[Bug 692791] Re: Installing then removing evolution leaves unused packages behind
I do think apt does the right thing. On Precise I did: $ sudo apt-get install evolution $ sudo apt-get purge evolution $ sudo apt-get autoremove Note that purge/remove will only remove the package and packages that are directly dependent on it, e.g. evolution-plugins. Packages that have been installed as a requirement for the soon to be removed package (evolution) are marked auto and will get removed with 'autoremove' if no dependent package on it is found. [Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine
The problem of the password selection is that is not only used for administration purposes (sudo) where a very safe environment is highly recommended. But the password is often used simply to login in the machine, also just after few minutes the user was away from it. In the latter case, an increasing of typo errors would result in frustration for the user. This of course would be different if login and sudo would use different authentication systems (eg. login through gesture, like on mobile). While someone accessing your local machine might be able to access also your web services, the number of people who can try to hack it is infinitely smaller. The user should be discouraged of using very simple passwords but not forbidden, especially if the password has a fair amount of letters. [Bug 944673] [NEW] Appplication Menu Integration option that was in the deisgns for 12.04 are missing
Public bug reported: The Application Menu Integration option mentioned in the designs here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ILTJDiDCd25Npt2AmgzF8aOnZZECxTfM0hvsbWT2BxA/edit?hl=en_GB on Page 8 have not appeared in my settings yet and I know quite a few people that are waiting for this functionality. This better suits power users (and those migrating from Windows) as it allows people to use Focus Follows Mouse and means a faster interface as users do not need to travel to the top of the screen to access the menu every time. I understand it's consistent having the menu at the top and that should stay as the default but the option to turn it off is quite important to a lot of people and I think missing this from 12.04 would be a mistake. I know the UI has gone into a freeze now but it is in the designs which have also been frozen so is it likely to make an appearance soon? If not then I would be interested to know why it has been dropped. [Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine
Gmail doesn't allow new passwords shorter than eight characters. So that comparison doesn't support relaxing the password requirements for Ubuntu. A better comparison would be smartphones and tablets, - iOS allows a simple passcode of exactly 4 digits, or a complex passcode of any length. (Even one character!) - Android 3.2 allows a PIN of 4 or more digits, or a password of 4 or more characters. - The PlayBook allows a PIN of 4 or more digits. At this point, there's little difference between the typical importance of data stored on a smartphone and the typical importance of data stored on a PC. So it would be unreasonable to require a more complex password on someone's PC than they already use on their phone. (For one thing, they may be more likely to use a password on their PC *at all* if they can remember that it's the same PIN they use on their phone.) The problem here, though, is that the same Ubuntu OS is used on servers. The data stored on a server is often hugely more important than the data stored on an individual's PC or phone. And it's much easier to try cracking a password on a server than on a PC. (If someone has enough physical access to your PC to try hundreds of password guesses, they might as well just restart into a live CD and steal all your data that way instead.) So a 4-digit PIN for someone logging in to an Ubuntu server would be ridiculous. So I think that sooner or later, we will need to stop taking a one-size- fits-all approach. We should have stringent requirements for a new Ubuntu password when it is being used as a server (or when remote login is allowed). But when it is not, we should warn about weak passwords but allow them. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/939595 Title: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/939595/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thank you for your bug report, I guess you meant gvfs rather than -dbg (the debug symbols)? [Bug 632341] Re: Num Lock is not activated by default at GDM
Still a problem with 11.10 release. Still a package to install and a(nother) config file to edit. Still not new user friendly. Still a boring moment to do it. Choosing if numlock is on or off at startup is not important. Many want it and many others doesn't want it. What's important is to have the choice to choose between on and off. Actually you don't have the choice out of the box. [Bug 320581] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal
I have this problem constantly. I agree this seems to be triggered most often by pulseaudio. I'm using an epa kernel mod for Oneiric which sets a nice value of -12 for pulse (I've used it since. The most common way to trigger the crash is when an internet ad on a website like yahoo tries to push audio through firefox while I'm listening to music with any music player. Firefox works fine but pa sometimes stutters in threadbuffering and the desktop crashes behind firefox (memlock?) and icons and sometimes even characters become corrupted. It seems there is a ruthless thread in buffer overrun. Also happens frequently when a second user logs in to the same Ubuntu box. Perhaps there's a bug in thread cloning between pa and gvfs? Bad header info in the XXXThread.clone of one or both? I'm not a thread expert but these are issues worthy of someone more familiar with the specific projects I suppose. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/320581 Title: gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gvfs/+bug/320581/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 827049] Re: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus
@Sebastien: When you tried adding a bookmark in a guest session, did nautilus already display a Bookmarks section on the left side? Where did you drag the bookmark to? I only see 'Computer' and 'Network' sections on the left. Dragging to the entries in 'Computer' just tries to move the folder I'm dragging to the folder I drop it in, eg if I drop it in 'Rubbish Bin' it goes the to the trash. Dragging it to 'Browse Network' says 'There was an error created the folder X'. Dragging it to an unmarked section (ie just blank space on the left tab) doesn't do anything at all. Does pressing Ctrl-D add a bookmark? For me it doesn't do anything anywhere, even in the login where I have already-existing bookmarks, ie where I can otherwise add and remove bookmarks normally. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/827049 Title: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/827049/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 827049] Re: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus
Here's a screen video showing me trying unsuccessfully to add a bookmark via drag'n'drop and also via the bookmark menu. Note that in the (other) user account where I already have a bookmarks section and where adding bookmarks works, I get a horizontal black line displayed in the left-hand section when I drag a folder over it. The line moves between other bookmarks as feedback to indicate where the bookmark will be added when I release the button. There is no such line displayed here. This machine in the video is one that I created in VirtualBox by installing from scratch. (I know that in the video nautilus is displaying 'Rubbish Bin' as its title, but that a separate bug, since I'm clearly working in the home folder, and because this bug happens even if nautilus is displaying 'Home Folder' as its title.) ** Attachment added: trying-to-add-bookmark.ogv https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/827049/+attachment/2801538/+files/trying-to-add-bookmark.ogv -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/827049 Title: add bookmark is broken in oneiric's nautilus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/827049/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 944949] [NEW] gnome-terminal crashes silently when i switch to another program
Public bug reported: I launch gnome-terminal via the unity icon that I have created. I then switch focus to for example Chromium and the gnome-terminal window is closed without me closing it. I also noticed that even when I still have the gnome-terminal window active, it does not show in the application switcher from alt+tab. The same problem occurs both when I launch a command in the terminal prior to changing focus, as well as when I don't.
