[Bug 1163155] [NEW] keep the 3 or 5 youngest linux-image-*-generic and autoremove the rest

2013-04-02 Thread Exsudat
Public bug reported:

Keep a configurable number (per default maybe 3) of the youngest installed
generic kernel images.
Onlye the generic ones! Selfbuild kernels are not affected of that.

Ubuntu-Systems running very long without reinstallation. After some
years of updating there are a lot of old kernel-images installed but
never used. It is a lot of space for mobile devices like netbooks,
laptops or smaller.

It can be realize (like feudora does) with a meta-package like kernel-lates
which is assoziated with the last/youngest 3 kernels.

All older one would be autoremoved.

Of course there could be selected another solution to make it easier to
configure if someone need to keep all old kernels.

[Bug 1163151] [NEW] 13.04 Update HANGs

2013-04-02 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

 D07-1304 3.8.0-15-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 27 19:19:30 UTC 2013

1. Atempt to install upgrades.
2. Hang trying to install 3.8.0-16 following an install of the 2013-04_01 daily
build.

Had the same symptoms trying to upgrade from 3.8.0-14 to 3.8.0-15
IN both cases, the error gathering process reports this as known bug but points
to a bug that does not seem at all related.
This last process happens IF Chrome has been installed and is the default
browser.
If FireFox is the default it just hangs. FireFox on Ubuntu functions so poorly
that it must have come from Redmond!

[Bug 562476] Re: x-www-browser, sensible-browser and gnome-www-browser don't use the default browser

2013-04-02 Thread MestreLion
@Thibault: xdg-open, for sure, and for 2 main reasons:

- xdg-open is more portable: it chooses the most appropriate open
command for your system, be it Gnome, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, etc, while gnome-
open works only in gnome. In fact, in Gnome systems xdg-open used to end
up calling gnome-open. So let it choose the suitable opener for you.

- gnome-open is deprecated, and was replaced by gvfs-open. A quick
googling reveals https://live.gnome.org/LibgnomeMustDie , and also
https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/15556 offers some insight. xdg-open
was updated a long time ago to use gvfs-open if it was available, and
fallback to gnome-open for (really) old systems

Worth note that gvfs-open (and thereby xdg-open too) uses the xdg mime
database system to choose an application based on mime-type handlers,
which is the system used by Preferred Applications, so it respects the
*user* preferences.

[Bug 796076] Re: When run as root [gksudo gedit whatever] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1'

2013-04-02 Thread samuel
I have a workaround for those LTS users like me who haven't got the fixed
gedit. As stated if gksudo gksudo gedit is run, it doesn't create the empty
document. Therefore, adding this:
gksudo()
{
if [ $1 = gedit ]
then
shift
gksudo gksudo gedit $@
else
command gksudo $@
fi
}
to your .bashrc will fix it. For those who don't know bash, it's a function
that will be called when the user types gksudo. If the second argument is
gedit, then it shifts the argument array, to drop off the first, and then
passes the argument array to gksudo gksudo gedit. (This makes sure that if the
users specifies a file to open it will get opened). Otherwise it just runs
gksudo for us.

[Bug 1069757]

2013-04-02 Thread Sbergman
(In reply to comment #36)
I just posted that I was still experiencing this bug, when using 4.0.2 RC2
(as downloaded from the Pre-Releases sections of libreoffice.org).

Testing again with a locally built copy from the git repo at tag
libreoffice-4.0.2.2 I find that load and save are in fact working.

 My build process was
 $ ./autogen.sh --disable-gnome-vfs --enable-gio
 $ make
 $ make dev-install -o build

I don't know what the difference between that and the released package would
be, but seems the code in git is OK.

The official, generic Linux builds at
http://www.libreoffice.org/download are built --enable-gnome-vfs
--disable-gio, which does make a difference here, as --enable-gnome-vfs
and --enable-gio provide alternate implementations for accessing remote
files.

