Closing the report since it's not an Ubuntu issue, the new version has

[Bug 1205055] Re: Impossible to change column width of Nautilus in list view

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1243806 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1243806

Same problem Ubuntu 14.04 x64, first experienced in recycle bin.

Solution: Disable the Original Location column. After this, the name
column is resizable. I guess there's a strange value given as default
width for Original Location, MAX_INT or something like that :), which
makes it in turn impossible to change any other column as long as
Original Location is visible.

[Bug 1355796] [NEW] False SMART data given on hard drives

2014-08-12 Thread Jeb E.
Public bug reported:

With any hard disk that I plug in via SATA on my PC that supports SMART
technology, the Gnome Disk Utility, no matter how many runing hours the
disk has had, will tell me that every single attribute has a Pre-Fail
or Old-Age type, which I know is completely untrue especially because
of the fact that I have tried this over and over again on multiple PCs
and multiple Hard Disks.

Maybe the Disk Utility just isn't calibrated correctly for modern disks?

[Bug 1355804] [NEW] Evince apparmor settings not allowing sitewide dconf changes

 3.10.3-0ubuntu10 0
500 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main i386 Packages

There are a few issues here. The main problem is that the Evince apparmor
settings does not honor site wide dconf settings as described in dconf(7). I'm
currently preparing a multiuser setup where we need some site wide
configurations, one of which affects Evince.

Problem (1): As described in dconf(7) system wide settings can be made
by creating and editing /etc/dconf/profile/user, which will be read if
it exists. However if we do

echo 'user-db:user' | sudo tee -a /etc/dconf/profile/user
sudo dconf update
evince

We get the following warning

(evince:9145): dconf-WARNING **: Unable to open /etc/dconf/profile/user:
Permission denied

and the following message in SYSLOG

kernel: [ 1129.931888] type=1400 audit(1407843498.164:65):
apparmor=DENIED operation=open profile=/usr/bin/evince
name=/etc/dconf/profile/user pid=9145 comm=evince requested_mask=r
denied_mask=r fsuid=1000 ouid=0

Indeed if we search through all files in /etc/apparmod.d , /etc/dconf is
not mentioned anywhere.

Possible solution: Add

/etc/dconf/** r,

to /etc/apparmor.d/abscractions/evince (I've added it at the end of the
/etc/ list already there), and run

sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince

Then there are no complaints anymore

Problem (2): Again reading dconf(7) it is recommended to change the
settigns if /home is NFS mounted. Thus in /etc/dconf/profile/user we
should replace /user-db:user' by 'service-db:keyfile/user'

This causes a new permission denied problem. Remember to run 'sudo dconf
update' and log out and ind again.

(evince:19187): dconf-WARNING **: unable to open file '/run/user/1000
/dconf-service/keyfile/user': Failed to open file '/run/user/1000/dconf-
service/keyfile/user': open() failed: Permission denied; expect degraded
performance

from syslog:

kernel: [ 5430.597984] type=1400 audit(1407848788.264:81):
apparmor=DENIED operation=open profile=/usr/bin/evince
name=/run/user/1000/dconf-service/keyfile/user pid=19188
comm=64636F6E6620776F726B6572 requested_mask=r denied_mask=r
fsuid=1000 ouid=1000

The apparmor files does mention '/run/user/' (in usr.bin.evince):

# Maybe add to an abstraction?
  owner /{,var/}run/user/*/dconf/ w,
  owner /{,var/}run/user/*/dconf/user rw,

however, this does not match 'dconf-service'. One can fix this by adding

owner /{,var/}run/user/*/dconf-service/keyfile/ w,
owner /{,var/}run/user/*/dconf-service/keyfile/user rw,

to /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/evince (I added them right after the
other 'owner' lines at the top

This issue is especially apparent when you use Unity's scaling features in
Ubuntu 14.04:

My eyes like everything bigger, but it doesn't play well with this
setting window. Additionally, you cannot resize this window or maximize
it.

