[Bug 1448754] Re: xterm menu items disappeared
Under Preferences, you can specify whether the New Terminal menu entry opens it in a window or a tab. Separate shortcuts (Shift+Ctrl+N and Shift+Ctrl+T by default) are still available. This was a change done in mainstream gnome-terminal; I have no idea what was the intent behind it. I have no opinion either whether it's better or worse than the old one was. I recommend you to accept it this way and get used to it :) ** Summary changed: - xterm menu items disappeared + gnome-terminal menu items disappeared -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448754 Title: gnome-terminal menu items disappeared To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/1448754/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1448754] Re: gnome-terminal menu items disappeared
Thank you for this information. I have found that myself. Have no Gnome desktop so didn't know if this was an error or a feature. Having played a bit with 15.04 I found several changes in the way applications work. Most of them are not beneficial. I can live with this but I have users that might nag me about such a change. [Bug 1448865] Re: System doesn't boot with systemd, upstart mode is ok
Seems you already figured out the broken fstab yourself. Indeed upstart/mountall didn't complain about this, and you silently wouldn't have a swap partition. systemd is more explicit about this, and in rescue mode or if you boot without splash, or wait long enough you'd see the error. This is a behaviour which we want to keep, we don't just want to sweep such errors under the carpet. ** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu) Status: New = Won't Fix ** Summary changed: - System doesn't boot with systemd, upstart mode is ok + does not boot with broken UUIDs in fstab -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448865 Title: does not boot with broken UUIDs in fstab To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1448865/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: there's a bug in gtk+ 3.10 and 3.12 (Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10) which prevents user from resizing a column in TreeView. [Bug 1448865] [NEW] System doesn't boot with systemd, upstart mode is ok
You have been subscribed to a public bug: After successful upgrade from kubuntu 14.10 to 15.04, the system hangs during boot and never reaches the login screen. When grub menu entry Ubuntu, with Linux 3.19.0-15-generic (upstart) is selected, the system boots normally. It turns out that the /etc/fstab uuids for the / and swap partitions are not correct. Once corrected and set to the values from /dev/disk/by-uuid/, booting is possible using systemd. fstab had been edited manually in the past but there were no problems until the upgrade to 15.04. [Bug 1449001] [NEW] systemd-resolved: please do not use Google public DNS by default
Public bug reported: systemd-resolved will fall back to Google public DNS (8.8.8.8, etc.) in the absence of other configured DNS servers. systemd-resolved is not enabled by default in Ubuntu 15.04, but it is installed by default and will behave in this way if enabled by the user. $ cat /etc/systemd/resolved.conf (...) # Entries in this file show the compile time defaults. (...) #FallbackDNS=8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 2001:4860:4860:: 2001:4860:4860::8844 This raises privacy concerns since in the event of accidental misconfiguration DNS queries will be sent unencrypted across the internet, and potentially also security concerns given systemd-resolved does not perform DNSSEC validation and is not particularly well hardened against malicious responses e.g. from a MITM (http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2014/11/12/5). I believe that it would be better to fail safe if no DNS server is configured -- i.e. have DNS lookups fail; it's better that the user is aware of their misconfiguration, rather than silently sending their queries to Google. The user can intentionally opt to use Google public DNS if they wish. Steps to reproduce: 1. Remove existing DNS configuration (from /etc/network/interfaces, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/*) 2. Reboot, or otherwise clear relevant state 3. sudo service systemd-resolved start 4. Note that Google's servers are listed in /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf 5. If systemd-resolved is enabled in /etc/nsswitch.conf (it isn't by default), observe that DNS lookups probably still work, and queries are being sent to one of Google's servers Possible workaround/bugfix: ship a resolved.conf which clears the FallbackDNS parameter. This issue has been discussed in the Debian BTS (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761658). My interpretation of the Debian package maintainer's position is that a user concerned with the privacy implications shouldn't let systemd get into a state where it uses the fallback DNS servers (quoting Marco d'Itri: Short summary: have a resolv.conf file or use DHCP). I would argue that it's safest not to have fallback DNS servers configured at all by default. ** Affects: systemd Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #761658 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761658 ** Also affects: systemd via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761658 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1449001 Title: systemd-resolved: please do not use Google public DNS by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/systemd/+bug/1449001/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 1448563] Re: terminal won't launch with a customized locale
Gnome-terminal is unfortunately known to have troubles with non-UTF-8 locales, see e.g. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732127. In your case, however, I suspect that you're doing something wrong with your installation (because you also seem to aim for UTF-8). It's weird to me that you use nonstandard tools to install them, rather than localedef or locale-gen. At the very least, what does locale charmap print with your locale? It should be UTF-8. Hi Egmont, and thanks for your attention to the bug. I certainly may have done something wrong; the online documentation about setting up a custom locale that I was able to find is confusing and sparse, and there seem to be very few tools to help an ordinary user customize a locale. I'm no locale expert; my motivation was just to use 24-hour time, - MM-DD dates, and the Metric system, even though I live in the US. I originally tried using localedef directly, but it exited with code 1, listing a slew of errors that didn't seem to have anything to do with the modest customizations that I made to the locale. Rather than spend all day at it I tried the Python script that I mentioned in the bug description, which calls localedef. The script reported success, and my simple locale-test program verified that I had installed the locale well enough to get the date and time formats I wanted. Unfortunately, once my custom locale was installed, every time I launched a GUI program from the command line I got a fontconfig() warning complaining about the locale. So I may have done something wrong, but I did succeed at getting the date and time formats I wanted. I filed the bug because I was able to launch a terminal under Ubuntu 14.10, but once I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04, then I couldn't. $ LANG=rob_custom.UTF-8 $ locale locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory LANG=rob_custom.