[Bug 692791] Re: Installing then removing evolution leaves unused packages behind

2012-03-02 Thread Torsten Spindler
I do think apt does the right thing. On Precise I did:

$ sudo apt-get install evolution
$ sudo apt-get purge evolution
$ sudo apt-get autoremove

Note that purge/remove will only remove the package and packages that
are directly dependent on it, e.g. evolution-plugins. Packages that have
been installed as a requirement for the soon to be removed package
(evolution) are marked auto and will get removed with 'autoremove' if no
dependent package on it is found.

I mark the bug invalid.

[Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine

2012-03-02 Thread Christian Giordano
@marc

1) As the time of the posting, sudo passwd username wasn't allowing that.
2) I would argue that it should be easier for the user to allow that.
3) What defines reasonable? Isn't a 6 letter word (ie. ubuntu) reasonable
enough? Web services, where password selection is way more critical, tells the
requirements for the password. They don't just say is too simple!.

[Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine

2012-03-02 Thread Christian Giordano
The problem of the password selection is that is not only used for
administration purposes (sudo) where a very safe environment is highly
recommended. But the password is often used simply to login in the
machine, also just after few minutes the user was away from it. In the
latter case, an increasing of typo errors would result in frustration
for the user. This of course would be different if login and sudo would
use different authentication systems (eg. login through gesture, like on
mobile).

While someone accessing your local machine might be able to access also
your web services, the number of people who can try to hack it is
infinitely smaller.

The user should be discouraged of using very simple passwords but not
forbidden, especially if the password has a fair amount of letters.

Is your computer password as complex as the one of your gmail account?

[Bug 944673] [NEW] Appplication Menu Integration option that was in the deisgns for 12.04 are missing

2012-03-02 Thread Mark East
Public bug reported:

The Application Menu Integration option mentioned in the designs here
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ILTJDiDCd25Npt2AmgzF8aOnZZECxTfM0hvsbWT2BxA/edit?hl=en_GB
on Page 8 have not appeared in my settings yet and I know quite a few
people that are waiting for this functionality. This better suits power
users (and those migrating from Windows) as it allows people to use
Focus Follows Mouse and means a faster interface as users do not need to
travel to the top of the screen to access the menu every time. I
understand it's consistent having the menu at the top and that should
stay as the default but the option to turn it off is quite important to
a lot of people and I think missing this from 12.04 would be a mistake.
I know the UI has gone into a freeze now but it is in the designs which
have also been frozen so is it likely to make an appearance soon? If not
then I would be interested to know why it has been dropped.

Cheers,
Mark

[Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine

2012-03-02 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Gmail doesn't allow new passwords shorter than eight characters. So that
comparison doesn't support relaxing the password requirements for
Ubuntu.

A better comparison would be smartphones and tablets,
- iOS allows a simple passcode of exactly 4 digits, or a complex passcode of
any length. (Even one character!)
- Android 3.2 allows a PIN of 4 or more digits, or a password of 4 or more
characters.
- The PlayBook allows a PIN of 4 or more digits.

At this point, there's little difference between the typical importance
of data stored on a smartphone and the typical importance of data stored
on a PC. So it would be unreasonable to require a more complex password
on someone's PC than they already use on their phone. (For one thing,
they may be more likely to use a password on their PC *at all* if they
can remember that it's the same PIN they use on their phone.)

The problem here, though, is that the same Ubuntu OS is used on servers.
The data stored on a server is often hugely more important than the data
stored on an individual's PC or phone. And it's much easier to try
cracking a password on a server than on a PC. (If someone has enough
physical access to your PC to try hundreds of password guesses, they
might as well just restart into a live CD and steal all your data that
way instead.) So a 4-digit PIN for someone logging in to an Ubuntu
server would be ridiculous.

So I think that sooner or later, we will need to stop taking a one-size-
fits-all approach. We should have stringent requirements for a new
Ubuntu password when it is being used as a server (or when remote login
is allowed). But when it is not, we should warn about weak passwords but
allow them.

2012-03-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 911125] Re: FTBFS due to removed g_thread_init

2012-03-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gtk-sharp2 - 2.12.10-2ubuntu3

---
gtk-sharp2 (2.12.10-2ubuntu3) precise; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/04_fix_glib_2.31_threading.dpatch:
+ GLib 2.31 always has threading support, always initialises it, and has
dropped some deprecated functions. Update glibsharpglue and
Thread.cs to match. Fixes FTBFS (LP: #911125, LP: #935518)
  * debian/control:
+ Add versioned dependency on glib 2.31 to libglib2.0-cil, as we depend
on the threading behaviour of those GLibs.
  * debian/control:
  * debian/rules:
+ Add dh_autoreconf to update build system for patch
  * debian/patches/99_ltmain_as_needed:
+ Drop; dh_autoreconf does this better

[Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine

2012-03-02 Thread Christian Giordano
@mpt, in one thing I don't agree. There is a big difference between a
phone and a PC. The phone is, almost, always with you. That's why people
don't mind much showing the unlock code to their friends.

I am not an Android user but I noticed many people using this gestural
based unlock. This could be another way to clearly differentiate login
from admin authentication.

Tablet (the middle device) makes all this more interesting :)

[Bug 942834] Re: Should gvfs-dbg depend on gvfs-fuse?

2012-03-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, I guess you meant gvfs rather than -dbg
(the debug symbols)? No, that's not a good idea, gvfs-fuse is an issue
on some system and not strictly needed, we do install it by default but
let users free to uninstall it. Note that you don't need fuse to access
smb shares, gvfsd-smb (the samba backend) is used for those and that one
is installed with gvfs

[Bug 632341] Re: Num Lock is not activated by default at GDM

2012-03-02 Thread V V Dyck
Still a problem with 11.10 release.
Still a package to install and a(nother) config file to edit.
Still not new user friendly.
Still a boring moment to do it.

