2017-08-09 Thread Paul
Thanks for the instructions, I will do that if the bug recurs.

By the way, it is an infinite loop (spinning on one core), not a hang.
Presumably the latter is used as an umbrella term within the desktop
team?

Thanks for your interest in helping to resolve this issue. In order to
get to the bottom of this we need to figure out where the program is
hanging. If you can follow the steps on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Already_running_programs and attach
the generated text file to this bug it would be of great help.

[Bug 1694454] Re: Can't open gnome terminal

2017-08-09 Thread Chris
I'm also experiencing this issue. I first noticed it when attempting to
start gnome-terminal using i3. The keyboard shortcut failed to launch
the terminal. I've noticed the same behavior intermittently using Gnome
desktop as well.

Sometimes restarting resolves the issue. But after a couple restarts,
and uninstalling/re-installing, gnome-terminal still fails to launch (it
simply returns the dbus accessibility warning).

Fortunately I could use the impressive alacritty terminal in the
meantime.

Here's my system info:

➜  ~ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)
Release:17.10

Just let me know if any additional information is needed.

And thanks to Plamen above for the workaround! Using "dbus-launch gnome-
terminal" launches gnome-terminal without issue.

[Bug 1708905] [NEW] FQDN used as a hostname causes ping and other lookups to append the FQDN to unknown / unresolvable hosts when using wildcard DNS

2017-08-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

If you configure your top level fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to
use a wildcard DNS record in its zone file in bind9, any sub-servers
(subdomains) or hostnames using part of the FQDN will

have unexpected behavior when attempting to resolve DNS.

--
Steps to reproduce:
--

-
Using the main server where the top level FQDN is configured:
-

1. Create a wildcard A record in the main name server's zone file for
your domain. Let's use example.com for this report.

sudo nano /etc/bind/example.com

Add this line to the end of the file:

*   IN A1.1.1.1

2. Save changes to the file and quit the editor.

3. Reload / restart bind9 to apply these changes.

sudo service bind9 restart

-
On a subdomain server (just another server) that will use part of the FQDN:
-

1. Change your server's hostname by editing /etc/hostname

sudo nano /etc/hostname

2.  Use a FQDN such as server1.example.com
2. Save changes to the file and quit the editor.
4. Add a hosts file entry for server1.example.com in /etc/hosts

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Add this line to the end of the file:

127.0.1.1   server1.example.com

5. Save changes to the file and quit the editor.
6. Reboot the server to apply the hostname and hosts changes.

sudo shutdown -r now

7. In a terminal, ping any unresolvable or unknown host.

ping adsfadsfadsfdsafadsfadsfadsfadsfadsfadsf.com

The ping command appends .example.com to the host.
adsfadsfadsfdsafadsfadsfadsfadsfadsfadsf.com.example.com will thus
resolve to *.example.com.

This is INCORRECT because I did NOT ping
"adsfadsfadsfdsafadsfadsfadsfadsfadsfadsf.com.example.com"  I pinged
"adsfadsfadsfdsafadsfadsfadsfadsfadsfadsf.com".

Wildcard DNS entries are being appended to a host lookup in certain
utilities such as ping. This should NOT be happening.

If you remove the wildcard entry from the main FQDN server and reload
bind, pinging from the sub-server will now correctly return the error I
was expecting of "ping: unknown host

adsfadsfadsfdsafadsfadsfadsfadsfadsfadsf.com"

[Bug 1709649] [NEW] 229 backport for race between explicit mount and handling automount

2017-08-09 Thread Pegerto Fernandez
Public bug reported:

Hi,

We have a blocking issue in systemd for the following release

```
NAME="Ubuntu"
VERSION="16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus)"
ID=ubuntu
ID_LIKE=debian
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS"
VERSION_ID="16.04"
SUPPORT_URL="http://help.ubuntu.com/;
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/;
VERSION_CODENAME=xenial
UBUNTU_CODENAME=xenial
```

This release runs systemd229, we are affected by the following auto-
mouting race condition

```
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/5916
```

Is back porting the fix to the release 229 an option?

