is not safe for SD card readers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/706436/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [no simulation mode] (Ubuntu 11.04)
Two laptops running natty. on the first I burned a small data disc containing a few low resolution jpegs. I used the cd/dvd creator folder and everything was fine. the media was a 52x, 700mb skc cdr. On the second laptop I attempted to burn 3 cctv videos, each onto its own disc- the same media. each disc would have contained one file. The smallest file was over 500mb. All three discs appeared to burn sucessfully but were unreadable like the prior authors' DVDs. Using tools like strings and dd to read /dev/sr0 shows that the cd does indeed start burning correctly but that the burn suddenly ends on about the 330th mb and brasero doesn't seem to care. Summary: - burning cuts short - no error message - might just be big discs or discs with big files (or mayyybe depend on the burner... i'm out of discs for now) - CDs are affected, not just DVDs Thanks everyone involved :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780117 Title: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [no simulation mode] (Ubuntu 11.04) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/780117/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 812394] Re: Disable suspend/hibernate options when they are not supported
Javier has asked me to comment on this. But my role here was only to specify how the policy should be presented in the power settings. John Lea proposed the policy and Mark Shuttleworth reviewed it. As John has explained it to me, the logic behind the new policy is this: 1. In Ubuntu, Suspend and Hibernate often don't work on new hardware models without software fixes. 2. The nature of Suspend/Hibernate bugs is that while (as Martin points out) they can be fixed for individual machines, the only feasible way to prevent them from occurring, again and again with new hardware models, is for hardware to be certified. 3. For Ubuntu to present a Suspend function that doesn't work is unprofessional, and presenting a Hibernate function that doesn't work (and destroys data by never waking up) is even worse. 4. It is feasible for Ubuntu to tell whether the hardware it is running on has been certified. 5. Requiring users to understand that Suspend and Hibernate might not work before turning them on is also bad, but not as bad. 6. Suspend and Hibernate do work on many hardware models that have not been certified. 7. From (1), (2), (3), and (4), Suspend and Hibernate should not be available by default for hardware that is not certified. 8. From (5), (6), and (7), Ubuntu should let people turn Suspend and Hibernate back on again. I can see various ways in which this policy could be shown to be unsound: * Show that (1) is false. For example, Martin says that Suspend works on the vast majority of machines. What percentage is that? Does anyone in the world know? * Show that (2) is false, e.g. XYZ new standard or technique means that Suspend and Hibernate will almost always work without certification. * Show that (3) is false or partly false, e.g. when Hibernate fails, N % of the time it fails before power off, so there's no data loss. * Show that (4) is false, e.g. millions of machines asking a server whether their hardware is certified wouldn't scale. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/812394 Title: Disable suspend/hibernate options when they are not supported To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/812394/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