[Bug 796076] Re: When run as root [gksudo gedit whatever] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1'

2013-04-02 Thread Paddy Landau
@samuel - Thanks for the function. Unfortunately, that only works from
the terminal; it doesn't work from Alt+F2.

For that reason, the simplest method is to create a new file (I call it
ggedit), place it in your path, and make it executable. The file
contains just one line:

gksudo gksudo gedit ${@}

Use ggedit (or whatever you call the script) instead of gksudo
gedit, and this will work from Alt+F2, the terminal, or anywhere else.

[Bug 1163230] [NEW] alsamixer settings get lost at reboot, (alsaconf not present)

2013-04-02 Thread pratiwi
Public bug reported:

I expect the sound settings to be remembered on reboot. They get reset to
speaker muted and zero levels. I expect to be able to save the settings if this
isn't done automatically. (I expect all to work with google plus, my microphone
didn't. I expect to be able to install vlc sound player without problems. I
expect to be able to upgrade without problems.)

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/alsamixer-does-not-save-my-settings-136701/
many people seem to have this problem and after installing the utils I can't
find the alsaconf on my system.
The mixer settings get constantly reset to mute on speaker and sould at zero,
so each time I reboot I have to open a terminal and type alsamixer, then unmute
and set sound levels again. This bug caused endless problems as being new to
linux I was trying all sorts of sound mixer installs, then removing again, to
the novice user the sound simply stops working and there is no indication why
unless you eventually figure out how alsamixer works. The different screens in
the utility are confusing, then the key strokes are not at all obvious. You
need to redesign the interface to be more user friendly and to actually work
and save a good set of default settings. Then test on users who have never
encountered it before.

[Bug 1163237] [NEW] Using sudo to run nautilus with root permission to change the owner of a folder causes a crash

2013-04-02 Thread Haakon_Løtveit
Public bug reported:

I ran a window of nautilus using sudo, to get root permissions.
Then I tried to change the owner of a folder. (It was really an hdd mounted in
that folder if that matters.)

I set the owner to Haakon in the gui, and nautilus crashed.
Reopening nautilus to fix this resulted in more crashing, with the same error:
User \Haakon\ does not exist.
My real username would be haakon, and when going back and setting it manually
using chown, nautilus happily accepted it, and stopped choking on that folder.

[Bug 1162466] Re: GDM wont start on Ubuntu GNOME using Gnome3 ppa

2013-04-02 Thread Stinger
Additional info:
When I have the blue blinds background with a mouse courser ( plymouth ), I
tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 which brought up the command line.
Typed 'apport-collect 1162466' and was told to install python-apport, I did
with 'sudo apt-get install python-apport'.
Tried 'apport-collect 1162466' again and was told that 'the launchpadlib python
module is not installed'.
After a bit googling on my other pc, I did 'apt-get install
python-launchpadlib'.
Tried 'apport-collect 1162466' again and got through to launchpad, after a
while I was promted to accept the transfer of logfiles in my browser, geesh,
from the command line !

Therefore I attach my /var/log/apport.log and my
/var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.114.crash
Hope it is of value when troubleshooting :)

[Bug 952108] Re: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak

2013-04-02 Thread Sandigliano Gianni
More Infos:
I'm also on Precise and confirm this bug it's really annoying a lot!