[Bug 1295670] Re: Nautilus doesn't save items view

2014-08-12 Thread Bugs
Extracted from this website : http://www.techsupportalert.com/content
/tips-and-tricks-ubuntu-after-installation-ubuntu-1404.htm

Windows Explorer allows for users to set a default view to all folders.
In almost the same way, Ubuntu's Files Manager allows for these
settings:

Set File BrowserClick the Files icon on the Launcher.
From the menu, click Edit then Preferences.
Under Default View, change Icon View to List View, to see more details in
columns.

Hope this helps!

[Bug 395922] Re: Please replace the disc with a supported cd or dvd

2014-08-12 Thread Claudio
my solution

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnomebaker/stable

 sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/gnomebaker-stable-trusty.list

change trusty to precise

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gnomebaker

now using Gnomebaker on 14.04 working great !

[Bug 1340907] Re: cannot edit tags in m4a files

2014-08-12 Thread Bruce Culbertson
Is it simple to install the qtdemux plugin? Would this cause other
problems?

How can we get qtdemux back into current Ubuntu releases? Are there
political/philosophical obstacles?

Since 2012 I waited for this issue to be solved in Ubuntu (see my
comments). At last I have given up and therefore I swiched to Linux Mint
Cinnamon. No such problems with scaling at all.

[Bug 1355966] [NEW] Implement AbandonScope (etc)

2014-08-12 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

Currently, logout produces the following error in upstart systems:

systemd-logind[15351]: Failed to abandon scope session-c7.scope
systemd-logind[15351]: Failed to abandon session scope: No such interface
'org.freedesktop.systemd1.Scope' on object at path
/org/freedesktop/systemd1/unit/session_2dc7_2escope

Whlie the cgroup is being autoremoved when empty, the more important
bug is that StopSession won't forcibly kill the cgroup. These methods
should be added at some point.

[Bug 1340907] Re: cannot edit tags in m4a files

2014-08-12 Thread Bruce Culbertson
I am the person who originally reported this bug and I continue to be
unable to edit m4a tags with Rhythmbox. I appear to have qtdemux
installed on my 14.04 system (although I did nothing to explicitly
install it) so perhaps qtdemux (or its absence) is not causing this bug.
I ran gst-inspect qtdemux and it said qtdemux is in /usr/lib/x86_64
-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstisomp4.so, which indeed exists on my
computer and seems to include qtdemux.

Users are unable to make bookmarks in Nautilus using diacritic
characters in their own language.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Mayer
Same here on a Dell Latitude E5510, which I updated to 14.04 these days.
I have compiz enabled.

For me, CPU consumption begins right after executing nautilus, while
nautilus consumes approximately 25% to 40% of the cpu according to top.
It seems as if as if all 4 threads of my dualcore cpu are in use by
nautilus. Once consuming cpu, it does not stop anymore until I close
nautilus.

Definately, it is unusable that way on a laptop on battery. Capacity
drops from 5-6 hours to 1-2 hours just because of nautilus. Please fix
this annoying bug which seemed to be active for years now.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Mayer
The
sudo mv ~/.cache/thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails_
ln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails
did the trick for me as well.

I have noticed that ~/.cache/thumbnails only had permissions for the
root user. Plus, it just had a size of just 24kilobytes, which means it
did not really contain thumbnails. Which is why nautilus did not display
any on 14.04.

In the end, I can work three times as long as before on battery and, as
a bonus, I even can SEE the thumbnails. By simply fixing a symlink. I
just can't understand why this bug, which is fixable THAT easy still is
not fixed in the packages.

Btw, I did not notice the cpu consumption of nautilus in 12.04.4, which
means it seems to be a regression after updating to 14.04.

And I updated just some days ago, so I guess the transition during the
update to 14.04 still is buggy.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Mayer
The old directory entry was

ls -la .cache/|grep thumbnails
drwx-- 1 root root 18 Jul 15 01:40 thumbnails

which came from 12.04 or before, I guess. I can't remember to have ever
touched this directory manually.

I guess this is the world's most energy consuming missing symlink ever.
I expect the number of affected users to be MUCH higher than 129,
because this bug was not reported automatically because of an
application crash.

Think of environmental pollution, think of energy costs (approx. 30USD
per year just for me. Multiply with all users coming from older ubuntu
versions), think of battery consumption, noise, heat, cooling, and
slowness of affected systems.

This bug MUST have a HIGH PRIORITY and can be fixed so easy.