Choosing if numlock is on or off at startup is not important. Many want it and
many others doesn't want it.
What's important is to have the choice to choose between on and off. Actually
you don't have the choice out of the box.
I'm sure having numlockx installed + a toggle button in some keyboard
configuration panel could be enough for many.

[Bug 944814] [NEW] Unexpected zoom while scrolling up/down using my touchpad on pdf viewer evince

2012-03-02 Thread Victor Pallier
Public bug reported:

When I use evince to read a pdf file, an unexpected freeze (1-2 seconds) and
then a zoom change occur when I sroll up/down.
It only occurs when I use the two finger scrolling option on my touchpad.

I should add that my touchpad was not well supported on ubuntu (ALPS
touchpad) before I installed the package available here :
http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/alps-touchpad/psmouse-alps-0.10
/psmouse-alps-dkms_0.10_all.deb

I am using the default evince package on ubuntu 11.10.

To re-produce :
* enable two finger scrolling
* open a pdf file with evince
* scroll down and/or up severall times using the two-finger scrolling, the bug
should occur.

[Bug 827049] Re: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus

2012-03-02 Thread Rocko
I tried this on my VM, and no errors are printed when I try to add a
bookmark, either with drag and drop or via the menu. And the perms on
that file are:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 rocko rocko 128 Mar 2 07:35 .gtk-bookmarks

I do get an error when starting nautilus, but it looks like an unrelated
samba issue:

Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
Nautilus-Share-Message: Called net usershare info but it failed: 'net
usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory
/var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

I also upgraded my main machine to precise, ie with a user account that already
has bookmarks, and bookmarks work correctly. But when I try a new user where no
bookmarks are defined, I can't add the first bookmark. So the problem seems to
be when adding the first bookmark.

testing precise. Firefox made the entire system go into a crawl multiple

[Bug 320581] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal

2012-03-02 Thread i1abnrk
I have this problem constantly. I agree this seems to be triggered most
often by pulseaudio. I'm using an epa kernel mod for Oneiric which sets
a nice value of -12 for pulse (I've used it since. The most common way
to trigger the crash is when an internet ad on a website like yahoo
tries to push audio through firefox while I'm listening to music with
any music player. Firefox works fine but pa sometimes stutters in
threadbuffering and the desktop crashes behind firefox (memlock?) and
icons and sometimes even characters become corrupted. It seems there is
a ruthless thread in buffer overrun. Also happens frequently when a
second user logs in to the same Ubuntu box. Perhaps there's a bug in
thread cloning between pa and gvfs? Bad header info in the
XXXThread.clone of one or both? I'm not a thread expert but these are
issues worthy of someone more familiar with the specific projects I
suppose.

[Bug 517021] Re: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage

2012-03-02 Thread Manuel Iglesias Alonso
Bless you Mucku!
My disk is not full but I started to get kernel error messages whenever I
browsed with nautilus (Not with Thunar) one particular disk partition (1.8TB)
and moving a tiny file from a directory to another would take ages.
Removing ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata solved the problem! :-D
This bug deserves a fix by the gvfs developers.

Thank you again!

[Bug 827049] Re: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus

2012-03-02 Thread Rocko
@Sebastien: When you tried adding a bookmark in a guest session, did
nautilus already display a Bookmarks section on the left side? Where did
you drag the bookmark to? I only see 'Computer' and 'Network' sections
on the left. Dragging to the entries in 'Computer' just tries to move
the folder I'm dragging to the folder I drop it in, eg if I drop it in
'Rubbish Bin' it goes the to the trash. Dragging it to 'Browse Network'
says 'There was an error created the folder X'. Dragging it to an
unmarked section (ie just blank space on the left tab) doesn't do
anything at all.

Does pressing Ctrl-D add a bookmark? For me it doesn't do anything
anywhere, even in the login where I have already-existing bookmarks, ie
where I can otherwise add and remove bookmarks normally.

[Bug 944903] [NEW] Screen and keyboard brightness reset to maximum on reboot/logout

2012-03-02 Thread Seth Forshee
Public bug reported:

On the MacBook Air 4,1 I keep seeing the keyboard and screen backlights
getting reset to maximum brightness. For the keyboard backlight it
happens every time I log out and return to the display manager login
screen. For the screen backlight it only happens after booting, but
oddly enough it doesn't jump to maximum brightness until the display
manager starts.

[Bug 827049] Re: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus

2012-03-02 Thread Rocko
Here's a screen video showing me trying unsuccessfully to add a bookmark
via drag'n'drop and also via the bookmark menu.

Note that in the (other) user account where I already have a bookmarks
section and where adding bookmarks works, I get a horizontal black line
displayed in the left-hand section when I drag a folder over it. The
line moves between other bookmarks as feedback to indicate where the
bookmark will be added when I release the button. There is no such line
displayed here.

This machine in the video is one that I created in VirtualBox by
installing from scratch.

(I know that in the video nautilus is displaying 'Rubbish Bin' as its
title, but that a separate bug, since I'm clearly working in the home
folder, and because this bug happens even if nautilus is displaying
'Home Folder' as its title.)

[Bug 944949] [NEW] gnome-terminal crashes silently when i switch to another program

2012-03-02 Thread Johan Thorén
Public bug reported:

I launch gnome-terminal via the unity icon that I have created. I then
switch focus to for example Chromium and the gnome-terminal window is
closed without me closing it.

I also noticed that even when I still have the gnome-terminal window
active, it does not show in the application switcher from alt+tab.

The same problem occurs both when I launch a command in the terminal
prior to changing focus, as well as when I don't.

ProblemType: Bug