In my case Nautilus regularly eats memory while simply copying files.
I've started to copy a large tree of small files two days ago in the morning
from an USB disk to another; the copy was the only process in a regular running
state. I came back home yesterday, 36 hours later, and nautilus copy was still
running using about 1/3 of my 8GB of precious RAM while copying at only 1MB/sec
against usual 10-15MB/sec; CPU usage was also very high, near 100% of the used
processor.
I stopped the process, rebooted and started to copy a smaller tree each time.
The memory leak was always in place for each tree I copied, increasing the
memory used as well as the charge on the CPU taking care of running the
process; these are collected steps:
- 1st tree (13.3GB,55k files): RAM 0.76%-1.94%(+1.18%), ~12MB/sec, ~5-6%CPU
- 2nd tree (8,5GB,30k files): RAM 1.95%-2.39%(+0.44%), ~10MB/sec, ~8-10% CPU
- 3rd tree (14,0GB,50k files): RAM 2.40%-3.52%(+1.12%), ~9MB/sec, ~11-15%CPU
- 4th tree (13,6GB,48k files): RAM 3.53%-4.55%(+1.02%), ~8MB/sec, ~14-20%CPU
- 5th tree (20,9GB,105k files): RAM 4.56%-6.69%(+2.13%), ~7MB/sec, ~17-25%CPU
- 6th tree (28,8GB,146k files): RAM 6,70%-9,86%(+2.16%), ~6MB/sec, ~20-30%CPU
The memory leak seems loosely coupled to the number of copied files, maybe to
the total length of the filenames managed?
The higher CPU usage seems simply related to the waste of RAM memory.
When the copy was completed nautilus CPU usage went down to 0.17% while RAM
usage remained 9.86%.

It could be interesting I'm using:
- Dropbox
- Desktop Background Image changing (Webilder)
but changing in RAM/CPU usage did not seem at all related to these processes.

[Bug 1163287] [NEW] file browser should remove files using delete, not ctrl+delete

[Bug 1163323] [NEW] Ubuntu 15px T rendered as bold S

2013-04-02 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10

On one particular machine running Ubuntu 12.10, almost every normal-
weight T in Ubuntu 15px at normal weight is rendered as a bold S.
For example, Text is rendered as Sext.

The problem does not occur with any other font, size, weight, or
character. Only the T in Ubuntu 15px at normal weight.

This problem occurs in multiple applications, including Thunderbird,
Tomboy, XChat, and Nautilus. It does not occur in LibreOffice (perhaps
because it does not use GTK?), or in Ubuntu's menu bar (perhaps because
it applies a bevel to the text?).

[Bug 1163323] Re: Ubuntu 15px T rendered as bold S

2013-04-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks, if the issue is specific to one machine it likely has to do with
the installed fonts/user configuration.

Some questions
1- how did you set the font to use?
2- does it happen with another user (or in a guest session) on the same machine?
3- did you do any tweaking in the fonts configuration on that machine?

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-04-02 Thread apinunt
Wouldn't it be nice to have a single place to report bugs? After going
to the https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gvfs site,
creating a login and trying to figure out just how to use it to report a
bug, I felt the time would be better spent living with the bug and
hoping that it will eventually be cleared.

I'm about to purchase a new computer, and usually I complain loudly
about being forced to purchase a preinstalled MS OS which I have always
previously deleted once getting the computer home. If this bug and the
several others I've been trying to get resolved unsuccessfully, continue
to linger, and the MS OS does not have the same bug, I may begin to
consider the MS OS a blessing rather than wasted money. Some of us have
to produce results with our computers, and although I've worked with
unix all my life, making Linux a more desirable OS, I can live with a
Windows OS until Linux can produce a less buggy 'stable' upgrade.

Sorry if I seem to be frustrated, but the disappointments are beginning
to escalate reducing productivity greatly.

If someone was to create a bug report on bugzilla, please provide a link
to it here, and I will add to it if that will help.

[Bug 377322] Re: Nautilus sftp connection breaks spontaneously after a while, needing re-login to fix it

2013-04-02 Thread Timothy Arceri
Ok, PPA is ppa:t-fridey/t-arceri-gvfs-ppa

Please test with no remote files open for first timeout. Hopefully the
sftp mount will be unmounted and you will be able to remount it.

Next please test with a remote file open when the timeout happens
hopefully again the sftp mount will be unmounted. (you may receive and
error message from the program with the open file this is expected.)

Let me know how it goes.

