Re: [Bug 1079953] Re: Main Menu Editor alacarte is Completely Broken in xubuntu 12.10
The menu specification, which Unity follows, existed since long before Unity was in the planning stages. Furthermore, the Main Menu application used to edit menus is currently maintained by me, and I am not a Canonical employee. They do not pay me any money, and I have no power over Canonical's choices. The bug here, about not working in Xubuntu, is a combination of two issues: one is that the application did not respect the $XDG_MENU_PREFIX environment, and the other is that due to legacy code, the application depended on a binary installed as part of gnome-panel, so the desktop file editor didn't work. Both have now been fixed. I do not know of Xubuntu's update schedule, but a new unstable release that fixes the issue is out, and the stable release will be part of GNOME 3.8. You can find it here: ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/alacarte/3.7/ If you have other suggestions on how to improve the usability of the menu editor application, please let me know, and I'll try to take your suggestions into account. The 'Main Menu' editor (alacarte) is completely broken in xubuntu 12.10. Changes in the xubuntu Applications Menu made with alacarte are not effected. For example: -- Ticking/unticking boxes in alacarte does not stick. -- New menu items created with alacarte are not put in place. -- Menu items deleted with alacarte remain in place. -- Moving items from one menu folder to another with alacarte no longer works. -- .desktop files of any menu item opened (with or without (!) change) in alacarte simply accumulate in /home/[user]/.local/share/applications, without further effect. -- sudo alacarte in a terminal no longer works. It appears that alacarte is dependent on an item (gnome-desktop-item- edit) provided by the gnome-panel package which is not not compiled with alacarte and which is not otherwise installed under xubuntu. (See also Launchpad Bug #656735 -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/656735). However, the full gnome-panel is an alien package under xfce, and it should not be installed under xubuntu as it pulls in a mass of redundant and undesirable non-xfce gnome desktop functionality. (Note: exo-utils for xfce, which provides exo-desktop-item-edit, IS fully installed but this does not resolve the above bugs.) Apart from these bugs, alacarte has limited functionality, it is prone to crashing, and it is awkward to handle. Many of these problems have a very long history and are never properly addressed. It seems better if the alacarte Applications Menu Editor in xubuntu would be replaced as standard (or at least as an option through the (x)ubuntu repos) by LXMenuEditor (http://lxmed.sourceforge.net/). [Bug 640845] Re: accented characters of CM fonts not available to inkscape
Alex Valavanis wrote on 2010-09-17: I'm not too familiar with how font rendering is actually performed. Can anyone help? Don't know how typesetting of the accented characters is done in LaTeX, but wrt to Inkscape: if a certain font does not contain the specific Unicode symbol / character, the font backend substitutes it from a different (fallback) font (if available) - the reporter should probably first verify whether the TTF files of the mentioned fonts actually contain those Unicode glyphs. An quick way to test is to use gtk-demo, and preview the same words with 'Pickers Fonts' (see attached screenshot with GTK+/X11 2.24.13, fontconfig 2.9.0, freetype 2.4.10, pango 1.30.1, and the cmr10 font downloaded from [1]). Fontforge can also be used to view the list of available glyphs of a font - it doesn't show any accented characters either for e.g. the TTF font cmr10. Likely the ComputerModern Unicode fonts [2] could be used as an alternative (they do include lots of accented characters). [Bug 1142993] Re: Desktop Organize
Hi Eran, thanks for your bug report. You asked for the Gnome bug tracker, and it is located at: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/. [Bug 1143538] [NEW] FLAC playback cuts short
Public bug reported: When playing certain files, playback abruptly and prematurely ceases at a position apparently specific to the file. This appears to be an issue with playback of only a small portion of the song; if I use a player capable of seeking and seek to past the point of failure, playback continues normally. I initially noticed this problem with Quot Libet, but can consistently reproduce it in Totem so I'm led to believe it's GStreamer that has the problem, and not the consuming application. Neither of the aforementioned applications present any errors (to stderr, internal error log, or as a popup message) when encountering the issue, and simply continue to the next song in the playlist. Additionally, `flac -t $file` does not report any issues with affected files, and both `flac -dc $file | aplay` and `ffplay $file` correctly play affected files, proving that the issue exists with GStreamer, and not the file itself (or at least, proving that GStreamer behaves in a far less fault-tolerant manner than other options). An example file, available at https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwkONbGn86mBXzRTRDZtZkI0Y0E/edit?usp=sharing, dies about 0:03 in, so you don't have to wait very long to experience it. This bug is a cross-post from the upstream bug #695044, visible at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=695044. The official 0.10 maintainer has confirmed the issue, but wants nothing to do with it, which is unfortunate, given that it affects all applications using 0.10, and given the ABI/API differences between 0.10 and 1.0, its solution is not a simple “recompile the application to use 1.0”. ** Affects: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gstreamer0.10 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1143538 Title: FLAC playback cuts short To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gstreamer0.10/+bug/1143538/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
