[Bug 1945008] Re: Logs in with Wayland although Xorg looks selected in session menu. Need to reselect

2021-10-08 Thread Stephen Cofer
The question is, though, have you *tried* to recreate the bug? A small
period of time logging in/out and trying to select Xorg, then seeing
what's running when you're logged in might give you some clue that it
might just be a universal problem that can be fixed is all that's
required here. Do you really need all of this bureaucracy and MBs upon
MBs of logs just to find out something might not have gotten set
correctly on login and you have to specifically select an option to get
it to set correctly?

As a developer, the *first thing I do* when someone says there might be
a bug is to *try it myself*, not ask for a mountain of new information
before even acknowledging there might be something wrong. But in all
modern bug report systems, this bureaucratic nonsense seems to be the
norm instead of actually caring about your product enough to take a
moment out of your day to actually see if it might be a problem.

[Bug 1922839] Re: Opening new tab in gnome-terminal launched from nautilus loses most environment variables

2021-10-08 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello Matthew, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-terminal into hirsute-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
terminal/3.38.1-1ubuntu1.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
hirsute to verification-done-hirsute. If it does not fix the bug for
you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed-hirsute. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

  Expect consistently smooth animation.

  [Where problems could occur]

Since the fix touches on frame scheduling it could (and should) affect
the smoothness of the entire screen. Although it is designed to only
  affect drivers that have `frame_clock->last_presentation_time_us == 0`,
so that's the Nvidia proprietary driver and maybe some virtual machine
  configurations.

  [Other Info]

- The upstream fix mutter!1826 is currently only in mutter 41, not in the
- mutter 40 branch yet.
+ The upstream fix mutter!1826 is mutter 41.0 onward, and now in 40.6
+ onward. So we can drop the patch as soon as 40.6 is ready.

[Bug 1944397] Re: HDMI does not display anything with Impish RPi desktop image

2021-10-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sadly I'm still getting vc4 freezes in atomic KMS functions even when
GNOME has been told not to use it:

Oct 08 16:16:31 pi400 gnome-shell[968]: Mode setting implementation for
'/dev/dri/card1' (vc4) forced (non-atomic).

...

Oct 08 16:24:38 pi400 kernel: [drm:drm_crtc_commit_wait [drm]] *ERROR*
flip_done timed out
Oct 08 16:24:38 pi400 kernel: [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies
[drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:76:crtc-3] commit wait timed out
Oct 08 16:24:48 pi400 kernel: [drm:drm_crtc_commit_wait [drm]] *ERROR*
flip_done timed out
Oct 08 16:24:48 pi400 kernel: [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies
[drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [PLANE:70:plane-3] commit wait timed out

I guess the vc4 kernel is trying to implement non-atomic KMS using a
buggy atomic implementation. :(

[Bug 1944397] Re: HDMI does not display anything with Impish RPi desktop image

2021-10-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry I just realized -- this may not be a kernel regression at all.

Mutter 40 was when atomic KMS started being used by GNOME. But it
doesn't work reliably for all kernel drivers. If that happens to include
vc4 then we just need to add it to Mutter's atomic_driver_deny_list.

As a workaround you can add this to /etc/environment:

  MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0

[Bug 1945008] Re: Logs in with Wayland although Xorg looks selected in session menu. Need to reselect

2021-10-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This bug is not abandoned.

Since we frequently have the issue of people commenting on other
peoples' bugs with information that's not relevant to the original
reporter, we would still like information from the original reporter to
be sure the root causes are the same for everyone.