[Bug 861171] Re: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open

2013-04-02 Thread James M. Leddy
** Description changed:

- Selecting shutdown from the greeter does nothing when multiple accounts
- are open.
+ [Impact]
+
+ * A user tries to shut down their machine. They get confused because nothing
happens
+when they click shutdown.
+ * If someone else is logged in, they will have to ask that person to Switch
User to
+log in and log out
+ * If someone else is logged in and you don't know the password of the
account, you
+can't shut down
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Have two login accounts
+ * Log both people in, via power cog-lock screen-switch user
+ * Log out
+ * log in to an account, and try to power off the machine
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * It wasn't possible to shutdown at all before
+ * I can't see a case for a regression, since it never worked to begin with
+
+ [Original Report]
+
+ Selecting shutdown from the greeter does nothing when multiple accounts are
open.

This is because the lightdm user (which the greeter runs as) does not
have permission to shutdown while sessions are open. Inside a normal
session this would just return you to the login screen.

The solution is either for the indicator to say not allowed or to run
a PolicyKit frontend in the greeter than can get the required
- permissions to perform the shutdown.

[Bug 952108] Re: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak

2013-04-02 Thread Aristotelis
@ sandiglioanno-gianni

  Desktop Background Image changing (Webilder)

Are those test runs you provided with this app turned off? I know you
already said that there seems to be no relation between the wallpaper
changer and RAM usage, but a number of users _have_ reported similar
issues with Variety, which is also a background switcher. Again, just
playing devil's advocate here (I am experiencing the issue without any
wallpaper changer running in the background.)

[Bug 1163425] [NEW] Displays detects a secondary unknown display when there is nothing connected

2013-04-02 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
Public bug reported:

The Display control panel shows a secondary screen on my laptop when
there is nothing connected to the HDMI or DisplayPort outputs. An
screenshot showing the problem is attached.

After playing with this screen, TTY doesn't work and the shutdown
process hangs before entering TTY.

I am using a MUXed hybrid graphics laptop (Intel Ironlake / AMD 5650m)
and this may be related to other problems I have with this system (bugs
#1162526 and #1163418).

[Bug 1163425] Re: Displays detects a secondary unknown display when there is nothing connected

the GUI is only reflecting that

[Bug 958007] Re: First switching of the keyboard layout doesn't update the layout indicator

2013-04-02 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
As I can see from the blueprint
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-r-gnome-fallback ,
the keyboard layout indicator will not be rewritten “to be a proper
indicator” within the Raring cycle.

Keyboard indicator is being written:
https://code.launchpad.net/~attente/+junk/indicator-keyboard. It won't
be in raring, but hopefully there will be a PPA.

2013-04-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I hope you add similar functionality to gnome fallback session. Not
all users have Unity running. So bug is not completely fixed.

No, there is no plan to do that, every time we patch over GNOME we get
GNOME users angry at us saying we should respect the GNOME design
decision and ship GNOME like it's intended to be, which is what we are
doing as much as we can.

If you disagree with the GNOME design either report bugs to upstream
GNOME or change your session to Unity or something else...

[Bug 1071922] Re: double tap does not open folders or files in Nautilus

2013-04-02 Thread Kent Baxley
I tested the proposed Nautilus package on the following:

Dell Inspiron 5521 with an Elan touchscreen.
12.04.2 64-bit

Before the nautilus fix, the double-tapping on folders didn't work.

After apply the nautilus update in proposed, I can now double-tap to
drill down into folders and launch files, applications, etc.

I think the 100% cpu began after my connection expired and nautilus is

[Bug 1163674] [NEW] Adding a printer crashes Gnome Control Center (System Settings)

2013-04-02 Thread Jasauders
Public bug reported:

When trying to add a printer the entire Gnome Control Center (System
Settings) menu crashes. I get as far as seeing what printers are
available to install. Once I click add it crashes each and every time.

Something interesting I noticed is if I install system-config-printer-
gnome, it works fine. If I remove system-config-printer-gnome (I
actually did a remove --purge), the problem pops back up again. Seems as
if that package is playing a key role with compatibility.