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=en_US LC_CTYPE=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_TIME=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_MONETARY=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_PAPER=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_NAME=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_ADDRESS=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_TELEPHONE=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_MEASUREMENT=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION=rob_custom.UTF-8 LC_ALL= $ locale charmap locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory ANSI_X3.4-1968 $ Aha, the charmap isn't UTF-8 for some reason. Do you want to delete it immediately? although it is immediately moved to the Trash after I open the folder via the Data partition in the sidebar. (Naturally there are no such problems with items in other (real) items in my Home folder. Nautilus now seems confused about / not knowing where to move the item in question; to the Trash folder in the Home partition (symlink location) or the Data partition (real item location). ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1449112 Title: can't move files to trash without any owner/permission issues To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1449112/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1449101] [NEW] Upgrading Kubuntu 14.10 to 15.04 boots to console (fails due to read-ony file system)

[Bug 1449122] [NEW] Nautilus (and other apps) force-close unless run as root
Public bug reported: After I upgraded from Ubuntu 14.10 to Ubuntu 15.04, I have been noting stability problems of many applications. They force-close randomly or when I trigger certain actions. Some of this apps include nautilus, gnome-maps, nemo, gnome-control-center, evolution, and others that I may not know of. I have checked dmesg and syslog and I can see that all of the crashes report a segmentation fault, something about 0 ip and error 14. [Bug 1448656] Re: systemd doesn't allow proper shutdown after it encountered errornous .service
I can't reproduce this. I produces the errornous service by adding a shell variable declaration to the .service file e.g. [Unit] Description=A service triggering an error X=Y env X=Y [Service] Environment=A=B ExecStart=echo $A [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I could trigger the failure by moving the file out of `/lib/systemd/system` (to `/root`) and back, but I no longer have the file. The failure seems to have occured due to the root filesystem being corrupted by a failing `flashcache` write-back and the fact that I could suppress the issue and recreate it (only once) a random correlation. I no longer have the original file, but I'm sure it was correct besides the variable declaration. ** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448656 Title: systemd doesn't allow proper shutdown after it encountered errornous .service To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1448656/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 1448563] Re: terminal won't launch with a customized locale
Egmont's email gave me enough clues to figure out that I had incorrectly installed my custom locale; the charmap was ANSI_X3.4-1968 rather than UTF-8. (I'll guess that when I used the Python script to install my custom locale, the script called localedef without the -f UTF-8 option to set the charmap to UTF-8.) I reinstalled my custom locale correctly, using the command localedef -i rob_custom -f UTF-8 rob_custom.UTF-8, edited /etc/default/locale to set my custom locale as the system default again, and rebooted. Now my custom locale is selected, locale charmap says UTF-8, and I can launch a gnome-terminal. So I think I've confirmed that the bug is that a gnome-terminal can't be launched when a custom locale is installed that uses the default ANSI_X3.4-1968 charmap. I had been able to launch a gnome-terminal with Ubuntu 14.10, even though my locale charmap wasn't UTF-8. I think that this bug should be fixed, because gnome-terminal should handle a locale with a non-UTF-8 charmap more gracefully, even though the situation is uncommon. So here is a simpler procedure to demonstrate the bug, which doesn't require the custom locale file that I attached to the bug. 1) Open an xterm. Use the xterm window for the following steps. 2) In the /usr/share/i18n/locales directory, make a copy of a locale file. This will be your customized locale. 3) Install the copied locale file using localedef without using the -f option. 4) Set the LANG environment variable to the newly installed locale. 5) Use the locale command and the locale charmap commands to verify that the locale is set to the new customized locale, and that the charmap isn't UTF-8. 6) If you have any gnome-terminal windows open, close them. Now try to launch a terminal by typing gnome-terminal in the xterm window; if no window appears, then you've demonstrated the bug. $ sudo cp /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_US /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_US2 $ sudo localedef -i en_US2 en_US2.UTF-8 $ LANG=en_US2.UTF-8 $ locale LANG=en_US2.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=en LC_CTYPE=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_TIME=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_MONETARY=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_PAPER=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_NAME=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_ADDRESS=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_TELEPHONE=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US2.UTF-8 LC_ALL= $ locale charmap ANSI_X3.4-1968 $ gnome-terminal I hope I've been helpful. - Rob -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448563 Title: terminal won't launch with a customized locale To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/1448563/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1448459] Re: nautilus context menu for devices
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
