[Bug 1163155] [NEW] keep the 3 or 5 youngest linux-image-*-generic and autoremove the rest
Public bug reported: Keep a configurable number (per default maybe 3) of the youngest installed generic kernel images. Onlye the generic ones! Selfbuild kernels are not affected of that. Ubuntu-Systems running very long without reinstallation. After some years of updating there are a lot of old kernel-images installed but never used. [Bug 562476] Re: x-www-browser, sensible-browser and gnome-www-browser don't use the default browser
@Thibault: xdg-open, for sure, and for 2 main reasons: - xdg-open is more portable: it chooses the most appropriate open command for your system, be it Gnome, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, etc, while gnome- open works only in gnome. In fact, in Gnome systems xdg-open used to end up calling gnome-open. So let it choose the suitable opener for you. - gnome-open is deprecated, and was replaced by gvfs-open. A quick googling reveals https://live.gnome.org/LibgnomeMustDie , and also https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/15556 offers some insight. xdg-open was updated a long time ago to use gvfs-open if it was available, and fallback to gnome-open for (really) old systems Worth note that gvfs-open (and thereby xdg-open too) uses the xdg mime database system to choose an application based on mime-type handlers, which is the system used by Preferred Applications, so it respects the *user* preferences. ** Bug watch added: Pidgin Trac #15556 http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/15556 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562476 Title: x-www-browser, sensible-browser and gnome-www-browser don't use the default browser To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/562476/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 796076] Re: When run as root [gksudo gedit whatever] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1'
I have a workaround for those LTS users like me who haven't got the fixed gedit. As stated if gksudo gksudo gedit is run, it doesn't create the empty document. Therefore, adding this: gksudo() { if [ $1 = gedit ] then shift gksudo gksudo gedit $@ else command gksudo $@ fi } to your .bashrc will fix it. For those who don't know bash, it's a function that will be called when the user types gksudo. If the second argument is gedit, then it shifts the argument array, to drop off the first, and then passes the argument array to gksudo gksudo gedit. (This makes sure that if the users specifies a file to open it will get opened). Otherwise it just runs gksudo for us. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/796076 Title: When run as root [gksudo gedit whatever] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1' To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gedit/+bug/796076/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1069757]
(In reply to comment #36) I just posted that I was still experiencing this bug, when using 4.0.2 RC2 (as downloaded from the Pre-Releases sections of libreoffice.org). Testing again with a locally built copy from the git repo at tag libreoffice-4.0.2.2 I find that load and save are in fact working. My build process was $ ./autogen.sh --disable-gnome-vfs --enable-gio $ make $ make dev-install -o build I don't know what the difference between that and the released package would be, but seems the code in git is OK. The official, generic Linux builds at http://www.libreoffice.org/download are built --enable-gnome-vfs --disable-gio, which does make a difference here, as --enable-gnome-vfs and --enable-gio provide alternate implementations for accessing remote files. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1069757 Title: [Upstream] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1069757/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1163237] [NEW] Using sudo to run nautilus with root permission to change the owner of a folder causes a crash
Public bug reported: I ran a window of nautilus using sudo, to get root permissions. Then I tried to change the owner of a folder. (It was really an hdd mounted in that folder if that matters.) I set the owner to Haakon in the gui, and nautilus crashed. Reopening nautilus to fix this resulted in more crashing, with the same error: User \Haakon\ does not exist. [Bug 952108] Re: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak
More Infos: I'm also on Precise and confirm this bug it's really annoying a lot! In my case Nautilus regularly eats memory while simply copying files. I've started to copy a large tree of small files two days ago in the morning from an USB disk to another; the copy was the only process in a regular running state. I came back home yesterday, 36 hours later, and nautilus copy was still running using about 1/3 of my 8GB of precious RAM while copying at only 1MB/sec against usual 10-15MB/sec; CPU usage was also very high, near 100% of the used processor. I stopped the process, rebooted and started to copy a smaller tree each time. The memory leak was always in place for each tree I copied, increasing the memory used as well as the charge on the CPU taking care of running the process; these are collected steps: - 1st tree (13.3GB,55k files): RAM 0.76%-1.94%(+1.18%), ~12MB/sec, ~5-6%CPU - 2nd tree (8,5GB,30k files): RAM 1.95%-2.39%(+0.44%), ~10MB/sec, ~8-10% CPU - 3rd tree (14,0GB,50k files): RAM 2.40%-3.52%(+1.12%), ~9MB/sec, ~11-15%CPU - 4th tree (13,6GB,48k files): RAM 3.53%-4.55%(+1.02%), ~8MB/sec, ~14-20%CPU - 5th tree (20,9GB,105k files): RAM 4.56%-6.69%(+2.13%), ~7MB/sec, ~17-25%CPU - 6th tree (28,8GB,146k files): RAM 6,70%-9,86%(+2.16%), ~6MB/sec, ~20-30%CPU The memory leak seems loosely coupled to the number of copied files, maybe to the total length of the filenames managed? The higher CPU usage seems simply related to the waste of RAM memory. When the copy was completed nautilus CPU usage went down to 0.17% while RAM usage remained 9.86%. It could be interesting I'm using: - Dropbox - Desktop Background Image changing (Webilder) but changing in RAM/CPU usage did not seem at all related to these processes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/952108 Title: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/952108/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share
Wouldn't it be nice to have a single place to report bugs? After going to the https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gvfs site, creating a login and trying to figure out just how to use it to report a bug, I felt the time would be better spent living with the bug and hoping that it will eventually be cleared. I'm about to purchase a new computer, and usually I complain loudly about being forced to purchase a preinstalled MS OS which I have always previously deleted once getting the computer home. If this bug and the several others I've been trying to get resolved unsuccessfully, continue to linger, and the MS OS does not have the same bug, I may begin to consider the MS OS a blessing rather than wasted money. Some of us have to produce results with our computers, and although I've worked with unix all my life, making Linux a more desirable OS, I can live with a Windows OS until Linux can produce a less buggy 'stable' upgrade. Sorry if I seem to be frustrated, but the disappointments are beginning to escalate reducing productivity greatly. [Bug 1163425] [NEW] Displays detects a secondary unknown display when there is nothing connected

[Bug 1163674] [NEW] Adding a printer crashes Gnome Control Center (System Settings)
Public bug reported: When trying to add a printer the entire Gnome Control Center (System Settings) menu crashes. I get as far as seeing what printers are available to install. Once I click add it crashes each and every time. Something interesting I noticed is if I install system-config-printer- gnome, it works fine. If I remove system-config-printer-gnome (I actually did a remove --purge), the problem pops back up again. Seems as if that package is playing a key role with compatibility.