[Bug 1133477] Re: [SRU] cut-n-paste move files got stuck forever

2017-08-09 Thread Simon Quigley
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  Without these fixes, copying any more than a few files in several file
managers including but not limited to Nautilus and Caja either completely
freezes up the file manager (if this happens with a Cut and Paste, it destroys
user data by leaving files half moved) or slows it down to a crawl. These bugs
are not found when using the mv command in the terminal, which will copy the
files in a couple of seconds at maximum. This is a nightmare for people who
want to Cut and Paste a lot of files and who need to do it quickly.

  [Test Case]
  Either find some files that you would be OK losing (or have a backup for) or
create the files yourself. You can run the following command to generate 1024
empty 1 MB files (do this in an empty directory, where you have at least 1 GB
of free space), which is a valid way to reproduce this bug:

  i=1 && while [ $i -lt 1025 ]; do dd if=/dev/zero of=$i bs=4k
  iflag=fullblock,count_bytes count=1M; i=$[$i+1]; done

  (Credit to https://stackoverflow.com/a/11779492/4123313 and
  http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-Guide/html/sect_09_02.html - also,
  neither truncate or fallocate are used because the bug cannot be
  reproduced when using those tools, my theory is that with dd it actually
  writes the zeroes, with those tools, they say they wrote the zeroes to
  the filesystems but it seems they actually didn't (something along the
  lines of that), although I could be wrong)

  If you open Nautilus or Caja, and Cut and Paste these 1024 files
  somewhere else, the transfer will slow to a crawl, and in one instance
  where I tried this with 1024 empty 512 MB files, Nautilus actually
  crashed. This is very different to using mv in the terminal before doing
  it in the file manager, which transfers these files flawlessly.

  Once this fix is applied and I recreate these files, the transfer in
  Nautilus and Caja is almost as fast as using mv (I'd say within a
  second), which is what should happen.

  [Breakdown of the patches and the regression potential for each]
- First, I'd like to thank levien for providing the bug report and the patch
links to fix this. Without that, it would have been a bit more work to hunt
down which patches are applicable.
+ First, I'd like to thank levien for providing the patch links to fix this.

  lp1133477-metadata-use-sequences-instead-of-lists.patch:
  Patch Description: The metabuilder stores files and data in sorted lists. An
insertion into a sorted list is done in linear time, which highly affects
efficiency. In order to fix this, use GSequence instead which does insertion
and deletion in logarithmic time.

  This patch is in here because it helps with a large amount of files.
  Regardless if the files are 1 MB or 10 GB, the sorting of the files to
  be moved/copied is inefficient. This addresses part of the problem by
  making sure large amount of files can be dealt with efficiently. The
  regression potential for this is low, and the only case that I can see
  where a package would regress is a file manager that depends on (not
  100% on this theory but it's a possibility) monitoring the status of the
  list at a given time, and is incompatible with using GSequence. In this
  case, the package would have something peculiar hardcoded, and would
  most likely have an upstream fix that could be backported because this
  fix is in the gvfs release that is already in 17.04 and later (so they
  should have fixed it already). I can't think of a package that does this
  (from what I can tell, it's not sane code if it isn't compatible with
  this change) but if something does regress, it should be trivial to fix.

  Patch Description: Some of the lists used by the metabuilder have items
appended to them. Appending to a list is done in linear time and this highly

in constant time.

  This patch is extremely similar in function to the last one, but this
  one addresses items appended to a list instead of files and data in
  sorted lists. As such, the regression potential is similar (low) because
  it would involve a package hardcoding some things that are incompatible
  with GQueue, and would most likely have an upstream fix that could be
  backported because this fix is in the gvfs release that is already in

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

If I leave it alone when the notification appears, it does indeed
suspend successfully. That's not my concern in this bug. I'm more
looking at the notification with no idea what it actually means. The
fact I had to run some dbus monitor utility to find that out says it's
not a very good notification :)

Perhaps instead of

"Power

It should say

"Power

[Bug 1698287] Re: VA-API fails to initialize in a Gnome Shell Wayland session

2017-08-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package mpv - 0.26.0-3ubuntu1

---
mpv (0.26.0-3ubuntu1) artful; urgency=medium

  * Prefer Wayland over X11, so if both are present (e.g. Xwayland) then
VA-API gets a display type that works (LP: #1698287)
  * Enable hardware acceleration by default (LP: #1708102)

[Bug 1709194] Re: Power notification appears with no detail

2017-08-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, could you run that on a command line
$ dbus-monitor interface='org.freedesktop.Notifications' > gsdpower.log

then get the issue and add the log to the bug?

Trying here the lower battery notification have a battery icon and not
the red one from your screenshot so it's probably another event

[Bug 1709597] [NEW] gnome-shell infinite loop, system is unusable

2017-08-09 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

gnome-shell randomly enters an infinite loop, at which point the entire
screen stops redrawing except for the mouse cursor. (The mouse cursor
still changes correctly for the foreground application when moving
between e.g. text fields and buttons.) The only way to recover is to
kill the gnome-shell, which may or may not destroy the session and all
running GUI applications.

We really need to get this fixed if we are to ship Gnome as the standard
GUI in 18.04.

[Bug 1698287] Re: VA-API fails to initialize in a Gnome Shell Wayland session

2017-08-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Update:

* totem is fixed by the gst-plugins-bad fix released today.
* mpv is fixed by the patch proposed in bug 1708102.
* chromium needs to either be ported to native Wayland, or for libva to be
enhanced with DRI3 support. There are no workarounds for Chromium other than to
avoid Wayland and use Xorg sessions.
* gst-play-1.0 needs an enhancement to mutter linked above, but the workaround
mentioned above is also simple.

[Bug 1709562] [NEW] keyboard panel does not allow to set up Caps as input switch

2017-08-09 Thread George Shuklin
Public bug reported:

Keyboard panel has options for input switching, but it does not allow to
use Caps as language switch.

Steps to reproduce:

1. gnome-control-center keyboard
2. Scroll down to 'Typing' section
3. Click on Switch to next input source
4. Press Caps

Expected result: Caps Lock key is accepted as switch key
Actual results: Caps key is ignored in the selection window.

P.S. Same goes for 'Switch to previous input source' and Shift-Caps key
combination.

[Bug 1709536] [NEW] snapd 2.26.14 on ubuntu-core won't start in containers anymore

2017-08-09 Thread Stéphane Graber
Public bug reported:

It looks like snapd in ubuntu-core (2.26.14 here) has been modified to
use a negative Nice value in systemd. Systemd seems to treat a failure
to apply the requested Nice value as critical to unit startup.

Unprivileged LXD containers do not allow the use of negative nice values
as those are restricted to the real root user. I believe the optimal fix
would be for systemd to ignore permission errors when attempting to
setup such custom nice values in containers but if that can't be
resolved quickly, then it means that snapd will now fail to start inside
containers.

Aug 09 05:54:37 core systemd[1]: snapd.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=201/NICE
Aug 09 05:54:37 core systemd[1]: snapd.service: Unit entered failed state.
Aug 09 05:54:37 core systemd[1]: snapd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.

I have confirmed that setting up a unit override by hand which sets Nice=0 does
resolve the problem, confirming that the negative Nice value is the problem
(snapd.service has Nice=-5 here).

[Bug 1705157] Re: On fresh install or fresh boot greeter always show "ubuntu" though selected session may be ubuntu-wayland

2017-08-09 Thread Didier Roche
Reverting the summary, because it's not wayland/non wayland. Like you
can select the ubuntu session and GNOME will be selected, both being X.
So it's rather "you select a session, another one is selected".

** Summary changed:

- Both "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu on Wayland" result in Wayland. No way to use X11.
+ On fresh install or fresh boot greeter always show "ubuntu" though selected
session may be ubuntu-wayland
